Hi Isobel, nice to hear that you are alive and well. I remember you and your sister Eileen your mum and dad. I also knew your dad was a mining engineer. I lived at Fron Haul about half a mile away with my sister Cathrine.

My daughter goes to Lixwm School and absolutely loves it. Fabulous staff and nice kids. It is the oldest primary school in Wales.

Thank you Isobel, I remember your family in Walwen. The Roman number theory is one of the three, but I doubt this as there is no W in roman numerals, and no-one can explain the relevance. The most likely derivation seems to be from "likesome" as used in Derbyshire dialects, and this ties in with the influx of Derby miners to the area in the eighteenth century. It's hard to prove this one also!!

I used to live in Lixwm and my Grandfather used to be the headmaster of the local school - he was William Allsopp and my mother was Gwynedd Allsopp and my father Edmund Nicholson. I was given to understand Lixwm was derived from Roman numerals.
