As a child in the 50s living in Rhos, the Osbourne St bomb incident was still a topic of conversation in the village. My great grandmother in particular, spoke of opening her bedroom window that hot summer just as the bomb went off. The windows were blown out of her hands and she saw a poor woman hurled into the air and landing on some telephone wires. My father, who had been an RAF bomber navigator, told me it was an anti-personnel bomb which had made a hole in the street and not gone off. Perhaps not untypically for Rhos and despite the attentions of the local policeman, a group of people decided it was appropriate to look into the hole - and then the bomb exploded. Also in the 50s in a related incident, as kids, we would regularly cycle up to Rhos mountain. On one of these occasions, some other kid had found an UXB on the mountain and notified the local farm who arranged for the local constable to come and collect it. He later arrived on his bicycle with a small galvanised bucket, which he filled with water and, amusingly, but incautiously, put the bomb in and cycled back to the village without incident. I recall seeing the fins sticking out of the bucket as he passed. My dad was furious and said that it was an incendiary bomb which could have gone off at any time. What fun we had in those far off days, before the world turned lax and sour!

Ref: Malcolm Lawrence, Dyserth. When I was 9 yrs old in Dec 1947 I heard a four engine plane fly over, and vaguely saw it in the low clouds heading right for CWM mountain, seconds later the engines increased then there was a muffled crack and a second deep thud. I have researched this and find it was a civil Halifax G-AIHU with four ex-RAF crew who were all killed instantly. After making enquiries via the net I was kindly contacted by Graham Parsonage the son of the pilot (John Parsonage), and presently I am writing a short article entitled "A Tragedy of Errors" having retraced the mistakes made by the crew and also the Liverpool controller, and indeed I flew the exact same course on the flight simulator using the very same weather and making what I am sure were the same mistakes per the AIB report, so you can imagine how astounded I was when I also crashed into CWM mountain in blind conditions! - if there is anyone in the Dyserth area who may have collected anything from this crash? I would like to present a small relic of his dad's final flight mounted on a wood plaque for presentation to the pilot's son. I would of course give full credit to the supplier of any item. Any photos of the wreckage would also be an excellent addition to my story.

My sister used to live at Cae Glas Farm near Bronwylfa, Denbighshire. During the war, a plane crashed there, killing the pilot who, we are told, was Polish. The farmer still regularly ploughs up pieces of aluminium from the wreck. Can anyone help me to identify the pilot? Many thanks, Roger.

Anson N 9855 crashed in Cwm Ffynnon Lloer, in the Carneddau, flying at night in moonlight on 9th November, 1943. It was on a training flight from 3 AOS (Air Observers advanced flying School) at Halfpenny Green Airfield between Bridgenorth and Dudley. Of the crew, I think that 4 (Sgts Hoag, Gavin, Hill and Roberts) were British, but the navigator, Sgt Lewis, was Australian. All believed killed on impact.

In answer to Darren Richardson's quote regading the plane crash at Llwyn Knottia farm. I was given permission to search the area in about 1976 by the tenant farmer and only found a small scrap of aluminium which was definitely from that crash. What happened to the small piece I don't know but it was a valued find only to be lost again. What a senseless waste of lives.

For Darren Richardson. Just spoken to my uncle who was 10 at the time a German bomber was shot down over Wrexham. It landed in fields by a lodge on the Cefn Road, Wrexham. He remembers three airmen being killed. Two parachuted out over Abenbury brick works but had left it too late and died. They are all buried in Wrexham Parish Church. He took a piece of the wreckage and some scorched parachute home as a souvenir - only for it to be thrown out later by his mum!

When evacuated to Moortown, 2 miles from Tavistock, I remember a bomber crashing into a field across from the blacksmiths a mile or so west of this hamlet. It spit in half, part stuck in a haystack and remember the soldiers standing guard over the half we could see. Hope to put this in my book of being an evacuee at Langston House. Been researching for 20 years civilian and children's memories to include. All help appreciated. Now in Ohio. Retire to write next year. Was in WRAF during the '50s. Sincere thanks for any help. In 1959 the first Vulcan bomber going to USA crashed, disintergrated over Canada. Being on the Wing commanders staff at that time, knowing the repercussions on the base of the 9 (?) crew. Responsible for the administration of the familes move out of the Marriage pach, immediately! Not even a shoe was found or was there years later?

Ref: Simon Povey and RAF Wrexham. My father F/Lt Richard Dobson was based at Wrexham from 27 Jan 1944 until 14 May 1944 with 11(P)AFU. He made 24 flights on Ansons and 7 flights on Oxfords. All but five of the flights he acted as wireless operator and was navigator on the five. He was posted to 192 Squadron Special Duties at RAF Foulsham which he flew to from Wrexham on 15 May 1944. He completed 20 Ops as navigator on Mosquitos before crash landing in September 1944. He was invalided out of the RAF in 1946.

