Just looking at the Buckley news and saw the message from Jim Maxwell, and yes I did work at RAF Sealand building 14, and married to Wally Wilkinson, so still around - not in Buckley.

I left Buckley back in the 70s, I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers either myself or my wife Joan (Price), we still get back up there. We both went to Elfed and the Board. Great childhood memories.

I am trying to trace my grandfather's relatives who lived in Buckley. He was Charles Williams and had a brother, Edward. They were policemen and were born at Oak Cottage, Nant Mawr, Buckley. Charles worked as a clerk at Padeswood Railway Station, before becoming Chester Town Hall keeper in 1902. They were the sons of Charles and Anne Williams who lived at Oak Cottage, Padeswood Road, Buckley. I think there were more children - so I must have some cousins out there! Anyone know anything, please?

To Mollie Wilkinson. Did you used to work in the stores in Building 14 RAF Sealand and married Wally Wilkinson who was at one point my supervisor on Blue Silk?

Wow it has certainly changed over the years, so many changes but good to still see things like Nev the butchers still going. Even saw the guy that used to have the sweet shop by the coronation gardens walking down the mile on my last visit.

Hi, I am looking for anyone who remembers or has heard of a Mr Herbert Ellis who married Elizabeth Owen 1917, doing a bit of family history and found that he was born and bred Buckley (trap) and she was from Shotton (ninehouses).

In the 1980s I worked for Flint taxis and one of the drivers lived in Buckley. His name was John Murphy, his wife Anne was a nurse at the local hospital. I wonder if anybody has any information, do they still live in Buckley?

I am trying to find out about an incident which happened on the Dukes fields( Buckley) back in the late 1800s. The area now is residential and incorporates Linthorpe Road / Victoria Road / Knowle Lane / Church Road etc. Apparently there was a serious fire on the land where 3 people were killed, 2 females and a male from the same family. I am seeking help from any budding historians as my house is sited on the "port hole" where this incident happened and the spirits of these poor people are present in my property, although this does not worry me I would like to know more and see if their spirits can be helped to move. This is a genuine request as I have had a medium look into certain unexplained events at my home and the information was relayed to her via her spirit guide. Any information would be appreciated.

I lived in Buckley from early '40s to mid '50s. I lived at 74 Spon Green, 50 metres from the Rose & Thistle. I went to Lane End Infants then Buckley Board School, Padeswood Road. Fond memories of playing football in Barclay's Field and walking to the Black & White steps.

I have lived in Buckley all my life and though it isn't perfect there are still many good and decent people living here. A lot of the old characters have passed on but there are still many with a tale or two to tell. Names that bring back fond memories - John Summers, The Standard pipe works, The Tiv, (where I have spent many happy nights, The Top Club, Buckley Baths (how cold was that?) - the list goes on and on. I would love to hear from anyone who has moved away and possibly remembers me, that is unless I owe you money.SEE THEE

To Carol Of Shotton, hi Carol, Bill Thompson used to sleep downstairs - that's probably the reason he survived the fire. Although only living about 300 yds from the fire, we first heard about it on the radio news before going to school. I remember passing the burnt out house (which was the old "Prince of Wales" Pub) and seeing the firemen throwing Antony's new bike (a rarity at the time) & other burnt out things onto a council lorry. Try the Chester Chronicle & Flintshire Leader (properly in Harwarden Library). I think the year could be 1959/60, regards, Bill.

Thanks Bill for that information, I have just recently received all the death certificates and it seems that five in all died in the house fire. I wondered if you know where William was at the time of this fire. This is so sad how so many died in a house fire. I'm now searching the archives for any newspaper cuttings, which is very hard to trace. Thanks again Bill, it's been of great help as I'm researching my family tree.

To Carol from Shotton. At the time of the fire I was 12/13 yrs old living on Spon Green (having moved from Brook St, Prince of Wales Row where the fire was). Bill Thompson survived the fire, those who died were Mrs Thompson, two daughters one was called Eluned plus her daughter approx two yrs old & Antony Thompson age about 14. We used to play together with all the kids from "Lane End" (poor but happy) up the Goodie & the Knowle Hill. What happened to it?

I wonder if anyone can remember a house fire where some people where killed. The family were the Thompson family and I think that William Thompson's wife was killed, and also a child. The fire would have happened in the late 1950s, early 1960s.

To Barbara Ellis "Little Mountain". Hi Barbara, I remember you. I went to Lane End infants school in the early 1950s (remember Mrs Kirkham?). I have a school photo with you, your sister Judith & cousin Gwyneth (Griffiths) on it with the old Pop works in the background, I can name 90%+ of the others on the photo. My dad Ernie owned a butchers shop (one of about 20+ in Buckley at the time) at Lane End, I used to deliver to lots of familes in Little Mountain. I remember Wendy Jones (I was in love with her for years pity she never knew it!). I also walked in the 100th Jubilee as a choir boy at St Matthew's. Stephen Edwards I remember played drums in J B Bishop & the Kurates. I later joined The Kurates & then Deeside group Cleo's Mood before settling down & running my own hectic business here in Dyserth for the past 34 years. Have retired now (early may I add). Another Little Mountain Lad - Alan Hughes owns a Londis shop on Vale Rd Rhyl, 2 miles from where I live. I love N. Yorks, have stayed in Easingwold Terrington, Tollerton, Whitby etc. Where did the years go? Where are we all now? None of us then had any money but we were all happy & didn't envy anyone who had more than we did. I have still got my Buckley Coronation & my Buckley Pantomine Mugs (has anyone else?). Well it is true "You can take the lad out of Buckley but you can't take Buckley out of the lad." Kind regards Bill (the Butcher).

