Looking through this site, a couple of names cropped up, Alfie Edgington & Hadyn Growcott. I remember them well. Alfie joined the Auxilliary Fire Service in 1963 about two weeks before me. We had wonderful times, before I joined the Fire Service as a career. Best wishes to them both.

Anyone out there who used to live in Trevor by the fun ship in Llanarch-y-Mor in the 50s? As I recall one side was called heaven and the other side hell. I lived in the house on its own at the bottom. We travelled to school in Rhyl on Rhyl United buses, driver's name Burt.

Hi Jim, made a point of looking for the sand martins and they were great - I could see their burrows in the sandy cliff and they were all darting about - wouldn't have known what they were before reading your posting - thanks.

Hi Brian, sorry about the lugworm mate the dog will eat anything thats not nailed down, and some things that are. The web team contacted me about commercial fishing in the river as they were interested in doing a piece on it. I think a lot of Flint people would be interested. What do you think? It might be difficult to contact anyone still doing it though for various reasons. Believe it or not, us below the line kids used to swim in the river around the corner from where you were fishing. We called it the caves and we used to camp there too not to be recommended but we all survived! All the best on your future fishing!
Nick, Web Team, replies: Hi Jim and everyone. Yes, we don't yet have anything on this site about fishing on the Dee estuary - and it's about time we did! To start things off it would be good to speak to someone who stills fishes there. [If that still happens] We'd also like to speak to families or people who did fish the Dee [in boats] or anyone who had anything to do with a fishing, like boat building etc. Also, who's an authority [or has knowledge] of the history of fishing on the Dee at Deeside and Flint that could help us?
Bye for now - Nick

John Beaumont. In answer to your question about the Barden below the line, I believe it was a small-holding where the Thomases lived. He was known as Bert the Barden. Most of the family still live in Flint. They lived in Albert Avenue as kids. Should be easy to get in touch with them.

Hi Jim, just read your message on fishing on the Dee, I was probably the one you saw, well if your dog is a beagle with an appetite for lug worm it was me, ha ha. See you there eh, and I will keep my worms in the box in future. If it's not you then it's nice to see people like yourself using the paths that weren't there when I was a lad. All changed now. See you soon eh.

I've just found out there is still at least one bloke left fishing the river off Flint which is good to see. There were three or four boats out yesterday and the day before but were fishing near the Wirral side. The large boat in the dock is a cockle support boat equipped with a hiab crane for loading ton bags. Another pleasant sight on the cob are the colony of sand martins nesting in the cliff. I was concerned for their welfare because of the clay pigeon shooting nearby but someone has put red flags either side of their nests and they are still there and its lovely to see.

Jim, thanks for the info - I did see that large vessel in the dock and did wonder what its purpose was - it seemed to have some sort of 'lifting' contraption on the back? Anyway your info about the fish sellers - I do remember they particularly used to sell fluke. It's a shame no Flint people fish the estuary these days but obviously is not viable. Thanks again.

Sue, I do a fair bit of walking with the dog on the Cob there are no boats now in "The Dock" sometimes known as Courtaulds gutter where the Bithells used to keep theirs. Although last week there was a large (for the river) vessel which I've never seen before. When I was a youngster below the line we lived a few doors away from the fishermen and I can remember peeling shrimps with some of their family. They had up to four clinker built boats in the dock numbered T1-T4 and had girls names. Also, I remember one was called Jill. I don't know what the T stood for but they employed a system called trammell netting which was almost unique to the River Dee estuary. The Bithell family I believe had the only Salmon license on the river at the time. There were also some real characters who used go fluking and these were quite often found selling the fish in the pub or sometimes door to door. Sadly many of these are no longer with us. I presume small commercial fishing is no longer viable on the river though talking to some of the rod and line fisherman (and there are quite few) trawlers do fish the river still. These may come from Connah's Quay or Greenfield. It's a shame if nobody off Flint fishes the river now, but I have to say the shore from Bagillt to Flint is a real hidden gem on a sunny spring morning the view is tremendous despite its industrial past.

