Does anybody know of any pictures of the old Queensferry roundabout? I remember as a youngster living in Sandycroft that it was the road that now has the skips on it, next to the old farm. The 'blue metal' or was it green, was walked up to from the road that now is used as the enterance to Makro. I would love to see pictures of this area pre 1978 when I think that the bulldozers moved in and created the flyover that now runs over Queensferry roundabout.

Re buses I must agree with the lady who is annoyed with Arriva. Only last night my daughter was waiting with her friend outside the Leisure Centre for a bus to Flint, the bus driver just DROVE right past her. Keep in mind that these girls are only 15 yrs old (and other kids who were waiting for the bus) the bus wasn't full and it was still in service. I know this is NOT the first time this has happened!

How dare anyone say Deeside is not part of Wales. Most of us are very proud to be Welsh. It is mostly because Countess of Chester Hospital is nearer that so many people around here are 'English' not to mention the enormous amount of people from Liverpool who escaped to the country and only got as far as here. Yes, it's not the most attractive gateway to north Wales but that's down to councils not locals. I for one am very proud of being Welsh and have lived in Deeside for all 35 years of my life. I recently walked down Shotton's main road and had cockneys behind me shouting "all Welsh are sheep sh*****s innit". We have put up with this prejudice for many years so why if it's such a terrible place are there so many immigrants here. Deeside is Welsh and will remain so. If it goes over to England I for one will leave.

LOL Nathan's, Deeside note.Err you're obviously English, and not from here, and moved here. Deeside is a border area, and is fine being Welsh, the trouble is people coming here and changing stuff, you can keep Chester and the Wirral thanks. To quote the Australian Prime Minister on immigrants in 2005, 'You have the right to leave'. Deeside has some major industries, Deeside Industrial Park, Corus, Airbus etc and all I hear is Scouse, Manc and most recently Southerners' accents. People come here because it's a nice place and change stuff and think we should conform to the English way. The signs should be in Welsh first English second, you would not say anything in France, Spain etc or would you?

I have noticed on many occasions in the Taliesin Avenue area a man and lady walking their black and white dog. What's the problem with that you may ask? Nothing except that the man and lady walk in front of the dog and the dog is not on a lead and runs in and out of gardens. This dog is not on a lead and is doing its mess in people's gardens. The man is walking ahead oblivious.

Hi, I asked Connah's Quay Town Council if they were aware of any plans to move the war memorial. They say there are no plans to move it, and they also checked with the chair of the local British Legion & Interservices Committee who organise the annual Remembrance Service at the memorial in Connah's Quay.

Does anyone know any details about the plans to move the War Memorial out of the way in Shotton/Connah's Quay? I have heard that it is to be put in a memorial garden behind the supermarket. Is this to make it easier for vandalsto deface it? What are they thinking of? I hope I am wrong."

They have promised us this skate park to be finished by 2009 and look at it, there has been nothing added onto it for about 4 or 5 months. They said they will start doing it again after the new year but there hasn't been any sign of them building onto it. They have promised us this skate park so they cannot just stop because some local people said to stop construction, the kids that are waiting for this are getting tired of this promise so when is it going to be made, now or never?

Hi Paula, I just looked at your posting there, YES I remember Styles night club, I'd say if you're the Paula I know then you have probably guessed who this is by now. I had my first proper drink in Styles, had my first proper dance there at the teenage discos. I used to love the Pepper Pot as well (those were the days). I was even in Styles the day before I was due with my daughter over 11 years ago. We used to get in free sometimes as well, it was who we knew at the time. When I go home visiting I miss being able to go Styles, it was the only good meeting spot (for all those naughty things we all used to get up to). Still I miss it and I miss home sometimes too, Shotton that is.

Nathan, I agree with you, but I'm afraid our opinion is an unfashionable one just now. Many people equate the geographical area of 'Wales' with the language 'Welsh', but it is not correct to do so. Only about 20 percent of people in Wales use that language, leaving the majority of us using English (and happy to do so). Having bi-lingual road signs and giving Welsh names to streets is a completely alien culture to Deeside. I even occasionally see Welsh language 'public information' notices on the billboards in town, where I bet not more than 1 in 100 passers-by understands them. What a waste of public money for the sake of political correctness! As for the attitude of some posters, to suggest we move away if we don't like what we are seeing, well that is just in lieu of any logical argument on their side. I was born and raised here, and in common with many others, I don't like the attempted 'Cymricisation' (is that a word?) of the area, and feel no need to apologise for stating so on these boards.

