The Sportsman's, Afonwen

Last updated: 11 February 2008

Q: Julia, Afonwen: "Does anybody have any information or stories about the Sportsman's in Afonwen? I know when it closed, don't know when it opened, and don't know anything about what went on in between! Would love any information, no matter how small."

Mark. The society (complements of Ray Davies) has a couple of photographs of the front of the pub, one when it was clearly open and the other showing it boarded up. These will be featured in a book I am currently producing on Flintshire Pubs and will be published in 2009. If you want to see earlier I can arrange. Any further information or stories associated with the pub would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mark, I have not seen any photos either, but I have had a promise from a chap I know, to show me a photo of outside, when it was in its 'heyday'. Will keep you informed. I do know it was on the mail coach route though.

Hi I live in what was knowen as the Sportsman Inn. Built in 1701 extention was built on in 1760 and as stated a 24 hour pub. It was converted about 14 years ago into three properties. I'm told that Albert Tatlot used to drink with some of the cast from Coronation Street perhapes someone could confirm this. And if anyone has any photos inside or out I would love to see them as I moved up from the south and have never seen the pub open.

hi elvet, thanks for that, i believe it was the first pub to have an all day licence, as the cement workers had a daily "ration" of beer to cool down after their shift, that was as well as being buried up to their neck in sand, again the same reason, to cool down. julie

The inn was certainly open in 1888, John Edwards being listed as the owner of the Sportsmans' Tavern. Probably fairly profitable too with the Afon-Wen Cement Works right by.
