Old Flintshire county

St Winefride's Well, Holywell Information about the smallest county in Wales taken from a BBC Wales TV programme called Counties of Wales.

  • More about Flintshire

The original county of Flintshire was in three separate parts having been made into a county by Edward I in the 1200s.

The main part of the county is what exists today with the towns of Buckley, Connah's Quay, Flint, Holywell, Mold, Queensferry and Shotton.

But Rhyl, Prestatyn and St Asaph, now part of Denbighshire, once belonged to Flintshire too.

A large detached part of old Flintshire, called Maelor Saesneg, is bounded on the north west by Denbighshire, on the north east fringes by Wrexham and Cheshire, and on the south by Shropshire.

And there was a further small detached part around Marford and Rossett, now part of Wrexham, which is on the Chester border.

Roy Hughes, I saw your question re. the Round House , Mold Rd, Connah's Quay. Of course it was asked in April 2006 so you've probably had the answer a long time ago. I have a book, published about 1991 called'"A portrait in old Photographs and Picture Postcards" Connah's Quay, Shotton & Queensferry. S.B.Publications. There is a picture of the Round House and many other places in the area, I think St Marks Church had it as a fund raiser at the time it was bought for me, I'm sure it would be of others from Connah's Quay.

I was born in Holywell, but all my memories have been knocked down - all of Whitford Street has gone. I feel sad because all the people I once knew have gone too. It feels quite alien to me now. When I do visit on a rare occasion the draw is Maggie's Kitchen in Pen-y-Ball Street - lovely food!

As a member of the Flintshire Fire Service (number 486) stationed at the village fire station, has anybody got any photographs of the old appliances or any information etc, maybe someone viewing this site may have had relatives in the station. It was B2 Hawarden and covered a fair area.

The name New Quay was changed to Connahs Quay becouse when the quay was made some ships were mistaking the name of new quay for somewhere else. On the quay itself was a chandler shop owned by a chap called Connah so they changed the name to Connahs Quay and that saved ships going to the wrong place.

I love my home town and always will for obvious reasons. i don't know much about my town but this website has made me realise how important it is. for instance the point of ayr pit, where most of my relatives worked until it closed, was a facinating place i didn't realise that it was there until i came on the website.

James Crichton & Co Ltd had a shipyard in Saltney from 1913 until 1935. They also had a yard at Connah's Quay. I quote from the Guayana Chronicle (South America!) of 21st April 2004 "Last year a fine book was published at Chester, UK by two local historians of the former shipyard of James Crichton and Company Limited at Saltney near Chester, where the ship was built in 1927." Surprising how famous they were!! :-)

The present area of Flintshire is much reduced from previously in more ways than noted above. When I was at school, the county (and national) border ran from Shotwick along the High Water Line on the Wirral side of the Dee estuary, out to Hilbre island. Sometime in the early seventies, maps appeared showing the border as running down the middle of the estuary, marked "For the purposes of the Ordnanace Survey". This now seems to be accepted as the true boundary. As I now live out of the county, perhaps the outrage over this has passed me by.
