Shotton

Shotton way back when...

Last updated: 18 June 2009

Local historian Keith Atkinson writes about Shotton, Deeside - & other local people have added their memories too.

  • Shotton Steelworks

  • The founding of Shotton may well have been more than 1000 years ago. The name means "Farmstead in the glade" and is Anglo-Saxon in origin. The farm may have been Killins Farm, which still exists today. A map of 1876 shows the area, now covered by modern Shotton, to be little more than a cluster of tiny hamlets. The hamlet known as Shotton stood at the junction of Shotton Lane and Killins Lane. Another hamlet, Nine Houses, was at the top of Brook Road. Nearby was Shotton Hall, built in 1637.

Along the main road was a scattering of cottages, with Shotton Cottage and the Eleanor Colliery at the eastern end. There were two schools in Shotton at this time, one at the bottom of Killins Lane - now a house, "Well House" - and a church school, St Ethelwold's, fronting the main road, which was then known as "Turnpike Road".

Hawarden Bridge In 1889 The Hawarden Railway Bridge over the River Dee was opened, which opened up the Dee Marshes to industrial Development. In 1896 the John Summers and Son Ironworks opened, initially employing 250 men. At the turn of the century, Shotton was rapidly changing from a cluster of hamlets into a prosperous industrial town. Rivertown Congregational Church laid its foundation stone in 1898 and a year later the foundation stone of St Ethelwold's Church was laid. By 1903 many houses were being built in streets north of the main road to accommodate the increasing workforce at the Ironworks. There were two Brickworks in Shotton in the early 1900's. Shotton Lane Brickwork Company extracted the clay from what is now the sunken playing field.

Shotton Church The Wepre Hall Brickworks, closed in 1946, was near to Killins Farm and became a refuse tip later.

Local entertainment was provided from the 1920s in the form of the Ritz Dance Hall and the Vaughan Hall. Many residents will also remember the Alhambra Picture House and theatre, the Tower Billiard Hall and the Ideal Snooker. I hope this article has helped readers to recall memories of the way Shotton used to be.

Hi Mavis nice to hear from you, yes I remember all those who lived in our road, where are they all now? I now live just outside Manchester. I am now a widow but I have three children, six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren so I am not alone. Keep in touch, would love to hear from you.

Hi Viv, great to see your comments too! Andy from Scotland, I remember playing in the fields behind Westminster Crescent, Cath Logan and Huggis. Jumping off the swings into large mounds of cut grass. Ah, I can smell it now! I work in and around Auckland and I met Eric Dodd from Connah's Quay who resides in Northland, I recognised his accent and knew he came from the same part of the world as me!

Phyllis Parker/Hamer, Connah's Quay dated Wed Feb 14 12:47:07. Hi Phyllis, I know it's a long time since you wrote the message, but here's hoping that you read it, or some of the others I mention below read it and get in touch. You lived next door to the Fenwicks in Richmond Road, also some families there that I remember were: Martins, Whitehouse, Page, Speed, Humphries, Stephenson, Walkers, Parry, Lewis, Kemp Williams, Wigglesworth, Smith, (remember Judy Smith?) and lots of others, it was a big street! I hope you are well, get in touch anyone, if you remember the old times.

Kay Ellsum, Australia, Kay you have lots of aunts and uncles. Your dad Eddie is my half brother, you have an aunt Sylvia, aunt Mary, aunt Pauline, aunt Maureen and last aunt Christine, and also uncle Peter, and uncle Terry. Your Nanna was May, known as Mary, and after your grandad was killed in the war she married my dad, Tom Dixon. It has been so nice reading all the memories of people I knew.

Irene, Ref Rivertown. I grew up through Rivertown and the BB - unfortunately saw your post too late but as I left Shotton in 1953 I don't think I would have known many, if any. Hope the days went well. Malcolm. I knew a Millichap, may well have been you but memories blur after 50+ years.

Hi Dicky Dodd. How are you old mate? Hope you and your family are all OK. Hope to hear from you soon. Gite (westender)

Irene, I was a member of the Boys Brigade with my cousin Melvyn Lloyd in the late 1950s. I will not be able to join you for the event on 5 May, but wish you all well. I recall a very sad funeral at the Rivertown when a whole family was laid to rest and Shotton turned out in sympathy.
    Fri May 1 07:54:54 2009

    Irene - ex Shotton
This is to anyone who has every been a member of Rivertown UR Church or any of the youth organisation e.g. Boys' Brigade. The Church has had a complete makeover with the back of the Church being completely changed. Why not come along to a Gala Concert featuring Brymbo Male Choir on the 8th May or to an Open Day and Coffee Morning on the the 16th May? Please try and come along and make these bumper occasions.

To Jimmy Harding. I remember you Jimmy. I used to live in Eleanor Terrace at the top of Jubilee St. I can also remember a family from Health St, one of the boys was named Tony Morris I think he had TB and there was also twin boys, there was also Alan Matheson from Ash Grove.
    Tue Apr 14 10:25:27 2009

    Tom Barley, Cadole, Mold
Hello Jimmy Harding, nice to see that you have found this site and to know that you are OK. Yes I remember your mother though we were young when she passed away, and your dad had so much to do without her. I remember you leaving school and going to work in Hunters the grocers that was just a couple of shops away from the Rivertown church. I had the pleasure of meeting David Anglesea a couple of years ago, he told me that Albert Matthews had died which is a shame. I went for a walkabout down Ash Grove a while ago and around the 'backs' into Health Street, it brought back memories of playing 'Devil up the drain pipe', 'Jack Jack show the light' and of course 'Knick Knock'. Keep writing and again nice to hear from you.

    James Harding (Jimmy) Stockport
To Tom Barley and anyone else who remembers me. Came across this site by accident. It has been great reading it and has brought back so many memories. I used to live at no. 3 Health St and then moved to no. 6 (now demolished!). If anyone has any memories of my mum and dad Ethel (nee Bottom) and George Harding I would love to hear. My dad was a blacksmith and also worked at John Summers. Someone mentioned Ma Worrell teaching at Shotton primary school - I have painful memories of that woman! Someone said that many of the houses on Health Street have been demolished. They are mostly still standing. I went back last week and took some photos for old times' sake.

Hi Tony Jackson, that was the one, do you have any info or contacts maybe? Respect your help.
    Thu Apr 9 10:00:20 2009

    David Roberts, Denbigh
Allan Smith - yes, I am the David Roberts son of Ted who worked at the BRS. I remember you living in Chester Close. Yours was one of the first houses to get extended. The comments reminded me that there were other big emplyoyers in the area other than the steelworks where I had 13 very happy years. Just a note, Gib Carter was Carters the chip shop mentioned earlier.

Brinley Jones, Flint. Shotton born and bred
Gwenda, what a coincidence, clicked on here to catch up on things and noticed your name. I had not seen your Tommy for about 30 years but bumped into him yesterday morning by Kingsway whilst going for a walk with my dad. Had a good talk about local football and how there was no characters now playing locally. We used to play for Flint together. Glenn Parry, nice to see you're still going matey. Talked to Bill Seaman on the phone a couple of years ago. He's doing OK.

Re. L Crofts comment dated 13/10/08. Yes, we are the Crofts family! My mum Jackie (Tattum) is sister to Jez, John and the late June. Sam and Meg Crofts were my lovely nan and grandad.

    John Jeffreys, WREXHAM
Hi, I remember Shotton well. I used to live in Buckley and used go to the dance hall. I think it was called Vorn Hall. I, at one time, worked at air base in Sealand. Made lots of freinds from SHOTTON.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of Greata Shannon? Used to live in Roland Street, Shotton, lost contact in 1990. If anyone knows I would like to get in touch, thanks.

To Janet Lumborg in Staffordshire. I am one of the Lumborg family from Connah's Quay. I am the great, great grandaughter of William Lumborg (born Bristol), who married Sarah Jones of Connah's Quay in the late 1800s. I saw you message saying that you wanted to hear from the family. Let me know what you would like to hear about.

Hi Ron Dodd, it's good to know people still remember me. Still about! Hope you're well. All the best.

    Karrie Green
I want to say a big thank you to Raymond Lloyd Dodd, DC and RON DODD for replying back to me about my mum. You don't know how much it means to me reading your replies. My mum would often tell me stories of what she got up to when she little and that's something I will miss.
Ron, I only seen my grandad a few times but never got to know him, or my nan, but my mum would tell the most wonderful stories about him, and how close they were when she was growing up. I only got to know Alan a few years ago when my mum was taken in to hospital and he came to visit her. We lost contact again, until October when he came to say goodbye to my mum. He gave me photos of my mum from when she was little with my nan and grandad, so they are something I will treasure.
DC, I had to smile when I read your reply. My mum would tell me that when she was little she was not allowed to go in the parlour, but would often sneak in there now and again. The pictures Alan gave me are great, and she looks so cheeky in them all, and now I know why everyone said that I look like her when she was younger.
Raymond Lloyd Dodd, thank you so much. My mum will be missed, and still can't believe she is no longer here. And thank you all again.

    Thu Feb 5 10:15:23 2009

    Allan Smith, Welwyn Garden City
To Dave Roberts. Dave you say that you lived in Caernarvon Close in Shotton. I lived in Chester Close and I think I may have worked with your dad for many years at BRS? If I am right then I would like to hear from you. Your dad and I spent many happy times together at Chester, Wrexham and Everton matches. In fact we went to all the 66 World cup matches at Goodison. Let me know if I am right (your mum's name was Margaret and you lived at about number 36 in Caernarvon Close).

    Raymond Lloyd Dodd, Prestatyn
Hi Haz, I do try to take life seriously most times (when collecting rent, talking to people less fortunate than myself). Regarding the holiday people I can't recall that sunny, I can only assume the only one on holiday could have been from over the border, Shotton or Queensferry maybe. It couldn't have been Flint, they had their own holiday resort. Just before I sign off I am very sorry to Karrie Green, we all grew up together with your mum (hard times), true westender.

    Vince M'Keown, Grimsby, Ontario
I was interested to see the mention of the Wall City Jazz Club at Quaintways. It was always a good night there, I believe Gordon Vickers was the manager, or whatever, who had something to do with the running of it. Although I left the U.K. in 1956 I still have his business card and the autographed photo of the group at that time. I seem to remember that the 'Big Names' (Ken Collyer) etc. used to be at the Chester Drill hall. When did the Jazz Club finally close down? One band that used to be around was The Saints and the singer was The Angel, [HONEST!!]. I was interested to see, a few years ago, that she was living in Oakville, a suburb of Toronto, a more famous one time resident of that very attractive town was Sir Stanley Mathews. I really enjoy this site, even different age groups and generations seem to have a collective memory of C.Q. and Shotton. Not to take away Hazel Kerr's new appointment, but I believe the C.Q. population in 1955 was about 8000 and is now about 16,000. Another time related question, when did that 'rite of passage' The Monkey Run finally end? Thanks for any information.

    D C. Flint
To Karrie Green, I remember your mum very well we went through school together. I remember walking home from school and calling in your mum's house many times. Janet would make toast and we would sneak into the parlour where the piano was and try to play it. I also remember Janet's mum and dad, they were lovely people. I have a photo of myself and your mum and other friends on a trip to Lake Vyrnwy in 1961.

    Hazel Kerr, Scotland
Raymond I forgot to add that the census count could have been 2 or 3, maybe someone taking a holiday in sunny Connahs Quay, what do you say to that then? I have no doubt you will come up with a smart answer.
    Tue Feb 3 10:25:53 2009

    Hazel Kerr, Scotland
Hiya Raymond, I like your sense of humour, I am sure the population must have increased tremendously even since I left the quay. I had a good laugh at that question very funny I think. I hope you are well, if ever I am home it would be nice to meet up.
    Tue Feb 3 10:24:33 2009

    Raymond Lloyd Dodd, Prestatyn
Hi Haz, I'm back, I'm promoting you to head of imformation (in the nicest possibly way). I'm sure you know this answer: what was the poplation of the Quay just after the war (1945 on) and the present count? The reason I'm asking this is when I visit it never seems empty any more (or is this a sign of ageing?).
    Mon Feb 2 09:08:08 2009

    Sue from Shotton
Message for Paul Neal - I live in Brook Road now and the dentist surgery you refer to is still there but is now a property and finance company. It has been painted many colours in its time but is now cream!

Brinley Jones, Flint. Shotton born and bred.
    J. George, whoops my mistake, the Martha Henderson I am referring to ran the Castle Inn (Hendy's) with her husband. John Butler, yes, I remember that Dummy at the BB reunion, I thought it was Mike, only joking Mike.

    Barry Williams, Hawarden
Hi Jean (Bilingsley) Jones. You remember the black sweater with the white stripe! Wow, how cool was that. I remember you in a red and grey striped cardigan in our first class at Deeside Secondary. I can see so many faces in my mind but I have forgotten all of the names, but they were really good times, no pressure just innocent fun.
    Fri Jan 30 10:22:52 2009

    J George, Chester
John Butler, thanks for your reply - it's great to read your memories of Jack Evans and 'Mortimer Smirk'! Jack's sister still lives in Shotton, so she'll be pleased to hear that he's still remembered. I'll let her know. Brinley Jones - if you're related to Martha Henderson, did you see the message I was replying to from Stuart Meighan way down the page? Seems you might have a connected there (although that Martha appeared to have the maiden name 'Brown').
    Thu Jan 29 09:55:22 2009

Brinley Jones, Flint. Shotton born and bred.
    J. George, you mentioned Martha Henderson, she was my grandad James Jones's sister. I remember their father Captain James Jones (big Jim), I have a photo of myself and great grandad Jim on his 92nd birthday, sadly the year he passed away. Patricia Lomax (Pat), have you got a brother Dave? If so we were in the gym team together in Aston (Asda) Sec Modern, have not seem him since 1966.
    Wed Jan 28 14:10:29 2009

    John Butler -ex Shotton
Nice to hear mention of Jack Evans. He was a leading light in local entertainment circles in his day. Jack's ventriloquist's dummy was a unique Deeside character. He was called "Mortimer Smirk". Despite looking like a cross between a mangled Archie Andrews and Frankenstein, he did have have a great following amongst grown-ups. But yes, he did tend to frighten the kids. Mortimer fans will be delighted to know he still going strong! Jack bequeathed him to my good friend Fred Hill -who used to have the newsagents in Mold Road, Connahs Quay. The last time I saw Mortimer perform was a couple of years back when Fred brought him along, as a "special guest" to address a reunion of Shotton Boys Brigade. As he was gently lifted out of his suitcase home, the now seriously vintage, wooden-headed trouper took a quick look about him and was heard to mutter under his breath that he felt he should be awarded a prize for being the best-preserved chap in the room!
    Tue Jan 27 10:56:21 2009

RON DODD [KNOWN AS DICKY], CONNAHS QUAY
TO KARRIE GREEN, Janet was born next door to me. We used to all play together around the streets. Allan was the same age as my elder brother, Richard. Sadly he passed away at the age of 43. My dad was with your grandad when he sadly passed away. We lived in the shop on the corner of Church St and Waterloo St. It was very sad to hear about Jan. We never had much in those days but we had lots of fun. Robby Taylor was also a good mate of mine. If I can help in any other way I would only be to pleased to do so. Ron Dodd, A TRUE WESTENDER

    Karrie Green
Does anyone remember my mum Janet Elizabeth Butler who lived in Church Street Connahs Quay? She was born in 1946. She had a brother called Alan and her mum and dad were Ernest and Sissy. She married Geoffrey Jones and later moved to Shotton. Sadly my mum passed away in October aged 62. She would tell me all about growing up in the Quay, and would love to hear from anyone who knew her. Also, I want to say thanks to Robby Taylor for telling me about Billy Speed. If anyone can tell more about him could you please message me?
    Mon Jan 26 08:45:30 2009

    Hazel Kerr, Scotland
Sorry Jenny but my friend doesn't know the Griffiths family you are searching for. I hope you are lucky in your quest.
    Fri Jan 23 07:58:51 2009

    J George, Chester
Glyn Jones; Patricia Lomax. I can answer a couple of your queries on the pantomimes - during the war years the pantomimes were put on by my dad's step-brother, Jack Evans (he married Winnie Noakes). He was also the owner of the ventriloquist's dummy that you used to be scared of Patricia, I would guess! Also, Stuart Meighan, my dad remembers the Henderson family very well - your mum, aunties, uncle, and grandparents. His aunt, Alice Bithell (nee Vaughan) was a close friend of Martha Henderson. Anyone remember any tales of my great grandmother, Mrs Vaughan, and her daughter Gertie (George, then Evans) who ran the chip shop on Chester road for some time?
    Wed Jan 21 15:10:17 2009

    Alan Davis (Puza)
Born in Hawarden. Lived at 23 Cornwall Road, then moved to 2 Health St, Shotton. Went to Queensferry CP school, then Hawarden High school, then on to Deeside High school, leaving in 1976. Went on to work in steelworks 'til made redundant in 1981. Had some great times in Shotton. Now living in Scotland, and have been for 25 years. Would like to hear more from old mates.

