Rhos street names and the nickname Jacko

Last updated: 12 January 2009

Q: Win Jones, Rhos: "Does anyone know the origins of the names of the two roads leading out of Rhos - Gutter Hill (Allt Y Gwter) and Vinegar Hill (Allt Ty Gwyn)? Also, why is a cluster of streets in Rhos named after royal ranks (King Street, Queen Street, Princess Road, Duke Street, Duke Road)?"

Q: Selwyn: Anybody know the origins of the term 'Jacko' when referring to someone from Rhos? Have heard that it comes from the Jacobite rebellion."

Does anyone remember the name Fred Williams who was a schoolmaster in the 1920s in Penycae? He died in his 40s of pneumonia and was apparently well respected and kind to the underprivileged children, giving them breakfast.

Selwyn, the term Jacko does come from the Jackobites, they were thrown or run out of Wrexham and settled in what is now Rhos. Apparently, they built the farm that has now been knocked down on the top of the hill on your way to Pen y Cae, which was the oldest building in Rhos.

Wil, Wrexham.
For:- Heulwen Hession, Tainant. Come down from Tainant through Drefechan and turn sharp right at Penymaes (farm?). Follow the road through some gates and past the top reservoir on to the mountain. Cross the river via a concrete slab and walk directly ahead up to the top. To the right of the footpath at the top you will see the remains of Newtown village. Don't know much more than that but the Archive department at Wrexham museum may be able to help.

Does anyone know any history of Newtown, which, I believe, was a cluster of 'tai unos' on the mountain above Tainant. I would be grateful of any info as I believe my grandparents lived there.

Just a suggestion in regard to the cluster of streets named after royal titles: In 1934, HRH Edward Prince of Wales visited Ponciau banks to view the progress of the construction of the then new park. When thinking of the location of the above mentioned streets, maybe they were named in honour of the royal visit?