I lived in Little Mountain Road from 1946-1970, my sister being Judith and my cousin, Gwyneth. We had lots of friends in Warren Crescent - Pam & Fran Berry, Sandra & Wendy Jones, Dave Fletcher, the Jenkins family, Paul Burt, Lesley Jones to name a few. Enjoyed happy times making clay pots, riding bikes, having concerts - lots of good fun. I went to Hawarden Grammar with Hugh Michael, Tricia Howard, Stephen Edwards etc. I remember walking in the 100th Jubilee, going to Bistre Methodist Sunday school, attending Lane End infants school and the Board school at the Cross, enjoying the pantomimes, Drury youth club, the Saturday night dances at Penyffordd & much more.

In 1974 we visited my Uncle Edward Williams & were so taken by the area. The garden, elsewhere, and the small courtyard, and the ginnels, and the inside of the house was so beautiful. We all went for walks in the nearby woods. Uncle Ted put on a wig in a department store and drew a large crowd!

About the photo of John Gawthorpe's barbers shop - did not have a billiard room at the back, he just had a door leading to the billiard hall at the back. The hall had six tables where you could play snooker or billiards for sixpence for forty minutes.

To Karen in Colwyn Bay: Do you have any information on my grandad George William Connah? He is buried in Bistre Cemetry, Buckley. I do not have any photos of him. My mum, Mary Connah lives in Broughton. She is now 59. I understand her Dad died when she was 2 or 3 yrs old so the year might have been around 1949. Thanks!

Where does one start? I remember mostly the Jubilee in Buckley, being from the St Matthews Sunday School in Lane End. The jelly and ice cream at the end in the hall. Remember the grotto at St Matthews school for Christmas fete. Bonfire night at Little Mountain. The little shop at Little Mountain, Buckley Junction where I used to catch the train to Hawarden Grammar with Hugh Michael, Barbara and Judith Griffiths, Pamela Berry, Elspeth Jenkins, Wendy and Sandra Jones - those dark cold nights playing in Warren Crescent. Waiting patiently for Father Christmas, sitting in my bedroom window watching the snow falling - it has been a long time since I have seen snow! Maybe when we visit for Christmas this year! A white Christmas is really something, usually we are all sweltering, in 30+ degrees, trying to stop the salads wilting and getting hot and the jelly melting! Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me from school days in the 1950s and 60s.

Not having attended the jubilee for a number of years. I was saddened to see how it has diminished in size both the procession and spectators. Many of the old people of Buckley, either dead or can't be bothered like me. Next year it will be different - please God.

Did anyone know my grandfather George Lewis? He kept a diary of life in Buckley I believe. He had three sons George, Amos and Frank also my father Eric later adopted. Amos was a potter, I would like to know where he worked as I am studying ceramics at university and have to write a paper on Buckley pottery. George Lewis owned the brickworks, which one I don't know. Any information would be wonderful.

Thanks Fiona for that - there may be a connection. We also have a Davies connection to the same family - but then it is a common name in Wales. Benjamin and Catherine Bennett did die in Bistre. Well Catherine in 1872 maybe in child birth and Benjamin did not die till 1907 and is buried in Bistre church yard. I think William the son was a grocer. William the grandson married Martha Ramsden whose mother was Frances Davies. She married a James Fletcher Ramsden who was a mining engineer. I think all my Ramsdens and Bennetts came from the Buckley area although they originally lived in Connah's Quay. Thanks.

All mother's side of family come from Buckley and lived there myself till 1975. Mother's name was Connah and owned Connahs Yard on Padeswood Road. Am looking to trace anyone having details of Mary and William Connah of this address or William and Mary Bellis of Tram Lane about late 1900s.
With regard to Shirley's query about Bennetts, a Charlie Bennett rented shop from my great grandfather in Connah's Yard about this time until passed away about early 1960s. Think his parents were there before him so might be some connection.

I spent my childhood in Buckley (1968-1983). I attended
West Lea infants, then from aged 7 I went to Buckley C.P. now known as Westwood. The teachers were BRILLIANT! Mr Brooks (with his endless patience) I was a bit of a chatterbox! I sat next to PaulineAnne Reilly and we talked non-stop! Miss Astbury's class listening to Phill Drabble nature talks on the radio! And Mr Hefin Parry was also a fabulous teacher (now head at Mountain Lane sch.). Buckley has changed but so has every other town, keep up the traditions! The Jubilee was the highlight of the year as a child! I now live in Bagillt but still have many, many fond memories of Buckley. Best wishes to all from an old Buckley mug.

Just wondering if anyone out there has any connections or remembers any Ramsdens especially but also Bennetts living in Buckley in the 19th and 20th centuries. They seemed to be married etc at Bistre Emmanuel church and lived in Buckley Lane - well a Benjamin Bennett did - and wife Catherine. His son William had a son William who married a Ramsden also from the area. William Ramsden was first a brickmaker then an engineer and surveyor. Can anyone out there help please?

Wendy - Please.... people have always moaned about the younger generation. I can remember the local parks which where supposed to have been wreaked by the evacuees during the war (and never repaired 30 years later!). I now live and work in Inner London. As a young Buckley Mug in the 1970's youngster I was probably just as much of a pain to my elders as the present lot. This is a Brill site!

I can't believe how much Buckley has changed since I was small, 46 years ago. It has altered so much. Some of the changes haven't been for the better. It's sad that some of the friendliness has gone too. I think profit rather than comunity projects seems to have taken over. People grumble about the youth causing havoc but is there anywhere or anybody trying to make a place for them to go, somewhere they could perhaps learn to play instuments (band types) snooker, pool, roller blading the things teenagers like, not what adults think they should like. There should be a piece of land they could build a community centre on or use the one they have, just for the youngsters and maybe let them have a say what facilities they would like. This would benefit every one in the long run as there would be no teens hanging around the streets.
