Dogs of Darkness

country road

Last updated: 08 January 2009

Paranormal investigator Richard Holland submitted stories about incidents involving so-called Dogs of Darkness in NE Wales - and now your stories are coming in from around the world...

"Like one that on a lonesome road doth walk in fear and dread... because he knows a frightful fiend doth close behind him tread"

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

speech marks The fiend Coleridge had in mind was almost certainly one which frequently crops up in Welsh folklore - the Gwyllgi, or Dog of Darkness. These terrifying apparitions took the form of a huge hound with a shaggy pelt and great glowing eyes. The favourite haunt of Gwyllgi were lonely roads at night.

A lane in the parish of Marchwiel south of Wrexham, NE Wales, called Lon Bwbach Ddu (Lane of the Black Spectre) probably recalls such a haunting. An encounter near Ruthin with one of these hell hounds was recorded by T Gwynn Jones in his 'Welsh Folklore and Folk Custom' (1930). He says:

"My grandmother declared that as she and my grandfather were riding on horseback from Ruthin one evening, in passing a roadside house, the nag suddenly shied and pressed to the hedge. At the moment a very tall mastiff was passing on the other side. My grandfather who rode behind saw nothing and his horse had not been startled. They had just come to live in the district and only got to know afterwards that the house had the reputation of being haunted."

A more alarming adventure was had by a Mr Edward Jones when he was returning home late one night from a fair at Cynwyd, near Corwen. "The Black hound of destiny", as he called it, chased him across the moor, literally dogging his footsteps, keeping just behind as he hurried along. He said it was "a beast of fearsome visage and blood-shot eye".

At any moment he expected to feel its jaws clamp upon him and he suffered terrible anxiety "as in the horrible, cold sweat of a nightmare". The dreaded climax never came, however, and when, nervous and exhausted, he eventually reached his farm gate, he found the beast had vanished. speech marks

I went to a graveyard at night to show my friends there is nothing to be scared of. I saw bright glowing red eyes 10 foot away from me, when I focussed in the eyes moved up and I could see the body of a big wolf, it had a long shaggy coat and tall. It then turned took about 4 strides away from me and vanished. I've lived in the country my whole life and have never seen anything like that.

Me and some of my friends were recently on the Duke of Edinburgh scheme in the Berwyns. At about 11-11.30pm we were just sitting around outside out tents, with our little stoves on when these two huge black dogs ran down by the river. And I mean HUGE! We were scared stiff and didn't move until they had moved on. They didn't seem to notice us, but it was still a scary few minutes!

These dogs are not the spawn of the devil but of the energy that roams around you all the time. These hounds sometimes appear on their own as in some myths state but these hounds are normally summoned by a bm (blood magic) user. These hound are normally used in the hunting of pure blood vampires. One such incident that is well known is the staking of Vlad Dracula himself but what is not known is the fact that he was in fact hunted using a shadow hound as is known to day. I personally have never had to use one of these horrors due to the fact that one of my friends is a pureblood

My mother's always told me stories about Death appearing as a big black dog, but I always thought it was a ruse to keep me from going near strays when I was little. Then I found out the dog was from a Welsh legend, and figured since her family's Welsh she heard the story from a relative. Last summer, though, a couple of friends and I were out walking round our neighborhood a bit late and we did run into a big black creature that jumped at us. One of my friends thought it was maybe a possom, because it had reddish eyes that glinted like a cat's in the dark. I told my mother about it about a month later, and she got really shaky, and said that she had relatives and friends in the town she grew up in see a big black dog like that a little before they died, and that's what the stories were supposed to reference to. I'm obviously not dead, here a year later. One of the friends I had with me that night suggested it's a curse or something that followed my family for generations. I'm hoping she's not right...

I went on holiday to Wales, we stayed in a cottage in Amlwch. We were walking down a lane when we heard growling, turned around, it was a big black dog with red eyes and all teeth showing - it looked like it was floating - it was so high up. I was with me mum and son and son's girlfriend who was pregnant at the time. We stood there in shock then began to run. We all laugh about it now but, at the time, it was scary.

