Sightings over Dee Estuary

Dee Estuary between Holywell & Wirral

Last updated: 23 June 2008

Contributor John was the first to explain several UFO sightings near his home on the Dee estuary at Holywell - and since then more people have been coming forward to share similar encounters on both sides of the Dee, including Liverpool, St Helen's and Bromborough...

Related: Halo-shaped craft

speech marks During the late 1960s in August, I, along with others, observed an orange spherical object while staying in Holywell. It was late evening and this object moved like a helicopter from east to west along the River Dee and A55 Expressway. It stopped above Greenfield then moved up through some low cloud and never reappeared. Also in October 1972 I was in Greenfield, on School Lane, on the hill overlooking the Dee. Again a bright orange ball of light appeared moving slowly east/west following the same A55 route again resembling a helicopter, only this time I was much nearer to observe just how odd this was!

It was no helicopter, moving slowly and quietly the object passed my observation point and stopped above the woods and road to the west. It illuminated the rooftops as it passed by and I could make out two intra rotating white circles in its centre. Then after it had stopped for seconds it shot back in a wide arc becoming a bright point of light. It headed towards the Wirral! Anyone seen anything similar in the area? I'd like to find out if some people living near Flint had numerous experiences of a more weird nature! speech marks

Me and my dad were walking back from my aunties and uncles on Sunday night. A bright orange light coming up from the direction of the Dee, came to view in the sky - we watched for 2 minutes and then it faded. Is it a meteorite?

On Wirral 16 years ago at Seacombe Ferry about midnight I watched with my 6 friends a light flying up and down at great speed and up and down too. The next day a policeman who was standing on duty at the pier head reported the same thing we had seen and it was printed in the local Liverpool Echo the same night.

November 6, 2008, I heard a slightly roaring sound and I looked out my front window and I saw something in the distant sky behind some distant rather high trees, it was about the shape and colour of an orange street light, but it was far too high and it was moving. I watched it until it disappeared.

Wirral and Cheshire, a few years back, I was followed by orange lights whilst driving around Wirral and Cheshire, during and through the night. I never found out what they were or where they came from, although I tried to but every time I stopped they either disappeared or hovered in the distance. I saw these orange lights over a period of several months. Please get in touch if you have been followed by these lights.

My neighbour has just shown me some phone footage he took last week (when Liverpool was playing!). Apparently, there were lights rising to the sky...not flares...and then disappearing. There were about 10 of them and then they disappeared. Then a load of jet-planes flew towards the scene! This was in Rhyl by the way, looking towards the sea I think.

My friend and her boyfriend have just rung me up and told me they've just sighted a 'UFO' from Hoylake over the sea (towards Rhyl, Wales). She mentioned something about a thing bigger than the moon with what looked like a square search light/reflection on the water. Creepy stuff!

On the 31 July 2008 I was in my garden looking at the night sky. I looked to the south to see a strange orange ball moving across the sky. I ran inside to grab my mobile but by the time I was back outside it had gone. It was moving in a straight line heading north east. It was strange as when I looked at it through the binoculars it looked like a solid body with what looked like flames abound it. It stopped dead at one point for about 40 seconds then started to move again. On the 3 August 2008 I was in my bedroom and decided to take a look outside my window which is in the roof. This was at 21.47 and there it was again the orange ball. This time it was a little more in front of me. I got my mobile and managed to get two clips of it. As before it was moving very fast and changing shape. Then at 22.06 I was in the garden recording a firework show that was in Gloucester park. The orange ball appeared again and this time I got it all on video on my mobile. In all 4 minutes and 25 seconds. I can safely say it's not... 1. A lantern as this was in the same place every time. 2. A plane, helicopter or satellite as when I saw it for the third time tonight there was also a couple of planes in the sky and there was a satellite too. This was much bigger than any other object in the sky. My computer is broken at the moment and I am at a loss as to how I can upload to the net. If I do manage to do so I will post the link for all to see.

Re:Paula - Liverpool...On Saturday evening - approximately 10:15pm we also saw an orange ball traveling across the sky. At first we thought nothing of it. Then shortly after we saw another one. It crossed the entire sky in about 10 seconds. About 10 minutes after that we saw two more flying in formation - very strange, definitely caught our interest. Then a fifth one appeared. We were able to get photos of this one. Extraordinary! Strangest thing I have ever seen.

26/07/2008-22.40-pm. Me and family were sitting out in the garden, when we saw an ORANGE light in the sky. It was like nothing I have ever seen before. They were silent and moving slowly then faded gradually and disappeared. First, we saw just one and didn't think anything of it then 5 mins later we saw 2 as if on display and then split apart from each other. If anyone else has seen anything in the north-west area please contact me via this page.

I remember when I was younger, it was a hot summer's day, and suddenly there was a buzzing noise coming from the TV. For some strange reason I ran outside to the front gate and looked up. I saw a large square triangle craft over the street, 3 other individuals saw the same thing that day, but when we tell people about it they never believe us. But we know what we saw was real and have never forgotten it.

