Last updated: 30 September 2008

Q:Vicky Williams on behalf of Acrefair Primary School: "Does anyone have any information about the local industry in the Acrefair area: Air Products, Monsanto or the local mines and clay works?"

My great great grandfather Benjamin Bateman was allegedly an iron master at Ruabon iron works. As a by-product the heat from the furnaces was used to grow pineapples. Benjamin Bateman was involved with the building of tramways in France and Germany, Argentine and Trans-Siberian railways. I have yet to research more into this.

I live in Foundry House, Ruabon. I have a map from 1874 showing the foundry and my house. I've been trying for 4 years, been to libaries in Ruabon, Wrexham, Rhos and Ruthin can't find any info. Two local people told me that the first wheel for Hafod mine was cast here, any info much app.

Hi Vicky, in addition to Peter's suggestions to use the Denbighshire Historical Society Transaction, which Wrexham Public Library should have a full set, there is also mention of Acrefair's industries in G G Lerry's Collieries of Denbighshire, Tim Jones's Rioting in North East Wales 1536-1918, A H Dodd's The Industrial Revolution in North Wales and mention is made of the British Iron Company in George Burrow's Wild Wales. You could also try the following website which has many photographs of the area - some unfortunately wrongly labelled as Acrefair, Cefn Mawr which are in fact Penybont Works, Pentre: gtj.org.uk/en/item10/26301
If you require any further information of Vols etc of the Transactions please ask via this site as I have a complete set.

Hi Vicky, To my knowledge, the most informative material you could get is in the Denbighshire Historical Society Transactions. Try secondhand bookshops. I have a few including articles about 'The British Iron Company' which was located on the Air Products site, and 'Clayworkers and Claymasters in the old parish of Ruabon', this includes the likes of J C Edwards etc. Most of these articles were written by noted local historian Ivor Edwards, sadly no longer with us. If you want anything specific, I may be able to help. Regards, Peter. (of course we may have local historians replying directly to you!)