Didn't it used to be obligatory for the Jubilee (blue) bridge to be raised for one day each year to exercise some sort of "rights of way"? I do recall it being opened, after lots of notices, one New Year's Day some years ago.

Parking outside schools, do these parents have no consideration for local residents! They cause nothing but obstructions Mon-Fri. What will it take before something is done about this? A child getting knocked down perhaps. Well, they'd only have themselves to blame. York Road School in particular.

Although I wasn't born in the Quay I lived there most of my life. I am English born and so is one of my brothers. We moved there in '68. My youngest brother was born in C.Q. and considers himself Welsh. I can never remember when we were growing up this anti English/anti Welsh feeling. It seems really to have come about over the last 10 years. My friends are probably a 50/50 split English/ Welsh. I can't ever remember anything apart from a bit of banter re-footy or rugby results. I just remember we were quite happy saying we came from Deeside. I don't know why it has changed. Let's face it if we go back a few generations let alone a few centuries nobody is pure English/Welsh stock. Most people in the UK are a mixture of some races, be it a mixture of any of the home nations or further afield. Blame can probably be apportioned to both sides. I know some English people who say things that make me cringe, but also some quite nasty things coming in the other direction. I was told by a shop steward that I as taking a job away from a 'good' Welsh person, as I was English. The irony was, it was an English owned company we worked for. I think there are more important things to worry about than who was born which side of a border. If you look at your passport you are neither English or Welsh anyway, they are only principalities. You all come from the UK. As I said, I find it quite sad really. I have since emigrated to Canada anyway, where they don't know the difference between any of the home countries, they either call you a limey or a kipper!

As an Englishman who is both fortunate to be married to a Welsh girl and live in Wales, I feel that Nathan's comments do nothing to improve English/Welsh relations. My wife and I will be actively encouraging our children to speak Welsh when they start school. If you lived in France you'd learn French so what's the difference except for laziness?

Taking on board Nathan's comments, regarding moving Deeside into England. I'm sure Nathan would be better off buying a house in England, it's not too far away. If he's unhappy about the culture, the history, the language, the education, then leave it all behind for the Eutopian dream of England. That way we can run our small and diverse country without him. Some of us are proud to live in Wales, and strive for our Welsh identity, and it's comments like those from Nathan that we have to battle. We have resources in Wales, and they are, to my mind, better managed than those in England, and we don't hold the arrogance that the English dominate the world.... save that stuff for the football field please! What a dreamer... 'Today Deeside; Tomorrow the World'?

Yes, as a Welsh person who loves Wales and speaks the language fluently I would say to Deeside - GO! As a supposed gateway to North Wales the area is shabby and a minority of people who live there cannot be bothered to learn even the courtesy words in Welsh. I don't think that Wales would mind so yes - GO!

"The buses are driven very agressively and the drivers are often abusive. ...Arriva refuse to acknowledge the problem, and the police and council say there is nothing they can do."
Actually there is something you can do: take as much information you can from the bus (reg number, fleet number, service number, time of day). The more you have, the less the bus company can come back with an anodyne answer like "we have insufficent information to progress with this complaint". When you write to complain to the company as to their employee's behaviour - always say you are keeping copies of the correspondence for the attention of local newspapers and whichever council body oversees the buses. In Manchester, action I helped initiate over a poor service ultimately led to the service provider losing the route - it passed to another operator. Talk to your local councillor for assistance here. It's what he/she is paid for. But what they like least is bad publicity: do not be shy to use the threat of going to the local papers, or to BBC Wales or Granada or whoever, with your story. Make sure the bus company is ABSOLUTELY in no doubt you have done/will do this. It's amazing how often this provokes a positive response! Good luck, and don't let yourself be intimidated.