Some time ago my brother was returning home late at night to Henllan near Denbigh, north Wales. As he slowed to negotiate a road junction he saw in his headlights a huge black hound with an enormous open mouth and glowing eyes. Of course the glowing eyes could have been the result of the reflection from his headlights but he swears that this dog was of an unearthly origin.

I love all the black dog stories but I was reading a shuck story and it was pointed out that the stories are always around places people could have a reason that thay didn't want other people going, eg. the shuck has a lot of sightings near cliffs... a story of a devil dog would definitely keep your kids away from playing around there or back in the day when pirates were around spreading a tale of horror to keep possible witnesses at bay.

The Gwyllgi will haunt your dreams. It, and its Dark Age cousin Cwn Anwn (the old Welsh underworld hounds) and Bythead y Fall (the Evil Hound), are all part of ancient Welsh myth and legend: but are more than myth - they are FACT! Look 'em up in the Sources. The Mabinogi relate tales about them going back 1,500 years. They are part of our Celtic heritage going back 3,000 years, long before Christ was born. They are our pagan deities, the servants of Rhiannon, Epona, Cornunos and the other true Welsh pagan gods. Our streams, lakes and woodland are their homes, the craggy mountains of Eryri and the broad open ranges of Hiraethog their spiritual homelands. Stone circles and menhirs, forsaken by our new Christianity forsook them; relegated them into the darkness of civilisation. But they remain, worshipped by their servants; adored by their handmaidens and revered by their true believers. Their day will come. The true religion of our forefathers will return and stand proud over the ruins of Christianity, Islam, and all other modern religions. Behold; the day of GWYLLGI will come!

Daniel from Connah's Quay, I know these spectres exist. They are real, don't believe they are not. I and my friends have gone out and discovered a harrowing reality out there. I will be back to tell you more as soon as I understand what the hell's going on. They are real. All I can say is this is going on in the Wrexham and Deeside area... dogs that are not quite real, large dogs at that.

When I was seventeen, I saw a giant black dog with red glowing eyes. We were in the woods where a road used to be. The road had been closed for years. I walked off by myself away from everyone that was with me. Not even two feet in front of me, it was standing there, the giant black dog even growled at me. I heard it, I saw it. It was as big as a baby cow. I am not a person that is crazy, I would not normally believe in something that sounds so outlandish and made up. But I know that it was there. These things do exist. I ran as fast as I could, screaming back to my friends. I have heard that bodies have been dumped in that area. (One I heard about on the news.) We used to ride horses back there and they would just stop, and would become very frightened, for no apparent reason. I have heard that the old timers say that devil worshippers used to frequent that area. There is an old house back in the woods there also. This is a very wooded area, by a river.

I only just moved to Wrexham and only last night I went to Erddig not far from Marchwiel and I knew at that instant something was wrong. I am sensitive to paranormal activity. I'm normally happy walking in the dark but last night I froze and I was terrified holding on to my fiance like a baby. OK I didn't see anything but I knew that something untoward was there!

Is it true that if you look into a hell hound's eyes you die by the end of the week? I'm sure that is what Derek said on Most Haunted, but then so many people on this page have seen its eyes to know they glow red, is the part "if you look into its eyes you are dead with in the week" just a made up add on or is it true? Please can someone tell me! I am reading - into the Dragons Lair at the moment about all the ghostly goings on etc in Wales, it has mentioned the hell hounds but nothing about looking into their eyes.

I've had one with dark silhouette and red glowing eyes. They travel in threes. The other I can feel but not see, that's Buddy, and looks like a little girl about 8, in an old flannel granny gown with the nice old lace, very long hair. They protect me from human or anything else, they have bruised people's throats from choking them if someone was cruel or was going to hurt me.