Linda, Ireland (Shotton born and bred)
Hi Vivian, my goodness, your da is 93? He's doing really well isn't he. Tell him I said hello and ask him if he remembers the bird house that I made and gave to him when I was little. My mum and Susan should put their beds in Asda, they're always in it ha ha. Glad to hear your dad is doing so well. I don't really remember you to be honest, do you remember me when I was little? Still little, but aged, ha ha, 32 now, getting on...

Jenny Mciver Wirral, you won't know me but I come from Connah's Quay. I am friendly with a Mr Griffiths and his wife and I know that he came from Shotton, he comes from quite a big family. If you wish I could give him a phone and get some info for you, and see if he is related and if he wants to get in touch.

    Jenny Mciver, Heswall, Wirral
What an amazing site. Can anyone please help? I know this is a long shot, but does anyone know of the Griffiths family who lived in Ash Grove? George John Griffiths lived there in the 1920s. I don't know a lot about this family but I am researching my family history and if any family members are still around I would love to hear from you.

Hi Ronnie (I never call you Dicky). I miss my dad something terrible, and am crying while writing this to you, he had such a great sense of humour and came up here to bonnie Scotland at least every four weeks, so you can understand why I miss him so much, he was the light of my life. I hope life is treating you and Sandra well, who knows I might take a visit down sometime and meet up with my old friends. I keep in touch with Marion Jones from Linden Avenue and she gives me all the gen. Stay in touch, it is a way of keeping me close to all my old friends and neighbours.

Ron Dodd (known as Dicky), Connah's Quay
Hello Hazel, not forgetting Andy. Well Hazel, I read all the gossips on the pages. I am bound to, coming from Englefield but I don't do much writing. But I couldn't leave you out. When reading the pages I never knew you worked at Courtalds but saying that I was away a lot roaming the country. Them days are long gone. By the way your mam, dad, and my mate Kev, you couldn't get any better. Kev's plodding along. I often chat over the fence. I had many a laugh with Bill. Don't half miss him.

Ron Dodd (known as Dicky), Connah's Quay
Hi Allan, remember you well. I first started my driving career with Alf Parry and son at the age of 17 and a half. Sadly, all the local transport firms have gone ie, Parrys, Boswells, Jones of Abergele. There's no end. But getting back to BRS can you remember me having a little rev and go? When I was on the backshift, Ken Lovett, Dick Pugh and Bibby would pinch it and ride round the yard. You couldn't tell Lovett to get off it - he would have flattened me. I think it gave them a boost before they went on change over to Rowley Road, Coventry. They used to change with Hampstead. By the way Allen, you used to wind them up. Bibby didn't take much but they were great guys and real knights of the road. I often think about them, don't forget I was only in my twenties like you so I wouldn't think there's so many left. Anyway Allan, hope to hear from you soon - just a few more names for you; Mick Dolby, Georgey Nick, Len Peters, Reg Thomos, Ernie Bedford, Little Ned, Len Bewley, Les Diyer, second man Bill the Joiner, and, for now, my arch rival John Ellis who went to Runcorn. All the best Al, Ron - that's my posh name.
    Wed Jan 7 08:26:56 2009

    Allan Smith, Welwyn Garden City
Attention of Ron Dodd. Ron, I ran the traffic office at BRS Queensferry from 1959 until I left to attend the managemnet course at Bromford Lane. Do you remember me? At the depot at that time were Jim Woods, Gib Carter, Maureen, Brenda, Enis and Isobel in the office. Drivers were, amongst many, Con Bibby, Jack Smith, Dick Pugh, Peter Williams. In the garage was Arthur Montford, Mr Woolf. The management team was, Bill Hughes, Jack Hughes, Ossie Wright. Let me know what you remember. By the way, the transport cafe in question was originally called the Tudor Cafe!
    Tue Jan 6 08:22:07 2009

    Grahan Hillman, S. Wales
    For att, Ron Dodd (Dicky).
Thank you for replying to my query regarding the cafe/b&b. I also used to go into a local social club if we were overnighting and have a game of bingo just up the road from the cafe. I can't tell you the name of the club. Did the pick up point in Wrexham, ring a bell where we picked the lead up from, I think we could only manage about 15 ton owing to the 24 ton limit in those far off days. I am still working but in heavy haulage and as things go I will be in your area next week to pick up a caterpillar excavator at Pant quarry near Halkyn on the A55. May be possible to meet and have a chat. All the very best from me for the moment and a happy new year to you.

    Tue Jan 6 08:20:58 2009

    Dicky Dodd, Connah's Quay, Flintshire
Hi mate, bet you will not remember me, 40 plus years is a long time. I was a tramper, then onto the back shift, then back to tramper. Where I was, Allan Dunbar was not far away. I remember you when we were on afternoons, when the dreaded Jimmy Woods went home you would love to ride round the yard on the first bike you got hold of. I could go on and on. This could be the start of a lot of interesting stories. Hope you remember, waiting to hear off you. Regards, Dicky - AEC lorry number HDM 575D CH67.

    Hazel Kerr, Scotland
Hiya Raymond, nice to hear back from you. I can't remember Garry, Neal or Robby Taylor but remember Malcolm Forrester. A Robby Taylor from Shotton was asking about Rosina Conlon and Ann Speed. Ann passed away last year, she came from off the park and a brother Billy who played for the Nomads. He died some years ago. I am glad life is treating you well I get a bit upset when I go onto this site because it brings back memories good and not so good. I miss mum and dad and shed a wee tear for them but it is also brill to be in touch with all the people that I haven't seen for many years. I saw your Ronnie on the site as well. Hi Ronnie, our Kev keeps me updated about you, and may I say I am forever grateful to you for being a good neighbour to my mum and dad in the past. Hope you are in better health now.
    Tue Jan 6 08:09:03 2009

    Vivien Jones
Hia Linda (Wooler) Ireland, yes we did live at no 50. I see your mum and Susan in Asda shopping quite often, didn't know you went to Ireland. I live in Connah's Quay, we've got 4 sons and 2 step sons, 10 grandchildren and two more due this year. My dad's still going strong, he's 93 in July and lives in a bungalow now, the stairs were getting too much for him. Great to hear from you, Viv Jones (Corbett).

Hi Haz. After a few years' break (Windows 98) still very rusty - it's wonderful to see all these names. Like yourself, I feel connected to home and past. Pity I can't turn back time, but it's a good substitute. I would like to mention a few names for now.
1: Robby Taylor was our leader (1960 on)
2: Malcolm (Fred) Forrester ariel leader man
3: Garry Neal's father = best cobbler in Eales (my leather wallet repair).

Ron Dodd (known as Dicky), Connah's Quay
Hi Graham Hill, great to hear from a past trucker. My name is Ron Dodd (nickname Dicky) born and bred in Connah's Quay, have been a trucker all my working life. I drove for BRS in the '60s. The cafe you are enquiring about was called Frank Barlows. I have been there many many times. Times have changed, it is now a hotel and leisure centre known as The Gateway to Wales which runs alongside the main A55 and then onto the M56. Hope this has been a little help for you. If there is anything else I can help you with just let me know, from one old trucker to another. Great to hear from an oldie, happy new year, Dicky.

    Graham Hillman, Abercynon, south Wales
For the attention of Allen Smith, Welwyn Garden City.Thank you very much for replying to my query so soon, I have been trying to think of that name for a very long time. When my uncle and I would park for the night it was always interesting for me to watch all the different haulage companies that would come into the cafe and park overnight, many such as Entress Transport, Gwynne Bowen of Gorseinon, Glyn S. John. I can also remember a company called Jones of Liverpool and they were coloured light blue with a fleet of aec artics. Some return loads back to Aberdare meant that we would have to go somewhere in the Wrexham area to pick up pallets of lead, one of the very few places that you wouldn't have to handball the entire lot onto the back of an octopus. Times have moved on, some things for the better, my friend Howard who is now 78 years also worked for Brs in the Cwm Ebbw Vale depot and also in the Dowlais depot, Merthyr Tydfil. He drove a Jensen lorry and an old Proctor lorry, the latter being made I'm sure by Prails of Hereford. Thank you once again for your swift reply and have a very happy new year. Yours thankfully Graham Hillman.

Hi Raymond, what a lovely surprise I got when I got your message. I knew you had to know me well by calling me Haz, it's many years since I last saw you, I hope you are well. Stay in touch and hope you are in good health now.

    Allan Smith, Welwyn Garden City.
Attention of Graham Hillman. Hi Graham. I think the transport cafe you are referring to was the "The Tudor Cafe" (believe it or not went by the site on Boxing Day and told my folks what it was). I used to work at BRS in Queensferry so was always booking in drivers from various parts of the country. Happy days.

Hi Haz, born in Connah's Quay. Frequently visit Deeside (possibly too much free time on my hands). Although after nearly forty years I still get home sick (may be a calling). For the last ten years I've been a landlord (housing).

Re: Carrie Green, nee Jones. I remember you in school, I was in the same class as you growing up, my name is Linda Wooler, your dad, Jeff, was friends with my dad, Jimmy Jock. The last I heard of you was that you had a child, must have been 11 or 12 years ago now though. I'm living in Ireland now for the past 11 years with my 2 kids. What have you been up to with yourself?

Re: Paula Jones. I knew it was you on this site talking about Styles, I think we are the only ones who seem to have fond memories of the place. You still haven't e-mailed me, what you waiting for, ha ha. How was your xmas? Mine was grand, went to Gerry's mum's again, the usual. if anyone else is reading this and went to Deeside High, and left the first year to leave under the name John Summers High, write back. I'm sure we left in 1993, not too sure on the dates there, it's the age, nearly 32 now. I would like to hear from people I went to school with to see what they're doing nowadays and if they're married and have kids, and if they still live around the area. I loved Deeside High, and I am seriously thinking of moving back to Shotton after 11 years in Ireland so my 2 children can have some of the experiences I had there.

Re: Vivian Jones (ne Corbett). Did your family live at number 50 Chevrons by any chance? I grew up at number 54 and had a neighbour called Mr Corbett as we all called him, he had a green house in the back garden and a shed out the back which he used as a workshop. He used to fix my mother's window whenever we kicked a ball through it and if we ever needed our bike wheels pumped up he would always do that for us. I can remember making a bird house in school and giving it to him, and I think he still had it when he sold his house, which is still strange to see someone else living in it. You might not know me but you probably know my mother, Sheila.

I just stumbled on the website of Queensferry and Connah's Quay and I remember staying in a cafe/bed & breakfast which I think was in Welsh Road back in the mid 1960s. I can remember also across the road was the hotel Leprechaun can anyone please tell me what the name of the b&b was? It had a large lorry park outside for the drivers to stay overnight. I stayed there many times after delivering reels of Aberdare cables with my uncle to all parts of Liverpool and north Wales. Thanking you in anticipation, Graham Hillman.

I have been reading the contents of this article with great interest and pleasure. They have brought back many, many happy and some not so happy memories. I was born in Shotton, in Butler Street, and later lived in Eleanor Terrace and Rowden Street. I remember Middletons Garage well and the difficulty in leaving it after filling up with petrol, you had to reverse into Rowden Street before moving off. My junior school was St Ethelwolds, though I did go to Shotton Junior and Infants for one day because of a mistake by my mother. I can recall during the war having to take one of the Brierleys home in case there was an air raid on Shotton. I spent more time than I should in the Tower Billiard Hall and "Ikes" Ideal Billiard Hall. I used to take the week's takings to the bank for Ike, can you imagine a 12/13 year doing that today? I later attended the Central School. Oddly, I later taught there also, when it was part of Connah's Quay High School. My first real girlfriend was June Fisher from Nelson Street who lived there with her parents and Uncle Walter who had been in the Paras during the war. When I got married in 1956 I moved in with my wife Iris nee Fellows, the daughter of Captain Joe Fellows, into Ryeland Street and later we bought our house in Connah's Quay. I wish we and the children today could go back to the times when we looked forward to walking up to Ewloe Castle on Good Friday with a bottle of water, drinkable in those days. I would be glad to hear from anyone who remembers me in Shotton or the Quay.

Nev Brierly. The garage on the corner of Rowden Street was Ken Middleton's. He lived with his wife in Bridge Street. My dad would garage his car there overnight. We lived at the Mayfair fish and chip shop. Bentham’s, 'The Mayfair', was the best chippy in Shotton. I went to St Ethelwolds School and then Rowleys Drive before going to Aston. I remember you Sue Corbett, hope you are well.

Found this site accidentally while looking for photos of the old Shotton carnival in the '50s that was held at the back of the old Central School and also the cup and shield winning rounders and netball team for Queensferry CP '63/4. Vicki Maybury was also on that team along with Patsie Jones. I used to go around with Helen Lomax in the '70s so I heard a few tales about her and Patsie's cooking lessons and make up tips from Vicky. I lived in 40 Green Lane and, of course, I remember Glen Parry (bangers and hide and seek come to mind) are you still telling folk how to make woodchip paint, Glen? I went to Hawarden GS and can remember all the staff mentioned - not too difficult for me as I married Richard Johnson who was the year above mine so we can recall and remind each other (sad but true). I started tonight aiming to show my sons that I was sporty in my youth and I have ended up feeling like an oldie...but it doesn't seem all that long ago - does it?!

To Steve Howarth, I was brought up in Green Lane until I was 24 and Pete Treadwell and his dad Bill taught my brother judo for years. Pete used to fix my scooters for me when I first got Vespas, and would regularly make fun of me for not having enough mirrors!

Hi all. I used to live in Rowden Street in Shotton and went to St Ethelwolds School in the late '60s early '70s. Does anyone remember Adele Oliver from one of the avenues up Chester Close that went to St Ethelwolds?

