Bombs in Pentre

Last updated: 07 February 2008

Q:Derek Griffiths from Pentre, Queensferry: "I was born in Pentre in 1937. Does anyone recall the bombs that dropped about the village? I know of a few - one in Mancot Lane on the bend, a bus went into it, one oppsite the then Co-op. Does any book record this time? Details please."

I'm 19 now and remember when I was about 7 being told in Sandycroft C.P. We got read a section from a book by a local resident. That mentiond the bombings, the teacher stated to us that a bomb landed in the field right by the school. Then the RAF came over from Sealand I believe and engaged the bombers. I also remember hearing from a teacher in High School that there were German Bomber/s that crashed in the Dee.

Would be great to hear from people who lived in Pentre in the '40s. Yes, I recall the bomb hole dead opposite the then Coop but more the one a bus went into in Mancot Lane. Does anyone recall the Queensferry swings, Baz's cafe, the motorbike crowds, the other cafe in the main road, the Plaza, etc?

I lived at 3 New Houses Pentre when I was young. I can remember playing in the bomb crater in the fields in front of our houses. People there at the time the bomb was dropped can remember all the door and windows of the houses being blown in.

My mum told me that a bomb dropped where the Sandycroft school is now, between the school field and the next field approx 30 ft from the field gate by the main road. There is a stream there and there was/still is a large gap in the hedge. We lived in Leaches Lane.

I remember staying with my aunt in Golftyn Lane and watching the flares, searchlights, etc and hearing bomb explosions somewhere in the Shotton area. We were peeping through the blackout curtains.

Isn't there anyone out there who lived in the area at this time? Surely someone in the locality must be on the net...would be nice to hear from somebody who lives or recalls the old times or me!