Come to mysterious Suffolk and hear about the devil dog of Blytheburgh, an otherwise attractive village on the A12 near to Southwold. Versions vary - the essentials being that about 300 years ago a service was in progress in the Parish Church while a violent thunder storm was in progress. Suddenly the North door burst open and, accompanied by thunder and lighting, a huge dog (with all the necessary equipment - red, fiery eyes and bloody fangs) ran down the length of the aisle, killing two worshippers. It turned and left by the South door which was closed and locked - the terrified worshippers later found the animals claw marks burned into the door AND THEY ARE STILL THERE. Come and see for yourself - these wonderful Suffolk people will make you very welcome (and it will help our tourist trade!).

Probably the most famous Black Dog story is the MODDEY DHOO from PEEL CASTLE on the Isle of Man! Check out the full story on the Manx heritage website! Also it's not the only phantom pooch that haunts the island, several other folklore tales relate to ancient sites, roads, churches, etc. Fortean Times magazine has a wealth of information about this type of ghost on its website!

When I was a kid me and my friends found a huge black dog. We called the pound and was given the number of his owner. When we called a woman picked up, she said that she didn't know what we where talking about, she never owned a dog. We let the dog go. We spotted the dog several times after this, we tried to follow him but once he turned the corner he would vanish. We split up to find him, none of us could find him. A few days later my friend spotted him again, he followed him on his bike. The dog ran slightly ahead of him. Turned a corner and vanished again. A neighbor saw him, followed him in a car, vanished again. We never saw him again, we call him Ghost Dog. I'm sure it's not the same as this black dog in the stories I've read here, it was just weird that no one could follow him, we were never far away from him. He would just vanish.

When I was 9 me and my friend were sitting up late at night and from across the room we saw a black shaggy dog the size of a calf walk from one side of the room to the other. Before it disappeared into the wall it turned its head, the only way we knew it saw us, its eyes glowed red and its canines were dripping with spit. It wasn't hefty like a real dog, it had really long legs and a huge head. I still see it after 7 years. It has an attitude about it but never growls or looks menicing. I've read up on Black Dogs and most sites say they are there to guide spirits to the after life, mine seems different. It never walks or moves, it just stays stationary, as if it is observing me.

As scary as it sounds, I was driving with my boyfriend on a date one night. We had to take a back road due to the fact that there was a road closed. As we were turning a corner, there suddenly appeared a black, red-eyed dog shining in the headlights. My boyfriend slammed on the brakes and swerved to miss the dog. When we looked back to see if we hit it, all that was left were pawprints in the dirt.

I had the most terifying dream Sunday night about a huge black dog. In my dream I was walking by my window of my basement apartment, and I saw the biggest and blackest dog(resembled a german shepard/coyote/big as a pony) walking slowly, glaring at me. It was very long had jet black hair and very tall. I remember thinking that it was a hell hound in my dream, but then I decided perhaps it was the devil himself. I called for my Bf to come see, he came to the window with his mother (who was in my dream at my house as well) and then the dog was at the window, growling to get in. We then ran to our bedroom, but his mother was left behind, where she was attacked, and all I could hear were her screams. The dream scared me to death. I used to be a christian and for many years have struggled over leaving my faith, I felt it was the devil showing his grips on me, as of recently I decided to go back to church and renew my faith. The scariest part of this whole dream is I had my mother over for tea today and told her about the dream, and she told me she had a similar dream about the same dog on Sunday night(the same night as mine!), only hers attacked a pot belly pig and she got away too. I am forced to believe that this was a demonic if not the devil himself who visited us both that night. I fear what may happen now as a result. (This is truly for real I only wish I were making this up) I would love anyone to respond if they know anything about these dogs. Are they the devil, hellhound? Does it signify a terrible event about to take place?

Hi there, On my friend's 18th we were walking to her place from a pub and she said she could see a dog up on a hill to the right of her but when I looked I saw nothing. The next day Emily came round and told me that she's seen the black dog again so we went back to the hill and sure enough there was a large black dog sat at the top (sort of alsation looking) and when it looked at us it had the eeriest pale blue eyes, it ran down the hill and disappeared, we never saw it again.

