I have recently had a booklet through the door about Buckley I thought was pretty good - informative and nice to read. But the part about 'Buckley caters well for its residents having two major national retailers', Somerfield and Ethel Austin - that's a joke. Somerfield's way down in the list of food retailers. Ethel Austin not on any list at all. Whoever wrote this could they please tell the Buckley people where they can buy a tidy suit, ties, shirt and shoes, ask the women of Buckley where they buy their clothes, (come to think of it, I have not seen any councillors in Ethel Austin's buying their clothes for the Mayor's ball!).

As an ex manager of Buckley Town twice why doesn't someone invest some cash in the club ie Castle Cement, Whitleys, Tivoli or another local business? They have a good set up and deserve a chance in the Welsh League. Come on all you Buckley money men you can't take it with you. Dig deep and help your hometown club.

Having a browse on old t'internet and found this page. Brings back a lot of memories for me. Wonder if anyone remembers me from behind the bar at the Lane End club? I worked there for about 7 years until me and me two kids moved back 'up north' in '92 just before Christmas.

I see there is an adult information shop due to open on Buckley Cross. I don't know what service this will provide, maybe I shoud go there and ask. But I'e a good idea in my head what it will end up as.

Re Mrs Individual, you say that you want to revive Lane End, you have got a job on your hands. No one will help, least of all the councillors. They just hope everything will go away - they will do nothing, only spend money on things that no-one needs.

Re: The Pied Bull pub. My dad Ernie had the butchers shop next to the "Bull" until 1974. Behind the shop there were two adjoining stables to accommodate four horses in each complete with hay racks, floors with drainage in them and a hay loft above. The brewery made safe the building c1966 lowering it one storey with abestos roof. I went to Elfed School 1959-64, any of my old school friends still around?

Hope you all saw Fishlock's Wild Tracks last night on Buckley and surrounding areas, it made me proud to be a true Buckleyite and also to appreciate what our area has to offer!

A footy fan from Buckley
Is there anyone out there who can help? Buckley Town Football Club is a long running and successful club with a Committee and friends who over the past couple of years have worked relentlessly to make the gound and amenities one of the best (if not the best) in Wales. However, what we now lack is not only money but some support and enthusiasm from people willing to help us either by joining the Committee or to come up with some ideas for fundraising as the club needs money to allow us to function. Buckley Town F.C. is proud of its heritage and we need people who like us who would be proud to be part of the club. If you are interested please contact us (details are on the club website) or maybe come along to one of our games. Come on you Buckley-ites!

Totally unrelated comment. Am a Buckley Girl thru and thru and living close to Lane End. There are a lot of good shops there now. Check out Nev's Butchers, half the price of stewing steak compared to other localities. My mum remembers Lane End as having a real community of shops etc til the early 1960s. My quest is to revive Lane End as a community within itself!

Having moved out of Buckley nearly 20 years ago, I'm still a regular visitor to see family and friends, and I've seen lots of change, some good, others not. Good Points: (1) The link road (saw too many kids knocked down on the cross). (2) The public baths. (3) Royal Buckley Town Band. (4) The Library. (5) The Tiv. (6) The Common. (7) Legion. (8) Fire Station. (9) Train Station. (10) Local Post Office. (11) You still have the Jubilee. An odd list? maybe, but all of the above have disappeared from my 'new' local community over the last 10-yrs, be thankful you still have them. Now the Bad (nostalgic) Points: (a) The launderette opposite the baths was replaced by a hairdressers. (b) Dave's music shop has gone. (c) Where the hell did the Foundry go? (d) What happened to the Ponderosa? (e) The Pool Hall was replaced by an Indian Restaurant. (f) A whole housing estate suddenly appeared along the dirty mile. (g) they put traffic lights on Bannel Bridge! (h) they built a church at top of Lyme Grove, why? (i) They built houses on playing fields opposite Princes Avenue? (who remembers the car that sank into a pit that opened over night!) (j) who the hell approved that monstrosity at Tunnel Cement! (k) The muppets on the council. (l) The druggies getting their methadone behind the chemists in the morning. (m) Too many charity shops. (n) Too many estate agents. (o) Too many fast food shops. (p) No real police presence, but they've got traffic wardens? The list goes on. Buckley will inevitably expand even more over the next 20 yrs, look at all the green space around it on google.maps. It's up to you to decide what fills those gaps.

