Bowers Road, Acrefair

Bowers Road, Acrefair

Last updated: 02 September 2008

Peter Lloyd is seeking information for his father about Bowers Road, Acrefair...

Peter writes: "Would it be possible to find any information on Bowers Road, Acrefair. I have searched libraries etc. but cannot find anything anywhere. My father is 84 years of age and would love any information he could get on Bowers Road as that is where he was born and would love a picture and info. if possible."

Bowers Road, AcrefairLocal resident Ken Thomas remembers aspects of Bowers Road: "My house stands near the site of the old Forrester's pub, which was demolished some 35 years ago. Everyone round here used to go there. I also remember the Old Black Lion on the other side of the road. My wife was born at Brickfield Terrace, just over the road from where we now live. The terrace was also demolished some 35 years ago. A block of flats stands where it used to be."

Peter Lloyd: "Thank you to Mr Ken Thomas for his recollections. My father does indeed remember the Forrester's pub, the Black Lion and Brickfield Terrace. He also remembers the banking at the rear of Bowers Road where he used to make caves and play truant from Acrefair school. He tells me his mother used to chase him to school with a broom, but he was at home before she was. Also he remembers the very last red house before the cottages started and his grandparents buying pickled herrings from there."

To Peter Lloyd, hello Peter have just spent an hour looking at the Creswell site, very interesting, brought a lot of memories back to me. Being a miner's son I was, of course, very interested in the mine disaster. Whoever is responsible for editing the site is first class.

To Clare Kempster. Thanks for your email/comment, it's lovely to here from people from my part of the world. I'll let Phil know about it. I'm not sure but I may have known some of you older (elderly) relatives in the dim and distant past. Would be interested to know if I did. Your granddad's name is very familiar to me as my dad used to talk about him (all good). Hope you are doing well.

Christine Ladkin...I know your brother and sister in law Carole, as I was in school with your niece Rhian and still in some contact with her now. Oh, not forgetting David. My mam lives just up the road. Think my grandad worked with your dad too in Monsanto; Moy Jones from Cefn Mawr.

I have lived in Cefn Mawr all my life (except for a short stay in Wrexham Town.) I attended Acrefair infants and juniors unitil moving up to Ruabon school in 1981.Just recently I have been looking for photographs of the old school to show to my young family how beautiful the school was, now sadly demolished. Is there anybody who knows where I could find such images? The only image I have of it is on a mug given to pupils in 1977.

To Gary Greenberg, I believe that the church which was the Mission Church in Acrefair was started during the 19th Century. The reason that it was started was that people were coming into the area to find work which was available in the brickworks and iron works which were in Acrefair at the time. The church eventually grew into St Pauls Church Acrefair, which closed in the 1990s and has now been pulled down. St Paul's was the daughter church of Rhosymedre Parish. St John's Rhosymedre is still a very active church where many members of St Pauls moved to after their own church closed. As secretary of the PCC I am sure that our members would love to see copies of any documents which you have relating to the mission church. I will send you a copy of our history booklet if you contact the vicar at the parishofrhosymedre website, usually best accessed through the diocese of St Asaph web page.

Hi Marilynne. I too remember the buy a brick campaign of Vicar Rowlands. I seem to recall that it was six-pence a brick and there was a large chart at the back of the church where you could choose your brick. At what tender age it was I naively thought that names would be written on each brick when the two extension walls were built at either end of the church. I have memories of the alterations taking place - church services were held in the Institute and the consecration service after all of the work had been completed. The Sunday school was massive with over 200 attending and the annual prize-giving must have taken some organising. Sadly I have none of the books I was given as a prize which I again recall was based on attendance. Marilynne you mentioned Gordon Powell, he passed away some years ago.

My grandfather was William Henry Phillips. He was from Acrefair. His children were, Carrie, Gladys, Bertha, Leonard, my father William Henry & Gwen. My father passed away January 2006 & I and my siblings have heard that my grandfather was a chiormaster here before moving to Oldham where he was choirmaster at King St Baptist Church. Does anyone out there have a Daniel family in their family tree? I have Mary Ann, Edward, Joseph and Harriet at Cefn Mawr with the parents marriage at St John's Rhosymedre in 1844. Any help appreciated, Victoria

For Roger Coates. My greatgrandmother was Eliza Roberts(nee Coates) She was born in Ruabon in 1849 and I believe that your great grandfather Daniel Coates was her brother. The 1861 census shows the family living in Acrefair (parents John and Elizabeth). Eliza maried John Roberts around 1870 and they lived in Cefn Mawr. By 1881 they had 4 children and had moved to Failsworth presumably for work as John was a coalminer. They later moved to the Bolton area.

To Marilyn Strefford. Thanks for your recollection (no pun intended) of buying a brick for St Paul's. I think it was to have an extension of some sort built. Quite sad that now an application has been put to the council, to pull the old building down and build 4 houses on the site. However this will be better than seeing it as neglected as it has been since it was closed some 13 years ago. Any further St Paul's memories out there?
Mon Dec 11 13:52:13 2006

Marilynne Strefford (Thomas) Buckley/Cefn
For Yvonne Pryce. I was a member of St Pauls Sunday School for many years, I remember saving the old ship halfpennies to take to Sunday School to buy a brick for the wall, that I think was built behind the altar. This was when Rev. Rowlands was the vicar, he is buried in the churchyard at Rhosymedre. I don't know how much money was collected, but it seemed a long time and a lot of coppers. Does anyone else remember this? Susan Whitehead, Alan Hughes and Gordon Powell were in my Sunday School class, so perhaps they might also recall this.