Dingos, Tyler T. from West Virgina, re wild dogs of Australia. They were wild when they came to Austraila. Alpha is the first letter in Latin. The Alpha will lead the middle wolves into hunt. When they get their catch the leader will eat first then the middle dogs and last the Omega. They keep well order in their pack and if a wolf misbehaves too many times he is tossed out of the pack.

There are certain stories that are global and ancient that have been past down over millenia and this is one of those. Perhaps the origins of these tales is in Africa? The one I've heard of repeatedly is Black Shuck, a legendary hound from Devon and the South West of England. On a different note, someone I knew had a crossbreed Rotweiler/Doberman, it looked the epitomy of the hound of the Baskervilles, huge, muscular and intelligent. Unlike the Baskerville hound it seemed friendly, although I would imagine if anyone had attacked his master or broke in they might not have lived to tell the tale. I am 5' 2" and when it jumped up and put its paws on my shoulder it was taller than me.

In 1982 I was passenger in a lorry driving through Lincolnshire at about 01.30am. As we turned a corner I looked into the darkness, the headlights picked out a shape in the shadows of the hedgeside. I steered as the shape formed into a big black dog, slowly walking into the road. The dog stopped then turned its head towards us. As we got closer I saw it had no eyes or features, just like looking into a big black dog shaped vivid shadow. We looked on in disbelief as it disappeard. In 1992 I heard a documentary on Radio 4 named chasing black dog, a man made a sighting in the same area.

I was taking my dog for an evening walk when I had the strangest sensation. Out of the darkness a huge black dog came charging towards me. I froze in terror as it leapt into the air. I covered my face with my hands, for a split second I thought I was going to die. I stayed with my hands on my face for some time waiting. When nothing happened I lowered my hands and the dog was gone. I was all alone except for my jack russell who was standing beside me with her hackles up growling at the spot where the dog had been.

The fact that people are mixing-up ghosts with Black Dogs suggests a lack of research on the part of some contributors. I suggest that the people who are interested or believe they have seen these things read some of Andy Devereux's later works on the connection between shamanism and such creatures. They do exist, but extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Some of the accounts here ARE extraordinary. Some are banal and probably misperceptions with ordinary causes, ie driving at night and a large dog runs across the road - how much time do you have to actually see it properly? Those who profess to believe in werewolves or devils have yet to realise that they live in the 21st Centruy and not the 14th.

i was driving back frm my mothers one night in llay as i drove past the cemetery coming 2 the brow of the bradley dip there was an incredibly large dog/beast. it just stood looking straight at my partner and i. despite me sounding my hor,n eventually i swerved 2 avoid it when i looked in my rear view mirror it was still there looking at my car. very freaky indeed but my fella being a sceptic put it down 2 a genetic defect when the dog as he called it had been bred but why did it continue 2 stand in the path of my moving car? the more i recall it the more eerie it seems

It's strange, I know, but we had to write a suspense story for English. I just happen to write about my main character seeing a red eye through a crack in a fence at night, all alone. At the end of the story, she sees the dog-black with red eyes. He disappears as soon as she blinks. I looked the dog up on the Internet, checking to make sure that a black dog with red eyes did exist. And guess what? I found this site. Pretty interesting. Maybe they're spirits trying to tell those who see it something important. I don't know. Something like that. :)

I have had the same experience with a few of my friends. We were all coming home one night, driving through the lanes in Bersham in her blue van when suddenly a black figure which looked like a big dog or a very large cat threw itself across the road. I asked everyone did they just see that and they said yes. My friend Lyndsey put her foot down very fast.