Even though Deeside is in north Wales I don't even think that the people of Deeside class themselves as living in north Wales. I most certainly don't! I think that Deesdie would benefit from leaving Wales and becoming England. The area we live is so close to the border that being in Wales we miss out. The closest main hospital to us is the Countess of Chester - in England. This causes problems for the people of the area for operations etc because of the postcode lottery. It's not as if we are distinctively Welsh, we don't have a Welsh accent but more of a Chester/Cheshire one and the closest main shopping centre to us is Chester. The council must waste so much money on the signposts in the area, they have the English and then the Welsh. Why is the Welsh needed? I doubt that many in the area could pronounce it never mind understand it! School children in the area are also at a disadvantage. They are forced to learn the 'dying language' (Welsh) when they could be focusing on more important subjects. They even have to sit the same GCSE examination as other schools in 'Welshy' Wales. So in conclusion MAKE DEESIDE ENGLAND. I'd like to hear what you think so please leave comments.

I think the problem on the Quay hill is down to car owners just simply not having anywhere to put their cars. Nowadays, most houses have a car - some have two and all the spaces in side streets are taken by the houses in the side streets. The Swan pub has usually got a couple in front of it to keep them off the road and as many people as possible get in the layby on the Quay hill (used by main roaders and flats alike). It would be a bit better if the people with driveways used them, there are a few culprits in places like Hamilton Road (which is where I have seen some of the most atrocious parking done). Putting bin sacks out the night before doesn't bother me, it's when they are out for a week that things get mucky. And what is it with the Quay hill these days. I opened my window last night as it was roasting and all I heard from 7pm till gone midnight was constant swearing and threats of attack ("what did you effing say?").

I agree with Doris. I go running and cars on pavements are a big hazard. Especially on the quay hill and along the bottom road in Flint. It will only take some one opening a car door at the wrong time for someone to be badly injured or worse. Surely someone needs to address this issue.

Do car owners really have to take up so much pavement when parking their cars? I live in Dee Road, Connah's Quay, and have experienced problems both as a motorist and a pedestrian. At the top of Dee Road close to the junction with Morley Avenue a number of cars park on both sides of the road. Sometimes it is impossible to pass on the pavements and people are forced to walk in the road. I have driven around the corner at night to see people in dark clothing (barely visible) walking in the middle of the road. To add to this problem on the night before the refuse collection people are putting their rubbish on the pave! ment for collection the following day which adds to the problem. As a pedestrian I had no choice but to walk in the road with my dog. A boy racer came hurtling round the corner and I found myself pinned up against one of these cars. Surely this is a serious accident waiting to happen.

The skatepark in Wepre is a fantastic thing, another place where children of pretty much all ages can gather and enjoy a social activity together and out of the way of anyone's houses or cars or other dangers. I have grown up without the amazing outdoor skateparks and have caused a nuisance of myself all over the north Wales area by trying to skate places that weren't meant to be skated. The size of the skatepark is not an issue as it is by the park itself which can be seen for miles around. There's noise there all day every day anyway with cars coming and going so there's no problem there. When this skatepark is built bring your child down on his/her bike or blades and give it a try. STOP thinking that it will cause problems, all it will do is be a different activity some kids can undertake to stop themseleves getting into trouble, which is half the problem, being bored is the main reason for trouble causing. I know, I've been there, we all have. Can't wait for the launch day, the sceptics will be silenced mark my words.

I think something should be said about driving through the whole of Deeside which badly needs a bypass inspite of the new bridge which is under used. I have noticed for some time that the local people will allways let you on to the main road, from side streets etc. They are the most friendly and obliging people I have come across in my drives all over the British Isles.

There is a colourful plaque unveiling at Ewloe castle, this Friday at 11.30. There will be several dignatories present alongside a band. The sight at Ewloe is of national importance because in 1157 the English army was on its way to Gwynedd to 'destroy Wales'. The Welsh army ambushed the elite knights of the English king and overwhemled them, almost taking the King himself. It was a major victory. On Friday members of The Cambria band will play some music to addd to the atmosphere and I'll be suitably dressed as Owain Gwynedd. It is hoped that this will herald the recognising and protecting of many battlefields across Wales.