Have been doing a bit of walking recently - along the Flint shore. Can anybody tell me if anybody fishes the estuary these days? When I was a child I can remember people selling fish door to door and also at the bottom of Swan Street. I think I can remember the Bithell family being involved in fishing in Flint but I am not sure. Would be nice to know.

I'm trying to trace a Williams family I believe lived in Henry Taylor Street (mentioned several times on this page already). I think my great uncle John Thomas Williams may have lived there. He was born in 1892, worked at Courtaulds, and was married to Elizabeth. Their children were Megan, Glyn, Gladwin and Olwen, I think. Does anyone remember them, by any chance?

Cycle Racing in Flint
Does anyone remmeber the first 'massed-start' cycle race in 1951? It began in Church Street Flint and the course lead along the coast road and up to Holywell. It then returned to Flint via Northop to a colourful finish where crowds of people lined a sun-drenched Church Steet. It was organised by myself and fellow members of the Deeside Olympic Cycle Racing Club, including Terry Bowler, Ron Hughes, Geof Williams and many others, including the Police and the Flint Fire Brigade who kindly allowed us to use their showers and changing rooms! The race complied with the rules of the British Laeage of Racing Cyclists (now amalgamated with the Cycle Racing Federation). I left Flint soon after the race to begin my deferred National Service in the R.E.M.E. and was posted to Hong Kong where I took charge of a Vehicle Workshop in the New Territories, near the communist border. I would be pleased to hear the comments of anyone who remembers the Cycle Race. Best Wishes.

My father, Joseph Henry Evans, was born in Mount Street, Flint in 1890. He was on the 1891 census in Flint with his father Edward Evans and mother Ann Evans nee Parry. His grandfather, William Evans, was born in 1812 and died in 1850 and is buried in Flint. His other granddad, John Parry, was born in 1820 and died in 1895 in Mount Street. My father was living in Bootle, Merseyside, on the 1901 census. Hoping there may be Evans in Flint today who are related to me.

Flint has such a great history, but it is becoming just like any other town, with the kids out of control, and standing around. When I look back at the really old pictures, it's amazing to think that one day people will be looking back at the way we lived. The town how it is now, will be once again, so different then.

To DMC, mill brow was the name of a thatched cottage across the stream from the old mill. It burnt down in the early '60s. My sister and I bought the land in 1963 and built two bungalows on it. I still live there and love it but the owners of the old mill want to knock it down and build a housing estate (sacrelege).

I remmber the French polisher, he used to go over the bridge, by Huntley Lodge where Jones the Oil keeps his buses and chase us back over the bridge. That was a lovely house in its day, Mr Blackmore kept his animals the other side. He was a very quiet man, we played in his barns. I lived in what's now the car park of the Tradesmans. There were three houses there once, we used to be in bed on a summer night listening to the singing of the customers in the pub.

I have not visited this site for a little while but was thrilled to read the comments from Salley, nee Bithell.I think back to those far off times growing up in Marsh Lane. I remember especially the shrimp shelling nights. Your mum and dad (Daddy Peter) would boil up the shrimps in the wash house copper, then pile them up in the middle of the scrub top table in your kitchen. The evening was a frenzy of fingers shelling the sometimes very hot shrimps. I would be so proud when your mum presented me with a cupfull of shrimp as a reward for my efforts. Also, when your dad and your brothers would string the fishing nets along Marsh Lane to repair them. I would get into bother crawling under them to get to my house or conversely to go out to play. The many memories, of people and events fom my childhood in Flint, come flooding back. However, they would be too boring for most people. But for me they are so very precious.

Karen's right. When you think about it planners' decisions affect thousands of lives. Can you imagine Flint without the flats and maisonettes but with a waterfront with shops and restuarants. This may sound pie in the sky but could easily have come about if the planners had said no in the fifties and sixties (to the flats) and yes in the seventies (to the marina). The Castle attracts thousands of visitors yearly and the estuary is of world importance. Sympathetic development may bring an income into the town and improve the image. You're wrong about one thing though Karen, Chaplins was a right dump!