I am a Christian woman and I know that there is a spiritual darkness. On my way home (My 2 children were with me) from a thanksgiving dinner, a black dog ran towards my car. This dog came from nowhere and I hit it or at least I thought I did. I could see the dog's face clearly as it ran towards the car. My son saw it too. My daughter felt the hit. When we looked back there was nothing there and when we got home we looked at the front of the vehicle and there was no blood and no damge to the car. It truly freaked us all out. After it happened we pulled over and just sat in the car and cried. It was an evil experience. I don't talk about it but just told my boyfriend and he said there were other people who had experienced seeing black dogs. I was suprised and decided to look it up. Sure enough I am not the only one!

Ive always believed in these Black Dogs...I used to live in a quiet Country Village, and often finished work around 1am, and used my Motorbike to get home, which meant riding about 5miles thru pitch-black Country Roads... One night, as i passed a crossing, i noticed something to my right about 20feet up the road opposite..It was a large black animal which was just stood in the middle of the road, and as i passed the crossroad, it must have heard my motorbike, as it bounded over the hedge, and was gone!! I believe this was actually a wild panther type animal, as the local police had seen it, photographed its footprints, and there were reports in the local news of sightings, but it reminded me of how vunerable i was on a motorbike, as i kept imagining a huge black dog of death would come running out of the woods & chase me down...... I NEVER went that way again, and went home via the dual-carriageway which made the journey longer, but safer!!! Gary

One night late I was driving home alone from Reno Nevada to The foothills of Northern California. It is about an hour and a half drive west on Hwy. 70, through Dark Canyon. The Hwy snakes along the feather river. At around 3:00 am I finally started to come up out of the canyon and was driving up a ridge which over looked Lake Oroville. On the horizon line I could see a huge shape. I remember thinking to myself, "That is a big horse". As I started to crest the top of the hill, on the right there was a gate to a dirt road and standing on it's hine legs, was.... All I can say is it looked like a huge, muscular Black Dog. With Green Glowing eyes. All of a sudden, everything started to move in slow motion. The creature looked deep into my soul, let out a God awefull howl, (or something), and without touching the fence, leaped at my Truck. I was doing around 60 mph and as he leaped I put my foot to the floor, the creature hit my truck just behind the passenger window, I swerved almost lost control but managed to keep going. I looked in my rear view mirror, and the creature was right on my bumper. Still howling that god aweful sound. I remember looking down at my speedometer and I was going 90 mph and it was maybe two feet off my bumper. Next thing I knew, it was gone without a sound. Needless to saw, I never slowed down or stopped at a stop sign. When I got home, no-one believed me. Eventhough I had an oval dent, over 18" long and 10" wide in the triple wall steel Cab corner of my 1969 Ford 4x4. It has been 10 or more years since my sighting, but it is still in my soul like it was today.

My grandma, 83 now, told me this story recently. She has always been a plain, hardworking woman and would never lie or make up stories. During world war II she lived with her parents and sisters in a small village, in a house by the road. One day German soldiers killed a few Russians and burried them by the crossroads. From that day every night at around midnight a big, black dog appeared on the road. It was always running to the crossroads dragging a big, diggling chain behind him. My grandma saw it only once, and then she was too scared to peek behind the curtains. The dog appeared there for five or six months, it was seen or heard by nearly everyone in the village. One night a few boys were coming back form a party, suddenly they 've heard the diggling chain from a distance behind them. They turned around and saw two red eyes glowing in the darkness. They fled to a nearby house and watched the dog as it ran past them. After nearly half a year the villagers asked a priest to come and bless the ground where the Russians were buried. It all stopped as suddenly as it began. We have another similar, but much more popular story in Poland. There is a castle in Ogrodzieniec, where every night a giant, black dog is running, and it's also dragging a chain with him. It is said to be a ghost of a sadist lord who lived in the castle ages ago. The dog had been seen by many witnesses, it is said to be as big as a small horse. There were even pharanormal investigators sleeping in the castle, and one of them dreamt that a big dog comes to his lying body, sits on his chest and tells him something (he didn't want to tell what it was). He didn't wait until morning to leave the castle... Personally, I believe there must be something about those ghostly dogs. Maybe one day we'll find out more about them.