    Steve Howarth from Ashton Hayes
We lived at 25 Nelson Street from 1960 until early 1980s. My mum, Edna Howarth, sadly passed away in 2003 having spent the last 15 years of her life living at Dodds Court off Shotton Lane. Amazing times, amazing memories. Where are you Pete Treadwell, Carol Hughes, Kim Roberts, Tina Wooley, Lyn Berkley and Cerys Jones (from Ash Grove)? I was amused to see the message "KC to SH" on the facing wall of "The Ranch" at the bottom of Nelson Street in (obviously resilient) yellow gloss paint dating from 1961! The KC is Kim Cussons who lived opposite. So many good memories. We had a gang based in "the Backs" aka the railway embankment (HQ being beneath the old Signal Box). I remember injuring my leg badly falling from a tree at the back of Mike Scarfo's house and needing 40+ stitches. I also remember Mona Jeff's shop at the foot of the pedestrian railway bridges in Jubilee Street, and "The Jokey" on the main road at the top of Nelson Street where you could buy cheap cattys that would just about get you through Saturday before the elastics went. Does anyone remember, or have info on "The Burning Hills" which were a relic of the coal mining activity in the area? They were one field removed from Killins Lane, just off the public footpath. They have long since been flattened, but in the '60s and earlier, they used to smoke after a heavy rainfall, a similar phenomenon was to be seen off the top level railway line just before the Dee bridge above "Thousand Bushes" where we used to play on the old rolling stock. I assume it was down to the ignited coal still smouldering underground, and ventilated through fissures in the earth. We were always warned off going there in case the ground gave way and we fell into the fires below. Mount Vesuvius in Higher Shotton, who would have thought? How lucky we were to have Wepre Woods close by and Ewloe Castle, where we used to climb the walls at major risk to life and limb. I vividly remember a guy scrabbling to the top of the shattered circular keep in a pair of winklepickers. The opening of the baths in Connahs Quay was a landmark event. Remember the top board in the 11 foot six deep end? I learned to scuba dive there with the Flints Sub-Aqua Club, who used to meet at the Institute in Queensferry. Would be great to hear from anyone who shared these times and memories.

Hi Patricia Lomax from Shotton. I do know you but can't put a face to your name. I come from the Quay but spent most of my time in Shotton. I used to go to the Ideal cafe and Whiteheads on Saturday nights. I would go to the Vaughan hall. You might know my cousins who went to Central school, Marie Ball and Barbara Ball. I have lots of great memories of the times I spent going to Shotton with my friends. The Efleys are my relations and the Pearsons and Norrys. Do you remember Bobby Norry he was a bouncer at the Vaughan. I also live in Fife between Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy. My husband and I go up to St Andrews most Thursdays for a day out. I hope you are well. Maybe we could meet up sometime and talk of the good old days.

Hi Robby Taylor. I knew Ann Speed very well. Went about with her in my younger days. Her mum worked at the New Inn pub at that time so we are talking a long time ago. I remember Rosina Conlon too. Ann passed away some months ago. I feel I have to inform you of this because I get quite upset when I see you asking about her. She was a lovely person very bubbly and down to earth. I come from the Quay and was known as Beaton. I can't put a face to you but I have been in Scotland for over 40 years. I hope you don't mind me informing you about Ann.

    Paul Neal, Chester, Cheshire
Grew up in Sandycroft but have many memories of Shotton 1970-80s. Going to the ice rink on Saturday afternoons when the leisure centre was brand new. The old Plaza cinema, Queensferry, to watch Sat afternoon films. Woolworths for singles. Sure they where only about 45p or so then. The old dentist surgery on the corner of Brook Rd. Is that building still there anyone? One great place, never forgot my Shotton childhood memories.

    Kim Ellsum
Hi Kay, I am your cousin, Kim, who came over in 1981 to see your dad, Malcolm, known as Eddie to us. I have been living in Bristol for over 20 years with my two wonderful children, Sian and Benjamin. I am very interested in hearing about the Ellsum as I cannot find any history about them other than our Great Grandfather being a butcher. It appears there is another Ellsum family in Spalding which I am going to investigate. Please send your father my love.

    Mary Williams (Nickson)
Peter Lewis (Alltami). Disappointed not to hear more from you. You said you were writing your memories of your childhood. I did do mine for my grandchildren when they were doing a project about WW2 at school. Mine were from 1939-1945 just my memories of growing up during the war, it was just family stuff really. Remembering names from the past, what happened to John Wall, do you know? Hope to keep in touch by this site.

Hi there, can anyone remember the Crofts family in Shotton? My Grandad's name was Les Crofts. He had brother who I think was a twin called Sam. I know there is a Jez Crofts who still lives there. My grandad worked at the steelworks.

You wore a black jumper which had a white stripe down the sleeves, my god, I thought you were the best thing on two legs...Tell your wife I was only 14 at the time, but ooooooh such happy memories. Had a message off Gary Cooper recently, but don't see anyone I remember from our school days. Can't believe that we are pensioners now can you? My youngest daughter Sara is 30 on the 9th Oct. That really does make me feel OLD. Well Barry, lovely hearing from you. Stay healthy and do keep in touch.

Hi Christina hope you get this email as I emailed you back and it never went through. What was your mum's maiden name? That was great for me to read that she was brought up by my mum. What was your aunty's name who lived in the prefabs? The changes are unbelievable for me as when I was in the prefabs there was nothing else about only fields apart from Bryn Road and Upper Bryn Road. It was happy days in the prefabs being such a small community. Take care and best wishes to your mum. It would be nice to meet up if ever I am down again.

Alan Roscoe, good to hear from you so I have sent you a few lines. I recall the 33 Club and the swamp where we collected grass snakes in jam jars. When they built the bungalows at the top of Strickland Street, mom and dad moved in to 76 from Butler Street. They named it "Banfield" grandma's maiden name.

I have nothing but happy memories of our time together at Deeside Secondary, and also after school on the Rock and the Transport Hall Dance, really happy days. Hi Viv it was nice to get a reply from you. It is a great way of being in touch, especially for me being up in Scotland. Tell Mrs Jones that I have mentioned her working in the Mayfair. BBC Wales have been asking for women to get in touch as they are doing a programme about them all and calling it the Rayon Queens. I will keep you informed about it concerning Courtaulds. Hope this finds you all well.

    Pete Bennett, Connah's Quay
Good to see so many familiar names ...it is a good site for memories and to see where everyone is.... the scooter club, the things we got up to, eh mike! Good memories. Bumped into Paul Davenport a couple of weeks ago and we got talking about the 33 club and Paul use to train there with Fred Fullwood. I don't have memories of it, Paul saying it was next to Shotton Lane Social Club. My earliest memories is when they were buildling the bungalows in Strickland Street where I think Pete Lloyd had his accident. On the 33 club field I remember making the arrows made of cane with cardboard flights in and hurl them down the field with string - be classed as a dangerous weapon now. The things we did to keep us entertained. If Glen Parry reads this - was you that done it not me!
    Sat Sep 27 09:35:26 2008

    Elaine Pearson (Dunn) Spain
Pat Griffiths, I remember you well, my mum, Eva Dunn (Dixon) is your mum's cousin. Didn't you work for a short while at Manweb on Sealand Rd? My hubby, Mickey Pearson, also remembers both yourself and Helen Lomax. I also remember Elma, she worked for Welsh Water in Mold when I was there. Pete Bennet also gave me this address!

Jen Roberts - remember you and Paul 'Doc', Elaine and I used to spend lots of time at your place in Mostyn and I remember lots of great times with Doc at the Palace, Isle of Wight pop festival and Deeside Scooter Club - they were the 'good old days'!

Hello Hazel, my mother in law Mona was very pleased to hear you had been asking for her. All the family send their regards and wish to be remembered to you and also remember the good old days in the pre fabs. You wouldn't recognise parts of Connah's Quay now, so many things have changed and there's not many of the old characters left. But then I suppose the next generation will say exactly the same thing.

Hi Hazel Kerr. I was only talking about the old prefabs to my mum the other day, my anuty lived in them as well. When I told mum you got in touch she told me at one time she lived next door to your mum when they were young so we go back a long way. As you said about my dad he loved the old Albion, he used to get all the old pepple singing good bye. They would all raise there hankies and wave at him. He could sing. I remember Dicky Rosedale and his family, all the old dears who used the Albion, it was a good place to go to then.

Louise Thomas (St Helens) good to see a message from you. Patricia Lomax (St Andrews) sorry about not getting back to you. I did have your details but have misplaced them. It is interesting that you both are looking into the family histories. I am also interested in that but living so far away it is very difficult to look up the information (it seems to cost a fortune when subscribing to the websites). Any help would be appreciated. Patricia, I also remember the dummy and it also scared the living daylights out of me. Mike Millington (Shotton) sorry about not replying but it has been a while since I have been on the website. I hope I can get your Mum's details so I can give them to my mum. My mum was born on 21/12/42 so that should help when deciding who was Dr Gavin's first baby. Anyway, sorry again about not replying earlier and hope to talk soon.

Hi Vivien, I don't know you but I know Gareth and Wendy very well. I lived in the prefabs before moving to Scotland on my marriage. My friend, Marion Jones who came from Linden Avenue, keeps me updated with all that goes on round about the quay. She was talking to Gareth's mum just a few weeks ago, and was saying she is still driving her car about - what marvel she is. I have very fond memories of all the family. Tell Mrs Jones I often think of her, and also say hello to Wendy from me. I knew her husband too but can't remember his name. This website is great for me as it lets me see people's names that I haven't seen for years with being in Scotland.

Hi Christina, the last I was home was just over a year ago. I stayed at my brothers in Shotton. Billy is his name. When I used to come home I did see all the changes, and found it very hard to cope with. I grew up in the prefabs and have wonderful memories of them. The last time I recall seeing your dad was in the Albion Club but that was many years ago. He was with Dickie Rosedale who lived next door to us in the prefabs. He was a lovely man too but about your dad he made me feel great that night because he stood up and told everyone that I was one of the loveliest looking girls in the Quay, that's to be debated though. I look very much like my mum. I miss my mum and so do'nt come down so often now and miss dad to. It's not the same now the link is broken. Well Christina, I shall say goodnight now and wish you well, and hope that we can stay in touch. I am sure your mum will remember me. Best wishes, Hazel.

Nev Brierley, in reply to your query as to the garage on the corner of Rowden St. It was owned by Ken Middleton of Bridge St. During the war it was run by Ken's wife. I well remember one of tour mentors Fred Pickford lived in Spring St.

Hi Irene, so sorry to hear about Ken, we had some good times together. Pat is my niece (brother George's daughter) we lived at number 6 before them, me, dad (Harry), mum(Beatrice), Alf and sisters Peggy and Joyce. Do you remember swapping comics on your front lawn? If I remember right your dad's name was Ern and you had a conservatory on your house. Where did Ken finish up? The last time I saw him was in the '80s when he visited me. I remember your Lol, tall good looking lad. I have so many memories of the things Ken and I got up to like running away from home and spending the night in the woods with Ken Lloyd (one night was enough!). Do you recall the Powells from Marlowe Ave, the tennis courts opposite and Smiths shop (we all used to get chased from there!), the Bunnels and "The White Bridge, Kilins Lane" where we all used to meet up? In answer to the question of my name, I am Harry Neville and was known by Harry when I was young and then preferred Nev as I got older. Take care and keep in touch.

Can anyone remember the name of the garage which used to be at the end of Rowden Streetmany years ago? On the other side stood Ken Jones hairdresser next to the Ideal Billiard Hall run by Bill and Dennis Norbury (excellent ice-cream!). I learnt to play billiards here and, thanks to my mentors Fred Pickford and Les Lomax, became the North Wales champion at the tender age of 17 (where have the years gone?) beating Les Allsop in the final at Bagillt British Legion. I went on from there to compete in the B.L. snooker finals, Soho Square, London, along with Reg Windsor and accompanied by Trevelyn Roberts (reporter for the Advertiser). Wow what memories! Those of us that are left are all getting on a bit now, but think on age as only a number! To all those who know me I wish you good health and remember LIFE IS FOR LIVING. Take care N.B.

    Christina Gorman, Connah's Quay
Hi Hazel Kerr nee Beaton. Nice to hear from someone who remembers my dad and myself. I knew your mum well. Used to go for a drink with her. I know all your family but I can't remember you. When was the last time you came back to the Quay then? You would notice the change.

    Alan Roscoe, Pontblyddyn
To Malcom Milichap. I to was born in Mancot, and lived in Butler St. Remember you and your sisters well, dark nights jack show the light, kick the can, sitting in the 'midden' sailing paper boats down the drains, running from Fred Fulwood's alsatian. Nice to hear you're still going strong.

    Paul Molyneux, Shotton
Pat Lomax, did you have a relative called Rosie Hyndman? I know the surname and I'm sure I've heard of her in our family history somewhere, or maybe a school friend of my mam or dad?

    Hazel Kerr nee Beaton, Scotland
Hi Christina. I remember you as a little girl as I am Dora and Bill Beaton's daughter, now married and been in Scotland for over 40 years. I knew your dad very well and long before you moved to Hillside Avenue. He was a fantastic man, always whistling and singing.
    Wed Sep 10 08:56:26 2008

    A Roscoe, Pontblyddyn
Re Pam Hill MOLD, I well remember Fred Wison, foreman bricky in Summers, one of nature's gentlemen. I used to play double b flat bass next to Fred in the band. He used to sit there looking at a new score and make a whistling sound through his teeth, at which I would tell him to shut up, whereupon he would smash me in the shoulder with a hand like a shovel and say "if I can whistle it, I can play it". I got many a sore shoulder over the years, a great trooper.
To Derick Williams, Aus; I remember you from Fred's first venue, the 33club halfway up Shotton Lane, I remember Fred clipping your ear and telling you not to walk before you could run, I think he was scared of you stealing his limelight, you were pretty fit. I used to take Fred's shopping to his house in Shotton Lane when Roy was misssing, I was scared of his big white alsation, the small one wasn't so bad but the white one hated me. Fred tried for weeks to make me climb the ropes to the top of the 33club but I was too quick for him, later on when he was losing his sight he would squint at me in Wepre Drive and say "I'll get you up that rope yet" to which I'd reply, you haven't caught me yet.

Patricia Lomax, Shotton now St Andrews
Louise Thomas nee Hodson. Good to read your message. The Auntie Olga I knew would have been your grandmother. She and my grandmother (Emily Jane Lomax nee Hyndman) were sisters. I remember Tommy & Olga quite well and can see them clearly in my mind's eye. Tommy, quite a slight man, dark hair always wore a belted mac. He'd always nod hello to me. Auntie Olga was quite the matriarch. I was fascinated by the fact they kept chickens - thought it was really cool! Who had the ventriloquist's dummy? (I used to be scared of it.) I remember the girls but can only see Rosie. The boys I don't remember although I know their names. Your dad might remember me as Trish as I've always been called that. (There seems to be another Pat Lomax mentioned on this board.) Auntie Olga doted on her daughter Olga who was the youngest in the family. Olga and I were born in the same year. If you're interested, I've traced the Hyndman family back to Scotland! I'm not sure how to go about passing on my details. I thought I'd passed my contact details on to Mark (your cousin) some time ago but I didn't hear anything. What I'd really love is to see photos as I have none on my grandmother's side. Regards.

Hi to anyone who can remember me, and thanks to Peter Bennett cos I wouldn't have known about this site without you. Have contacted Keith now and have swapped e-mail addresses. Would also like to say hi to Pat Lomax, I was pals with your sister Helen, and I rememeber your mum when I used to go to your house with Helen. Glad to hear she married again.
Hi also to Steve Maybury, I was in class with Vicky and used to go horse riding each week with her and Keith Bennet, up to Northop. (I vaguely remember you when I used to call at the house.) Ask your dad does he remember taking me home from horse riding after having a fall and needing stitches in my head. I was very sorry and shocked to hear that Vicky had died.
I would love to hear from anyone who went to Aston secondary modern during 1964 - 1967. Can't believe I left school at 15 and went to work at Modo's. I'm nursing now at Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan.
They were good old days when I grew up in Clwyd Street. Going to the Civic on a Saturday afternoon (1962) and having a rave with the local bands, kids nowadays wouldn't believe what it was like back then. Ewloe Castle on a good Friday with my sister, Elma. Does anyone remember her? Would love to know...