I think it is a disgrace that the thatched cottage on Chester Road has been demolished. Why didn't some organisation, FCC, Welsh Assembly, step in and preserve/restore it as a small museum of Buckley? Another thing, all the brickyards/potteries we had and not a chimney left in their memory.
Tue Dec 9 10:26:15 2008

The Rolt
The oldest pub in Buckley is the Shamrock, fomerly known as The Pied Bull. It was a coaching house in the 1700s providing accommodation and stabling for travellers on stagecoaches en route to Ruthin and Anglesey. Confirmation may be found in the County records at the Shire Hall, Mold.
Tue Nov 25 11:11:07 2008

Brian Bennett, Buckley
Kev from Buckley asks which is the oldest pub in Buckley. I would guess that the Trap. {Hope and Anchor} must be the oldest. Certainly the building. REF. Jonathon Catheral's house in the late 1700s. When it became a licensed premises is unknown. Other pubs in contention must be the Blue Anchor, Cross Keys, Black Horse, Black Lion. I can't find any thing in concrete.

About Councillor Wholley's statement in the Evening Leader about him saying that he could not see people passing Broughton park, Tesco Mold, Asda Queensferry to shop in Buckley. Can't he see that the people know that, and they want a tidy shop in Buckley, but while the likes of him are on the council we can forget it. Don't they care about Buckley?
Mon Nov 17 08:15:21 2008

Re:- Indiana Todd. I have never heard of the cleft chin being referred to the "The Buckley Chin" or of "The Buckley Forehead". I've asked around some elderly Buckley people and they have never heard these sayings before. Any further information about these sayings would be interesting.
Mon Nov 3 08:37:24 2008

Indiana Todd
Proud Buckley from Indiana, USA, here. I'm wondering about the chin. Is the cleft chin something you have? (Cleft chins, "The Buckley Chin", are hereditary in my family.) I've also seen the term "The Buckley Forehead" used, although I always just considered my forehead a consequence of pattern baldness. Comments are welcome, and I thank you in advance.

Last Friday my daughter's boyfriend who is a good hardworking lad was laid off from work. On Saturday he dropped his wallet whilst getting out of his car. It was a good couple of hours before he realised it was missing. It was found still by his car. However, we would really like to thank the person who not only stole £200 from it but also 34p in loose change for their neighbourly spirit, after all, they were kind enough to make sure he got his wallet back by throwing it back on the floor where they found it.

I can't believe they're actually considering this [supermarket]. We like our little community. First they have built flats (still in development) and now a flamin' supermarket! I mean there's already a Somerfield - what more can they do?! OK, I guess there's too many takeaways and too many teenagers. Maybe if we had somewhere to hang around then we would stop vandalising! So council, you've found the answer to the vandalism problems and drugs - more places to hang out. BTW, I'm only 11 and I have a right to voice my opinion.
Fri Oct 17 09:00:28 2008

Kellie from Buckley
I love Buckley but I think everyone has forgotten about Lane End. All we have is Nev the butchers who is great but we are overrun with take aways. We need more shops down Lane End. We have our own little community down here and need more local shops.

Don't the people of Buckley have anything to say? They have the means to voice their opinion, but seldom do. Come on, get writing - let the people know what you are thinking. If you have something to say, say it!

Is the land where this supermarket chain is going to build on big enough to sustain a tidy shop because we need something really substantial to cater for the needs of the buckley people? Not some little corner shop...

Tradesman's wife, Buckley
I notice a lot of renovation works being carried out in and around Buckley, i.e Prince of Wales Court, roadworks in Hawarden and I wonder why so many out of area contractors have been drafted in to do these works. Surely the work should be offered to local tradesmen and there are enough more than qualified persons who would welcome the work in these uncertain times as the credit crunch is rendering many local firms close to bankruptcy. Allocation for this work should be offered locally. I have never seen these works advertised so how can local firms submit tenders?

Buckley Duck is spot on. It's about time some local councillors stopped saying one thing face to face and something different to the press. We should all be after the same thing - a new health centre for the people of Buckley.

Belmont school site for the proposed new health centre. Support this site or get nothing from the Welsh Assembly. It's your choice. Unfortunately recent press comments are far from accurate. Jubilee Road is too expensive to purchase. Fact!

What are the Buckley councillors going to do now, that Somerfield are being taken over by the Co-op, that means Buckley will have only one food shop, what are you going to do? Bury your head in the sand and let all things pass you by which you seem to be very good at doing? Come on do something to help the people of Buckley, that's what you are supposed to be doing. Pull your fingers out.
Tue Aug 5 10:29:56 2008

Come on you Buckley people, you have a nice place to go to now that the old Albert Hall has opened up again. Try it, you may like it. Dance Academy that's its name now. Hope to see you there.