I have been a resident of Shotton now for a number of years, and although I wasn't born here, it's very sad to hear the "locals" slagging it off. There are so many more worse places you could be living in. Obviously the town has changed dramatically over the years, but I think it's a pleasant little town. At first I thought the people were a bit "defensive" and "hostile" but as time has gone on, I have got to know that the people are cool and it's just a cross they bear, battle scars from the hard years of the steelworks etc. Shopping here isn't as bad as everyone makes out. We don't have a great deal of choice, granted, but what shops there are here, you can do a "comfortable" shop and if you were here in Shotton over Christmas, the town and the shops were as busy as any other town in Flintshire and the Christmas trees/lights were lovely. We have good rail links for the north Wales coast and to the mainline stations such as Wrexham, Chester, Manchester, Liverpool etc. The bus services are good and you can go to other towns with ease. We have a community hospital, something that most towns in England certainly don't have any longer. I think we are very lucky here in Shotton.

Nick the redevelopment of Ffordd Llanarth is long overdue. Connah's Quay has in recent years just become a housing estate with few shops meaning people having to go further afield to spend money. Anything like this that improves local shops and facilities is great news and hopefully will mean less travelling for local people who currently go further afield to shop.

I wonder if anyone can help with what I think is quite a serious issue. I live, as most people, on a housing estate in Connah's Quay. Can someone tell me how if I needed the fire brigade in the middle of the night, they could get down my street? The numbers of cars parked all over the roads now is just getting beyond a joke. I struggle sometimes to get past badly parked cars and I just wonder how on earth would a huge fire engine get through. Is it possible for our local station to do street surveys and advise people on parking or even something in the local press? Any thoughts or comments?

Re Shotton Xmas Lights, I have lived in Connah's Quay now for 9 years and I must admit this year the Christmas lights are lovely. But yes, why no lights in Shotton, there used to be some wrapped round all the lamposts, where did they go? It's a mystery...

I think the Shotton shop owners contribute to the lights in Shotton, in Connah's Quay you get a Christmas tree at the bottom of Wepre Drive and some lights on the civic. If the shops at the bottom of Wepre Drive would do something, a tree in the bowling green would be nice, as well as the one at the bottom of Wepre.

Can anyone please explain why as taxpayers of Connah's Quay we never seem to get the same benefits as our neighbours in Shotton? Is it too much to ask for a few xmas lights? When you pass through Shotton into the Quay it's like entering the black hole of Calcutta! Could it be that my tax contribution pays for the lights in Shotton? Ah well, no doubt we will get lights over the festive period thanks to the utilities companies. I believe we are due for some more roadworks some time soon on the Quay hill....red, amber, Green - quite festive colours I suppose!

Re skatepark for Wepre; Why is it that every time the council try to make something for the teens of Deeside there is loads of opposition? We are always hearing of the bad element in the teens and then judging all teens the same. How would dog owners like it if they where judged on only the IRRESPONSIBLE ones who leave dog foul on our pavements or maybe caravan owners considered to be the same as "travellers" and considered to leave a mess where ever they go? I have lived near Wepre Park all my life, and I am happy to bring my children up here, but if people block all activities for the youth of Deeside, they will make their entertainment, and without direction, they could make mistakes. Next time you pull down a group of people as being irresponsible, law breakers, first look at your own peers and say would I like to be "judged on them".

Flintshire Council and Planning don't take any notice of the people who have to live in the area, and have to put up with their follies! The Leisure Centre is another folly - does not do anything for the community which pay rates towards it, and all we get is mostly outsiders using it, and causing mayhem there and in the area every Friday night or when there is something on. Children from all areas of the North West turn up there.

As we all know travelling through Shotton is a nightmare, it has got to be the worst town in the country to pass through. Flintshire Council Planning, have made problems everywhere around Flintshire and got it so wrong everywhere, from moving bus stop to the middle of the road and not using the laybys, to bridges that don't work, to allowing toxic and noisy units next to homes. So judging by their track record we can only imagine the terror and mayhem that will happen with the latest plan to widen the A494 and the off spins from it! Where will it end? North Wales is already infamous for its speed cameras, its OTT CC Brunston, who obviously thinks he is right and everyone else is wrong. Maybe the Council Planners will if not already also be infamous for the worst planning in the country.

Are you in favour of the plans for a skatepark to be built next to the children's park at Wepre Park? I see a group of people turned out to make their feelings known when councillors turned up this week for a site visit. Apparently, 850 people have signed a petition against the plans. I thought the skatepark at Flint Pavilion - closer to civilisation that the planned Wepre skatepark - had been widely regarded as a success - but I'm happy to be corrected. What do you think?