My dad is Alan Roberts but everyone new him as Gail. My dad has dementia now and finds it hard to remember things. He is always talking about the lads he use to work with in the cold stripmill. I am his daughter and I worked there to in the canteen. We worked with a good set of girls, Barbara Daves, Susan Chare, Ann Roberts [she was the one with the red hair], Kath Tellet, Norren [my best freined]. My name was Christina Roberts dose any one remember any of these folks. My dad was a big fisherman on the Dee. We had a big family and we all had to do our turns of rowing the boat and pulling in the nets. Of course, my dad was supposed to be with us but everyone new he would be in the Quay House so the only time we seen him was when we pulled the nets in. He would be there to see how many salmon we caught and, best of all, he would take the credit for them. He paid us a pound. It was hard work but they were the days - the good old days. Where has that Deeside gone?

What a great site. We all have connections to Shotton and I guess many of us have moved away and yet we keep on coming back. Why I wonder? I have left several responses and not been able to reconnect with any of the guys I grew up with. Never mind. We're still a community that don't seem to be able to let go of the things that made us a community. I guess we're all stabbing in the dark and hoping to connect. Maybe we can, but most of the time, it seems that what was the way it was, is gone. Shotton was a place in time. I know it's still there. I know there are people living there lives there right now. It was my home forty years ago, now it belongs to another generation. I wish I could recapture the way it was. But the way it was is gone forever. I wish I could bring back all the places that we all remember and that gave dimension to our lives. But I can't. In my little tiny brain Shotton defined who I became. Yes in reality Shotton is a podunk town in the middle of nowhere but it created it me. I love the stupid little village trapped between Queensferry and Connah's Quay. I was born there. And I miss it every day.

Hi Nev Brierley. Maybe you can explain why I knew you as Harry but everyone called you Nev. Was your sister, Pat Brierley, and did you have a baby brother, David (I think)? My brothers are all gone now, Ken passed away when he was 49, Lawrence was 51 and Ernie died last year at the age of 80. As you say, there are not many of us left. I still have my 2 sisters, Joan and Maureen. Did you ever go to the back of Smiths Sweetshop? She used to put out the empty boxes there and you could always find some sweets amongst the empty boxes. I was wonderring if you lived in Windsor Avenue when the building to the right of your house went on fire. I don't remember if it was a garage or a shed or if it belonged to your family or the house next door to you.

    Steve Gorman, Connah's Quay
Can anyone give me any info on the marsh cottages in Sealand? My nana and grandad lived there. My dad was John Gorman. Anyone remember the family? I can remember the swings, sand pits, long dark lane going to the house. Then my dad moved to Jubilee St, Shotton. Can anyone remember Mona's shop at the bottom of the st, people asking about Fizzy the punk? He is still around - one man and his dog now. The place has changed a lot...

    Neville Brierley
Hi Irene Fellows, yes I did live opposite you in Windsor Avenue. I remember your brothers, Lawrence, Ernie and Kenny. I was big pals with Ken who joined boys army. Next to you was the Thomsons. Remember Smiths sweet shop, Wepre Woods was always good fun, kick the can running home before street lights went off, and getting a good hiding if you were late. Your Ken and me would ride the pigs across the brook to get to school. What memories, at afternoon pictures at Alhambra, FLASH GORDON, WOW! Mr Bennion was manager. Good days. Where is everyone now? Would be nice to hear from you and anyone else who remembers me. Take care Irene, not many of us left. Regards Neville Brierley.

She remembers you and your mum well, she said it was sad about your dad, she remembers the accident well. My nan Elsie also says to remember her to you too, it's weird when I got married 22 years ago my husband and I bought our first house in Salisbury Street no 6, so the memories go on again. Take care and love to your family, Joy, Margaret and Elsie.

Mum Iris, dad Sam, brothers Eddie and Dave, sisters Janet and Sandra (sadly my mum and sister Janet have passed away). I'm married to Gareth Jones of Engelfield Ave, Connahs Quay, he has a sister Wendy. We've had many fab holidays around the world but love to come home to Connahs Quay. Mark Robinson, Shotton
I've lived in Shotton all my life. Went to St Ethelwolds primary school on the high street in Shotton, then on to Deeside High. Contemplated leaving around 6 years ago but just couldn't do it, they say home is where the heart is and that's a fact in my case. I live on the estate and it may be a little run down of late but I'm proud of where I'm from and nothing will ever change that.

Hi Jean. Good to hear you are well. I too am keeping well the usual aches from our age group! I see you have caught me up age wise! Yes I remember my son going with you and Ray to watch an International at Wrexham. I have two sons and two grandsons. I'm still living in Shotton "unattached" but happy. Good to hear from you Jean, take care, Gary.

Louise Thomas nee Hodson, St Helens
Hi, does anyone remember my dad Ramon (Ray) Hodson from 79, Green Lane, Shotton, mum Olga & dad Tom or any of his other 7 brothers & sisters, Doreen, Tommy, Michael, Christopher, Rosie, Kathleen & Olga? Dad met & married my mum Barbara in Northwich, Cheshire, where they are still living at the moment before shortly moving to Spain. He used to hang round with Graham Walker( Walker Carpets) who he still sees on a regular basis. Dad has never forgotten his roots and the stories of the fun everyone had back in the day. On day trips to Shotton when I was a kid to visit family dad always took my grandad Tom to Shotton Lane Social Club who used to have a yearly family day out to Rhyl...god did we enjoy it & the 50p shop in Connah's Quay. I will always remember how friendly the people were in Shotton. Have just seen my cousin Mark Antrobus (Australia) son of Auntie Doreen (nee Hodson) & uncle Ivor has left messages on this page & a lady called Patricia Lomax (Shotton now St Andrews) mentioned in her message that she remembers Auntie Olga - would that be my grandmother or my dad's sister, and how are we related as I'm trying to find out about my family history? Grandad Tom Hodson (sadly passed away) used to work at John Summers Steel Works & worked there for about 40 yrs after moving to Shotton from Wolverhampton. Does anyone remember him? Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Jen, it's lovely to hear from someone who remembers my grandad. He moved to Rhyl police station where he was made inspector but sadly he died suddenly in May 1986, he had a huge heart attack without any warning. My nan Elsie is really well at the age of 93 and lives in Prestatyn, my uncle Dave is living in Prestatyn. My mum, Margaret, lives in Mancot. It's weird hearing from you in Australia, I was expecting local people to comment. He was a lovely person my grandad even though he was a good policeman. I would love to see the photo of you and Dave if that's possible, thank you so much for getting in touch.

Hiya Gary Cooper, remember you too from school, also remember taking your son to watch a footy game with Ray. Had a birthday last week, 68 now, my God, bus pass, member of the OAPs, etc. The old joints play up a bit and have to colour my hair now, but hey, still going strong. Hope you are keeping well. Good hearing from you.

In the 1950s I walked a girl from the Vaughn Hall dance Shotton to Queensferry, I think that I got one kiss. Ran back to see the train going over the bridge on its way to Wrexham. I noticed this push bike leaning against the gable of the house not far from the station. I jumped on and biked home. I left the bike in the police station yard with a note saying where it came from I hope the man had his bike back.

To Joy Gregory, Connah's Quay. I remember your grandad as I lived in Salisbury Street as a child. I also remember his son David Lloyd, in fact I have a photograph of him and me sitting on top of a dog kennel in our back yard. I later went on to serve with David in the police force in Llandudno. Is Sgt Lloyd still alive?

    Mary Williams (Nickson), Rhyl
My grandfather lived in Mold Road opposite Fewsters the printers. He was the local blacksmith and when he retired he bought a bungalow in Wepre Drive/Park. From the road it looked just like a small plot of land but you had to decend down 29 steps to reach the property which had a large orchard and the back garden was surrounded by Wepre Brook, so when he died and my grandmother came to live at our family home in Wepre Drive the bungalow was sold to Fred Fullwood, he said it was perfect as it had the privacy and the land for him and his wife to practise their act. I used to go down and watch him, he had erected a tightrope wire on the lawn, he never looked very athletic as he had a rather large middle, his wife was very muscular and very petite, she always seemed to be wearing a lot of chiffon scarves around her head, as they were such an unusual couple I will always remember them. Happy times.
    Thu Jul 17 10:57:40 2008

John Butler (JB) formerly of Shotton
Hello! I'm John Butler - raised in Plymouth St. / King George St. Shotton - and never moved very far since! I'm fascinated by the nicknames we gave to our chums in our youth. It's good to remember them - and speculate on the origins. Here are a few of the Shotton gang of my own acquaintance. They were all great characters: Onky (Ray) Allcock, Gladstone Street Emo (Emlyn) Hughes, Woodland Street Goggsie (Gordon) Hughes, Queensway Shotton Wumper (Brian) Thomas, son of Joe Thomas "The Island" Coal merchant Bonehead (Keith) Jones, son of "Spanish" Tom Jones, TGWU Shotton Slegger (Derek) White, King George Street Ebbo (David) Evans Plymouth Street. Maybe the good folks who contribute to this delightful website can add their own local favourites and make us smile again. One name that keeps popping up here is Fred Fullwood. A chum of mine, Roy, was his son. There was something exotic about all the Fullwoods, be it Roy's mean (to my pre-teen ears) self-taught piano-playing - or his most personable and very beautiful sister. We've heard in these columns Fred was a father-figure who inspired many a slothful Deesider to achievements in PT training and swimming. I can just remember Fred in his athletic heyday. He and his vivacious wife must have been sometime stage performers. Acrobats. From the vantage point of the "Butlers" public-address van I looked on each summer as they reprised their act as "Ramon & Rosita". This was an outdoor performance to wide-eyed audiences at the annual bank holiday fetes held in the grounds of the, now defunct, Wepre Hall (top of Wepre Drive). Fred was by now in his 50s and quite replete around the middle, clad in worsted wool trunks with his fellow artiste and life-partner in daring gypsy attire, the two would leapfrog and gyrate within a small arena. With the van loudspeakers blaring a crackly 78 version of, "Bolero", the act climaxed as, balancing his long-suffering other-half by her nether-regions, he proceeded to spin her at sick-making revolution on his outstretched hand. The crowd, many of whom had waited a year for this spectacle, would roar approval. Veterans of many a nocturnal skirmish in front of the Vaughan Hall Shotton and no strangers to visceral live-action, to man and boy, they knew what was coming next. Especially when Fred, flushed with adrenalin and Ideal ice-cream, with a triumphal grunt, heaved Rosita into the air. As the moment of this Herculean thrust dissipated, he would throw wide his arms like a preacher in ecstasy – and look in anticipation towards the crowd. It went wild. There was never as much as a whimper from his wife. Fred's attempt to catch the still-gyrating deadweight of a long past slip-of-a-girl, was spectacular if seldom successful. In later years we would remember it wistfully as "The Fall Of Rosita". Dragging herself upright, utterly disoriented but beaming and proud, you could hear the audience gasp. As applause broke out that could be heard from Mancot to Golfyn, "Rosita" clung to the glistening frame of the man she loved and most of Deeside worshipped. Her ample torso displayed, like a badge of honour, the latest glowing addition to the bruises and lesions of the weeks of practise that had culminated in that afternoon. But as the woods and lanes of those sunny days around Wepre rang with the shouts and playful screams of a generation yet to be blunted by the joys of ITV and "Coronation Street", we little suspected these moments of innocence and often eye-watering mirth would be cherished for the rest of our lives.

I lived in Green Lane in the '50s. After moving from Pentre, QF. Have you read the blog 'bombs in Pentre'? We were at no. 46, Jones on the right, Faye on the end of the 4 block, Hallows on the left end. We played most nights under the street light outside Morris's talking and telling tall stories, ball games, skipping, tallio over gardens, giving hell for the nightwatchman in the lower end of Cheverons Road. I recall learning radio tips from a Mr Roberts, a chap with a club foot who owned an auto cycle, a three wheel invalid car. He built his own TV from a radar unit. He was a hero of mine. The first proper TV I saw was owned by the Thomas family, no. 20, who took us kids in to see the Coronation. Recall the room had to be dark. We had a street party and I wired up a few loudspeakers for the music to dance to. I have a photo of this street party. Going to another subject, I recall Bill Speed. He was a keen football player. He was with Saltney jnrs and I went to see him play in some cup in Llandrindod Wells. He worked in the SSW, part of J Summers & Sons like me.

    Brian Bowden - Connah's Quay
Vince M'Keown - Canada. Hi Vince - You are right, I am the guy you wondered about. I am fit and well as is my brother, Chic, and sister, Margaret. Chic and Noreen are still in Vancouver, in the process of selling their home and returning to settle permanently in the Deeside area. Do you remember Dennis Clark and his sister Jessie from school? I had a long chat with Dennis last week. I hadn't seen him in 60 years. He was on a three week visit from Australia, staying with Jessie's daughter. Jessie sadly died a good few years ago. It was luck that I saw your message as I hadn't visited the site for several months. I think you have Chic's phone number, give him a ring for an update on his latest news.

    Mr L Archer
Reading all these comments about growing up in and around Shotton brings back some brilliant memories from my own childhood. Although I grew up in the eighties, it doesn't seem to matter what era you were born, we all seem to have the same fond memories of doing the same things - fishing in the Rosie, climbing Ewloe castle and playing in Wepre woods. Unfortunately, Deeside is not the place it once was.

Message for Whitmore - I still live in Shotton, and the houses in Health Street are mainly terraced. There are not many left any more although the ones that are there have been there long before I was born in the '70s. I often walk my dog around that area, so let me know if you need any other info.

    Andy - Scotland
What a blast from the past. I grew up in Shotton during the '60s and '70s. Some memories... Queensferry CP, first teachers were Mrs Northcott and Mrs Griffiths. Didn't appreciate what a wonderful little school it was. Christmas party every year with Mr Turley as Santa. Playing football, usually FA cup or World Cup knockout at breaktimes until the bell was rung and then still playing on - everyone wanting to be Pele or Jairzinho. The long summers (and they were longer and sunnier), playing on the fields behind Westminster Crescent (remember the scary brick building at the top corner before at was demolished), jumping off the swings to see who could jump furthest (Ugas broke his leg), The long summer of '76 being chased off the field by swarms off ladybirds, fishing off the Steelworks side of the river at full tide after watching the bore come down the river, also remember playing in the pill boxes and walking down the lane between BRS and the Leisure Centre and through the field full of cowpats to get there! Playing in the streets between the cars, tick, hide & seek & kerbsy until it was dark. Going to the shops in Shotton Lane for sweets and Tizer, the first or second shop or the Plaintree garage on the Chester Road. Ice cream vans, the pop van (keeping the bottles to get the money back), the butchers van and the rag & bone man. No B&Q in those days, there was a George Henry Wrights builder merchant where it is today or Beavans in Connah's Quay if you needed something. Going for family walks on a Sunday along the wet lanes and up to Ewloe Castle, we seemed to walk for miles. Also, remember the crashed bomber in the Gorse Woods although the story I heard was it was British, and a splendid monkey puzzle tree on the way there.

This is for Kay Ellsum of Queensland. I live by your aunty, Sylvia, we are friends as well as cousins. I also went to school with Ruth Dolman and remember your mum and my cousin, Eddie, emigrating. We were in 2nd form at Hawarden Grammar, I think. My 2 sisters and brother live in Queensland. Margaret in Pine Creek, and Avril in Shailer Park, near Brisbane, and Stephen in Gin Gin. Amanda Hett on this page is also a cousin of yours.

