Debauchery in Flint & Bagillt

Flint

Peter Metcalfe submits extracts from a 19th century report about Flint & Bagillt which found them full of promiscuous debauchery - but not as bad as Rhos!

Extracts taken from a book published in London in 1848 entitled "Reports of the Commissioners of Inquiry into the state of Education in Wales" which appeared in the July 2005 edition of the Clwyd Family History Society magazine 'Hel Achau' (no copyright) commenting on social conditions in Denbigh and Flintshire. The following evidence relates to the town of Flint:-

speech marks The streets of the town are filthy; the houses are wretchedly built; and in worse repair; and the people are squalid and in rags. I visited several cottages in the town. A small house, 10 or 12 feet square, with a chamber above, accommodates on an average 2 parents, 6 children, and 6 lodgers. The floors are of earth, and in wretched condition. There is no room for furniture, and the interiors are filthy and unwholesome. I saw other cottages of 9 feet square, with no other room adjoining. These generally contain a husband and wife, with infants and a lodger.

I visited a parish almshouse of this description, containing 9 people, a father, mother, and 7 children. There was one bed for the parents, and another for the 7 children, both placed in the only room which the house contained. The eldest boy was 16 years old, the eldest girl 15. The character of the inhabitants is degraded in respect of turbulence intemperance, and debauchery. The prevailing vice of the neighbourhood is drunkenness, which is rendered more flagrant and pernicious from the prevalence of the old Welsh custom of keeping merry nights. A week previous to my visit a murder had been committed by a party (as was supposed) who had been thus engaged in revelry.

The clergyman informed me that fornication also is common in the town and neighbourhood; but that in Flintshire, as in England, it assumes the form of promiscuous debauchery, and is not a recognised and systematic institution as in other counties of North Wales. The female population are ignorant of economy and of all kinds of domestic industry; in consequence of which, and of the general improvidence and intemperance of the men, the social condition of Flint is almost as degraded as at Rhosllanerchrugog (Ruabon). speech marks

In the adjoining district of Bagillt:-
speech marks In some of the collieries the men are paid very other Saturday, and do not return to their work till the following Tuesday or Wednesday. In Bagillt and in the adjoining town of Flint the old Welsh custom of keeping a merry night (noswaithlawen) is still prevalent, and, being generally reserved for a Saturday, is protracted to the following Sunday, during which drinking never ceases. The custom is represented by the clergy and others as involving the most pernicious consequences.

I saw two men stripped and fighting in the main street of Bagillt, with a ring of men, women, and children around them. There is no policeman in the township. The women are represented as being for the most part ignorant of housewifery and domestic economy. The girls are very early sent to service, but marry as early as 18, and have large families.

Women are not employed in or about the mines, but spend most of their time in cockling, or gathering cockles on the beach. They have low ideas of domestic comfort, living in small cottages dirty and ill-ventilated, and at night are crowded together in the same room, and sometimes in the same bed, without regard to age or sex. speech marks

Answering Jackie Williams' message, it's Jamie Roberts from Bagillt asking how you, Tom and the kids are. It's nice to be able to get in touch with you, if you hear from Graeme tell him I am asking for him. I have seen Terry in Buckley area, next time I see him I will stop and ask him to get in touch with you somehow, see you soon.

I went to the R.S.A [Returning Soldiers Associaion] just like the British Legion in Flint before Christmas. I got talking to this man in our group. When he asked me where I was from I said I was from Wales. He said his family were from Wales and I wouldn't know where the place was. I said 'try me?' I nearly fell off my seat when he said BAGILLT. I told him that's where my family are from and also from Flint. His mum and dad were called Phyliss and Robert Stokoe and his grandmother was Idia Clarkson. His granddad invented something that helped the air into the mines. Hi, to Jackie in Nelson, NZ.

Thank you to Jean Durham and Peter Lloyd for replying. Thank you Jean for visiting my mum and dad's grave, that is such a kind, lovely thing to do. Brent is doing very well and living near to London, I will remember you to him.
Peter, thank you for your interest. My grandmother Esther Louisa Urwin and my grandfather Jack Urwin used to live inthe bungalow. It was my uncle Eddie Urwin, my father's younger brother, who was chief engineer on many famous cruise ships. My father (Harry) was a consultant civil engineer eventually but had started out, I believe, as a plumber. Thank you for your kind words about my father. He was a wonderful father and a true gent. I would dearly like to keep in touch with you both.

Could any one help re a relative in the army - William Davies born about 1835? Only Sarah soldier's wife in 1871 census, does anyone know what Regiment he would be likely to have joined? The family are an old Flint family, his brother Joseph was a shoemaker and they lived in Chester Road. Grandfather named David Davies worked in United Alkali Co died 1928 in Mold.

The Committee of The Royal British Legion (Bagillt Branch) wish to thank everyone from the village for, again, supporting the 2008 Poppy Appeal to the tune of £1403-39p, the best for many years. There was again a very good turnout on Remembrance Sunday, both at the Church and at the Cenotaph and it was nice to see, once again, many of our young people, even through the heavy rain. We wish the Rev Bryan Taylor a very happy retirement and welcome the Rev Sarah Hildreth to the village.