For Andy, Flint: Thank you indeed for researching my scant report and data about the 'Bryneglwys' Spitfire. I reckon you are spot on with the report and circumstances. The impact site can still be discerned by me via Google Earth after all these years. For what it's worth, the past anecdotal story I had relayed to me was: the Spitfire was from an OTU at Hawarden and 'went in' just short of the moor's crest on level flight and in heavy cloud with the pilot killed instantly - he was a pilot / flying officer rank. The wreckage and site burned for days and began to set the moor extensively on fire. So, some RAF boffin hit on the idea of bombing the plot with sandbags dropped by Hampdens (NFD) soon after. As far-fetched as this all reads, I do recall seeing a lot of coarse sand aggregate in and on the terrain where I found my relic. Times and stories get mixed up even by well-meaning folks, and I suspect this aspect relates to other crashes close by in the region. Ruabon vaguely cropped up, if this could settle the digression. The fatality of the pilot, irrespctive of my tale's crash semantics, is, I hope commemorated somewhere. I bet, like most pilots of that era, he wasn't very old.

For Simon Gerrard - I came across reference to two likely candidates for the Spitfire crash you mention. One, on 25.7.1943 when 'P7295' went into a high speed dive (possibly due to lack of oxygen) and crashed near Corwen, killing the pilot. A more likely candidate may be on 5.8.1942 when 'X4642' broke up in a dive over Bryneglwys. The pilot managed to bail out but died six days later from his injuries. Both aircraft were from 61 OTU. Perhaps other readers can provide additional detail to clarify matters.

Anyone know anymore details of the deceased pilot and aircraft? I'd like to donate my few remains to an appropriate aviation museum in remembrance of this pilot. Diolch / thank you.

In 1942 or 1943 I came home from boarding school to find a fighter (almost certainly Spitfire or Hurricane) had crashed with little damage at map ref 225278 on the Denbigh/Shropshire border near Llansilin. The plane was dismantled and taken away by a large van along the narrow path opposite Brookside Cottage where we used to live. I don't know whether this crash was significant enough to be chronicled elsewhere; I would guess it was either on a training flight or had been trying to intercept bombers heading for Liverpool who would have passed this way. Has anyone more details?

Gill Waterhouse, Wiltshire. The aircraft you refer to is Handley-Page Halifax BV DG358 coded 'J'. In November 1943 it was allocated to 1677 HCU at Faldingworth, near Lincoln & never saw operational use. On the morning of 23.1.1944 it took off on a training flight. At 20,000 ft over the Welsh borders, the starboard outer engine failed. It being impossible to maintain height on the remaining 3 engines, Pilot Sgt. P.K. Bennett began a descent through the thick storm clouds. Ice began to build up & subsequently, violent turbulence tore the airframe apart. The starboard wing was torn off, smashing into the tail unit on the same side. DG358 crashed into fields near Bryn-y-Groes (north of Aberhafesp, Newtown) at 1440 hours, with none of the 9 crew surviving. The bodies were taken to nearby Bwlch-y-Ffridd Village Institute. At the time of the crash, the airframe had accrued only 78 hours flying time! Clearance of the wreckage took almost 3 weeks. Cosford Aerospace Museum had some of the larger parts, as recently as the 1990s, so I understand. Hope this is of some assistance.

Readers may be interested to know of several other publications dealing with aircraft crashes:
Fallen Eagles by Edward Doylerush covering North East & Mid Wales.
By the same author, No Landing Place (Vol's 1&2) covering crashes in Snowdonia.
High Ground Wrecks by David J Smith - a survey of crash remains on the hills & mountains of the UK & Ireland.
Dark Peak Aircraft Wrecks by Ron Collier covering the area of the Peak District National Park between Sheffield & Manchester.
The Snowdonia Aviation Historical Society also published 2 small booklets entitled respectively Warplane Wrecks of Interest in Snowdonia & ! The Air War over Gwynedd.
Down in Wales (Vol's 1&2) by Terence R Hill covering wartime crash sites in Wales.
This is by no means a comprehensive list and some may no longer be available. Perhaps I should add that I have no connection to any of the authors or group(s) mentioned. Hopefully this information will assist your readers.

My gf's dad of 74 says he remembers seeing the plane, and hearing the bang but didn't know what happened. He said that remnants of the plane were found and confiscated by officials and locked up in a garage that was owned by someone in the area, padlocked up, parts were found in woodlands. He says the reports said that the plane landed safely at Valley on Anglesey but says the parts off the plane were quite large. Any info would be good, thanks.

