Among the most recognisable features of Chirk are the Viaduct & Aqueduct. Thomas Telford built the aqueduct - half in England, half in Wales - over the River Ceiriog between 1796 -1801. It's 70ft tall and has 10 spans. The railway viaduct, added in 1846, stands 30ft above Llangollen Canal. Telford was the agent for the canal and which is how he came to build the viaduct along with Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which is considered to be his best work.

Also featured among the contributors' photos above is Chirk Castle. Elsewhere on this site, you can also find Then & Now photos of Chirk, showing town centre scenes including the church & Hand Hotel.
