Tremeirchion

The people of Tremeirchion, courtesy of David Tanswell

Last updated: 06 October 2008

People from the Denbighshire village produced their own book, 50 Words for 50 Years, to mark the Queen's Jubilee and to record for posterity people's own thoughts about the community. Here's a selection...

Terry Bryer
For people wishing to trace their ancestors who lived in the village, there are copies of births, marriages and deaths registers available in church, as well as a register of graves in the churchyard.

I've been visiting Tremeirchion weekly for the last year and half, ever since meeting the most amazing woman ever! What a lovely community, great walks and scarecrow hunt. A lovely place to bring a family up in safety.

A lovely village with friendly people where there is always a welcome in the local pub, and Don will enlighten any passer-by on the local history.

I am tracing my family tree and know I have relatives from Tremerchion. The Foulkes family lived in Tremerchion in the early 1800s and had 6 children in the village. Would anyone be able to shed any light on the Foulkes family, Mary and Peter? Any details would be gratefully received.

I was a pupil at Ysgol Tremeirchion. And I think it's the best school there is. It has given me so many memories and some that I won't ever forget, for example I was part of the football team that won the league. I think the picture is still up in the Salisbury Arms. I still remember my very first day at the school. They also taught me so much over the years and I have to thank the teachers for doing that. My headmaster was Geraint Roberts, he was the best. Overall I think Tremeirchion is the best place ever, there may not be much to do there but it is a special place to me for so many reasons. I hope the school stays open for many years to come. And I hope to return there many more times in my lifetime.

I think Tremerchion is a lovely village, a great community spirit and always a nice welcome from the locals. A fantastic scarecrow hunt once a year - I love it there.

I am wanting to trace details of my grandparents George E Lewis and Alice Mary Lewis (nee Williams) who were married at St Stephens Church, Bodfari in 1916. I believe my grandmother also worked at Bodfari Post Office.

Hi, does anyone remember Eileen Royle being crowned Miss Tremerichion? I am doing my family tree and would like any info on anyone who remembers her [my mother] or any info on the family.

My Great Grandfather Richard Hughes was born in Tremeirchion. He spent some of his life in Stoke, Staffordshire & some back in Wales. Family are important to me & I've recently started to trace my family tree. Richard's wife was Anne Wakefield & then after Anne's death he married Jane Roberts. I have lots of family relatives etc are you related? I will share my research.

I have just come back fron visting my step daughter who lives not far from Tremeirchion. My ancestors were from Tremeirchion so I had a look round the graves at the church. I was looking for Griffiths. I found the word Cildaugoed on 2 of my Griffiths graves. I have just found this site and a gentleman called Mark had said about Hannah Griffiths marrying John Llewellyn, I have them in my family tree. Is there any way I could get in touch with him?

Mark Llewellyn Hughes from Pembs
My gggg Uncle John Llewellyn was a Master Mariner. He married Hannah Griffiths of Cildaugoed, and ran the farm for a while in the 1870s before it was sold. I wonder if the farm still exists, and whether there are any decendants of the Griffiths still around? Let me know if you can help?

I was a pupil at Ysgol Tremeirchion, 1980-88, and what a great primary school it was. Mr Bryer was the best head teacher ever, also remembering Miss Roberts, Miss Turley, Aunty Ann, Aunty Audrey and also Aunty Sheila. Also Mrs Edwarda and music teacher Mr Williams. Sunday School was also a big part of the community, not only for the children of Tremeirchion, but the children of Rhuallt and the Waen. We went on a number of Sunday School trips to Blaenau Ffestiniog, Southport and Cemelot. All this seem such a long time ago now but what great memories I have. I really miss village life. I did not really appreciate what I had at the time, but I do now.

Our family went to see Prince Charles at Hafod-y-Coed as we lived on the estate owned by Brigadier Mainwaring, Lord Leiutenant of Flintshire, as Tremeirchion was in Flintshire before the boundary change.

My dad was born in Tremeirchion, 1918. Robert Jones, brother Ted, sisters Gwyneth, Enid and Vera. Richard, father, Mary Lloyd, mother, lived at Bryn Awelon. Does anyone have any information that might help with my family tree?

