Class

Last updated: 22 May 2008

Ysgol Glan Clwyd was Wales' first Welsh language secondary school. It opened 50 years ago in Rhyl before moving to its present location in St Asaph.

I would like to know why one can find no references to St Asaph Grammar School, the school taken over by Ysgol Glan Clwyd. I attended it for two years before Labour had us all moved to the awful secondary school in Prestatyn, where we were taught by teacher training college graduates, rather than the masters who had taught us in St Asaph Grammar School. The former were in the main, very poorly educated and often only one step ahead of the students. In addition, many of us were bullied by neanderthal thugs from the former Ysgol Clawdd Offa. I am aware that the school is very old and would be interested to know its history.

I attended the school from 1979 until 1984. The first year at Kinmel Camp. Good times, though I wish I had a better memory! Anyone out there with photos of this period? I would love to see them.

I was among the first pupils to set foot in Glan Clwyd, which started in the old Emanuel school in Rhyl before taking over the old Epworth site. I was a rebel from the word go and must have driven most of the teachers mad especially Norman Williams who threw me out of his classes with great regularity. However they must have done something right because I landed up in the same career, and retired five years ago as head of Early Years and senior member of staff in charge of Literature (English I am sorry to say) in our local primary school. My husband was also one of the three senior members so we had the education in that school tied up, unfortunately the governing body were not taken by our idea of introducing Welsh to the curriculum, why not they teach them French don't they? So a great big thank you to all my teachers, sorry I was such a pain but I have had a great and interesting career thanks to you.

I was at Ysgol Glan Clwyd Y Rhyl from 1958-1962. I remember my days there very well. Miss Jeffreys was one of my form teachers and we were very afraid of her, she was quite strict but always fair. Mr Haydn Thomas was Head Teacher and Mr Norman Williams Deputy Head. I had only learnt Welsh a short time before going to Glan Clwyd but being there improved my Welsh a lot and still speak it fluently today. My best friend was Judith Jones. I have fond memories of my time there. I was probably one of the earliest pupils when I went there.

Although sadly not realised at the time, undoubtedly the best years of my life 1977- 1982. Killer, Ove, John Morris Jones, Henry Lloyd Jones, Cled, Bryn Jones, Hywel Hughes. All terrific people and numerous more space will not allow. Thank you all.

I can only continue the ongoing praise of Mr John Morris Jones. Though, as many others, I was extremely scared of him in the early years, as I got older I came to respect him and understand that his desire was to make sure every one of his students achieved. I was there in Mr JmJ last year at the school during my GCSE year. Due to his decision to retire at the end of the Christmas term he decided to enter us into our exam early. I passed with a C which gave me extra time to revise other subjects and I can't thank him enough. Hopefully he is enjoying a well deserved retirement! Other great teachers who deserve praise are Mrs Hughes (English) who, as well as being a good teacher, gave me and Richard Allen countless laughs with her constant habit of using the word RIGHT every 4 seconds! Bryn Jones (Sport, Registry teacher) very easy to speak to and supportive throughout my time at the school. A thanks to the eye candy Mrs Elen Marsh Jones (cooking) and Mrs Manon Tudur (Welsh, music). The reason most of us got up to come to school in the morning! Last but not least to Mr Meurig Rhees, a fantastic headmaster who from what I've heard continues to do a fantastic job as headmaster (students think yourselves lucky). A big thanks to all other teachers who looked after in my time there and good look with the school year ahead!

All I remember of John Morris Jones was being told off! And press ganged into shifting some tables and chairs around when we had a new delivery.

I was at Glan Clwyd from 1999-02. My favorite teachers were Mr Jones and Mr Jones, the P.E teachers. I've been travelling for a long time and no matter what, rygbi anywhere else will never compare to Ysgol Uwchradd Glan Clwyd.

I attended Glan Clwyd between 1990 and 1995 and John Morris Jones was my favourite teacher. I was moved up to his set in Maths from Helen 'Hitler' Jones and his teaching methods and motivation changed my life. I will never forget him, but also for a very different reason will never forget Vera Savage... She never encouraged me in music [even though I played Piano and Saxophone!] and said she didn't think I could handle/do Music GCSE!! well I DID do GCSE [even though she only helped her favourites!] and went on to do A'Level... AND a Degree [BMUS in Music] ! AND a PGCE in Secondary Music and am now a Music Teacher. I remember what she was like and consequently NEVER leave anyone out in my classes now...

I remeber John Morris Jones as if 1979 was yesterday - he changed my direction in one afternoon. The end of school term for the summer was my last year at the school and I was due to start Monday as an apprentice carpenter - when Mr Morris discovered this - he said he had something else in mind - by late Friday afternoon, my last Friday at the school - he had me signed up to Aston college for an OND, which pushed me to a degree, and eventually to a Masters - I now work and live in the US - thanks Mr Morris!

I'm in year 7 [2006] now. I was a bit scared at first but now I love it. Mr Dylan Jones is great, so is Mr Lyle. Miss Benett is cool, our head is Mr Reace. He's very kind and generous. The school is being upgraded with a new science lab and toilets. I'm a learner in Welsh but I pick it up fast. I hope I pick it up.

I attended the school from 1961 to 1966 and my sister Janice from 1964 to 1968. I remember climbing Snowdon on a school trip with the geography teacher Edgar Williams. I often wonder where my friends Bronwen, Violet and Gwenda are now. I have lived in Oxfordshire for the last 25 years and visit Wales as often as I can with my family.

I attened Ysgol Uwchradd Y Rhyl, from 1960 to 1965. Mr Thomas was the Head at the time, then Desmond Healy took over, Norman Williams was the Deputy Head, Phillip Lloyd was the History teacher, Edger Williams the Geography teacher, Gilmory Griffiths Music. Mrs Kichener Davies Headmistress, Ian Jones Woodwork, Howel Hughes PE. Those were the best years of my life, except when I had my three sons. I am now a grandmother to three granddaughters & one due June '07.

Remember John Morris Jones? He was a great maths teachers, but feared for his short-temper. When I was at school he was also the careers advisor and the night before my mum and I were due to meet him to discuss 'my future', I regaled her with stories of some of his more colourful outbursts. I think it's fair to say that half the school was afraid of him. But he was perfectly charming...though he could have advised me to take up a more lucrative career!
