The Pavilion, Rhyl

Q: Kathy from Withernsea: "I have an old vase with a picture of the New Pavilion, my question is does anyone know when this was first built? The small vase is pretty old. I have only been to Rhyl the once I am afraid to say."

The "New" Pavilion on your old vase was built in 1908 and was, until its demolition in 1974 one of the most outstanding architectural features on the west coast. In addition to presenting many stars and bands of the day, the theatre was home to the Manchester Rep. Company and Prince Cox's Circus. It was said that the copper dome could be seen glinting in the sunlight from miles out to sea. Sadly it was this glorious crown that partly lead to demolition. Apparently by the 1970s it was somehow considered unsafe and the council in their wisdom decided rather than repair, they would take the cheaper option of demolition. Ironically, when the dome fell, it remained intact! Had they shown a little more forethought, maybe this magnificent monument would still be with us. Goodness knows there is very little of old Rhyl left and with regeneration now a priority it could have been (like the Midland hotel at Morecambe), a major attraction and landmark.

It was built 1991. Can anyone tell me who built it?

Pavilion dates from around 1990ish. The old one was demolished in 1974 about the same time as the pier went. The old pavilion dates from around 1900 or just before. Sometimes people called the Gaiety theatre the pavilion but that was before the pavilion with the large dome was built. The Gaiety theatre dates from the 1860s. Think that went in the 1990s.

I enjoy reading the various tales and questions relating to Rhyl. I have photos of ships and tugs in the harbour but no idea of names or dates. Keep up the good work.

The earliest date I can find is 1867? Don't get too excited, the vase you have may have been fired much later. Regards from Rhyl