Both my parents attended Tremeirchion School, and I lived at Arllwyn with my mother's parents until I was nearly six. The village has many totally unique features. I'm proud to be part of the Bach Choir, which performs St Matthew Passion, and 2007 Good Friday will be the 44th, I think. It is the most beautiful place on earth.

I went to school in Tremeirchion, and have fantastic memories, of walking down Ffordd faen and the donkey accross the road in the field! Also fond memories of Aunty Sheila and Aunty Ann, mustn't forget Aunty Audrey! Miss Roberts, Miss Turley and Mrs Owen on the piano. Can't forget Mr Roberts with his ghost stories and Mr Williams before him.

Ffynnon Beuno cave, which was excavated by Dr Henry Hicks in 1897. He unearthed the bones of 16 different species of animal, including mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, hyena, elk, wolf and cave lion. One of the flint tools unearthed in the cave was later carbon dated to 38,000 B.C. His findings were detailed in National Geographic magazine in 1898. The bones and flint tools are now housed in the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff and the cave is a protected site on private land.

I have recently found my gggrandfather's family on the 1851 census and they were living at Tanygraig, Graig. I was totally unaware of any Welsh connections, but intend to find out more. His name was Ebenezer Williams, born Dymeirchion (on a later census it says Tremeirchion), his father was William born Cyffilliog and his mother Jane ? born Dymeirchion. I have been told that Dymeirchion is an earlier name for Tremeirchion, is this correct?.

Can anyone help me with my family tree? My great great grandparents were David and Elizabeth Jones and thay lived at Bach y Graig in 1881 with their children Anne, David, Elizabeth, Robert, Susannah and William. They are buried in Tremeirchion churchyard with their daughter Elizabeth. Susannah married Joseph Jones and lived at 'Hazeldene'. They too are buried in Tremeirchion. They had no children and Joseph died in 1927 from Ty Newydd y Graig. I also have records of them living at Pen y Graig & Pen y Graig Fawr. If anyone has any other information about these homes or the family please get in touch. Having been to Tremeirchion on a number of occasions now I have a strong feeling that there may well be other family members still there.

I was a student in the school, I used to walk around Tremeirchion a lot and it's the most fasinating thing I've ever seen, you can see all the wildlife, silence only the birds singing and the lambs calling. It's the most wonderful thing ever!

Tremeirchion is a beautiful place boasting a 900 year old yew, the oldest Welsh bible and is itself so old a settlement that evidence of people living there go back to millenia BC. Formerly called Dinmeirchion, (Din means fortress) it is now called Tremeirchion (Tre meaning town). It is believed that Meirchion was one of Arthur's warriors. There is a cave there that was excavated some time ago and evidence was found of bears and lions, so the fauna there was somewhat different some time ago.

I have grown up in this village and although it isn't the most exciting of places it is a lovely place to live. Very safe and close knit. I am proud to call it my home.

The school is such a special place and the heart not only of Tremeirchion's village but that of Rhuallt too. To have a Welsh language primary supporting the local area is a very special thing. Not only that but it has produced 'characters' that will live long in our memories, Mr Bryer, Miss Roberts, Anti Ann, Anti shelia etc. All wonderful special people.

I would love a shop in Tremeirchion because it would save me going all the way to Denbigh. But Tremeirchion is the best place to live. (Is that fifty words? Probably not!)
Fri Jun 24 11:17:22 2005

Owen, Tremeirchion
Tremeirchion is an ace place to live, there is such a community spirit, and the pub is OK (other than Welsh singing on a Saturday!) but a shop would be nice. Suppose it might be a bit boring if you're not a farmer also.
Wed Jun 1 11:46:29 2005

Nia Parry from Tremeirchion
I think Tremeirchion is the best place to live. It's quiet with lovely views and I love going for a walk on the Graig. Even though I'm only 12 I'm going to make sure that I'll live here for the rest of my life.

Can anyone tell me more about the caves in Tremeirchion and the bones found there?
Tue May 24 10:49:07 2005

Jessica Catherine, Rhuallt/Tremeirchion
I was a pupil at Tremeirchion school, and it was the best experience of my life. They have taught me a lot over the years. Our headmaster was Geraint Roberts and what a good head he was. And I think it is the best school in the world and I'm going to send my kids there.
