Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise

Last updated: 20 December 2007

Calling all locals. Did you know you could be related to Hollywood A-list actor Tom Cruise?

Tom's genealogy shows his great-great grandfather emigrated to the US in 1850. The 41-year-old star of Top Gun and The Last Samurai was told he had a Welsh connection on an American TV show which reveals the family trees of the rich and famous. Cruise's real name is Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, and he is said to be descended from many generations of Mapothers living in Wales.

You guys are hilarious, and I can't wait to visit Flint and North Wales this summer. Cheers.

    Ward Harrison, Jeffersonville,
There is only one person on this planet that knows Tom's true genealogical background and that's me. I live across the river from Tom's ancestor's place of residence and that's Louisville, Kentucky. I have been working on Tom's genealogy for 15 years and have access to most of his maternal & paternal records of birth, death, marriage, etc. First off, the most important of my discoveries is the fact that Tom doesn't have a drop of Mapother blood in his line of descent. His GG grandmother, Mary Cruse (Tom changed it to Cruise) was married to a man named O'Mara when Tom's great grandfather, Thomas C. Mapother was born in 1876. She was the widow, Mrs Dillon Mapother when she married O'Mara. For reasons unknown at this time she later changed her son's name from Thomas Cruse O'Mara to Thomas C. Mapother. Both of Tom's parents were born in Louisville and many of their ancestors were living in Louisville as early as 1810. His family tree is very illustrious in the history of Kentucky.

My ancestors are from Flint and our name is Flint. Was it a taken name or is it for real? I like your comments. "Flint sparks when struck"

I saw Tom Cruise in Flint about 15 years ago on Chester road, He was in Rumbelows window on the TV flying a fighter jet. Amazingly I also saw Matthew Broderick the following week in the same shop pretending to be ill so he could bunk off school.

    Mr Amos Flint Historian
What nonsense saying Thomas Cruise is 'off Fflint', I have looked in all of my books and cannot find any reference to a T.Cruise, his grandad, aunty or any other offspring, I have however find a reference to a Alan Pacino !, could this be Al Pacino, star of 'One flew over a Cuckoos nest' and later (casual) trousers inventor.

    Sharon M - Flint
Flint already has celebrity status, football legend Ian Rush. It is nice to know that Tom Cruise is a descendant of Flint but if we all looked at our family trees who knows where or whom our ancestors are from. Flint is not a bad place to live and we are all a friendly bunch, I am proud to say where I come from and my education has not stopped me relishing my professional career. People can only do what they want to do and not what they are told to do.

I always knew he must have been a Flint descendant, the similarity between him and myself in uncanny.

I think flinty definitely has a point.

Does it matter that his great great grandfather was from Flint? He is so rubbish that I haven't heard anyone talk about him. That just shows how nobody really cares.

I saw an interview with Tom Cruise, and he said he saw a Scottish film called Twin Town. Which was set in Swansea. I dont think he even knows where Wales is...

So what if someone from his family was from Flint? Doesn't mean Tom Cruise was from Flint, and if they moved to the US in 1850 then obviously Tom wasn't even born at this time. His great great grandfather was originally from Flint yes. He was no doubt dead when Tom was even born. Tom was not originally from Flint. Leave it as that, thanks.

    Flinty
You are who you are and if you don't like living in Flint there's always somthing you can do about that...MOVE OUT. In my opinion if you've got nothing positive to say about somewhere then much more polite to keep it to yourself. As for Tom Cruise......????????

    Peter from Flint
Yes, it is nice when it is discovered that someone famous has ancestral connections with your home town but we mustn't get too excited about Tom Cruise and his links with Flint. Being a genealogist I know for a fact that the name MAPOTHER has no long term connections with this town. They may have lived here briefly if Mr Cruise's researcher says so though it is not a name I have ever come across in my 25 years as a researcher. I have nothing against the man and I think he is a fine actor but to call him a descendant of Flint is being a little too optimistic.

I know Tom Cruise personally and know he is proud of his Flint heritage. But why do people like Robert have to spoil things. His followers aren't fools (well, not most of them).

    Robert Roberts
You are all fools worshipping this Tom Cruise. He is just a human being like you and me, with some slight talent when it comes to acting. It's because of people like you that makes these celebrities so stupidly and unfairly rich. FOOLS!

    Dave, Flint
Yes, it's great that Tom Cruise's ancestors came from Flint, but are we not getting a little bit ahead of ourselves? They left 150 years ago...I don't really think we can claim ownership of him. Oh, and some of the comments in the local paper when the news broke were quite (unintentionally) funny...like the manager of the sandwich shop in the High Street, saying "If Tom Cruise came in here, I'd make him whatever sandwich he wanted". Erm, as the manager of a sandwich shop don't you do that for everyone? I've never had any of these conversations yet... DAVE: Turkey salad on brown please. MANAGER: pfft! Who do you think you are, Tom Cruise?

    Tim Jones, Fflint
In response to J Henderson's comment about Tom Cruise 'coming down to earth' if he visited Fflint, I would only hope that J Henderson doesn't reside there any more! The best thing about the town of Fflint is that you can't fool the people with any 'holier than though' attitude and snobbery is something which certainly doesn't go down well. Tom Cruise would be welcome, but don't go overboard and put a statue up or something equally as crass!
    Sun Jan 25 16:00:23 2004

    D Jones, Flint
Have to agree with J Henderson there. I think Mr Cruise will be thanking his great, great grandfather on his monutental decision on leaving Flint for Kentucky. I'm still stuck here and it is an awful place. PS. I went to school with a J Henderson too lol.
    Sat Jan 24 03:02:52 2004

    J Henderson
Tom Cruise would really come down to earth if he came to Flint. I had the misfortune to be educated there, and it was some of the worst years of my life.

We are thrilled to be linked to such a huge celebrity icon. I reckon that all his success is based on having such a solid Flint background, it has stood him in good stead!
