Barb Meredith asks about her grandfather WJH Meredith Jones (was that Hubert?). The geneology, story and profiles of the Meredith jones family of Wrexham are now with the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, under the Seymour Jones collection. I hope this helps.

My interest is in the Middleton/Swan family from England possibly Canning Town. Jim Middleton c.1880 who had a connection with "Abby Arms, London" is this a pub? married Flo nee Middleton also c.1880. They had 2 children I know of; Walter Middleton c.1910 (my grandfather) and Jim c.1911. Walter married Esther Swan (who was born in Canning Town). Her parents were Peter Swan and Rose Norman. Rose was apparently born aboard ship between France and England.

I am interested in any information on my grandfather: W.J.H. Meredith Jones. He was a mechanical engineer of Wrexham in the late 1800s to early 1900s. He was probably born around 1884. He moved to the USA and married. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I have just discovered some papers belonging to my great grandfather, David Middleton - written in 1926 on various topics including mining, and spiritualism. I have his daughters' names - Martha Cooper (of Tonyrefail Road, Porth) - her sister, Marie - emigrated to Canada after the first world war and married my grandfather - John Walton... I am interested in contacting anyone from this family. Thanks.

Who was the historian who said that Edward Jones 11 came from a well known Welsh 'Catholic' family? In fact, he was a Protestant who gave refuge to his friend Thomas Salusbury (Babbington Plot) for which he went to the Tower before being hung, drawn and quartered. His father, the first Welsh Jones, made peace on behalf of Wales with Elizabeth 1st and became Master of the Wardrobe at Hampton Court.

J Kay Taylor's question about the Middleton's and Cadwgan Hall is answered in my earlier comment. The Middletons owned the hall for a period (as a 'Dower House'). The families were connected by marriage and both sided with Parliament during the Civil War, but Middleton switched sides at the Restoration. Col John Jones refused to do so, and was executed. The Middletons offered his family hospitality at their London residence Col John Jones refused to do so, and was executed, but the Jones family remained at Cadwgan from 12th century until mid-19th century, thanks to the Middletons, who also offered them hospitality at their London residence.

Cadwgan hall - our family lived at Cadwgan hall 'from time immemorial', in fact it was built in the 11th century and pulled down on the orders of the then owner, Col. Fitzhugh in 1967. The Middletons acquired it (in the guise of a dower house) for a period of time to enable their friends the Jones family to remain in their house. The Middleton connection came about after the restoration, when the house was seized by the crown in revenge for Col John Jones being a signatory to the death warrant of Charles I. Also, he had married Oliver Cromwell's sister and the hall had provided accommodation for Cromwell's army (pictures in National Library of Wales). The Middletons used to allow their relatives by marriage, the Jones family of Cadwgan Hall, to use their London home. The connection came from a marriage between the families recorded on a plaque at the head of the chancel of St Giles' Church, Wrexham. The Middletons were exonerated by Charles II thanks to their repudiating their loyalty to Cromwell, which Col. John Jones refused to do (see his speech on the scaffold recorded in 'the trial of the regicides' - "I would rather do one good thing for my country than have the popularity of the people"). In 1820, a later John Jones married Mary Meredith thus creating the family name of Meredith Jones - respectively descendants of 3rd and 5th royal families of Wales. The family left the hall towards the end of the 19th century after approximately 800 years. In the late nineteenth century, the family vacated the hall when four of the seven Meredith brothers emigrated because the family firm, Cambrian Leather Works, Wrexham (largest employer in north Wales) was unable to sustain them all. Cambrian Leather Works was sold in the 1920s and closed in the 1950s. At its peak it had subsidiaries around the world, but was ruined by the revolution in Russia. Richard Meredith Jones became chief exucutive of the north & south Wales bank, HO Liverpool (now trials hotel). All that remains of Cadwgan Hall is a fireplace, but the roof beams of the great hall were preserved at a museum for buildings somehwere near Worcester.