As a council taxpayer I consider myself as part of an agreement [contract] for services. If I fail in my part of this contract I think I would be contacted for breach of contract [ie non payment]. So, if the council fail to honour their part of the agreement [contract], will I be reimbersed accordingly [ie waste disposal collection].

We've been blogging about the road layout and how they've been changed back due to being so unpopular
Thu Jul 17 15:24:47 2008

Stuart Pryce, Buckley
I see the road markings at the traffic lights in Buckley have been changed back to the original markings after exactly 1 week. I wonder how much this cost the taxpayer?
Wed Jul 16 11:10:51 2008

Lane-Ender
More idiots at the traffic lights, that's all we need. Why change it? Who makes these decisions? As for the cop-shop, well, let's face it, they never did answer the door. There is nowt we can do duck to make Buckley a more user-friendly place because no-one wants to listen, least of all the council.
Mon Jul 14 08:09:12 2008

Stuart Pryce, Buckley.
I agree with "Buckley dweller" regards Buckley council. The road markings have been changed at the taffic lights so that the right hand lane is RIGHT ONLY to Buckley Cross and the left hand lane straight on to Brunswick road AND left into Mill Lane. This would leave us with one empty lane and one lane always full. But only after one day motorists are using the right only lane to go straight accross, thus causing near accidents already.
Fri Jul 11 10:09:24 2008

Buckley dweller
Re chappy, I agree with you. Don't the councillors know that Buckley is the biggest town in Flintshire and has the worst amenities of them all? Going to build 300 new houses and nowhere for them to shop only out of town - good thinking councillors - keep up the bad work.
Wed Jun 25 08:34:11 2008

Chappy
Now that we have had the council elections, same old faces, same old ideas. Lets start thinking of getting some tidy shops. We all haven't got cars to go to ASDA, Queensferry; TESCO, Mold; or Broughton Park. Lets have a supermarket in Buckley. The food shops that we have are a joke. Come on councillors pull your fingers out - we are waiting.

Gaz, London (Ex Buckley)
I grew up in Buckley and moved away a couple of years ago down to London. Whilst I love it down in the big smoke, I do miss Buckley and look forward to the couple of times a year that I can get back up to visit my folks and catch up with old mates. I've just seen a picture of the opening of the new project at the Flash and clocked what the policeman in the photo was wearing - what on earth do they look like? Down in London you still see the traditionally dressed Bobby's everywhere - I'm not too impressed with what Buckley's police are now wearing!

Thursday 12th June 2008 will see the official opening of The Flash 'Our Community is Our Backyard' Project. People are invited to arrive from 10.15 am onwards where refreshments will be served at the Bistre Church Community Hall. At 10.30am there will be a blessing by Rev Martin Batchelor, Vicar of Bistre. Blue Stage Performing Arts School will be performing a puppet act which tells the story of The Flash. Dr Brian Gibbons AM Minister for Social Justice will conduct the official opening ceremony. Tree planting ceremonies will be carried out.

Here's a press release we received this morning:
Carl Sargeant, AM for Alyn and Deeside, will be joining the Minister for Social Justice and Local Government to celebrate the official opening of the 'Our Community is Our Backyard' project in Buckley, on Thursday.
The Flintshire Neighbourhood Watch Association, which is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government, won the public vote in the People's Millions contest on ITV for a BIG Lottery Fund award with their pitch to spend the winning cash on a project to rejuvenate a piece of natural wasteland in Buckley to provide a family and wildlife area.

Tue Jun 10 08:48:29 2008

Lisa, Buckley
Do not build the Health Centre on the Elfed pitches, this is one of only 2 green spaces left in Buckley (the common as well). That Skate Park was a waste of money, it's covered in grafitti and kids just hang around there skiving school, smoking etc, but it was to be expected wasn't it? If there's surplus money in the budget why can't residents be allowed to vote on what we want done with it? Who wanted a skate park? Nice Price is great but make it bigger please! Somerfield is too expensive, Tesco or Asda would be better. I would shop in Buckley then, but at the moment I cannot get everything I need from the Nice Price or Jones & Price.
Mon Jun 2 09:27:38 2008

Chappy
About the police station closing, why have one at all? The police are sighted as often as UFOs in Buckley unless you are waiting outside the police station to see them going for their breakfast or dinner across the road the traffic warden uses as a canteen.
Tue May 27 09:02:37 2008

Theresa, Buckley
Don't know why we need police station in Buckley or maybe it's for the local police to have their lunch and cuppa. It isn't very often you see any police on the streets in Buckley?
Thu Apr 17 11:32:13 2008

