Wrexham pantomimes

Q: Christine Davies from Wrexham: "As a child I performed in pantomimes in Wrexham, this was in the 50s. My Uncle Albert (Morris) always played the part of the Dame. Does anyone have any memories of these pantos and where they were held etc as my memory fails me?"

Correction to my last comment. Mr Albert Nicholls was the dame in the 1953 production of Babes in the Wood. Mr Al Morris was one of the robbers with Mr Jonny Goode. The Producers were Mr Wm. Dodman, Mr Ernest Davies and Madam Johnston.

My grandmother, Madam Johnston, produced pantomimes with Walter Roberts. Christine you are correct about your Uncle Al Morris he was the dame in Babes in the Wood 1953. Elizabeth Kelly, I have scripts and programmes relating to the pantomimes your great grandfather wrote and my grandmother produced. I also have a monologue written by Walter Roberts 'Old Grandad' which he gave to my grandmother. Also a photograph of your mother in the 1936 Babes in the Wood Pantomime.

I was in the Wrexham pantomime from the age of 7 years old as a dancer in the junior chorus and progressed to the seniors as I got older. It was Albert Nichols who played the dame. Also, Jonny Goody was our choreographer and also took part. The other principles were Cynthia Clutton, Christine Keenan, Ray James and my own mother, Beryl Moore, and my uncle Eric Rogers. Barry Flanagan who used to own the Hippodrome cinema was also in the senior boys chorus. I had many a happy hour taking part, the rehersals were held in the old Wrexham youth club down the side of the old Border Breweries offices in Mount Street.

I have just noticed this request for information concerning Wrexham Pantomime. I have in my possession 3 of the original programmes of the Walter Roberts Pantomime for the years 1937, 38 and 39. These give the full cast and pictures of the artists. I would be delighted to provide any information from these programmes to anyone who has an interest.

I would love to find out more about anything to do with these pantomimes as Walter Roberts was my great grandfather. My grandma was Dorothy Roberts (Dolly) and my mother is Georgina Ann Cudworth.

Pantos were performed by the Walter Roberts company, Alastair Williams will know more. The Pantomime Ward in the War Memorial was so called as it was funded by charitable donations from these events. They performed at the Hippodrome Theatre.

Are you sure you've got your uncle's name right? As I remember the dame was always played by Albert Nicholls from Huntroyde. The older pantos were played at the old Majestic Cinema and rehearsals were held in part of the old "Boys Club" at the rear of Mount St.