I am always interested to read about Flint, past and present. Does anyone else think that there has been no progress in the town over the past 30 years? In my view the people in control have taken all the character out of the place. The big church was ruined when they removed the only bit of greenery in the town, now it's used as a loitering place for kids. The grade two listed pub, the Three Pigeons, was a lovely building to face as you came down the hill into the town centre. It's just a sad piece of wasteland with a view to the crumbling maisonettes, not a very welcoming sight for new visitors to the town. As for the millions of bricks covering the pavements, it makes Flint look like every other town within a 20 mile radius. We have a great location here, the river, rolling hills and a historic castle, somehow I don't think the town planners realise how lucky we are to live with these on our doorstep. (Wow, Sainsbury's is coming!). I loved growing up in Flint, at least I had the pleasure of going to the cinema, watching the charity bike races, the carnival parade, the pram pushes, Charter Day, youth club and then a busy social life in Chaplins!

My mother, Georgina Mallion nee Jones, was born and brought up in Castle Dyke Street in the 20s & 30s. She had several brothers & sisters, she lived next door to the Gaffneys and on the other side was the "Long Pull". In reply to Michael T Knowles of Bath (ex Birkenhead) my father Peter Bithell would have been 65 yrs old in 1960 but I think he still held a salmon licence as did some of his nephews who lived along the foreshore (opposite the castle). I think they are all dead now and there are no salmon fishing licences in the Bithell family these days. I have lost touch because I have lived in Essex for the past 25 years but there are still Bithells in the area.

In or about 1960 I became interested in the various kinds of shipping on the River Dee, and made enquiries about the navigation of the estuary. These led to a Dee fisherman, who I believe was a Bithell, living in one of several houses on the foreshore. He took me out for a day's fishing in an open boat, using trammell nets. He took six salmon and a boat full of flukes, and I witnessed the winding channel, the form of the sandbanks and the flow of the flood tide. This outing led to a trip from Mostyn with the pilot Mr Evans up to the John Summers Quay (Jetty). Does anyone know of this Mr Bithell or his relatives? He was one of the last holders of a salmon-fishing licence for the Dee estuary? Thanks for any information. MTK.

Just found this site last week - lots of half remembered names, some of whom I can place. The comment by Derrick Oare about the Liverpool Arms being the 'long pull' by virtue that the pumps were a long way form the cellar is a load of baloney. Beneath the bar pump mechanism of any pub or bar is a cylinder [which comes in different sizes (hence the term long-pull or short-pull)]. It's nothing to do with the distance from the cellar to the pump. Cylinders for beer are still half pint (long) or quarter or fifth of a pint (short). Rob Jenkins's comment about the long and short pull is correct. The Ship Hotel had full half pint cylinder pumps allowing for two pulls to make a pint and the Ship Inn had smaller cylinders which required 4-5 pulls to make a pint - that is for Cask Ale of course. Not for gas drawn pressurised systems!

To Sally nee Bithell (Essex) - I grew up in Henry Taylor Street and as kid we used to buy sweets in the 'little shop' in your house. Was Jeff your brother? He's a year older than me but I haven't seen him for while. Not sure if you remember about a budgie found in the tall trees in your garden, he belonged to us (early '70s). I have just been told about this site and some names mentioned are well known to me. I was born in Marsh Lane and the Growcotts lived next door. Hayden was their youngest child. The Gunthers lived further down the lane and next to them the Roberts (Elsie and her brother) known as the Tippys. I remember Alf Edgington's mother Esther was a frequent customer to our little shop. My mother's family (Harrison) kept the Swan Inn until 1912 and my mother Sarah was apprenticed at Miss Porter's as a confectioner. I was one of the first pupils to attend the Gwynedd School (at the top of Allt Goch) when it opened in 1950 being transferred from the C of E voluntary primary school (at the bottom of Northop Road). I used to catch the bus to Holywell Grammar School outside the Raven Hotel.