I am trying to trace the Knowles family history. James Ernest Knowles was the Bookeeper/Accountant at the Shotton works he married a Ceridawen Edwards. Her father was Daniel Edwards who I think had a brickworks or was a builder he died on Aston Hill I think in 1932. Does anyone have any information about the Edwards family please?

    Phil Higgins -Shotton
I have lived in Shotton all my life. I went to Queensferry CP till '93 - it was knocked down a year later and what a great school - that was should have been listed. Compared to the piles of crap what are rottin' away today, I am all for local landmarks but for god's sake spend some money and do something with them.
I have just read Mr Bennett's statement of Green Lane, saying about how he used to play tic and all the rest of those games you play when you're kids. And that's what we were like as we never had money so we'd only need a football to keep us happy or go and build a den. And that's what it was always about - going on adventures on a Sunday up Wepre or down the river - it was ace.

Hi Les Ellsum! Apparently my grandfather was William Ellsum who was a butcher in Flint. I don't know much about the Ellsums and was wanting to find out a bit of history. My dad is Edward/Malcolm Ellsum and my mother is Joan Dolman of Connah's Quay. If there is anyone from Connah's Quay who knew my mother's family I would love to hear from you.

Born in 1943 at the Catherine Gladstone maternity home in Mancot and lived in Pentry. I went to the Deeside Sec Mod (Central School in Shotton) leaving with my GCSEs in 1958. I was in England/Wales for Easter this year. Heard very briefly about a reunion for my class this summer, but have no details at all. Two of my best pals were Beryl Wainwright (Sandycroft) and Hillary Martin (Mancot). I went to London 1962-64 and from London May 1964 to Finland. After 20 yrs I moved to France with my husband and four children. The past 20 yrs we have lived in Stockholm. Anyone who knows anything about this 50th reunion, please let me know. Greetings to you all from a beautiful and sunny Stockholm.

    Cedric Bryant, Canberra, Australia
Firstly, I was staggered by the amount of information on this site. My wife and I have lived in Canberra, Australia, for over 50 years. My mother, Catherine, was the daughter of Sidney John and Mary Agnes [ne. Rowandson] Jolley. We knew nothing about my mother from the time she was born in 1905 until she married my father, William George Bryant in Hertfordshire in 1934. Mother's sister Letitia, born in 1902 married Albert Jones in 1921. Uncle Ab as he was known worked I think all his life at John Summers Steelworks. They had a daughter Marjorie. I lost track of my Auntie Tish, as she was known many years ago. We would be very interested in info on Albert Jones and also their daughter Marjorie. They lived in Shotton and I remember visiting them often and going on a tour of the steelworks.

Hello Paul [Doc] and Jen. What a nice surprise to see your names pop up and many other old friends some gone BUT never forgotten. As Pete mentioned many, many happy memories. Carters chippy, I would gladly pay a tenner for a plate of their fish 'n' chips. If by any chance there are any elderly people reading this and may [by accident] had their windows broken during the '60s and '70s it was not me. Yes, Billy Seaman did move to America. Vic now lives in London, Brian [yeti] lives in Ireland and me, well at the present moment am living in lalaland.

This is for Gwenda Owens. Yes, I do remember you and your family. My father used to play cricket with Eddie in Shotton Lane. My mum was Betty. We lived in Chester Close from 1962 until 1967 then moved to Buckley. My grandparents lived in Caernarvon Close from 1932 until 1984. I believe that Geoff Dodd (father) still lives in Queensway. I remember Deryn, Eddie's daughter as well.

Interesting site; found by accident. Good to read all the different memories. Hello to all who know me...especially Tommy Hewitt and Brian Buckley. I also remember Malcom. I lived in Terrig Street from about 64 to 67. I have fond memories of all the many friends made that have now moved on to the four corners of the globe, and fond memories of Queensferry primary school, Hawarden High, Deeside High School, Jokers night club: at the leisure centre, The Hawarden Suite, Whiteheads cafe, the many shops in Queensferry and Shotton and the general life and buzz of the area. Unfortunately reading some of the other comments on this page they highlight how much the fortune and wealth of the area has changed since the passing of the steelworks and the arrival of the Asda superstore. We need more investment in the area.

I was born in 1939 at my grand-parents' home, 6, Ratcliffe Row, Pentre, Queensferry. My grandfather was named Alfred SNEAD and my Nanna was Eleanor SNEAD, nee JONES. My grandfather worked as a furnace-man at Shotton Steelworks in Shotton. He died in 1946, my Nanna having died in 1942. My mother was named Sarah (nee SNEAD) she died in Cheshire in 1993. Does anyone know of if there is an archive of former workers at Sotton Steelworks, or anyone alive who knew the family?

I found this site by accident, but was so pleased I have. I have lived in Woodland Street since 1953 but for the first 6 years of my life I lived in the sweetshop next to the Hippodrome cinema in Connah's Quay with my mum and dad and my brothers Richard Gwynne and Eddie Owens, who you may remember played cricket for Shotton and for a little while for Connah's Quay. I am pleased to say that they are still alive and kicking. Eddie, 77 years, Gwynne, 74 years, and Richard, 65, and myself the baby at 61. Somebody was asking the name of the manager of the Hippodrome in Connah's Quay in 1946. My brother informs me it was Arthur Davies, and the man who kept the kids in order was called Dick the Hip. On the deeds of our house which was built in 1895 it says Thorn Cottage next to nine houses and windy harbour. The only people left in Woodlands Street from the 1950s is Mrs Hughes who had a son, John, and Mr Coppack and myself. I can remember the Biggs family at no 14 and I think after they left the house was rented out to American Air Force families from Sealand. I remember going to the house and it was the first time I saw popcorn being popped from a pan. I am still working in Owens Travel Shotton and we have been here since 1953. Many of you will remember it being Stokes pen shop, and then my parents started selling birthday cards and fancy goods, finishing off as a travel agents. I would love to hear from anybody who can remember our family.

Pete Bennett. Nice to hear from you. What memories, and what times we had. The best thing in those days was you knew if you walked through the Quay and Shotton you would always meet someone you'd know. The last time I drove through there I didn't remember the buildings never mind the people. Sorry about Harry Parry, although I didn't know him very well. If you see Glenn again please let him know where we are. I heard that Allan Halliwell had died recently and I suppose a few others have sadly passed on. We are the old ones now. Yes, the last time I heard, Billy Seaman was in America. Anway nice to hear from you it has brought back some great memories and hope to hear from you soon.

    Brian Bowden - Connah's Quay.
Ref. James Frederick Michael Hartley. Regarding your message of 16th Aug. 2006. You must be the same Mike Hartley I remember at Hawarden Grammar School but Mike, you are way out with your dates. At the start of the September term of 1948 you were in Form 4Sc. which was an all boys class, together with Sid Lloyd (now dead), Lindsay Dale, John Weir, Herbie Cockroft and other forgotten names. I was next door in Form 4L, which was a mixed boys/girls class, along with Peter Jones (Snez), Anthony Butler, Gwyn Owens, Cliff Griffiths, Selwyn Jones, John Heber Davies maybe a few others and some of the girls I remember were Mary Jones and her sister, Euphemia (Effie), Anne Humphreys and Norma Hughes (now dead). I recall you had a racing bike with the turn-down handlebars which you rode to and from school via Aston Hall Lane. One day you turned up for a gym lesson with a pair of brief gold-coloured shorts which your father had brought you from the U.S.A. Fred Foulkes said they were proper gym shorts, which showed up the rest of the class with our navy blue or white football shorts which almost reached to our knees. I can't believe the things that stick in ones mind after so many years!

In reply to Marta Wilson (Altrincham), I remember your grandparents I lived around the corner in High Street in Hamiltons Greengrocers. My mother and your Aunty Dorothy were the best of friends for many years. I can remember Dorothy marrying Fred Chambers and having 2 sons Michael and Christopher. They later moved to Sutton Coalfield. Your grandparents also had 2 sons Teddy and I think the other one was Gordon. Your grandfather always had a little dog with him who I think was called Monarch he was a wire haired fox terrier, your grandad was a man of habit, every day he would walk to Shotton Conservative Club with his paper under his arm. He was always turned out well, and I believe he owned all the houses in Spring Street and this was his income - not bad for the 1930-40s. Hope you find this correct, if you wish to contact me maybe the webmaster will give you my email address.

    Graham Bennett from Shotton
Stokes the the sweet shop was right opposite Jubilee St, and the cobblers next to it was Hawkes not Hawkers. Then there was the XL Coy a rather upmarket men's clothiers and then the TSB saving bank. Next to that was the men's hairdressers Ken Jones. I think, if I am correct, Ken Jones also had a shop by the Ideal Billiards hall. I used to live in Eleanor Terrace at top of Jubilee St and can remember nearly all the names that appear on this site, Roger Biggs, I went to school with, Fred Forrester, Billy Tyrel, Robbie Taylor all names that bring memories of good old days.

Billy Speed not Barrie, Ann Speed's brother. I went out with Rosina Conlon who lived at Spring St, C/Q. Ann Speed was Rosina's best friend. Ann lives at Deans Place, C/Q. Not seen them for years. Most of my family still live in Shotton & lots of friends. Billy played for C/Q Nomads.

My mum is 70 in June. I am trying to make her an album of her life. Her name is Ina Charlton. She was born Ina Jones in 1938 and lived in Desside most of her life. She married Harvey Bell in about 1950. She later divorced and re-married. Her and her cousin Pat Cartwright have been inseperable for most of their lives. Does anyone have any memories of her/them or pictures to include in her album? I would be very grateful.

Paul and Jen, what a nice surprise to see your name on here and it started off so many memories...the scooter crowd, reevies cafe, carters chippy, civic, labour club, youth club and the central, places where we would all meet up on the scooters. Still see people from those days and chat about how they were. Mickey and Elaine Pearson have moved to Spain, Glenn I saw a while ago sadly at Harry's (Glen's brother) funeral, Billy Seaman - last I heard was in America... the memories, the times we all shared and the friends we made I hold with great affection. I don't know if we are allowed to put our email address on here but try to stay in contact - it would be nice to hear from you.

Lived at the top of Plymouth Street in the early 1950s. Many happy memories of playing around the "bluey" and the swings (now got old age pensioners bungalows on that area, with the new swings etc. behind them). Nice to see some of my family members mentioned, e.g. Raymond Forrester, my cousin but a lot older than me and also old neighbours, Roger Biggs (how's Helen?) and Stuart Walton. Does anyone remember my brother Roy Forrester? And my uncle, Arthur Coppack (now 96), still living in the Woodlands.

Peter Lewis, Alltami ex Connah's Quay
I was born at 59 High St, Connah's Quay, and have just found this site, boy how the names and the memories come flooding back. The first one was Derrick Williams ex Brook Rd. I remember the Williams family father Tom, brother Barry, and I think they had a uncle Reg who drove a dust cart for the Quay council. Derrick might remember me as the lad who kept rabbits on Alf Parry’s island. Then up popped Terry Skilbeck, did he have a brother Ken? Then came another blast from the past, Mary Nickson who lived in Wepre Drive. I hope they are all keeping well? To carry on as to who I am I went to Dee Rd Infants. Miss Hughes was headmistress and Miss Pepper and Miss Mclean, then Shotton council for a couple of years at a Chester school Holly Bank after that I went to Shotton Central. I think Fred Roberts was head master and John Lloyd Williams was deputy. After school I worked on the farms delivering for Johnny Williams Wepre Farm, also Charlie Dodd Mill Farm and Lloyds Red Hall Farm. I also worked for Danny Pierce Broak Farm, who by the way also owned the Milk Bar under the bridge by Shotton Railway. I left Pierces to join the army, while I was in the army my family moved to Saughall nr Chester. I never came back to live in the Quay but I can still remember most of the names of the shops in the Quay during the 1940s. I had 3 brothers you might remember Mike, John and Tom. Hoping to hear from some old friends.

Do you remember my parents Mattie Keaney(from Galway Southern Ireland) and Sheila(nee King)? Mum was born and brought up close to Shotton. Sadly she lost most of her family in 1954 when she was 14 yrs old. We lived in Nelson Street until approx 1963/4 then moved to Bolton, Lancashire. We being Mum/Dad, me(I was born 1960 so would have been 3/4yrs old)my brother David and sister Mary.My youngest sister Margaret and youngest brother Terence were born in Bolton. Sadly we lost Dad in 1995 and Mum in 2000. I would dearly love to hear from anyone who knew my parents, or who went to school or worked with Mum.

For Amanda Bett: your grandmother Hilda Hett was my dad's sister and as a child I spent a lot of time in her house as we only lived next door where doctor Gavin had his surgery. One day doctor Gavin needed to stitch someone's hand and came through the adjoining door to ask mum for some cotton.

Dad was Cyril, mum Louisa, Geoff, Keith brothers and Lilian sister born in Green Lane, going to St Ethelwolds, then Queensferry CP then on to Aston Secondary Modern, making friends for life there. Green Lane was a great place to be brought up in, playing football in the street, cricket with the dustbin lid as the wickets, tic, hide 'n' seek. Trips to Castle Hill woods on a Good Fri with picnic and pop never remember it raining, sunny days in summer holiday, happy days, seemed to spend a lot of time in wet lanes or the blue hole fishing, not a care in the world, time just went by when you are that young you never did. Other families in Green Lane were The Buchans, Glen Parry H, Sue, Les. Mr and Mrs Pearson, Mike Dave, Mr and Mrs Medley and the girls, Willie Roberts, John Cruse, Hodsons, Kev Jones, Ron Davis, Dickie Hallows, Kenny Trevors, Brian Jones, the Royale twins in Chevrons Road, Barry Williams, Vic Sheriffs, Willie Roberts, the names are endless. Highs grocery shop where we had a book during the week where we paid for things on pay day, going next door for a shilling for the light, borrowing a cup of sugar. Dad ran a football team called Shotton Lane Youth with Mr Gratton the sports teacher from Aston Secondary. The time it was running they won near on everything, at the time there was no changing rooms at the 33 club or wherever we could play and many a time the players got changed in our house, one in kitchen, one in outhouse with mum doing the washing and drying in her twin tub. Like so many people on here who have fond memeories of growing up in Shotton Green Lane, North Street, Chevrons Road, Westminster Cresent, Clwyd Street, Terrig Street areas, although I have not moved far, my heart is still Green Lane, Shotton.

Well, what a lot of memories here. I can remember Pat Lomax and John Guest. I've met up with an old friend last year, Martin Ellis who I have not seen for about 30 years. I used to go to Aston SM. I was in Shotton last week and it still looks the same as I remember it, just a bit busier traffic wise. I have a brother, Dennis, and sister, Marina, if anyone remembers them. I'll look forward to maybe hearing from a few old friends here. Bye for now, take care all.

Memories of growing up in Shotton. Too many to recall on here, lived in Green Lane until I joined the army in 1972. Remember the Alambra cinema on a Saturday morning (the thruppenny rush). All of us kids coming out slapping our thighs as if on horses firing imaginary guns at each other. Yep, it was the Saturday western. Sundays we used to go down to the river, play at soldiers in the old pill box on the river bank, fighting off the enemy across the river, venturing into the murky water with our trousers rolled up to the knees. We explored the old railway bridge, scared to death as the trains went over it, jumping the gaps in the walkway - scared in case we fell off into the water below. We used to fish with our throwout lines from the jetty, never did catch anything though but enjoyed ourselves anyway. Great memories of the youth club at the back of the church in Shotton Lane, Keith Butler's dad used to run it, we had our own group called Woody and the Woodpeckers and would perform for the rest of the kids there. What a group, wooden guitars we made ourselves (no strings) potato tubs as drums, (our kids don't believe us), no music - just us singing, pretending to play our homemade instruments. They were great times.

