Whirlwind or UFO?

Corwen town centre

Last updated: 02 January 2009

UFO investigator Margaret Fry received this story of a sighting over Corwen. However conflicting reports describe a "whirlwind".

A young couple and the girlfriend's mother were travelling along the A5 through Corwen and Llangollen when realising THEY were following a UFO.

The three say the craft - which emitted purple and blue light - stayed 30 metres ahead of them whilst hovering some distance off the ground for a distance of 12 miles.

On returning to the scene it was found that the speedometer marked 12 miles exactly where, some years earlier, a youth had claimed he had been abducted.

Interestingly, the three people in the car had been travelling from Oxford en route to Holyhead to catch a ferry to Ireland and had never visited Wales before.

They did not appear to be aware of the coincidence and neither did investigator Margaret Fry until she visited the scene to follow up inquiries.

The older woman passenger described being afraid after seeing what, at first, she thought appeared to be a small grey object flying in the sky on a clear night on July 5 1996.

Following newspaper reports Margaret was made aware of further possible sightings in which three separate car-loads of travellers thought they had became caught up in a localised "whirlwind" - three separate localised whirlwinds!

A builder and his co-travellers along with a photographer and friends had also been on the A5, but this time a dozen miles away at Oswestry, at about the same time as the couple and the woman's mother.

The builder reported seeing a "big whirling thing" which travelled across the sky and the photographer also described a whirlwind though his friends couldn't distinguish what it was.

Finally, a mother and two teenage boys had been travelling in a car near Holyhead when they too reported the strange sighting.

Myself and my girlfriend were walking on the beach at Llandudno about 1am on 1st Jan 2009. We saw two orange star-like objects moving very fast through the sky. Gradually losing their brightness, they faded out with a boom noise. We thought it was very odd as they did not look like ordinary shooting stars and we can't think what else they could be.

AT about 22:05 25th December 2008 at Hemel Hempstead I have seen a cluster of yellow lighted objects about 15 to 20 objects in the sky I have seen exactly from the Bellswaine Lane, Hemel Hempstead. This is the first I am seeing a cluster of bright yellowish coloured objects in the sky. I tried to tape it but I couldn't get it right and wasn't able to focus it as well. Very random movement appeared in the sky for about 3 to 5 mins and then disappeared. This could be airplanes but doesn't look like airplanes to me coz it was very close to each other and was very random movement. I just wanted to report it to the news agency.

25th Dec, just seen 4 glowing orange 'things' in the sky, pretty low flying and silent, they moved rather quickly from east to west. All 4 travelled the same line and vanished upwards until out of sight. I've read similar sightings. Did anyone else witness tonight's?

Re Hugh Jones, Llangollen. I attended the call in question. We did think it was a plane crash and we didn't find anything. It was later discovered to be a sonic boom from a concorde after which the flight plans were changed. This is recorded by the CAA and is available on its website. Sorry not ET!

What happened in September 2003 near Llanrhaeadr YM near Llanfflyin only a 15 minute drive from Corwen? I can't remember the date but remember a large bang which was heard as far away as Shrewsbury, some 30 miles away in Shropshire. I know a friend who was in Llanrhaeadr at the time of the event and his first thoughts and the villagers was that a plane had crashed into the mountains. He said that there was a large turn out of fire engines, police cars and ambulances, army and RAF rescue helicopters but after a long search nothing was found. But eye witnesses who live in the mountains report that a large side of a mountain had caught fire soon after the large bang.

This is NOT a whirlwind or any other naturally occurring phenonemon. It has a cloud of trailing vapour. It's a ball of vapour with a tail, it releases light and produces green coloured rainbow like auras to spin on the outside. It's a UFO, an Ophanin by name in ancient history. These do NOT have any dynamic force, they are not a wind but a ball of gas and vapour and light and the entity exists inside the vortex.

Interesting site, think that the locality to RAF Valley air base has been overlooked at such a facility the training for the operation of U.A.Vs is quite likley. This could provide a very good explanation for the increased sightings.

Have seen a tornado myself, just after a thunderstorm. Very weird the way it unwound. Tornados are accompanied by lightning so weird effects will be seen. Most people in the UK haven't seen a real tornado except on TV and most don't realise you can get tornados in this country (when I told people I'd seen one, they didn't believe me), so seeing one in real life would be a bit of a surprise. (It surprised me). Did see the alien rod programme. Looks like a load of rubbish to me. A lot of people seemed to be spending all their time watching TV channels and recording things that they claimed to be rods. It didn't add up to much, looked like insects, dust and moisture, the so called rod coming out of a tornado looked like lightning. A bit of wishful thinking there. Sells books too. There is a organisation in this country that records Tornado reports and other instances of extreme weather called TORRO (The TORnado and storm Research Organisation).

Some of you non-believers are crazy...the Oklahoma tornado of 1999 had a few ufo sightings just b4 it happened, and right before it died...in fact if u look at the tornado as it's passing in front of the church you'll see 2 ufos dart past the cross...some of you UK folk might want to get a video on that twister anyway...beat that.

I attended a fascinating UFO meeting at Gwynedd a couple of weeks ago which was presented by Yorkshire ufologist Russ Kellett. The hour three event consisted of a varied display of astonishing evidence from Mr Kellett, which seemingly went on to prove that a UFO most definitely crash landed on the Berywn mountains in 1974.

Has anyone seen that programme about Alien Rods, cant be seen with the naked eye, they travel to quickly. They only came to light when captured on for the first time on digital video camara, they kind of look like see through jelly fish flying through the sky. Not sure whether they are real or a blip on the film.

I agree with Baris Bicer. Lightning often happens with tornados. Coming from the US, this type of thing happens a lot.

OMG you're all crazy. Seriously, it was just a tornado. Stop reading into everything to try and find somthing spooky that isn't even there! Fair enough if you see a real life alien but not a whirlwind disguised as a UFO!

It is possible I suppose for a whirlwind to be generated by spinning rotor blades, where there is an action you get a reaction, a spinning object might do the same. Any scientists out there? Dave in Kent is correct in what he says. While working on the qe2 bridge on the Essex side I, along with 5 or 6 others, had a very narrow escape. It was a beautiful summer's day with blue skies and not a cloud in sight we were all working away about 100ft up on one of the supporting piers. Without any warning a terrific wind came out of nowhere, at the same instant rain poored out of the sky, buckets of it, a special German scaffold with a staircase was our way up and down. This time we were on our way down as fast as possible. We quickly made for shelter against a finished pier, by now the wind was ferocious, and still it poured, none of us sensed we were in the centre of a tornado, as we sheltered by the pier a terrific grinding metalic sound was heard. The wholle scaffold was ripped away from the top where it was fixed in place, a safety officer would have checked the fixing so it gives an idea of the forces at work that day. If it was a ufo it should be more careful.

The UK gets tornadoes as well you know, a rather nice one was gliding alongside the M25 once, no lie and there were many reports to back it up. Then there was the one off of the coast of Hastings, which stopped just short of coming ashore AND was featured prominently on the news. There has been many a tornado in the UK, it's thought that most of them happen in the Highlands where the population is less dense and so not many people see them. It's not just the US that are lucky enough to get em, we can get ripped apart by them as well in the good old UK. It's also what I believe it probably was, it may have gathered some debris that would have been flying around in all kinds of directions on the outer vortex and so I believe that this may explain the 'lights' as well, particularly if it was reflective/coloured material. Also, it is not uncommon for 'clusters' of small 'whirlwinds' to form, in fact recent research shows that even the very large tornadoes that we see on the TV a lot actually often contain several 'mini' tornados, fascinating stuff nature isn't it?