Gary Williams, The Netherlands
It's quite strange when you leave Buckley and now currently living in the Netherlands I long for the days when I hear 'owld duck'. Whenever I get on the plane to come home and visit I get a really warm feeling that just gets stronger the nearer I get. There may be many things wrong with Buckley but there are lots of positive things too, like honesty and true values. What you see with Buckleyites is what you get. It is true what they say...you don't miss it until it's gone!
Fri Apr 4 10:03:50 2008

Glyn Astbury Drury
The Health Centre is in a perfect location, why don't you knock it down and build a new one where it is? You could use Mobiles temp as they did at Wrexham Maelor. In this day and age they could do the work in 12 months...or is this too simple a solution for the Council?
Mon Mar 31 09:55:29 2008

Kev from Buckley
What is the oldest pub in Buckley?
Mon Mar 17 09:57:56 2008

Counter closure Buckley Police Station. This is a disgrace. We are paying an increasing percentage of our council tax to finance the police to maintain their services to the public. The police however, whilst taking the increased revenue are in the process of reducing the service offered to us all. We must all complain about this erosion of our services.
Tue Mar 11 09:38:17 2008

Apologies for using this avenue for sad news but I would like to inform the many people those who knew my father Cyril Wilcock (Don Keeley's Garage in Mill Lane) that Sid, as many knew him, sadly passed away last Friday. It was peaceful and at 89 he had a good and full life. To all who did know him, thank you for being his friend, he really was a good old soldier and at least we were able to make his last days as comfortable as was possible. Regards to all in good old Buckley, happy memories of growing up there.
Mon Mar 10 08:59:27 2008

What's this I hear Buckley cop shop to close? I thought it had years ago. Where are all the police? They are not seen in Buckley so why have a police station?
Mon Mar 10 08:49:28 2008

Blake from Buckley
I think that Buckley is getting worse than it was as they have started to make flats and big building which is going to make more tourists which will be harder to get around. I also think that the Tiv would be good as a cinema, not a pub.
Mon Mar 3 08:08:27 2008

Dan
Jane, how is it that "It's all money going out of Buckley"? The majority of the working population of Buckley don't work in Buckley, they work in places like Airbus (Broughton) etc...and they spend their disposable income in places like Broughton Park. The majority of people commute to work, so the money is coming out of the town, and is being spent out of the town, so not much money at all is leaving Buckley. Somerfield and Co-Op are both national companies and are surely the two biggest retailers by way of food, drink etc, so none of that money would be staying in Buckley anyway, even if everyone shopped there!
Mon Feb 18 09:59:24 2008

Jane, Buckley
I have lived in Buckley all my life, they're just mad on building residential homes, what about commercial? We desperately need shops why won't they let shops come here? I don't drive but I don't shop in Buckley so people with cars must go elsewhere. We need bringing up to date badly there's nothing here only Somerfield. It's not enough. It's just becoming a town of charity shops. It's nearer to shop in Broughton Park you don't have to carry your shopping as far as walking up the road. It's all money going out of Buckley.
Mon Feb 11 10:03:46 2008

I have been trying to find out where there are any groups or classes where I can learn to paint preferably in water colour. I signed on for day classes in Mold but unfortunately these could not go ahead because of lack of interest. I was offered evening classes instead but I cannot attend at night. If anyone can help with information I would really appreciate it.

Peta Hutchins, sorry the dates for Thomas are wrong. Tilly was 10 in 1901 census and they were methodists. Look in 1901 census for Flintshire or try all Buckley methodist churches, church records. Martha, I think, died before I was born in 1948 so Martha must have been born somewhere around 1856.
Wed Jan 23 08:17:01 2008

Peta Hutchinson, re Tillies family. Thomas Jones born 1812 Overton. Martha Zacharias was from Kerry, Ireland, so not much info, the census gave an address of 1881 Monks Coppenhall, Cheshire. Sam and Gwennie's daughter, my aunt, are Glenys and Perc. They live in Cefnybedd. I will put this as my favourite so I will look more regularly. Sam and Gwennie lived at Mold Road, Caergwrle. It was the first house up the mountain. My chilhood there was wonderful. I hope it is still there.

It's true what they say...you don't know what you've got til it's gone! I never thought much of Buckley when I lived there. I've been a resident all my life, but recently this year I've had to move. Buckley isn't perfect but it's home. Why are we complaining? And for the teenagers...there is loads for them to do - saying there isn't anything for them is just an excuse for their behaviour.

The local health board are considering building the new clinic on one of the two school football pitches at the Elfed High School. Do the local councillors agree with this? Do the school governors want to sell off the crown jewels, open space in the middle of Buckley? This ground will be worth millions in years to come, build on it now, and it will be lost to the town forever. I hope they will not be silly enough to do it.