    Cliff Norry, Deeside
I remember the marsh cottages, my grandmother lived there, she was the local midwife, Mrs Norry, and my uncle Tom (Mick) lived next door. I used to visit as a child during the 2nd world war.

    Marta Wilson (nee Blane), Altrincham
I am doing some research on my family history and have come up with some wonderful stories. My grandparents were William and Marta Blane of Brookfield, Wepre Drive (next door to Dr Gavin). My aunty Kitty (McMullan) lived next door and my great grandfather, also called William Blane, built the houses. I have just been given a newspaper article on the wedding of Aunty Kitty and it seemed to be a society wedding with Wepre Drive decked out in buntings and all the ships flying their colours as she married a sea captain. Going back it seemed that great grandad Blane had a shop at 290 High Street called E Blane & Son, and my great grandad on Nanna's side was the mining manager at Eleanor Colliery before going to Chile (where Nanna was born) to work. I have really fond memories of Wepre Drive when I was small, especially the cows in the field opposite the house (now the Civic Centre) and Nanna taking us to Woolworths to buy something with our spends. Good old Connahs Quay.

    Lynn Murphy, Connah's Quay
Hi Lesley Pritchard from 1 York Road, Connah's Quay, remember me? We all used to be friends together, when I was little I lived in Hilbre Rd, and we used to play with Michelle Cooper at her nan's house in Kent Road. My nan used to live at number 6 Kent Rd, she was Violet Butler, mother to May, Grace and Hetty, I was one of Hetty's kids, the youngest, the others were Yvonne, Jack and Susan, Sue was a great friend of Karen Bagby from Kent Road. I am so pleased I have found this site, now I know it's here I will talk to you some more.

What a great site. I am researching our family history and believe my great grandmother's family - her name was Lillie Picton - were farmers in Shotton in the late 1800s.

Sue Braithwaite (nee Corbett), Auckland, NZ
What wonderful memories of Shotton! I was born in 1955 in Kirby Grove and later moved to Westminster Crescent. I went to St Ethelwolds School, the headmaster Mr Crossley used to hang the flags out from the flagpole every Trafalger Day. Unfortunately the school no longer exists. I remember dancing around the maypole every May Day, a tradition that is sorely lost. I went to Aston then it changed into Deeside Senior High. Who remembers the Vasa, Mr Gratton, Ma Loo and KB? I was home in September 2007 and we held a school reunion in the Stags Head in Ewloe, it was great fun to see Dawn Markey, Doug Clayton, Lynn Russell, Sue Fearon, Cath Logan and Sue Williams again. We plan to do it again in September 2008. Please, if you are interested in attending, let me know.

    Derek Roy Griffiths
Hi, I was born in 1937 at Davies Cottages, Pentre, Queensferry, now gone and new homes biult on the site. I went to Garden City Junior School and on to Deeside Modern Secondary, til I left to work as a slinger in the SSW bay of John Summers and Sons who sent me on a outward bound caurse in the Lake District. From my national servive I did active service in 1956-58 in Cyprus. After I got demobbed I went back to Summers but left when I got married and came to live in Widnes where I did a few jobs, never could settle after the army. Now retired and live alone with my sons 5 akita dogs. Would be nice to hear from old friends, I recall Fred Fullwood and his beautiful wife and balancing partner. He lived in Shotton Lane next door to the green grocers shop which was joined to a sweet general shop on the right as you go up the lane nearly opposite an old thatched cottage on the left. Fred looked after the waste paper stowage place next to it. He had a hanger which he used to have a club of some kind, he did a lot of weight lifting and body building there. This place was higher up the lane near some waste land, he was a great guy. Hazeldines chippy, now there's a memory...they should make a recipe sheet and give it to all these new chippies telling them how to do the job. I recall playing Batman and Robin and dressing up with masks etc in a wooden shed at the back of the chippy which opened onto a path-shortcut, with your dad and a mate we called Shiver, wonder if he remembers? I also recall Roy Griffiths, he and his family lived like me in Green Lane, he was round the corner nearer Cheverons Road. I was at 46. It was near him lived Ivor Lloyd (Shiver). Roy do you recall we called you Baby, I was called Derago, we had lots of fun. I think quite a lot about them days as I'm 70 years old now but still active.

The list goes on, happy days at shotton youth club, the Quay baths, Wepre Park, the leisure centre. So many good memories of Shotton

Shotton memories? The day Woolworths opened (about 1958?) and half the lads on Deeside turned shoplifters overnight to sate their cravings for Airfix model 'planes! Returning the next week for a kit of paints to embellish their delinquencies. The old factory by the river (in the 'Quay, not Shotton) was known as "the Silica". Remember when the annual fair used to set up in the field where the ice rink now sits? The week before Chester Races in May. A circus used to set up in the same field annuallly too. When the huge tar tank at Graesser's Salicylates went up in smoke around 1957 or so? Our "gang" hiked from the 'Quay to Queensferry to watch it. The plume of smoke was reputedly visible from Liverpool. Walks up Shotton Lane to "Gorse Wood" where the remains of (we all believed) a WWII German bomber lay? The sheer fascination of those containers for cash and change flying along the wires across the ceiling of the old Co-op near St Ethelwoods Church and the old Veterans who sat on the seat outside reminiscing about the Great War... Alf Jones (The Star) was about the ONLY place to get jeans at that time. Necessary garb for going to "the Crystal" (used to be the Vaughan Hall) for teenage dances on Saturday afternoons. If your "luck" was in, you might even have made a date to meet Miss Shotton at the Alhambra later - if Georgie the manager didn't nominate you as the root cause of noisy disturbances and throw you out first!

    Garry Neale, Cambridge
My dad, George Neale, had the shoe repair shop on Connah's Quay High Street next door to The Ship. I was born in '51 and lived behind the shop, which my dad kept on until 1979. My earliest memories include the sweet shop across the road which later became a cafe, the local grocers (Tegg's?), the grain store a few doors away, and playing with the boy whose parents ran the Ship (Keith Atherton, I think). Other early childhood friends included John Wynn, Graham Parry, Stuart Wilson, Brent Wright. What was the closed-down factory near the river? It was so exciting (and risky!) to climb the rickety wooden staircases and explore the gloomy old building. We moved to Sandycroft in 1960 but I regularly visited Connah's Quay and Shotton. I recognise much of what has been written in this forum, but I don't think I've seen any mention of local fishing haunts: Rennies pit, the Rosie up Wepre drive, and a pond in Shotton which I think was up Rycroft (Ryland?) Street. An earlier posting from Dan mentioned Ralph Carr. Would that be the brother of Geraldine - a girlfriend of mine from many moons ago! In the late sixties, their parents moved to Buckley to run the Bluebell Pub.

Reply to Mark Antrobus-Woolagong & Mike Millington-Shotton, I was also born in Green Lane, Shotton, in April 1945 and was delivered by Dr Gavin, so I presume you must be referring to one of his sons Liam or Michael. The Hodson family were living in Green Lane in my time & one of the daughters Daphne was a close friend of one of my sisters and were still living there when we moved to Aston Rd. around 1958

    Keith Littlemore from Adelaide, Australia
I grew up in shotton. I lived in Salisbury treet till 1980. My two other brothers used to play on the swings in aAlexandra Street and who remembers on the school summer holidays when we had games on the playing fields and then go to the swimming baths in the afternoon - this was about 1978ish? Who remembers playing in the barns at the bottom of Salisbury Street and where there was supposed to be a bottomless pit behind Bridge Street? Before coming to Australia I went around the old places. We used to go the cinema in Queensferry for Sat matinee films and go to Whittles sweet shop next door then walk home. I remember the swings where the new ice rink has been built on where, for a limited time, Radio Deeside was a temp radio station. My brothers used to go Connah's Quay baths a lot which cost 10p then for kids. And in the changing rooms, who remembers the hanging baskets where you put your clothes in and the attendants would hang them up and put them on the wet floor? Loads of memories and glad I found the history of Shotton.

I've lived in Shotton and Connah's Quay all my life - I'm 25. I used to love playing in Wepre Park and going to the art project in Wepre Park Visitors' Centre in the summer hols. Unfortunately, I feel Connah's Quay has gone down hill. I miss the old shops, Kwik Save, and Shoe Fare. I feel they should bring back Shotton market as I have fond memories of it as a child.

Chris Penfold (Butler) Pett, East Sussex
I grew up in King George Street, Shotton. Went to Shotton Council School and H.G.S. Shotton was a good place to be a child. We had a lot of freedom and plenty of countryside at the top of the street. Shotton at that time was a very busy local shopping centre, you could buy most things there. As a small child I remember taking the grocery order to Woodfines in Brook Road. It was then delivered on a Friday by bike. Does anyone know why Good Friday is the day for going to Castle Hill woods?

    Mike Millington, Shotton
Replying to Mark Antrobus, Wollongong, Australia. I was born in Green Lane, Shotton, in 1963. I remember the family Hodson there. My mum Lesley Millington nee Parry does know your mum & she has just said that she used to keep in contact with Doreen & did so when your dad passed on. She has also said she lost your mum's details & would you please send them to me so I could pass them on [leave details with webteam]. PS. Mum reckons she was Dr Gavin's 1st baby, so let's get them chatting again so they can at least sort out who was Dr Gavin's 1st baby for sure as she was also born in Green Lane. It's great reading about people who come from Shotton & surrounding areas who have moved on to far & wide places.

    Graham Bennett from Shotton
I used to live in Eleanor Terrace at the top of Jubilee Street, and lots of the names bring back lots of memories. I remember Robbie Taylor well and your brother, also Eddie Newton from the Central Hotel. I went to school with Jakie Crofts from Alexander Street, I was also friendly with her brother John. Roger Biggs was also another name I recall. I went to school with Roger but then as we all grow everyone moves away. Looking at some of the replies it seems nearly everyone moved all over the world to live. I myself have worked abroad for over 30 years but still live in Flint with my family.

Stuart Meighan from San Francisco, California
My mum (Nan Henderson) grew up in Shotton, with her sisters Margret and Willow, and her brother Alex. Her dad was Bill Henderson (Hendy) who owned the Castle Inn, a pub, which I believe was in Chester. Her mum was Martha (maiden name Brown). I visited Shotton when I was a wee lad in the '60s. It was such a small village that people would stop me on the street and say "You must be Nan Henderson's boy". I hope to visit one day. Like so many, all in my family moved away...USA, Australia, Canada. It's easy to long for an earlier time when we would all be together.

Nev (Harry) Brierley, South West France
Born 1932 Ash Grove, Shotton and attended St Ethelwolds followed by the Central schools. Spent my formative years playing snooker at "Ikes" Ideal snooker hall, spent many a Sunday morning ironing and brushing tables. Shotton Institute (opposite the Vaughn Hall, now the Crystal) was also a venue for budding snooker players, anybody remember playing there? Hendys, Brook Rd, was the first pub I think everyone went to at that time (I remember feeling drunk after 1 black and tan!) then on to Vaughn Hall (owned by Vic Marland if memory serves me right). So many good memories of friends and workmates, how many of us are still around? Who of that era can forget Ron Lloyd and his Rolls-Royce, we would go to New Brighton Ballroom or Locarno Liverpool. You still around Ron? Vern Pugh, Al Freath, George Molyneaux, Miffi, Glyn Thomas, Windsor, Tutti, Clacker and Eddie Thomas (bless him) so many names and so many memories. To all those that have shared my life up to now thank you for the good times we had and remember even at our age "life is for living".

I have a photo of 1949-1950 football team, Mr Roberts, head master, Mr Webster, Mr Crossley. It might be of some interest to other threads, in photo Eddie Hett, Leslie Ellsum, Barry Williams (18) in all, behind the Hotel on a Wednesday Mr Stodard VET use to hold a surgery. Sunday night was the monkey walk, we all used walk up and down Shotton.

    Malcolm Millichap, Stafford
    B. 21/10/1940 Gladstone maternity home, Mancot and lived in Butler St off Shotton Lane for the next 17 yrs with my parents, Kathleen (nee Jones) and Thomas George and 2 sisters, June and Paula. Paula and family spent time in Balarat, Australia, but now both sisters live in North Wales. I recall a major event at Shotton CP when someone cut down the Christmas tree at the rear of the school. The culprit was never found but it made page one! We used to run out of school at 3.30pm to leap onto the fence and look towards the LMS railway line in the hope of seeing the afternoon mail train to Holyhead pass by. With luck someone would be along side the track to advise what it was and we could update our "Ian Allen" train spotters book. 9 times out of 10 it was the "Shielder Old Contemptables". As the lone male in the house it was compulsory for me to join Shotton church choir under Mr Salter and I hated every minute. I was 16 yrs old before I broke free. I managed to pass 11 plus and took the 3d. bus ride to Hawarden, where my cousins Barry Jones (my hero - he still is) and Melvyn Lloyd studied. Melvyn died suddenly from a heart attack some years ago at Northampton. I once delivered newspapers for Whittles of Queensferry and on Saturday put up groceries at the Maypole (was it called that?) at the bottom of Wepre Drive, delivering to Connahs Quay. Seasonally some of us went to Bees Nursery at Sealand and picked all manner of veg for very little.

Lesley/Peta - How lovely to find you at this time. Lesley I remember that you me and Violet Kirkham used to get together after school and I also remember your mum with her Scottish accent! Peta - the last time I saw you was when you visited Portland and I was in the Wrens at the time and you were in 'full army gear' on an exercise! My mum organised a surprise 40th birthday party for me... 7 years ago! She managed to get Joy Massey, Michael Williams, Graham Kelsall, Michelle Cooper, Stephen Davies, Michael Potts, Ann Mcleod to attend what a surprise. Hope to hear from you. Perhaps a 50th reunion is on the cards. Lesley I remember that your birthday was in March and mine February.

    Re James Harltey
We must have been contempories at Hawarden Grammar (1944-51), but somehow the name is not familiar. A few more teachers to remind you. Dick Francis, who taught Latin. Lawson and Ma Rowlands who were senior teachers on the Arts side (like JS and Doc for Science). Anybody else remember Happy Harry Hindley? He came out of retirement during the war to help out and taught Maths. At one stage our form room was what was later the metalwork shop just beyond the Gym. Harry was a stout little man who wore a venerable suit (probably 1920s vintage) but always made a point of bending from the waist rather than bending his knees. One day a boy brought a piece of cloth to class, and when Harry bent over to retrive a piece of chalk, he tore the cloth a little. Harry paused briefly then continued to bend. The cloth was then torn all the way through. Harry shot upright, completed the lesson with his back to the blackboard, and then disappeared accross the playgound at some speed with both hands clasped to his rear! Amazingly nothing further was said, but Harry used to let bits of chalk lie on the floor.

James Frederick Michael Hartley. You must have spent too much time in the bike shed if you were twenty when you left the grammar school!
    Fri Aug 24 09:39:50 2007

    James Fredrick Michael Hartley
Hi Terry Skillbeck. Maths was always my worst subject, probably due to the ministrations of Harry James (remember him?). I left in 1953 (Did we "graduate"?) age twenty, having spent my formative years at St Asaph Grammar, where one of my fellow pupils was Adrian Henry, one of the Liverpool Poets who went on to teach art to John Lennon.

