My grandparents, Lancelot & Lily Bell, lived at and ran Castle Hill Farm for the Fox family up until approx 1975 when they moved down the lane. I have many happy childhood memories of Castle Hill and I remember the brewery buildings which at the time still had lots of bottles and labels etc in them.

To Catherine Fox, Edinburgh. Catherine you say John Fox who set up the brewery is your great, great grandfather. I am related to Jane Heyes John's first wife daughter of Elizabeth and Henry Heyes. Can you tell me what happened to her between 1851 and 1861 as John is married to an Ann. Is Ann Jane's sister? Hope you can help me.

Hi my great, great grandfather Thomas Bailey ran the castle in 1891, 1901. My other great, great grandfather Edward Ellis ran the Bluebell in Hawarden in 1901. Their children Arthur Ellis and Elizabeth Bailey married. I am trying to find out more about both family lines.

I am at present doing my family tree and have found a possible match to the fox family through John born about 1816 my intrest is his wife Jane Heyes and her brothers who held a share in the buisness. I am especially intrested in Janes parents. Has Anyone any info on the Heyes' that might at last connect this Heyes family to my 5x great grand father.

This is a message for Gonzo05, or anyone else who knows about the Stone Roses' recordings at Castle Hill, Ewloe. How do you know the water at the start of 'Breaking Into Heaven' is from Wepre brook? Does anyone have any more info on the Roses recording there? Thanks.

Sarah Sydney - we've never met but are you Ian's sister? I'm his daughter in-law. Stumbled onto this page because I was also looking for more details on the Fox Brewery history & Fox family in general. I've only traced back to John Fox b. 1816 because records are scarce. Don't know if anyone has anything that dates earlier...?Thanks!

Have just been directed to the message from Terry Uden from Kent re vessel "Hawarden Bridge". I have looked into the memoirs of my late father-in-law: Captain Joseph Fellows, he mentions the ship as trading in the River Dee but without further details. Capt Joe was at sea on coastal schooners and motor vessels from the early 20th Century to about 1970. He died in 1996 aged 100.

The Flint Library extension completed a few years ago occupies the site where the Hawarden Castle pub stood (demolished in the 60s). Pictures may be found on www.fflint.co.uk under 'old photos'.

I know that John Fox who set up Castle Hill Brewery had at least 12 children who survived infancy. I have traced back a little further than this but it's only guess work so if any of you have more information that would be really helpful. My great great grandmother was Emma Roose, John Fox's third wife and my great grandfather was Charles Edward Fox, John Fox's second last son. Please contact me if anyone wants to swap notes.

I am looking for information on a ship named the Hawarden Castle believed to have been built 1907 and of 210 gross tons, could have traded in the Chester area.

Hi Sarah, I understand that the cellars are being used as a recording studio and that permission was being sought for bottling spring water to be sold at Harrods. I have a two newspaper articles with this info that I read whilst working in London in th 1980s. Have a look on the web. You will find quite a bit of information. I have had great fun looking there but am hoping to do some research up there. I am hoping to do more research and would love to talk to your mother.

I too am interested by this part of my family history. I am the daughter of Margaret Fox, my grandfather was John Holmes Fox and I'm Viv Fox's cousin. We have now done the family tree back about three generations and I'm interested to see where others have got to. Viv - we have a number of different photographs that go back further than 1943 and I know Mum would love to show you. Can anyone tell me what Castle Hill is being used for now? Someone told me once that they thought it was now a recording studio. Anyone know?

Reply to Catherine Fox.
The Fox family were farmers at Ferry Bank Farm for at least three hundred years. I would be very interested for any information relating to this family.

I am interested to stumble across this as I am looking into my family tree. My father, Noel Fox, took over from his father John Fox when he died in 1943. My father left the business soon after and his uncle Cecil lived there until he died in 1980 (approx). I would value any details that anyone may have on the family prior to 1943, particularly relating to the brewery.

Dominic is right the Castle Hill Brewery did supply the Hawarden Castle. There are papers relating to the Brewery at Flintshire record office in Hawarden so you never know if you check these you might find a picture. I'm also related to John Fox who set up the brewery - he's my great, great grandfather.

Hawarden Castle Pub, Flint
My great uncle Enoch was the publican of the Hawarden Castle Pub in Church Street in the late 1800s, probably after your ancestor ran it, there is a short video on the BBC website of his grandson Stan Jones superimposed onto the video of his grandfather who was the local blacksmith standing in front of the pub. Hope you find it, regards, Val Burrows.

I believe that my Great, Great, Great, Grandfather whose name was Fox set up a Brewery in about 1830 called Castle Hill Brewery and they either owned or supplied local pubs of which I think the one you mention was one. I have only done a little research on this. Try typing in Castle Hill Brewery, Ewloe.