Hi All, haven't visited this site for a while - busy! Since my last visit, further information has come to light about my, and a few other contributors to this site, great grandfather Charles (Carl) Gunther. Geri in Canada tracked him down with the help of a researcher. He was born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1837. He served with 4th Battalion Prince Consort's Own Rifle Brigade in Malta, Gibraltar and Canada between 1857 and 1869 when he got a pension. He was disabled due to a series of medical problems and may have returned from Canada earlier than the rest of his fellow riflemen in 1867. During his stay in Canada he got to see the insides of one of its famous prisons. Actually spent 41 days there for larceny. He was described by the prison as being a Roman Catholic, a bachelor and of good education. A description is given in British Army records dating from 1869. He was 5 feet 5 and three quarter inches in height, brown hair, hazel eyes and of a sallow complexion. Private Carl Gunther, 1047, spent 10 years 1 month in the army but was given a pension based on 9 years 5 months due to spending time in prison on two occasions. While in Canada the Rifle Brigade saw action when Fennians tried to invade Canada from the US in 1866. Carl didn't see action because he was in Pied du Courant Prison, Montreal, at the time. Guess we not all perfect! Best wishes from Japan, Charles (W. Evans-Gunther)

Born in Prince of Wales Avenue [Flint] in 1948, and lived and worked there ever since [apart from a year living in Colwyn Bay]. It is really a credit to those who have invested so much time in creating and maintaining this site. The article on the 1840s caught my eye because in 1843 my great grandparents moved to Flint, George and Marie Martin from Castlereagh County Mayo. They were one of nearly a million Irish people who were forced from their lands due to the potato famine. They had two sons one of whom married a lovely woman who came from Harrogate. They had a family, one being my wonderful, angelic mother Kathleen, and here I am. It always has and still does make me sad when I read about comments on the bad state of Flint. Way back in those 1840s there was a lot of violence and disorder, but no less than any other community which had to absorb immigants. Has anyone bothered to look at the history of New York back then? I could go on and on with stories of the good things about Flint, and some of the bad things, devastion caused by the exit of Courtaulds. The steelworks at Shotton one employed 43% of the male poulation of Flint in the 70s. It doesn't take an economic genius to imagine what happened when British Steel sacked 10,000. This closely following the departure of three major Courtaulds factories. I cannot close without mentioning Flint's great football teams in the '50s, [the Welsh Cup]. Also in the '60s when Flint Youth brought home the Welsh Cup. And more recently a shy young lad called Ian Rush!

Flint, hmm... my description of Flint is a place where the kids in the town don't show respect to older people esp the ATTACK on a 50 year old woman in the Pandy! There are lot of problems with the youth in that area.

I have lived in Flint all my life, the first six years in Mumforth Street. My maiden name was Bithell. My mother was Ivy Williams before she married. I have two brothers and one sister. I went to Gwynedd school and then to Holywell Grammar school. I would like to hear of anyone knowing anything about old pictures of Mumforth Street. I have seen a couple and they remind me of happy times.

Fascinating reading about Catle Street and the background to industry in Flint. My father was born in Flint and my grandfather was a silk doffer at the Courtaulds factory. Message for Karen Hughes, Carole from Flint and Anne-Maria Schwarz. My father is Hugh Patrick McCormick and his Great Grandfather was Hugh McCormick who was born in Lackayl. Beyond that I have little information as my grandfather died when my Dad was four years old. I know my grandmother Hannah Mccormick was alive in 1935 but did not live too long after that. Any information you have would be appreciated.

My grandad was known as Dicky Williams - (Richard) was the youngest of brothers that I know of. Tommy, Joe, Teddy, Jack, Dicky and three sisters Lizzy, Maggie, Ginny. All the lads went away with the RWF in the war with Dicky being taken as a POW to Germany. I have tracked down one of Jack's daughters called Mona and visited her yesterday. If anyone else knows info about the family could they let me know.

Hello. Trying to find the parents of Robert Price who used to keep the Ship and Anchor or Little Ship Inn, 16 Holywell Rd, Flint from about 1900 -1909 when he died. One of Robert's daughters, Florence Annie b1878, married a William Jackson Bithell on 09/08/1906. Can any of the Bithells now living in Flint (who perhaps are doing the family tree) help me please? My grandmother, Beatrice Maud, was sister to Florence Annie Price.