Apparently I was at Hawarden G.S. at the same time as Mr Hartley. I remember Celia Hewitt but according to Mr Hartley's memory he was twenty when he first attended and twenty three when he graduated.
    Mon Aug 20 11:18:24 2007

    James Fredrick Michael Hartley
Born in Flint in 1933, moved to Mancot in 1952, attended Hawarden GS 1953 to 1956. At Hawarden GS the Chemistry mistress was Margaret Lumb, the male PT master was (flash) Fred Foulkes, physics was taught by J.S. Williams, Woodwork was taught by Mr Hewitt, who, incidentally had a beautiful daughter who went on to be a film star - see her slapping John Mills' face in "Dunkirk" - all this lot and many more were managed by Ben Jones, a south Walian, who sadly, stopped rugby from being played due to an on-field accident. I remember with some fondness the operas we put on, Carmen I will not forget in a hurry. Also, the Christmas concert parties, when one spectacular act was performed by twin brothers named, I think, Eyeball, who did an escapology trick. Yes, we did have extensive bikesheds, where various nefarious activities took place, but sorry to say, I never persuaded Celia Hewitt to join me there. The faces and events flood back as I write, but sadly, not the names. Can anyone out there fill in the gaps for me?

To Lesley Pritchard, I do remember you from Connahs Quay. I believe we were at school together, with Joy Massey, Sue Irvine, to name a few! I recall you entered nursing for a while after school. I completed school in Deeside and live permanently overseas now. I am in touch with Michael (Williams) who lives in Wepre Lane, though have lost touch with most others.

Amanda Hett - I remember a Phillip Hett at Hawarden High School in about 1980ish, bit of a handful in the science lessons...something to do with putting worms up taps. A friend of Geoff Amos (now sadly deceased I hear) - could this be your Dad? I always wondered what happened to Horace & Dorris Salter, my piano teachers when I was a wee kid. Good luck with your search for more info on your family.

I am only 26 but have loved reading everything you have all written! I've lived in Connah's Quay all my life and love it here, even though it has changed a lot in the recent years. I remember so many of the old buildings from when I was little. Sounds like everyone who has lived around this area have all got up to pretty much the same things – playing down Wepre Park, going to the swimming baths for hours, generally playing in the same streets even if most of the shops have changed! Shotton and Connah's Quay used to be lovely places to grow up but I am sad to say that I really don't want my future family growing up here. I've loved it up Wepre but people have changed, down the bottom of Connah's Quay and in Shotton, I don't seem to know everyone as I once did - I couldn't go anywhere when I was younger because someone always knew my mum! Her name is Lorraine Hett (Davies) – Davies of Park Grove Connah's Quay and my dad's name is Phil Hett of Shotton, does anyone know anything about either family? I am searching these sites today as my grandma, Hilda Hett, passed away last week and I am looking up her life. She was born in Shotton in 1914, she went to St Ethelwold's Church but in recent years she attended St Marks and St Davids. My grandmother's side knew Horace Salter well, he was my music teacher until he went to live down south with his son, where passed away at about 94 (I knew him until he was 92). They were also friendly with old Dr Gavin as he stayed with them when he first started off in Shotton. My Grandma's father was a butcher called William Ellsom, he owned the butchers which is now Daleside Vets in Shotton opposite Shotton Lane – does anyone know anything about my great grandfather? I know he owned the land where B&Q is and had an abattoir at the back of his butchers (97 & 95 Chester Road East and 105 Chester Road East (not there any more)). If anyone has any information on the Ellsoms or Hetts please get in touch.

I was born in Shotton at 14 The Woodlands in 1942 and then moved to 16 Taliesin Ave +/- 1950. Went to sea in 1959 and have never lived in Britain since. Now doing some ancestry research. I've chased the origin of the Biggs and Campden families to the Black Country around Birmingham and Wolverhampton where the men worked in iron works and who moved to Shotton 1896+ to work at John Summers. They mostly lived around Bridge St and Brook Road.

I was born in the Catherine Gladstone maternity home in Mancot in 1946. I attended Sandycroft school when I was 7-10 yrs old. My best friends were Meryl Humphreys of Sandycroft, and Diane Humphries. I remember that they ran away from school with me to my aunty Ede's house Burwood, Leaches Lane, Mancot, when I had been told off by the teacher for being cheeky! I wish I had such good friends now! Happy days!

Patricia Lomax from Shotton, living in St Andrews
Thanks everyone, I've just spent a wonderful hour reading all the postings here. I lived in Shotton until I was 18. Bill Tyrell, Derick Williams - it looks as though you knew my father, Tommy Lomax. He was born in 1929. I don't know which primary school he went to, but I do know he went to Hawarden Grammar. He joined the Navy where he met my mum (Gwen). Sadly, he died in 1963 (only 33 years old). I was 8 at the time, so he never got to pass on details of him growing up in Shotton. I do remember him working in the Labour Exchange in Victoria Road. Any stories (good or bad!) you, or anyone else reading this, might have I'd really love to hear them. Bill, I'll definitely do one of your walking tours next time I'm in Shotton. Memories for me: King Edward Street and all the friendly people there. Playing in the backs and on Alexandra St swings (remember them being built). Custard tarts from Jacksons. Milk machine outside the cafe opposite where you could get triangular cartons of milk for 4d. The chippy at the top of the street. (You'd get a free bag of chips, if you took him old newspapers!) There was a sit down area in there where we'd go for a treat. Alhambra on a Saturday afternoon. Buying Superman comics (9d) from Walls and going for the pink Echo on Saturday evenings for the neighbours (used to get a penny for going, a threepenny bit if they were feeling generous!). Broken biscuits from EB Jones. Going over the Brook when you weren't supposed to, also the Banks (definitely weren't supposed to go there!). The echo you made when walking through the white-tiled tunnel under the bridge. Train spotting and waving to the man in the wagon at the end. Steam trains stopping at Shotton station in the middle of the night. Winter evenings, playing out until it got dark (feet and hands freezing cold, but amazingly they'd warm up after a while!). Then summer evenings where it seemed I was the only one who had to go in early! Staying at my grandma's (cottage at top of Shotton Lane) and her cooking breakfast on an open fire (no electricity or gas). Dr Gavin (senior) and that faint slightly, antiseptic TCP-type smell about him! School for me was firstly the nursery at the bottom of Central Drive, then Shotton CP - Mr Williams, the headmaster, Mr Foulkes (top class), Miss Jones (Infants). Used to love the Friday morning sing-songs with Mr Williams playing the piano. He'd have us singing songs from the 1930s musicals. Can still remember them now! Miss Pearce rather glam, but very strict. Things turned comprehensive just as I was leaving primary school - did two years at Shotton Jnr High (old central school) then Deeside Senior High. Teachers - The Bug, Doc Lumb, Flash, Miss Macdonald (PE), Mr Kemp (maths), Mr Scattergood, Mr Trinder (English) etc etc. I remember the Hodsons in Green Lane. Aunty Olga? I'm related, but I don't know how. Also an Aunty Rose at the bottom of Brook Road (bungalow over the stream). Again, I don't know I'm related. Anyone remember my mum - Gwen Ashley (she remarried after my dad died)? She worked as a barmaid in the Central Hotel and then the Shotton Hotel (now The Clwyd) for many years. Also I'm trying to find out if anyone who has any knowledge of the Davisons (mostly called Thomas) - mariners from Shotton/Connah's Quay, but were going way back to the beginning of the 19th Century now. Thanks again for these postings. Great memories of a place I still refer to as home.

Hello does anyone remember my Mum, Doreen (nee Hodson) and my Da Ivor? We emigrated to Australia in 1970 with my brothers Neil and Gary. My sister Victoria was born in Australia. My Mum used to live in Green Lane and Dad lived in Dee View, Ewloe. When they were married they moved to Chester Close. Unfortunately Dad died in 1998 of a brain tumour. I spoke to Mum the other day about this site and gave her a copy of the entries. She remembers a lot of the names. She believes that she may have been Dr Gavin's first baby. Please reply if you have any memories of my Mum and Dad and I will pass them onto her.

She had an uncle Cess & Aunty Cissy who owned the chippy on Chester Road East, just past the end of Wellington St, when they retired they moved to a bungalow in Strickland St. I was at school with Maureen in Rowleys Drive, she was a Mancot girl as I recall.

To Paula Jones, I knew your Nan and grandad, Pat and Basil Eccles. Also sons Bernard and Keith. Basil was a manager at Hansons dairy when I worked there for a while in the 60s. I think he was on the transport side. I also remember both Pat and Basil at Pentre club and had many great nights there, my eldest son Robert did the disco sometimes. My mother in law's family lived next door to the Eccles family, and my mother in law played with Phylis Eccles in Hawarden Way, Mancot.

I was born at 50 Ash Grove, Shotton, in 1941 and have many happy memories of growing up in Shotton. Started my schooling at the nursery which was within the grounds of the Central School or DEESIDE SECONDARY MODERN at 5 years. I started at the council school in King George St, a great school with Mr Haydn Roberts (brother to little Gwylym the bus conductor) my favorite teacher and Mr Williams would entertain us with his piano playing (honky tonk style) Miss Worrel, and the two Miss Pearses. I got the cane a few times for being late and one morning I was pulled up for having dirty shoes ( I had been kicking a ball around in the street on the way to school). My excuse was that my mother hadn't cleaned them. I was told in no uncertain terms that it was my job to clean them and got three strokes! The backs of Ash Grove and Health St were the playground. David Anglesea, Albert Matthews, Barry Bennett, Jimmy Harding, Fred Harrison, Teddy Benion etc all good mates. Gordon Harrison, Fred's brother, was a few years older and was a trainee projectionist at The Ritz cinema. He was called up for national service and sadly was killed in active service in Korean War. The Harrisons house was the end one nearest to the Rowleys Drive railway bridge and had to be demolished many years ago due to subsidence. Ash Grove had many good families: The Docherties, Westheads, Bullocks, Lewis, Coultons, Rillys, Parrys, Bennetts, Mathiesons, Dales, McGaw, and more. Go through Ashfield Road and through the backs to Jeffs sweetshop, old Mrs Jeffs and her daughter Mona. I remember the BBC 6 o'clock news saying that sweets were to come off the ration and every kid dashing around to Jeffs to see if we could have some. Of course she said yes, by 7 pm she had just about sold out! Ash Grove also had Joe Mulliners undertakers where he made the coffins. The building later became the youth club next door to Walls warehouse, at the top of the street was the telephone exchange and on the corner was the post office and sorting office, Boots The Chemists opened next door then there was Walls sweetshop. Happy days!

Wonderful memories of a great childhood. Seemed to fight a lot especially with the Quayites. Civic on a Thursday, Jones chip chop, Alhambra, Ritz, Plaza and Hippodrome. Fishing at the "Rosie" on the Dee and Rennies. Climbing to Wepre Castle - golden days.

I too was at Shotton Council school in 1944. In Litle Jonahs' class at one end of the main hall. About 50 of us in the class. As I remember it, we had a headmaster (Mr Davies or perhaps Williams). He used to cane you if you were late for school. No excuses even listened too, let alone allowed! I wonder what parents these days would do?

In my last year at Shotton Council School in 1944 I remember Kenny Fellows getting out of his desk to ring the hand bell to signify the lunch break without permission. For this he received the cane but then made the mistake of kicking Mrs Hughes in the shin. I have always remembered the severe beating that he took.

And their next door neighbours Mr. and Mrs. Peters, on the other side Mr. and Mrs Shortland. We lived directly opposite the home of your Grandparents. What a great site. I know it's mainly all about Shotton but I now live in Sandycroft. When I was in Hawarden High School I used to have an after school job at a home in Bennetts Lane in Hawarden which paid me £93 a month which was a lot then. I used to save my money for clothes and shop at Vanitas fashions in Connah's Quay by the Boathouse.(it's now a dentist). Them days it used to take me to the Civic on a Wednesday night which we all thought we were the bees knees getting drunk. I've just read through this list and found Karl Hewitt on here. You wont remember me but me and my brother were talking about you the other day. He's Pete Eccles who used to be the DJ in Jokers. Ahhh, go on, I bet that brings back memories. Great to hear all the stories - keep adding them! Bye.

    Derick Williams, Australia
I was born at 39 Brook Road Shotton in 1933. Went to school @ St Ethelwolds & then at Hawarden Grammar. I used to be the handbalancer in Fred Fulwoods act, "The Ramoni Trio". I served my time as a toolmaker at Scotts, Ellesmere Port, with Les Lomax & Bill Tyrell. Later moved to Sandycroft & then had a boarding House in Rhyl. My wife Kathleen & I did an act on the clubs (Manchester in the 60s had over 800 clubs!). Emigrated to Australia in 1972 with my family - wife & 4 boys. Now live in Bundaberg in Queensland. Found this site the other day & what memories it has brought back about Shotton & the wonderful time I had there growing up. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. I often wonder what happened to the people I grew up with: Raymond Forrester, Kenny Fellows, Roland Allman. Ernie Stokes, Tommy Lomax, Ron lloyd, too many to mention. I reckon Shotton was the best place anywhere to grow up in but then everything was so innocent & as young kids you could play up the Wet Lane or in Wepre Woods all day if you wanted (we got chased by the farmer from Killens Farm many times). Happy Days.

Nice to hear the mention of Fred Fulwood. I remember as a youth going to his gym/club behind Hendy's pub and summer hols with Fred at the swiming baths. And later on at his home gym on Wepre Drive (the tourture chamber) and beutiful Geogina with a nice cuppa after a workout. I'm sure many Deesiders who went to the Gym would remember my dad (Derick Williams) and uncle Barry. I'm sure my dad would love to hear from any of the crew. shaun

Grew up in the Quay as part of the Roscoe family. Seemed the best place in the world to me as a kid. Jackson's butchers on the high street with their mouthwatering pork pies. Sammy Dick's sweet shop on the high street where you could get 2oz of sherbert for 10p. Spending every Saturday in the Quay baths, staying in the water so long that your fingers crinkled up...Dalrimples chip shop on the way home, where if you were lucky, the girls behind the counter would give you a free bag of scratchings. Good Friday trips to Wepre castle, the whole family crawling up the mud banks to reach the castle itself where soggy sandwiches would be unpacked and devoured hungrily. The Thursday market. Riding down the cricket pitch banks on cardboard boxes during the hot, summer months. Taking walks down to the river and going blackberry picking. Connah's Quay high school...Peter Evans, Brewster, Sheila Williams, Durkin and Chalmers. The Tiv in Buckley every Thursday night...rock bands, sweaty armpits and hair galore. The cooling towers, that symbol of home that could be seen from miles away. I go back to the Quay regularly to visit family and it hasn't changed much besides the ugly new Dee bridge and Asda, which seems to have been the cause of a lot of shops in Shotton closing.

I used to work at Shotton Low Level in 1961 when Billy Sheen was the Station Master at The High Level. I used to walk from Mancot to Queensferry then go up onto the Queensferry line at 6 in the morning to Shotton Low Level for the fish train. Switch the gas lamps off and refuel the paraffin lamps on the signals. I knew Eddie Dugan & Fred Fullward well. Those were the days, also used to work at FW Woolworths, used to ride my old motor bike round the roof on my lunch break, around the air vents, they were good days we were a happy crew.

My mum tells me that in the 44 council houses in Dee Road, we had 93 kids in the late 50s. What a wonderful street it was to grow up. I went to Custom House Lane school and like many others remember Fred Fulwood at the baths and Good Friday up at the Castle. I also delivered newspapers for John and Fred Walls on a Sunday morning to the Steelworks and then my regular paper round through the Quay and Shotton. Ah, fond memories. I still come home regularly for visits. Would love to hear from any of my former schoolfriends who may remember me.