Yes I remember your mum and dad very well, Auntie Tilly and Uncle Harry...your dad was my mother's (Edna Urwin Pritchard) first cousin. Brent, your brother, was my playmate when we were very young. Your mum and dad used to rent no 1 Eldon Cottages from Robert John Williams (my grandad). Your grandad Jack and my nana Sally, were brother and sister. I was at your mum's funeral but I don't think you recognised me. I do go and put flowers on your mum's grave at xmas and Easter. Funnily your mother and father lived in the house my daughter lived in previously in boot end of Bagillt. The people they stayed with were known as Mr & Mrs Jones-Major. My mother (Edna) is 79 on Dec 7, and keeping well.

I was born in Conway's Row next to the cinema. Does anyone remember Johnny Lloyd's sweet shop? My dad, Humphrey Davies, worked in Courtaulds Castle works, Flint, before he passed away in 1966 having worked there for over twenty years.

To Linda Urwin, did your mum and dad live in the bungalow at the top of Pen y Glyn in Bagillt? As a child I lived in no 50 Pen y Glyn and used to play in Harry's garden, he was a good friend of my father's (now deceased). Your father, if it was the same Harry Urwin, was chief engineer on the cruise ship Canberra. He wasn't home that often but I remember him with great affection.

To Rebecca Gratton, there are still Grattons living in Bagillt, I also remember an old man called Sammy Gratton when I was a lad in the early '70s. Also hello to Lee Marvin Williams. How are you and your family keeping? Hey Lee, you might remember Sammy Gratton, also Elvina and Patricia.

Rebecca Gratton, just discovered this site. My mother's maiden name was Gratton. There were a large number of Grattons living in and around the local area. There are a few Grattons still living in Flintshire. I have only my mother and one aunty still living, descendants of Enoch Gratton my gandfather.

Margaret Sheen - Nice to hear from you, my Dad (Les) said you were now living in Aberystwyth. Hope you're well.

Margaret Sheen, Flint
I lived in Flint for 71 years. Now living with my sister in Aberystwyth. I was born on the Mount Pleasant estate. My brother, Alan, was the first baby to be born on the estate, and the gorst workers presented him with an engraved silver spoon, that he still has. Flint has changed for the better, but has a long long way to go. I have sent many letters of complaints to the council, who run or ruin our lives.

My great grandparents are from Bagillt - Hugh Roberts married a Catherine - they moved to Ashton-in-Makerfield some time between 1871 and 1874. Does anyone have any information on them?

Price-Wood from Bridgend, S Wales
I found this site looking for my brother's grave plot in Flint cemetery. His name was Ashley Davies from Woodfield Ave. I'm so glad I found the site. All my family came from Bagillt and surrounding areas. My grandparents were Frederick Royle [love that name] and Florence [Florrie]Price from 'ISEL FRYN', Top Hill, next door to the doctor who had nasty geese on his drive that would chase you if you walked past. Grandad worked in Courtalds Greenfield for years - was trainer [the one with the sponge and bucket] for Bagillt Football Club and sang in the Trelawnyd Male Voice Choir. He also had racing pigeons which he won lots of trophies for. Gran played the organ in the chapel. I spent every holiday in Bagillt, it was the best memories of my whole life. Spent a lot of time on the 'cob' watching the trains. I've spent the last 10 years in Australia, and now back for a short while. I will be visiting my old haunts next week, and places I've never been to. Can't wait to see Bagillt again. Apparently, my mum Beryl Lambert, nee Price, was an usher in the Bagillt cinema but has no photos. I also have cousins in Rhyl area who I have lost contact with; Yvonne and Ainsley LLoydd [once had pub on main road in Mostyn]. Hope Bagillt hasn't changed much. What a wonderful place to grow up in.

I am the granddaughter of Rees Jones, whose parents were Martha Ann Jones and Arthur Jones. Arthur worked in a colliery until he lost his arm in a pit accident after which time he took up preaching. My Grandfather's siblings included Llewellyn (born circa 1880), Mary (born 1895) and Gilbert (born circa 1900). Does anyone know anything about the family that remained in Bagillt? My grandmother, who is 106, wants to find out about her late husband's family and my father (David Rees Jones) would like to know if he has any cousins (I'm sure he must have - it was a very large family)

Darby, I haven't seen you since school days a long time ago. Is little Neil working back up in north Wales? I think he said the last time he'd be working on the A55 with his son. Good site this, hope more people get to know about it. Last time I was in Rhyl I was buying a map of NZ in WH Smiths. That was 7 years ago. Take care.

I drove through Bagillt for the first time in two years the other day. Can't believe how many houses have been built there. I bet (SARGE) Roberts has made a few quid laying bricks. And hey Lee Marvin my cousin Neil Williams (NIDGE) now of Fowlkstone mentioned you the other day.

What a great description of Bagillt of old at the top of this page. Men fighting in the street and women going cockling on the beach and living in cramped, unventilated conditions. Blimey, there must be a bloody good book in this. Carl Renshaw get your note pad out and start typing. Hollywood beckons for a great story of an old Welsh village overlooking the Dee estuary. Hello to Carl by the way!