My late father was about 10 years old in 1940, and he told me of a few events in Pwllheli regarding shot down German planes on a bomb run to Penrhos Training camp. One was shot down on South Beach sands, and he remembers seeing the wreckage, including a severed leg in a black jackboot. At least one crew member survived, the following morning the whole school were paraded down to Pwllheli Railway Station to see 'y Jyrman'! My father recalls the tall, young, blond, in black flying gear, in handcuffs, visibly shaking in fear and trauma on the platform. Two swarthy Home Guard men and two policemen were escorts. The children were lined up in single file, and told to pass the airman one by one and to spit on him. Some, including my father, refused to spit. It created a deep image on him for the rest of his life. Fragments from the wreckage, including personal possessions, found their way into my family. I would like to know more.

I can remember a number of air crashes in Flintshire and wonder if anyone else could fill in any details. [1] Spitfire or Hurricane crashed in a field across from the Leeswood CP School, circa 1939/40. I witnessed this airecraft skim over the school roof and crash in the field next to Dee View. I was the milk monitor at the time and was picking up the milk crate from the school gate. I well remember the district nurse, Nurse Williams, come from her home in Bryn Clyd. With her nurse's bag she ran down the lane at the rear of Britannia Road to the aircraft and was able to release the pilot whom I believe was a Canadian, she laid him out on the aeroplane wing where he died shortly afterwards. It was during this period I can also remember a Halifax bomber crash on the river bank behind the Druid Inn at Pontblyddyn and can well remember visiting the site on a number of occasions before it was taken away by what I presune would have been a crash investigation team. A further crash I remember occurred when a fighter plane crashed behind the Ffrith Farm in Treuddyn presently owned by the pilot. I think was French he seemed to have survived the crash and was brought to the Oakley Arms at the top of Queen Street opposite the present school entrance, which was kept by a Mr & Mrs Herrival. Mr Herrival was a native of the Channel Islands and could speak fluent French. Also a Tiger Moth Bi Plane crashed at Pontblyddyn Church Yard and came to rest on a grave, I think belonged to the family of Mrs Ruth Hannah Roberts deceased. The other crash I remember was on the Llanfynydd side of Hope Mountain. This was in 1951. I remember this date quite well as I was on home leave from the RAF. The pilot was a serving airman, I think a sergeant. He, I am sure, was killed instantly in the crash.

Almost my earliest memory is of a crashed German aircraft. I was about 3.5 years old and was travelling in my father's motorcyle and side car in the summer of 1940. The aeroplane was on the edge of a field alongside what is now the A25, between Reigate and Dorking. The owner of the field had cordoned off the 'plane with a cleft chestnut paling fence, and was charging onlookers 6d entry to the crash site. It was a single engined fighter, probably a Messerschmit 109, and was virtually intact having made a wheels up landing and finishing in a tail up position at about 15 degrees. My father went into the enclosure for a closer look, and even at my tender age I was struck by how small the 'plane was. I would very much like to locate the actual spot, but not suprisingly I do not recall the rest of that day's journey. Does anyone have more details of this incident?

My Wrexham born father told me that he and other kids stripped a downed German plane during the war. The next morning, the police came to Grove Park school and asked the kids to bring in their "souvenirs." Dad said kids were hauling in parts of wings, etc. Any info on the date and location of the crash in WW2 appreciated.

This is indeed an interesting thread. I just want to mention that ALL military aircraft crash sites and wreckage, regardless of nationality or era,are protected under the Protection of Military Remains act. Under the act it is a criminal offence for anyone to tamper with or disturb a crash site in any way.

The plane that came down in Nantglyn was attacked by two fighters in the evening during the summer of 40 or 41 over the Dee estuary near Gronant. My mother actally witnessed it being shot up and chased towards the direction of Denbigh. It crashed above Nantglyn killing two of the crew. In 1984 it was rediscovered and unexploded bombs were found on board. The bomb disposal unit detonated them on site.

My father was sitting outside his Grandma's (Oakenholt Papermill cottages) one evening when a Heinkel He111 flew over heading for Liverpool, swiftly followed by two fighters. One fighter was hit by the Heinkel's rear gunner but the other fighter came up under the bomber and shot out his stbd engine. The bomber then banked over to the right and my Father believes crashed somewhere in the Buckley area.

On the 28th October 1941 Flying Officer Gerald Fisher (41570) of the Merchant Ship Fighter Unit was carrying local flying Hawker Hurricane No P3142 when Flying Officer Fisher had to carry out a forced landing near to the Courtaulds Factory at Connah's Quay, Flint at 15:45 hours, the aircraft hit a bank and turned over and Flying Officer Fisher was slightly injured.
The engine cut when the petrol was exhausted in the gravity tank as Flying Officer Fisher failed to switch to the main tanks.

I'm trying to identify (on behalf of my father) a four-engined RAF plane, with a perspex nose-cone, that crashed in Pontblyddyn (near Mold) in either 1944 or 1945 (possibly in the late afternoon on a weekday in the Summer?). The plane skidded across farmland and came to rest with its nose over the river, opposite the church. My father remembers that the plane had malfunctioned. One member of the crew was killed and the plane was removed from the site shortly afterwards. Vague details, I know, but any information would be welcomed.
