Rhyl swimming pool

Q: Morris, Llandudno: "During the mid 1980s I worked as a care officer, Cartref Melys school, Conway. We held a swimming competion, between similar schools at a pool in the Rhyl area. The pool was a competition type pool down a country road and approached by a small tree-lined driveway. I have been trying to locate this pool for some time, and have actually looked at the one off Grange Road, but my memory serves me that it was off a country type road, not a built up area. I would be very grateful for any help."

Lived there for 2 years - best days of my life! Need to speak to people who were there - (1984-1985). PS. I was the best runner there - m'y names on the trophies. Other lads ther at the time were chris whittle, russel kendrick (tamworth), henry, chris taberer, danny drodrick (london), durval mclean(london).

You could have come into Rhyl via the back lanes (country roads), which leads into a road lined with trees, up until you get to the shops area; a fraction after that is Rhyl High School, which is the only competition pool in Rhyl.

QUESTION: As a child I attended Ysgol Dewi Sant on Rhuddlan Road. (It was formerly Ysgol Glan Clwyd, and earlier than that, Epworth College). At the back of the school was a sunken concrete area with thick stone walls that we called 'y pwll nofio' (the swimming pool) and at the very bottom of the playing fields was the 'red island' - a square brick-built platform. Does anybody remember these buildings? I've heard that the red island was once changing rooms - does anybody remember it as a proper building? Was 'y pwll nofio' ever really a swimming pool?

You could have been at the Pontins pool in Prestatyn? You get to that via a tree lined road. We used to use it when I was in school in the area during the 70s! Are you sure you were in Rhyl?

Sounds to me like you went to the swimming pool via the all weather pitch entrance. This was down a small road called Larkmount, which led to a small tree lined lane to the car park of the swimming pool.