Doing some family research for my friend whose family originated from the Durham area but 98% sure the Leighton side came from Bagillt. So did a semi study and in 1841 there appear to be 14 families (couples) in the census and I have tracked to 1871 and they all seem to be descended from these 14 couples. The one I am interested in says in 1841 not born in county and in 1851 says he is - typical! But the baptisms on the IGI and the census all point to the earliest Leighton being born about 1780. Does anyone think they may have emigrated from say Shropshire? Also, the line I am looking at all the sons moved to Durham area and also intermarried with the Hughes who also moved. Someone previously mentioned a Jemima marring a James Bellis and I think this would be the Jemima daughter of Samuel and Catherine, baptised 22 Oct 1826.

Has anyone got a photograph of the old Menai Bridge Public House that was in Oakenholt, Flint? My father was born in one of the cottages adjoining it. The cottages and the pub have long since been demolished. And there doesn't seem to be any photographs featuring the pub or the cottages at the various Record Offices or libraries.

Hello, I have an Edward Roberts, steward to Sir John Conway and he married his daughter Margaret Conway. They lived at 'the woods' near Hawarden and afterwards he married Lucy Lloyd. The only child of Edward Roberts and Margaret Conway was Thomas Roberts born 1697 died April 26 1757. He married Mary Hickcock. They had 9 children all born at 'the Woods' Hawarden, Flintshire. Anyone connected to these families please? It is said that Margaret Conway is the daughter of Sir John Conway.

To William Russell Jones, Cefn Mawr. I am very pleased to hear from you. My grandfather was Henry Conway. Who sadly lost his life at 25 years of age, in the Gallipoli invasion. I have beeen desperately trying to find out more about the Conway family, who I am related to, and that lived over the line in Flint. I have photographs of my grandfather and also my grandmother Sarah Emily Cartwright. Myself and my daughter have been researching our family tree for quite some time. With much more progress made with the Cartwright ancestors. Maybe we could exchange information. By either telephone or email on a more personal basis? All the very best to you and your family.

My paternal grandmother's family moved from Bagillt to Stoke on Trent in the 1850s. My gt gt gt grandfather was called John Bellis and he married Jemima Layton/Leighton in the Chapel of St Mary's, Bagillt. Does anyone have any further information on these families or indeed why they would have moved to Stoke on trent? Interestingly enough, a few of their daughters married men from Bagillt or the surrounding areas, that had also moved from Bagillt, so it wasn't an isolated incident, Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are ruins in the woods at the back of the Manor estate. We used to play there when we were kids. There is also a huge mound in the field nearby looking west. This mound in the field has no earthly reason for being there. As it happens, there is the old London road (Roman Road) that runs the length of Bagillt. From the Gadlys towards the Wern you'll find that it is still cobbled. Were these in fact layed by the Romans 1600 to 2000 years ago? The remainder of the Roman road is at the back of Romans way in Bryntirion, I think it's been tarmaced over now due to houses being built down there in 2000! The course of the road would have led right through where the castle in the woods is and the very large mound in the field. Is it all connected I wonder! Can anyone confirm to me what I knew when I was a child. Maybe someone can go for a Sunday afternoon walk to see what I'm talking about.

Would any of the Conway family from Flint like to make contact with me for our Family Tree? My grandfather was Henry Conway and he died in the First World War in 1917. He married my grandmother Sarah Emily Cartwright in 1914. His mother was called Sarah and the family lived in Castle Street. I have a photograph of my grandfather and his brother James in army uniform which Mr Metcalfe from Flint will include in the book he is currently writing.

To D, The castle which was once in between Bagillt and Flint is sometimes refered to as Hen Blas (do a net search and you'll get a fair few hits). You can walk to the two large remaining wooded mounds although I think it's on the land of Evan's farm (not too sure about that). If you want to walk there here's how. Walk up the lane at the side of the new cemetery in Flint and take the first left into the field behind the woods. Follow this round and look away from the estuary. You'll see the start of some more woods in the distance. If you walk away from the Dee and keep going, you'll come to these woods which are the start of a deep, steep sided valley. Keep walking away from the Dee and eventually you'll come to two huge mounds of earth which were once part of this castle. I've walked up there many a time and it can be a challenge as it is heavily wooded and the slopes are really steep. Still, it's worth the trek.

An interesting read, my family moved from bagillt sometime between 1891-1901. Robert gratton (b1868) moved up to the north east with his brother john (1862), they left their wives and children in bagillt for up to 5 years before Sarah Gratton (nee Hughes, 1867) after no word from her husband followed robert up here only speaking welsh and dragging their 7 children with her! I would love to know if we still have any connections in flintshire, robert's parents were richard gratton (1835) and margaret williams (1835) and i know he left a brother, samuel in bagillt, sarah's, Edward Hughes (1841) and an isabella, (1844, ysceifiog). Any ideas welcome.

A strip show was set up at The British Legion in the 1960s. People were so appalled at such degrading goings on that a lot made complaints to the authorities. The County Herald came up with the headline that was up to the minute with what was on TV at the time. It read...'BAGILLT...THE NAKED CITY'! Anyone remember?
