Making the most of local healthcare services

Last updated: 25 September 2006

Whether you need to find a service or want to know who to contact to improve services, we have pulled together useful links and a basic guide to how healthcare is delivered locally.

Local healthcare services

  • Flintshire Local Health Board is responsible for commissioning 'primary' healthcare services such as GPs, dentists, pharmacists and opticians. It works closely with the local population to plan future healthcare provision so it should listen to your views.
Secondary care services, such as hospitals, ambulances and mental health provision, are commissioned by the Local Health Board and delivered by NHS Trusts.

  • North East Wales NHS Trust runs health centres and clinics, hospitals, district nursing and health visiting and mental health services in Flintshire.
  • In addition the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust and Velindre NHS Trust are responsible for some healthcare services right across Wales.

Local health service watchdog

  • Clwyd Community Health Council acts as the health 'watchdog' for the public in your area. It is there to represent your views, to monitor and influence health providers' policies and plans and to give information about local access to NHS services.

The CHC can give you free, independent advice on complaining about NHS services, with trained staff who can act as advocates, helping to write letters and even attending interviews with you.

Find out more about the planned shake-up of community hospital services in the region.