I am helping my husband, Albert Noel Kempster, trace his family tree and was interested to see the surname mentioned as we are not getting very far. My husband was born in Ruabon on Christmas Day, 1937 and so far we haven't found any relatives. He says his father had a sister who lived in or around Ruabon and whose married name was Evans. Not much I know but perhaps someone knows something.

To David Hart, Thanks for your reply, it's lovely to hear people's recollections about my Dad. I'll let Phil know that you responded to my 'plea', I'm certain that you have more than just a few words with Phil when you see him, I know my brother! Thanks once again, and if you remember anything else I would love to read them.

To Christine Ladkin (Cowsill) I remember your father, Arthur, very well. He worked as a Rigger at Monsanto, together with some good friends of mine, and was always good for some leg-pulling about the Fron Choir. I was a member of the choir, as was one of your Dad's mates, and he would love to create some argument about our performances. Your brother Phil lives a short distance from me, and we usually have a few words together when we meet. I believe he is now a member of the choir, and no doubt your Dad would have been proud of him.

My father grew up in Abernant, his name was Arthur Cowsill, he would have been 85 this month (July 2006) and my brother lives on Brickfield Terrace Acrefair, Phil Cowsill, anybody out there recognise them?

It's so strange seeing the old 'Bridge', I remember when it was knocked down back in 1979? Things have definitely changed over the years - even for me. The old garages where the 'new' houses are built, Vale View, not really new now. My Mam still lives there at Bryn Terrace, Moyra Kempster. Still some really great memories, brownies with Dianne Powell as Brown Owl, and going over the bank to school, with Mair Evans as my first teacher.

hi, has anyone out there got any memories of St. Paul's church Acrefair. Think about the Sunday School trip to Rhyl, with umpteen coaches lined up by the church and towards the "laundry" on a Monday in August. Think of memories of being in the church choir, or harvest festivals with the wonderful smell of apples, and the harvest supper with apple pies for afters. There must be loads of you who got married in St. Pauls. Please share your memories on this sight. ( if you have any memories of St. Johns' church Rhosymedre they would be equally welcome as the ladies from the mother's union are going to surf the net next month and it would be great to hear from anyone with connections to either church) Thanks a lot for your help. Yvonne.

My grand father, John Coates, was born in Penycae. His father, Daniel and mother, Sarah Hayward, were from Acrefair. Sarah died while living in Bowers Road in 1898. I would like to hear from any members of the family.

Philip Davies, Acrefair, Carrog (Grouse Inn)
I lived in the prefabs in Cae Bedw, just around the corner from the broken bridge shown in the photo by Ken Thomas. My parents lived in the flats on the old Brickfield Terrace site. My mother now lives in the new Burton Terrace (OAP bungalows). My father & grandfather were both born in the old Burton terrace, my grand father kept the Grouse Inn, Carrog for many years, moving to Higham Villas, Acrefair with my parents, me & my brother David, who now lives near Preston. Vernon Wright, father of Chris Wright, kept the Forrester's. My uncle Albert Williams was caretaker at Acrefair CP School, his son Ron Williams lived in the house above the land rover in the photo at the top this page.

Joan Hudson (nee Roberts) from Acrefair (now Downh
I was born at 23 Burton Terrace in 1928. I remember playing with Ruby Matthews who lived at a grocers shop near to the Post Office. They kept a pig in a sty in the back garden and we used to walk around the brick wall surrounding the sty to see the pig. I remember Jean Dixon who lived at 26 Burton Terrace; she had an older sister called Nona and they were related to Coates the Chipshop. I lived with my older sister Margaret who was born in 1927 and we attended Acrefair Infants School until 1935. We then left Acrefair for Manchester but returned every Summer to stay with Auntie Alice Hewett and Uncle Harry at 32 Burton Terrace until the year 1945. We still return to this day to look for changes in Cefn and Acrefair and to visit John and Margaret Turtons family. Their family lived at Heol Abon, Cefn Mawr; they are my cousins.

My grandfather John David Heyward used to live in Bowers Road before he moved to Cefn Mawr. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers my grandfather or his brothers and sisters of which there were 14 all together. He worked at Monsanto and was married to Mary Alice who came from Llangollen. His family were members of Trinity chapel.

Peter Williams' mother I believe was the Landlady of the Forresters at one time. Is that Doug and Ken Lewis that you mention?

Further to the comments by Ken Thomas re. Bowers Road. Some older residents still live in the area, but NOT in the old stone cottages that were in Bowers Road! These were demolished years ago. Farmfield Cottages are still standing, and have been converted into one house. Mr Lloyd (snr) may remember the Edwards family that lived there, next door to the Kynaston family. Noel Edwards was my father in law and he had a sister named Dilys. She married "Johnnie" Bassett who also lived in Bowers Road. Two younger members of the LEWIS family are neighbours of mine, and their family lived in the stone cottages. Hope this will bring back some memories.
