Meliden and Talargoch Mine

Last updated: 13 January 2009

Q: Hilary Naden from Meliden: "Please can anyone give me any information on Meliden and the Talargoch Mine? I've tried the library in Prestatyn and book shops for any history of the above without any real success. Please can anyone help?"

I am compiling a booklet about Meliden Village and particularly its lead mining history. I have copies of pitures of the Talargoch mine, but I would like to know if there are any photographs of any of the workers in exsistence, and if so where can I find them.

Hello. I am trying to trace my family tree and have found at that my great great grandfather called Joseph Cunningham was attatched to the mine at Talargoch though I have no more than that. He was married to his wife who was born in 1888 so I would place him of the same era based on that. Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Re Star Inn Meliden. My father (same name as me) was Proprietor of the above, along with his partner Evelyn, who later became his second wife, 20/30 odd years ago.

I have recently taken over the Star Inn in Meliden and am trying to find out anything I can about the place, eg when it was built, who has lived and died here? We have a lot of unexplainable things going on here. I know it is an old building and have to expect certain noises but it would help I think if I had a bit of background about the place.

Ask your library if they can obtain a copy of Flintshire Historical Society publication, Volume 16 of 1956. This has a very interesting article on the Talargoch Strike of 1856. There is also mention in Vol 13 of 1952 of Roman involvement in mining in the area. Three more volumes, 18, 19 and 20 have very extensive work on the entire lead industry in Flintshire (heavyweight research, but good reading). I hope your library can help, if not then try Flintshire county hall library.
