Last updated: 06 October 2008

Q: Cathy Sweetman from San Francisco, California: "I recently found an old brass door-knocker that has 'From the front door of #1 Palace Ave. Rhyl, Wales', hand-written on the back. Can you tell me anything about this location?"

I used to live at number 3 Palace Ave. Strange thing is I do not ever remember a number 1 Palace Ave. as our house was the first one on the side of the ave. with odd house numbers!

Michelle

No.1 Palace Ave used to be a guesthouse in the 1800s to the early 1900s, but from about 1913 there was an order for it to be knocked down under the health and safety act and it is now ordinary houses. Hope this info helps Cathy, good luck.

Hi Derek, there are a few Taylors in Rhyl, so would need more info.

Derek, Spain
Michelle? This isn't the Michelle I used to know, is it? Taylor?

Eileen Underhill from Rhyl
Number 2 Palace Ave was the entrance to Palace Gardens in the 1800s and the entrance stone was still there up to very recently - may be still is. Palace Gardens covered a large area up to the Palace Hotel.

Michelle
Wow! How interesting Cathy, I live on the next street to Palace Avenue.

Lawrence Brooks from Rhyl
Palace Avenue is in quite an old area of Rhyl, just off the promenade. There are lots of massive Victorian buildings down this end of town and were probably once hotels or guest houses. If you go on to multimap.com and type in palace avenue in top left hand corner (GB post code or place) then click on list for Palace Avenue, Rhyl.