To Dave from Gwyddelwern, Thank God for your explanation. For a while there I thought I had come accross a fiendish talking dog. Islam has an explanation for these creatures and basically says that these dogs are actually devils in dog form. "When one of you stands in prayer, what definitely constitutes a barrier for him is an object placed in front of him of the same height as the back of a camel-saddle. If it is not in front of him and of the same height as the back of a camel-saddle, then some [stray] donkey, or some woman passing, or some black dog will cut off his prayer." I said: "O Abu Dharr! What is it that makes a black dog different from a red or yellow dog?" He replied: "O dear cousin! I asked Allah's Messenger -- Allah bless and salute him! -- the exact same question. He said that the black dog is a devil."

Hi everyone, these dogs are truely scary. I have never seen one during conscious state but I've seen them in my dreams. If I'm walking outside in my dream - anywhere (moors, woods, main road), and this black dog appears it normally just watches me, and I'm absolutely petrified of it. BUT if I'm inside my home and I see it outside I'm so petrified that I close my curtains and peek out at it to make sure it's walking in the opposite direction of my home, but somehow it always sees me from afar (across car park for example). After seeing me it trys to get to me thru my bedroom window and says something like stop looking or mind ur owm business type sentences, it has a male voice...but no matter how weird all this is, these are only a dreams, but I don't understand why I see them so often and why they all act and when they speak have exactly the same voice. P.S the first time I saw the dog in my dream was when I was about 6 years old, In this dream I looked out the window to see two dogs fighting - A brown friendly looking one and a black evil looking one, it appeared the black dog was attacking the brown dog, so me being the hero had to shout 'hey leave him alone pick on someone your own size' At this moment the black dog looked up at me and said 'OK I'll get you instead', then it jumped up to my half opened window and tryed to get into my room to attack me' Then I woke up terrified.

It's all very interesting, but I have enough scary dreams without walking down dark lane or in the woods at night. Been to Wepre park, lovely place but that was on a sunny afternoon.

These dogs exist, at least the ones that started the legends do. They are a rare type of Mastiff. Huge and black. I know of a gentleman in South Wales who breeds these dogs. I beleive he is the last person to have these dogs. I am hoping he will sell me one soon. I'll keep you all updated.

About 10 years ago me and two mates stopped on a bridleway for a smoke safely in a car when we all saw this creature come running down the left of the car. The best way I can describe what we saw is of a deer-like dog with red eyes running unlike any thing we know. Startled from what we all saw we drove off. The creature vanished in thin air considering we had about 200 metres of dirt track behind us it was nowhere to be seen. This may sound far fetched but believe me this was something paranormal. PS we were not stoned in the slightest we know what we saw that July evening.

You have to hear gwyllgi to know how its pronounced, Kind of half spitting. Me and my bf we're walking back from the pub one night about 4 weeks ago. We saw this big thing and the end of his lane, it looked like a cross between a hyena and a wolf. Big and black.I asked him what it was and he went on some spout about dangerous dogs been let loose and stuff trying to scare me, and i laughed it off and walked up his drive. But the more i think about it the weirder that thing looked, this could be an explanation.

In May 1997,I was helping a friend rescue his collection of vintage motorcycles from his former marital home in Wales, all we had was a 40 yr old Bedford panel van. we got lost in the early hours, near Baschurch, Shrops. I was struggling to get us back on track when a huge dog appeared in the road as i rounded a bend, i swerved to miss it & lost control, the dog was not unlike a black German Shepherd, but with ears that hung down, & taller than the bonnet on the van, Great Dane sort of height, the weird thing was that it didnt move out of our path, just seemed to remain just two or three feet ahead, staring straight at us, even though the van was all over the place, our own dogs were going mad with fright in the back, but they were getting chucked about! I managed to stop short of a stone wall on the other side of the road, thinking I'd killed the big dog & wrecked the van, the van was ok, & there was no sign of the dog, so I carried on, it was only when i tried to figure out what happened that it stopped making sense. I may ride an old British motorbike, and did 5 years at art college, but please dont make assumptions about the kind of mushrooms i eat for breakfast!