Derrick Oare's comment about the Liverpool Arms cellar being a long way from the pumps could not be more wrong. The pumps were in fact situated directly over the celler. This distance being very short. The shorter the pipework, the fresher the beer.

To Alf Edgington, yes the bonfire nights were great fun. Remember putting your scooter on top of the Anderson shelter and using the main beam as a spotlight to catch the 'squares' as they tried to burn our bonfire. Yes, Henry Taylor Street was a great place to live back then. Thanks for the memory.

Hi Margaret McLaran, I'm not an old school friend or boy friend, but my wife lived next door but one down in Maes Afon, no 42. Her name was Margaret Hart. She has a sister Brenda, and brother Frank (deceased). Her mother and father, Peggy and Frank, are both alive and well. Your cousin Sandra (Joan's daughter) visits friends of ours now and again. I think my wife is about your sister Joan's age.

Since I dicovered this site a couple of days ago I haven't been able to stay away. Many fond memories of growing up in the 50s ad 60s. I remember sledding down Plas field during the winter (where Bryn Mor drive is now), Addisons fish and chip shop opposte the Mill Tavern (where they'd fill a bottle full of ale from the pump. Bill & Lil Lloyd modernised the Mill in the late sixties. We'd swim in the swimmimg pool (not very clean) up at Cornist Hall. I worked after school (late 50s) in Ellis' bakery at the bottom of Northop Rd. I had lots of 'mams'! During my time there, I was taken under many a wing. Fishing in the reservoir behind Deeside Mill. Lost touch with most of my old mates, what a great site this is. Keep it up.

FRENCH POLISHER: remember a French Polisher in Flint, must have been around the 60s. He used to wear a raincoat, a trilby hat and had round John Lennon glasses and a small moustache, and yes he did have small eyes and used to glare at us children. I seem to remember he lived in Maes Gwyn at one time, is this the same French Polisher?

We both looked for each other over the years beause we are big mates, as you know, but never saw each other till 1997. Strange, init - but it's nice to see you doing well for yourself. Keep looking on the site. It's not bad is it? See you around Ces.

From 1851 I have family living in Chester Street, Holywell: Father, John Davies, servant 41. Mother, Jane Davies 42.Son, James Davies, labourer 14.Daugher, Sarah 13. Daughter, Jane 12. Son, Samuel 11. Son, John 5 or 8. Daughter, Mary 5. Son, Mark 3. I descend from James Davies who married a Barbara Jones - believed from Esclusham - their duaghter Eliza was married first to a John Davies and then to a John Hughes Jones - who changed his name to Jones. The family moved to the Durham area and then north east, newbiggin. If anyone knows this family or anything about Barbara Jones whose maiden name was Abraham/s/Abram/swould be delighted. I have traced all of Eliza daughter Harriet's relatives but not my grandmother who was Jane Davies who married a Callan.

In reply to David Hill, Boroughbridge. It seems there is a connection with your wife's family (Hughes). The Hughes family were located in Flint the generation before your research. Roberts parents were William and Ann. Is Robert Hughes your wife's direct descendant? He was my mother's grandfather? Are you a member of Genes Reunited? We could then swap info on the family history.

In 1891 they lived at 1 Mumforth Street and by 1901 had moved to 6 Marine Terrace. I would welcome further information.

message for Steve Davies from Finland - nearly all the Davies' in Wales originate from a patronymic naming system, where children took their father's first name as their last. So most of us have an ancestor somewhere in the male line who was called something other than Davies. It means we are probably not closely related, though if you go back far enough of course we probably are. The first appearance of my own surname as Davies was in South Wales in 1848.