I was at a party Saturday night by Sefton Park when I noticed a couple of lads looking at the sky and pointing to this orange glowing ball. It looked really close and was moving slowly and silently. I was so shocked that I ran to Sefton Park to get a clearer view, at this point it had grown smaller and looked much further away (this is in a matter of seconds). It was just hovering in the sky totally still and then faded in the same spot. I've never seen anything like it and I never normally believe in this sort of stuff, but I've been blown away. I'm not going to take my eyes off the sky!

I have seen lights like these a few times now. Each time around midnight. Twice I have seen them in groups of 3 and once I saw them in a group of two (my friend then later saw one). They move fast and quiet and they fade out at roughly the same point.

Just seen 3 orange globes hovering silently in the sky...low. I am still shaking. These were not helicopters. They were silent and each following the other slowly in the sky. It was pitch black outside, seen approx 8.30pm 4th April 08.

I stumbled upon this blog this evening after I got home. On my drive home at approximately 8.15pm tonight (26 March 2008) I saw 6 large lights in the sky, over the horizon. The lights were in a v-shaped pattern, hovering in the sky. The colour was orange, almost exactly the same colour as street lights, but larger and brighter (considering they were a few miles away). The lights twinkled, changed pattern (although they seemed to stay the same distance from each other, uniform in the sky), and within five minutes they were gone. I recorded them with my mobile phone but they didn't record clearly.

Just seen an orange light in the sky that was travelling really slowly and silently. I watched in amazement as this grew in size then got smaller. It repeated this before flying towards and over the Mersey where it stopped hovered and then disappeared out of sight. Not sure what it was, but it wasn't a plane or helicopter, this happened about 9.45pm, Tuesday March 17.

Me and a friend were driving back from West Kirby about 5 weeks ago. It was a Friday Night/Saturday Morning at 0200. We stopped at a junction and saw two orange lights in the sky. Initially we thought it was a very low flying plane with the light representing the wingspan, our view however was obscured by leafless trees. Once the object had moved into the clear sky we were able to identify two seperate orange lights (not one object we previously thought) they were moving at tremendous speed to our right (over the Dee Estuary) then suddenly the light on the right hand side diminished leaving one object clear to my veiw, 30 seconds later the remaining craft was no longer visible. Me and my friend were so taken back by this occurrence that we were literally standing in the middle of the road (outside the car) watching this amazing sight. There was no traffic and there was absolutely no sound coming from the sky. All in all I would say that the crafts were visible for around 90 seconds. If anyone else witnessed this sight please post.

I looked at the skies' stars and talked to my neighbour as she was outside having her last smoke before retiring to bed. Looking from my home in Croxteth in the direction of Liverpool we both saw a bright light like star pulsating. It went from green to red back to bright white. We said out loud when it changed colour and what colour it turned to just to confirm we were seeing the same thing. My neighbour ran inside and brought out a pair of binoculars. We took turns to piece and at first she thought it was a triangle shape, but when I looked and focused in it looked like a perfect circle pulsating and changing colour. It was some distance away and I could not zoom in any more than I had already. What was this? Was it the space station or was this too low in the sky for what I was seeing. Was it something that you may also have seen? Please post.

Following up on the comments of Nige from Hitchin, I was walking through the park in the cenre of Luton, Bedfordshire around 10.45pm on Saturday, February 9th and saw an orange light in the sky coming from the direction of Luton airport. What caught my eye was that the light was flickering and almost looked like flames - not the usual strobe and navigation lights one sees on aircraft going into and out of Luton airport. It is hard to say how high the light was, but I would guess around 1000 feet+. It passed over the top of me quite slowly, but there was no sound from it. About 15 seconds later a second flickering orange light came from the same direction and took the same path as the first one. I watched until they were out of sight, heading northerly. I was stone-cold sober at the time. I have wonderd if these were fireworks, or something else rational, but I find it hard to understand why they both took exactly the same path and were both silent. It was a clear, cloudless night with some moonlight and very little traffic noise. Consequently, if they were airliners, I would have heard the engines.

About 8.30 Wednesday 6th Feb 08, I was driving, turned onto Old Chester Road in Holywell, I saw something in the distant sky behind the old hospital, it was the shape and colour of an orange street light, but it was far too high and it was moving...

I was at junior school at the time in North Liverpool it happened in the late 1970s. I always remember being in the playground and I just happened to look up into the clear sky and noticed what looked like between 6 and 8 oblong shaped objects probably about the same height as a day to day jet would fly. They were all travelling in the same direction in a pattern similar to how geese fly. I remember pointing it out to a teacher who stood there open mouthed until these things had moved out of view. I know it was a long time ago but I just wonder if anyone else has any recollection as these things must have been seen for miles.

Liverpool - Just gone midnight Friday 12th (12.07am Saturday) about 100 huge red lights. Woke my son and we watched for 10 minutes as they passed right overhead. Went to the back garden with camera and stepped out. Nearly fell to knees Holywood style at what I saw. Patrick Moore wouldn't have survived seeing this! Report passed to Mara. Others must have seen. PLEASE report it. This needs to be looked into.