I found this great resource whilst searching around for Deeside community websites so will add a few words just to let people know of some recent developments regarding our use of the internet. (Note I will not be able to respond on here [BBC Site] but will do soon on our Community Portal). North Wales Police are soon to launch a "Community Portal" on the internet. We are the first police service area to do so and Deeside is to be one of the pilot districts. I will release all the details in the local press soon. Basically we will have news, views, blogs and a community forum for all to use. The discussion forum will be ward based so that we can use the powerful medium to assist in the great community work going on in the area. Importantly community police officers will have another form of contact with the people in the locality. Clearly they won't be tied to the screen as they need to be on the streets but will be able to embrace the power of the internet and use it to assist in communicating with community. This can only be a good thing. We held a NPP (Neighbourhood Policing Panel) today (29/05/07) in Queensferry, though there were not a great deal of people there we had enough to determine a local action plan for the Community Beat Manager who will take the discussed and agreed priorities forward. We were supported by both a Town and a County Councillor, which was great to see and they were able to assist with both providing support and ready answers to concerned members of the community. We will publish the details of the plan and what we are doing to tackle the issues on the new Community Portal in July when it goes live. The plan is live now, but soon we will be able to get it out almost instantly to all those who are fortunate enough to have internet access. We need more people to engage with us on Neighbourhood Policing Panels, it's your area, let us know what we can do for you. If we can't do it we know someone who can assist. I, together with the local Community Beat Manager, will make sure that the right people get to know about the relevant issues in the area and together we will do our best to address them. Details of meetings are published in the local press as well as posters and leaflet drops.

Re Kerry - Bus Problems. I travel over 10,000 miles per year by bus and have recently been on the route passing Kerry's estate. Not many estates have three buses each way per hour, so it isn't hard to identify! I'm no apologist for the company, but it run thrice per hour, along roads with more parked vehicles than most, and keeps to time despite a demanding timetable. But, if traffic conditions are as severe as I saw recently, more time should be allowed for this section of route, and I don't think that one or two minutes is enough, either. Add a full five minutes, and then stop to pick up time after leaving the estate at some reasonable point with a bus lay-by (not on the main road for preferance). Of course, I remember when buses had conductors, who would grumble and "sort out" any driver whose vigorous driving style made them fall over or stagger in the isle. Perhaps it is this vigorous driving style which drivers now unconsciously employ, to the detriment of alighting passengers and other road users? It seemed so when I visited Shotton recently. Please, Arriva, take note. We don't want to lampoon the drivers if the company schedule is too tight, but care should be taken on all sides, and that must include driving style and awareness.

Arriva Customer Services
We are concerned to read about Kerry's experiences of our services in the Connahs Quay area. If she would like to contact our customer services team on 08701 20 10 88, with details of specific incidents, we would be happy to investigate further on her behalf.

I live in the middle of a large housing estate in Connahs Quay and we have 3 Arriva buses an hour in each direction, travelling along very windy roads through the estate. I have been forced to make emergency stops or mount the kerbs on numerous occasions to avoid collisions with buses taking the corners on the wrong side of the road at excessive speeds. One incident resulted in me having panic attacks when driving after a bus hit me. It took 3 weeks to repair the damage to my car. The buses are driven very agressively and the drivers are often abusive. One was even heard to shout 'Move you ******* car or I'll ram it out the way. I don't own the bus so I don't care about any damage, do you?'I think it's disgraceful and dangerous, and I know this feeling is echoed by most of the residents along the bus route, but Arriva refuse to acknowledge the problem, and the police and council say there is nothing they can do.

I think Shotton is looking a lot better, nicer shops and pavements. I have never been mugged or seen any menacing chavs and I have lived here for 30 years. Chester is 10mins away, Wrexham 20mins, Liverpool 30mins and loads of employment and if it's such a terrible dump why are house prices so high - certainaly higher than Flint, Holywell and compares well with most areas of the country.

Pauline Hickey, Queensferry
I am on the Committee of the Queensferry War Memorial which was registered as a Grade 2 listed building in 2005. Unfortunately this building is falling into disrepair and we are raising funds to renovate and update the facilities. If anyone has any old photographs of the building or any stories to tell of its past use etc, we would be interested to hear from you.

Thge whole of Deeside should be handed over to the North Koreans to use as a nuclear bomb testing site. I doubt if anyone would notice the difference in a before and after picture.
