This may not be as far-fetched as it sounds. Today, there are miles of tunnels navigating deep within the hill, a relic from the industrial past. I know that the tunnels come very close to the castle and because of the gradient of the hill all floors could lead into them.
What was the need for a connection to the mining levels is unclear. The time of the castle's construction was at the end of the long Napoleonic War (1793 - 1815), perhaps the threat of French invasion was still in the minds of the castle occupants. Maybe the tunnels provided a hidden escape route that could have led them far away into The Great Castle wood or even the adjoining hill of Tan y Gopa to safety.

My uncle Bob was driving home one night past the castle grounds when he saw a man running ahead of him. As he drew level with the man he was surprised and more than a bit scared to find that the man stayed alongside the car, even though he was going at a good 40mph - which got a lot faster as he took fright - but didn't shake him off until he got clear of that stretch of road. Very odd - he hadn't been drinking, either.

Gwrych castle was lovely in its hey day as I remember it in the 60s as I went up with the local school at the time. With its marble stairs and red carpet plus the train there which isn't there any more. Not sure about the track though. Yes have heard about the ghost there plus tunnels too.

I am so pleased to see the progress being made at Gwrych Castle. As a long term supporter of the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust (gwrychtrust.co.uk), I am following the progress of the castle's restoration very closely and well done to the trust for working so diligently in their support to the castle and the consequent developments as a hotel. An excellent effort and I am sure the Gwrych Trust will keep up their determination until the last brick is in place and we can once again visit this fantastic location.

We discovered the castle after walking all the way round the hill. We also managed to gat down the grand staircase and throughout most of the rooms. At no point did we feel spooked or sense the slightest paranormal activity.

I think that the tunnels were an escape route into the mines, but you don't want your enemy to follow you so what's the point unless of course you have a device in place to collapse your escape tunnel after you have passed, thus disabling the pursuit of your enemy...This may be why the tunnel cannot be found!

Me and my mates went on the corridor by the marble staircase and we saw a white figure hanging from a post.

I was with my mates in Gwrych Castle. We go there nearly every day and one week we went down the grand staircase on a Saturday and I saw the lady grey 3 times. Two days later I went to the castle again with my mates and I saw the lady grey for the forth time in one week. PS When I went to the castle with my mate I heard the headless horseman.

My friends and I camped near here and we saw a fox run down a hole. We shone the torch down and could just about see there was a passageway there, about 3 foot below it. There was a smell of pesticide down there but we thought nothing of it.

Alright all, did an investigation at Gwrych castle at dusk on the 4th Oct this year 2003. I certainly felt spooked. Couldn't believe it when we got the photos back, about half of them have paranormal activity present/orbs/apparitions. Lots of activity in the field of corpses. Anyway great site.