She lived in 87 Mumforth Street, Flint until she married in 1945 and moved to Wrexham. Her father William who came from Manchester in 1911 to Flint was caretaker of St John's Congregational Church. Her mother was Mary Jane Hughes. My mother is also related to Jones the buses. Her grandmother was Charlotte Hughes who lived on Marine Terrace, Chester Road and died in 1908 fatally injuring herself when falling down stairs. Does your mother remember my mother? Charles W. Evans-Gunther off Flint but living Japan
Hi Georgette, Charles GUNTHER and Mary GITTINS were my great grandparents. Charles was of German ancestry, possible from Eastern Prussia - which is now Poland, but he claimed to have been born in Switzerland. Mary was born in Henllan Road, Denbigh, and her father was born in Dublin of Welsh and Irish parents. Her mother was from Bristol and was named Sarah RUMMINS. Charles and Mary had 16 children and most survived. My grandfather was one of them - his name was Idwal Howell GUNTHER. The family lived at various houses in Castle Street and in the 1890s onwards (until in 1940s) had small shop. Charles died in 1896 but Mary lived on till 1926, while her daughter Mary JONES took over the shop. I would love to hear about your connection with the GUNTHER family. I have quite a bit of information and a cousin in Canada has produced a rather large family tree.

Formerly McCormick from Coed Onn Road. Very interesting reading everyone's comments. My Nana & Taid lived in Mumforth Street until it was knocked down and replaced by those tower blocks. Remember having to go down the yard to use the toilet. Nana moved to Cilfain bottom of Cornist Hill (Taid had died by then) and though it was much better for her (she had a proper bathroom and toilet INSIDE the bungalow) not sure it had the same sense of community. Parents and brother still live in Flint. Many happy childhood memories.
Message to Karen Hughes - Thomas McCormick (married to Mary Stevenson) is brother of my Taid/grandfather, John. Thomas was born in Ireland, Galway 1872 and died in Flint in 1911 - I think.

RE: Phil Tovey, What has happened to the youth of Flint is that we are now seeing the un-smacked generation coming through. They are all lacking moral fibre that can only be instilled during their formative youths, usually by the use of a good old fashioned "clack".
PS, Do you think we could get a campaign going to rebuild the 3 Pigeons, a much better house of nonsense than we have at the moment, I can taste the Wrexham lager now.

When Courtaulds Castle works finally closed and was sold to Harry Spencer in the late 1970s, he gave me the oak plaque which I think used to hang inside the main entrance.
I still have that plaque. It is beautifully carved and painted and stands about 18 inches high. Presumably it was originally commissioned when Castle works opened. Haven't decided what to do with it, but would welcome correspondence. It is no problem to provide a photograph if anyone is interested.

Hi All, Nice to see so many names I know and some folk I actually know. Lost contact with many but nice to read their comments. does anyone know of any mccormicks who lived in castle st and roskell square in the early 1900s? The Mccormick from roskell square was named Thomas and of course was Irish, his wife was called Mary and came from Flint I think.

I would like help in tracing my family history. All I know is my granfather (W. Gordon Dennis) lived in Oakenholt, died in 1959. His wife, Sarah nee Price, lived in Furlong Terrace, later in Brook Cottage, Chester Rd. Her parents were Robert and Catherine (1891 & 1901 census). Also John & Sarah Gordon of Bagillt (1891 census), my great great grand parents. Your help would be much appreciated, especially in tracing my grandfather's parents. It looks like all my family is from Flintshire, which I fondly remember as a child when on holiday.

I am currently trying to trace my Mum's family (Bradley) of Johnson Street and later Woodfield Ave, who lived in Flint for 5 generations and still do.
As yet I have not been able to find exactly where Johnson St was and would be interested in any infomation regarding.
Mum's sister married a Bennett (Geff Bennett), sadly both passed away.

Is it true that there was a tunnel found between the Castle and Church Street when they were digging foundations for the Midland Bank? Apparently it was an escape route which started part way down the well.

I have lived in Flint all my life. I have seen many changes over the years. I can remember all the old streets that are not there anymore. Those were the good old days when we used to have carnivals on the old football field and everyone used to go to the Raven Hotel. I can go back as far as before they built the flats. I was only about 5 or 6 years old.

