Castell Dinbych gets my vote. After five years since my 3 months in Dinbych, I still check out the webcam. HAPPY MEMORIES.

To Joe from Kansas, I suppose you have been influenced by the beauty of our country. Although I no longer live there as I travel around quite a lot, there is not a day that I do not think of my homeland and it is so refreshing to read positive and complimentary comments such as yours. Be assured there will always be a place for you "at Home".

Caernarfon castle is by far the most amazing to look at, Conwy is one of the best looking and it engulfs the whole town. But my favorite castle by far is Rhuddlan Castle. It's my home town castle, and I grew up almost killing myself playing hide n seek in its old walls. It will be forever in my heart as a place that I spent my youth having great fun every night after school!

I lived on Castle Street (1980-81) when I was studying for my A-levels in Wrexham. We used to go up to the ruins on weekends with my landlady & friends enjoying the marvellous view from up there.

In my view, the best is Caergwrle. So much mystery surrounds it. I did my GCSE history coursework on it and finding where the original gateway was was a lot of fun indeed. If you look (in particular the East Wall) there is evience of old Welsh masonary and old English masonary as Edward I of England built onto the castle to make it stronger after the Welsh left. The views across Caergwrle and Yr Hōb (Hope) from the top are great too. Castell grźt!

Re: Comment from Paul Roberts. Paul, am I to understand that you and your dogs contributed to the rather unsightly and noxious animal 'leavings' that I rarely seem able to miss upon my visits to Harlech?

My visit to Conwy Castle was unreal. Best vacation I ever had outside of the US was North Wales. Would love to make it my home someday. The pubs were a big part of my sight seeing also. People were great also. I guess I love Wales also.

I went to Llagollen and Wrexham from January to April and it was a fantastic experience. Dinas Bran castle is wonderful and you can see a fantastic landscape.

Just read an elderly autobiography of one of our local heroes, Emlyn Williams. He was obviously inspired by Ewloe Castle - though in his early days it was equally overgrown and inaccessible. Does CADW know?

I agree with Sue Barker, Ewloe Castle does have a presence to it. I also think it is because it's in the woods and you have to make an effort to get there. It's very easy to get lost in time and enjoy the beauty.

The boxer at Gwyrch Castle was either Bruce Woodcock or Randolph Turpin, both of whom trained there. Woodcock lost to Tammie Mauriello (after hitting his head on the ring post) and Turpin defeated Sugar Ray Robinson to become world champion for a while.

Dolwyddelan castle is the best in Wales in terms of site and strategy. Just a shame that Llywelyn and the boys didn't have the brass to build a few more where it counted. Bailey Hill is worth a look in Mold and Caergwrle's three walled castle is another well kept secret.

Many happy memories of carnivals and fetes at Caergwrle Castle. I lived in Llay, and often at weekends me and my schoolmates would go on the bus to the castle for picnics and great games of hide and seek. It was quite an excursion for kids, we had to take 2 buses, one from Llay to Cefn-y-Bedd (Holly Bush Pub) then a Mold bus to the castle, it was all so exciting.

I agree with Joe - we live within sight of Caergwrle Castle. It is the best - although least known - of the Welsh castles. Built in the 12th century and parts of it still remain today. Shelled by the English - built by the Welsh - and STILL standing today! Not bad for 800 years or so.

Conwy Castle is my favorite castle in North Wales. We always go back there when we travel home to St Asaph. My sister lives in Mold, so we usually stay there, but always manage a trip to Conwy Castle.

I used to go to Ewloe Castle when I was small and always wanted to have my wedding photos taken there but weather conditions didn't allow. It always gave me a sence of presence when I was there the soldiers etc in its hidden location and could imagine Sir Sean Connery and Richard Gear acting in that location. My aunty lived at Ewloe Wood and I had my own private beach there! It was about 6 feet of sand next to the brook - what a vivid imagination you have as a child.

Gwryrch castle brings back many many memories of barbecues and fun and often someone hypnotising everyone in a big tent/marquee and seeing many celebrities in the castle itself. I once saw a famous boxer who I still have a photo of and can't remember his name, I think it was Sugar Ray Robinson?

the lasttime I visited my home town of Flint, the castle was full of rubbish. Isn't there any pride in the town's residents to keep the place attractive, and cleaned up for visitors to this most historic site?

Denbigh Castle has to have my vote - I lived opposite it for 10years and had many a great day exploring all of the turrets and walls, also the views of the Vale of Clwyd are breathtaking. Well worth a visit.

Caergwrle - Used to get a gang of us and walk there from Gwersyllt in the Fifties then go swimming off the black bridge in Cefyn y Bedd. The Old English gentleman pub in Cefyn y Bedd was still open in those days.

To me Castell Dynbych is the most magic of the castles in North Wales. In its original state with its town walls it would have been a truly impressive vista to the residents of Denbigh town and visitors to the Vale of Clwyd. I could not agree more with the previous commentators who have said that it has been much underrated.

I have been to most castles in Wales and many across the world. Castell Dinas Bran remains for me the most magical. Reaching the summit is like placing the final piece, of the jigsaw that is myself, in place. I feel complete.

Denbigh castle is the most underestimated castle in Wales. A beautiful view over the historic town, and a great venue for Friday night camping!

Harwarden Castle gets my vote as my boyhood memories of scaling its walls when I should have been learning English at school are still vivid, as are fishing in the red brook which skirts its base, for the brown trout that it held. It was a magical time and place.

Castle Dinas Brān is a beautiful place but, I now also have appreciation for Harlech. Before I thought of it as just another place that was used by the English to control the Welsh but, when I found out that Owain Glyndwr lived here for four years with his family during the struggle for Cymru's independence, I gained a diffrent perspective... but the feeling I still get from all the other castles Edward built is that of tyranny and oppression and suffering upon my ancestors who were a peaceful people whose only desire was freedom!

Caergwrle Castle is ace because it was built by Dafydd ap Gruffydd and the King of England was in it when it burnt down. Unfortunately the King survived.

Ruthin! Watching my husband and his father walk the grounds of Ruthin Castle was one of my most cherished memories. I had each of them telling me separately that they had spent their youth discovering the many secrets of the castle that only young boys can discover. Their shared experience made this castle my favourite.

Personally, I feel Flint Castle is the most presitgious castle due to its history dictating it to be the true homeland site of the true Welsh government.

I appreciate the comments from Marc of Wrecsam but I always thought the English were Germans. There is a wonderful example of a Caer near Shrewsbury/Oswestry and can be seen from the A5. It is well worth a walk round. The amount of soil/rock shifted to make it beggars belief.

I have to agree that the view from Castell Dinas Brān is fantastic. Plus it is a WELSH castle, not one imposed on us by the invading French... ~cough~ I mean English!!