    Ian from Salisbury
My great grandfather, Thomas Henry Haswell was Headmaster of St Ethelwold's School in Shotton from 1892 - 1922, but I don't suppose there are many readers who remember him! I believe the name of St Ethelwold's went to the new school in Melrose Avenue when that opened about 1981, and that the original school (in Plymouth Street) may still be occupied as Shotton Infants' school - can anyone confirm that? TH Haswell was the son of John Haswell who was at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 - in honour of his father, on every anniversary of the battle (20 October) TH used to haul up the signal flags used by Nelson at the battle spelling out "England expects that every man will do his duty". Can anyone recall this event? - does it still happen I wonder? I recall visits to Shotton in the 1950s - great place, but clean air hadn't been invented then! But I do look forward to returning next year.

Can you please help me trace the history of Shotton amateur football as my dad played from about 1936 - 1955 and I know very little about it. Any information would be very gratefully received.

What a belting site, some great names from the past. If anyone has any stories or photos from when my dad Tom and Uncle Alf played football for Shotton - from prewar to about 1955, please contact me. I planned to move away from Shotton but only got as far as Aston Park, the pull of the place is too strong.

I remember St Ethelwoulds School - Mr J Crossley and Mr Rowlands. I remember playing on the railway lines in Shotton when the ticket office was on the main road facing Beck's newsagents. We used to jump the train to Bidston and back, then we would go to the Thursday Pitch - that's what we called it then.

Thanks for the memories, just found your site know a lot of the names mentioned, lived in the Quay for many years and of course worked in JSS. A lot of memories flooding back - Wepre woods, the Buckley line, no-one mentioned the Blue bells. Been back a few times but no more I'm afraid. Hi to all.

A lifetime at Shotton Steelworks. My grandfather, Alfred SNEAD 1869-1947, was born in Wombridge, Shropshire. In 1891 he lived in Okengates, Shropshire where he was an Iron Worker, aged 22. Some time between 1891 & 1899, Alfred moved to North Wales where he commenced work at Summers Steelworks in Shotton. On 5th Aug 1899, Alfred married; Eleanor JONES, who was a local Buckley girl; the marriage certificate stated that Alfred's occupation was an "Iron Worker" (at Shotton Steelworks). 03 Feb. 1947, Alfred Snead's Death Certificate stated that his occupation was a Furnace man at Steelworks (retired). Question: does anyone remember Alfred SNEAD, he lived in Pentre until his death in 1947? Where would one find anything about Alfred's long service at Shotton Steel works?

    Rob Povey, Prestatyn.
What a wonderful web site, I have just had so many memories in the last two hours. I remember Fred Fullwood with his white alsations, god bless him. I am one of the Povey twins, born in Shotton, but lived in Connahs Quay until I was 22. It's a shame you can't recreate the past, the castle in the woods on bank holiday, looking for the secret tunnel, needless to say no one ever found it, but I think one of the best memories was when they built the baths, getting a season ticket, five shilling if I remember, going home, wrinkled like prunes. Going to the civic hall, to see all the top stars at the time, the bouncers were Fred Fullwood and Bob Norry, the hard men of the era, cudgy and mellor, where are they now? Have loads of photos of the 50s and 60s including the street party for the queens coronation, if anyone wants copies please e mail me, keep up the good work with the site.

    Re Andrew Griffiths
My name is Ken Povey (one of the twins) we went to school with John Hampton right through our school years from St Davids through to Deeside Secondary Modern. The thing I will always remember about John was his blonde hair which when we left school he tried to model his hair style on Steve Marriotte from the Small Faces. He was a very nice lad that had a lot of friends. I was shocked to see his grave situated very near to my parents' grave in Connah's Quay cemetery.

It's interesting hearing about all the place I live by. I am 18 and have lived in S'croft all my life. I was wondering though if anyone knew anything about Sandycroft in the early 1900s and I was interested to hear that Alun Ashley is putting together a crofters catalogue. Nobody seems to have many photos of Sandycroft as it was.

To John Daxon, Yes I know the last time the blue bridge was opened because I opened it with my uncle (also Fred Bowden )supevising my every move. It was to allow the sea cadets ship to turn around in the basin on the chester side of the bridge and return to its mooring (this was before the road bridge was build) at John Summers.

Born in Mold Road, Connah's Quay, 1964. Moved to Wepre Hall Crescent then to Rowden Street in Shotton in approx 1973/4. Grandparents (Plant) lived in Breeze Hill, Connah's Quay, for many years. Have many happy memories of the area and am amazed how the place has changed. Shotton and Connah's Quay will always have a very special place in my heart.

    Andrew Griffiths
I have lived in Connah's Quay for the best part of twenty seven years now and even though on occasion I have lived or worked away, there is always something that keeps bringing me home. I have great memories of growing up in Connah's Quay, the Wepre Fairs, Thursday market, walks along Englefield avenue to the 'garage' for my Saturday comics and adventures up the castle with your mates on a neverending sunday afternoon amongst hundreds of them. Although Connah's Quay has changed dramatically, even over as short a period of ten years, It is still home, and always will be. My family mostly originated from the Primrose Street area, going back as far as the late 1800's, I would be interested in hearing stories of this street and in particular if anyone knew the Hamptons, my great grandparents Jack and Susannah Hampton and my Nan, Shirley Hampton, later Griffiths or my Great Uncle John Hampton. They lived in No.2 Primrose Street circa 1935-1997.

Regarding Watkins_88 info on Shotton Hall. What he said was interesting to me. I happened onto this site due to the fact that my Watkins line comes from a JAMES WATKINS from Wales that came to Virginia with Capt John Smith. Of course our Watkins Line lived in Virginia from 1608 and my Grandfather moved from Virginia to Texas. I am interested in Shotton Hall being as it once was owned by William Watkins who would have been my 9th Great Grandfather.

    Arthur Swain, Shepshed, Leice
Referring to comments by Wendy Pearson. I lived at 3 Salisbury Street from 1938 until 1954. I remember the Read family. The Doyles lived at 5, Mrs McIntosh at 9. I had an 'auntie' Elsie living at the last house on the odd number side of the street. I went to St Ethelwold's school with Mr Roberts as head and later Bill Crossley. I very well remember 'manners maketh man'. Also the maypole, rounders using poles mounted in wooden blocks, and cricket with the wickets mounted similarly. I remember going to the Alhambra where a radio variety show was being broadcast from. Mr Edge was manager at the Ritz. Ice creams from the Ideal, fish and chips from the chippy in King Edward St., haircuts at Ken Jones the barber. Horace Salter was my music teacher and choirmaster at the church. I used to deliver milk with him on his horse and trap. Easter walks up to Ewloe woods. Swimming in the river at the end of the breakwater. Playing in the undergrowth alongside the Shotton to CQ docks railway line. We called it the swamp. Most of my friends were from Bridge St, Ryeland St., King Edward St. Names that come to mind...Pete Bithell, Peter Evans, Thomas Glyn Jones, Eirlys Taylor, Jean Sambrook, Gwenda Tregilgas, Fay, Pat, Gordon Edge, David Marrow and Jeffrey Roy Williams. My grandfather used to take me for a walk along the river bank as far as CQ docks where he would have a pint at the pub there. I well remember the ship that used to take bricks to Ireland from the docks. After a spell at HGS, I left at the age of fifteen to join the RAF. My parents then moved to Penyffordd.

To Stuart Walton. How many memories came back when I read your piece here as neighbours we shared similar experiences also Ceri (is this the correct spelling?) and my sisters Sue, living in Hawarden, and Vicky who sadly died this year. My mum died 5 years ago but my dad, fit as a flea approaching his 81st birthday still in Taliesin Ave. It would be great to hear from your and Ceri especially as my two teenage daughters are now asking me so many questions about my youth which I need help remembering.

Hiya Tracy I also am a Quay-ite and remember hanging about with fizzy not sure I remember your hubby (Terry) though. We all used to hang around Wepre woods every chance we got. I left school in 82, and oh yes I remember Ron Jones too, he was our engineering teacher at C.Q.H.S. I live in Garden City now but would love to move back up the Quay given the chance, lots of wonderful memories from my child hood there. Ask Terry if he remembers magoo, chinks and david ashton to name a few.

I lived in Taliesin Ave from 1961 to 1971, went to Hawarden Grammar in 1967 and then to Kelsterton College. Best friend was Ian Beany Barclay from Nelson St. We lost touch when he joined The RAF after grammar school in 1967 would love to hear from him. Lots of good memories of growing up in Shotton buying airfix kits in Woolies. I delivered newspapers from Walls during the early sixties and used to sell papers on the railway station at Summers as the 10 to 6 shift ended before cycling to school, earned enough to buy my first lambretta for £25.00. On a sadder note my younger sister Vicky died earlier this year, elder sister Sue still lives in Hawarden.

I lived in Connah's Quay from aged two, now 39 and I live in Hawarden, married but no kids unfortunately! I went to Connah's Quay High and left in 1984 (I think) still rubbish at maths even though I now work for a credit card company! Am very happy, mum and dad and brother all still live in Connah's Quay. I married Terry Jones who used to hang around with Fizzy, Terry is another Quay-ite who moved to Buckley. Would be nice to hear from anyone, what memories!

Does anyone remember a guy called Gwilym who worked on the buses but was also on the pantomines in the Alambara around 1944? The shows were well attended. Also, does anyone remember Mona Jeffs' shop at the foot of the bridge that went over to the steelworks?

Does anybody remember the Working Mans Institute which was opposite the Vaughn Hall? There were snooker tables there, but I was never any good! I learnt to play cribbage with HT Edwards (TGWU organiser) and the other 'old' men (they were a lot younger than I am now). In that school you quickly learnt to play a decent game or else you were thrown off! I remember HT used to put his lit pipe into his pocket and then beating out the flames a few minutes later!

    Wendy Pearson from Shotton
I grew up at 22 Salisbury Street, Shotton, from 1943 and left Shotton 16 years later in 1959 to live in Scunthorpe with my grandmother Emily Pearson. I married Cyril Bowler from off Flint in 1960. We still come home regulary to visit relatives. I remember Shotton well and have lots of fond memories of my former years. Does anybody remember Ann and Ruth Andrews, Janet Dale , Roy and Ann Williams and Joan and Stuart Read? Went to St Ethelwold's school and church and remember Mr Salter, church organist and my piano teacher. Distinctly remember the Vaughan Hall and the dances on a Wednesday and Saturday which is where I met my husband, used to love the band and vocalist 'Lance'. Spent many a half a crown getting in! Any one else remember the good days?

I also remember Norah Nitrate and John Sam amongst others.

    Stuart Walton from Nottingham
Used to live at the top of King George street from 1953 til 1969 when I moved away due to work. Went to Shotton CP then Hawarden Grammar and remember many of the teachers. At Shotton CP who can forget Miss Worrell and Mr Jones the headmaster who suffered so much during the war in a Japanese prison camp. At Hawarden - the Doc (Chemistry), JS Williams (Physics), Flash (PE), Peter Trinder (English) and so many others. Anybody remember the scout group and 'Skip Johnson', and his attempts to keep us away from the Girl Guides when we had joint ventures? I preferred the Alhambra cinema rather than the Ritz for the Saturday afternoon tanner rush, then later the back row on Saturday evenings! However, a trip to the cinema in Queensferry provided the bonus of double seats! I remember the swimming pool opening on Wepre drive together with the Civic Hall, and queuing to see Gerry and the Pacemekers, the Escorts, Freddie Starr and the Midnighters (yes - THAT Freddie Starr!) and many other Liverpool groups on Thurday evenings. Who else went to the scout hall dances in Connah's Quay once a month on Saturday nights - with 'The Chariots' from Buckley playing? On a sadder note I remember a baby drowning in the 'Blue Hole' and Eric Roberts diving to retrieve the tiny body. I also remember the axing of so many jobs at John Summers in 1966 and the devastating effect it had on the local economy. Thanks Shotton - you gave me a happy upbringing.

Brendan I knew your grandad very well, top man and a really first class billiard player. I served my time with Les junior at G.L.Scotts Ellesmere Port as a Toolmaker met up with him when he came over from U.S.A. So sad he died so young
    Wed May 17 07:40:51 2006

    Brendan Oldfield, Chester
Still only 29, but I do remember Fred Fulwood, and his home gym on Wepre Drive (he used to help my brother build his strength up for boxing). I remember Fred being extremely stong - even at an old age. Does anyone remember a billiard player call Les Lomax who used to play in the Ranch and at the Cons club? He was my Grandad (Mum's father), and I have inherited some of his billiards trophies - I believe he was quite good. Also had uncles Fred and Les (Jnr) Lomax, Fred still lives in Australia and Les died in America a few years back. As I live so close, I go to Shotton a lot. Hendy's is still going strong (even after a few bad landlords), but Annie and Joe who run it now are brilliant. I do find it funny though how although everyone loves Shotton (including me), how nearly everyone has moved away (including me). I suppose there aren't the opportunities there any more. And the 'intrusion' of ASDA has torn the heart out of local shops. Anyway, I hope that people are still so fond of the place in 40 years time for me to look back at!

    Maureen Perry / Bromilow
I grew up in Terrig Street Queensferry, went to Aston school until I left at 15. I then served my time as a hairdresser at Marjories in Shotton Lane for 6 years. This was the busiest hairdressers in Shotton especially on Fridays and Saturdays when staff from summers and cortaulds used to get their hair done ready for their weekend nights out. Shotton was a wonderfully busy town with shops where you could buy anything fashionable and stylish for yourself or the home. I remembered finishing work on Saturday and going up shotton to Georges for a dress to wear on saturday night to go to the Ritz in Rhyl or the Majestic in Chester. Shotton is still a lovely place although not as thriving as previouse years, this is probably due to the large Supermarkets and out of town shops being built.

I went to the Dickie Gwyn until 1972. Some weird memories of the 'Quay after reading this site, I never swam in the Dee, too scared of the shifting sands. Clearly remember Fred Fulwood at the baths, anyone remember his dogs running through the woods? Do they still walk to the castle on Good Friday, I forgot about that. Still visit regularly although I have lived in England since training as a teacher in 1976. I still consider the 'Quay as home.

It is a shame that the town I was born in is having its history taken away by local youngsters who don't care and run riot and have no respect and what does North Wales Police do about it? Nothing apart from issue sun tan lotion to its over worked officers. The High Street has had its soul ripped out with only cheap tacky shops left - why have the local council not done more to get investment in the area?

My sister, met her husband Mike Beddow at the Vaughan Hall, my husband Tony Worth lived next door to Mr and Mrs Oldfield, someone wanted to know about them in their comments, I paddled in the Dee, played on the Rock (playground)it was along the old Dock Road, we lived at 307 High Street, Garlands the Hairdressers was over the road and Grooms Bakery, this is Connah's Quay, we used to walk to Shotton on Saturdays, Easter we went to Castle Hill Woods, used to go up the Buckley Line past the Round House, to look for the bluebells. A brilliant wandering childhood, that cannot be recaputured now.....I remember the Hippodrome on a Saturday Afternoon all the kids went.

Born in Mancot and raised on Clwyd Street Shotton to the age of 11 ... Hendy's was my first underage pint ... Remember walking to the baths in the hot summer of '76 might as well have lived there ... I have a lot of ancestry from Shotton and Connah's Quay ... My great great grandmother was nurse Theresa Jones who was the nurse for Connah's Quay, Shotton, and Queensferry and lived in the house on the corner of brook road ... My granfather was Edward John Roberts who was fondley remembered as Ned John and livened up many a pubs around Deeside with his piano playing days (sadly passed away now) could go on but wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else