'The Long Pull' in my recollection was the Ship Hotel (Big Ship), Trelawny Sq. So called because its pumps pulled a full half pint. This was because the Ship Inn (Little Ship), Holywell Rd had pumps that served only a quarter pint - thus 'The Short Pull'.

Hi DMC,
Mill Brow was the name of a white-painted thatched cottage near the bottom of The Bryn, just across the stream from the old water mill. My parents, Fred and Katie lived there for eight years shortly after they were married.
They used to tell me about the rats that they saw there, and about how a flash flood engulfed their cottage. The water was knee deep and Fred had to carry Katie out of the house on his back. Their furniture was ruined but they survived. My brother and sister were born at Mill Brow, but the family moved to Mumforth Street in 1934, until the late 1960's.

Dennis Mason, my nan Elizabeth McCormick and husband Jack lived in number 32. It was in the "bull ring" I was only a youngster then but remember it fondly. There was the Lloyds, Browns, Magills, Todds, Houghs and Williams to name a few. I lived over the hill in 6th avenue but my brother lived with my nan but when my mother was very ill families in the bull ring put my brothers and sisters up until she was well again, they were great people.

Plenty of good hard working decent folk always happy to spend time and chat and i myself have got many a friend in the town. Good stuff and keep the old stories rolling in. Vicky do you know when they are completing the rest of the bike track?

Only just found this site, but what a lot of good stuff. We had to pass along Upper Queen Street to get into my father (Bill Bevan) builders yard and mother owned three or four properties in Queen Street. During Carnival week these streets were decorated with paper flowers (Mrs Forsyth - husband drove for Lloyds buses in Bagillt). Another letter mentioned the building adjacent to the railway car park. My father could go there and buy cement, we'd also have to go and collect coffin (Dad was also a Funeral Director) ready for the burial. Who remembers the French Polisher, God we were afraid of him, he would stare at us, as kids, whilst he was polishing the finished coffin. My wife (Viv, Betty Armstrong's daughter) and I now live on Marsh Lane and when we moved there, there were the remains of a two storey stone built cottage (the Gunthers were mentioned in one letter), as well as the remains of a smaller single storey cottage, which was occupied by a chap whose name I think was Tippy. He was a bachelor and lived with his siter. Nice to see some comments from New Zealand, my eldest daughter Anna lived in Rewaka (South Island) but sadly passed away two years ago from cancer. There are not many of our family left (except hundreds of grand children!)but we are a Flint family born and bred and have a great deal of affection for this town.

Hello Vicky, do you have any history on Upton's farm that once lay at the bottom of Duke Street? Who was Hannah Upton...known, I believe, as "Hannah the milk"! Any information would be appreciated. Thank you, Dorothy.

Lorrain Evans Flint
Hi Jane Owen
Yes it is the Lorrain that used to say put more rice in your cup. How are you? Would you believe that I am still in that factory after fifteen years.
Coincidentally, I have an uncle living in New Zealand, Bernard Jones, who left Flint after the second world war to live in Australia but later moved to NZ.He married over there and had five children and one of his daughters he named Lorraine.
Au revoir Jane. Good Luck for the future. Lorrain.

I have worked with the Air cadets in Flint for a number of years and i can say they are some of the most well behaved pleasant kids in UK. Flint has,- and still maintains a bad rep that it does not deserve.

Your entry mentions the old building by the station. Having seen old maps of Flint on the web, this building appears to be a 'goods shunting shed' and the maps show numerous sidings on what is now the car park and a siding across the road from the King's Head, by the footbridge.

Eleanor Tatler off Fflint
Hiya Jane Owen in NZ. Just seen your comments on the net, my computer's been down. I went to your mam's funeral, she had a great send off, fair play. All the line dancers were there in their full regalia, she would have been made up, god bless her. You can bet your bottom dollar they are having a great time up there, Alice Tatler and Joyce Dolman, what a great pair. I miss her so much...I bet you're missing Flint. I left Flint but couldn't wait to come back. I love my home town and will never leave again. Good luck, love Eleanor.