When I was a boy of 7 or maybe 8 we had a black lab that had been hit by a car while we were on vacation. Several months later I had a waking nightmare that rattled my young mind. I told my parents that the dog, named Rosie, was staring at me from outside my ground level window. I remember how big, red and sad looking the dog's eyes were and how it didn't move them at all from my own gazing eyes. I was scared when I went back to to show my parents, but the dog had disappeared. Since that time, I have been surprised to occasionally find myself accompanied by two black dogs who have followed me while I am out walking or hiking alone. Although I have been bitten and threatened by other dogs before, these black dogs have never attacked or even growled at me. I don't believe that these particular black dogs were aggressive (to me anyway), though they have ventured close by, sometimes walking beside me as if I were their companion. I know it sounds bizarre, but each time I've seen them, they've always looked like the same exact dogs (except they have brown or yellow eyes, not red like the one from my "dream"). Just thought I'd share my experience though I doubt there is any paranormal significance.

I have seen a shadowed, cloudy-like black dog ever since I was a baby. I think it protected me and kept me company. I'm nearly 16 now, but I stopped seeing it at around 9. I wish I hadn't. I wish I had a picture of him. And I'm sure it was a him somehow. I call him Thor. It might be connected to the dog star. I have had dreams about him since he left me to fend for myself. I miss him. He was no pet. Just a guardian. My stepdad knows someone who saw one. It let them know someone had died, and when she was buried, it disappeared. My great-great-great irish grandfather had a guardian grim as well. I am very interested in these dog forms. Please don't think them fake. Don't kill them. Don't capture them. Don't turn them into lab rats-if you can catch them. Someone get them on film and study them as you would with wolves!

It's true that werewolves appeared in history dated back to at least the 1500s. But what else I'd like to know is how come these different cultures that have spotted the werewolf got the same physical description.

H.D. Black; Yes! I have heard of dogs with side-opening mouths. I have a friend who encountered a pack of them at a camp in Missouri. His story about the dogs is quite fantastic... so fantastic, I wouldn't give credit to whatsoever, except it's not really in his character to tell gigantic stories, let alone try to pass them off as true. 'm thrilled I stumbled upon your post, because the story of the dogs has always intrigued me, and I've been curious to find if others had information on them, as well. How did you hear about them yourself?

I know someone from work who lives near Wepre and he tells me that at night the park gates are locked. To keep people out OR to keep things in. It makes you wonder that the local authorities want to keep something from the public. Hells teeth, do we have our very own X-file on our very doorstep. We have a right to know you know!

if they were dogs with rabies they wouldn't have lasted this long because after a few months the rabies disease kills the animal it has infected. Granted that it may have passed the disease along to its "friends" but I believe in all of this and I think they are real (but have not seen them).

When I was 21-22 years old I quite often sensed and saw a small dark coloured, furry something walking just behind and to my left side. There was never a feeling of fear more just "what are you and what do you want? Have not seen it since. Have heard some strange noises at night though. You get to know the night noises in the bush and they just don't belong here. Have lived on my own in the bush now for over 25 years. I think there are some things that pass by every so often and we get to see / hear them.

I've read if you dream about black dogs and their ghosts that is an omen something bad is going to happen. Have the people who have seen these dogs had a bad experience after?

Furthermore to these so called devil dogs we kept being told by the establishment over many many decades that wolves were driven out of britain centuries ago. to me that would be impossible due to the small size of the population. have these beasts gone to ground due to being persecuted by man and some may have taken on some kind of human form to fight back, hence your werewolf.just a thought.

Has any country folk told you about black dogs? They might have seen a dog at night in the woods and exaggerated by saying it was tall as a man, had red eyes and diasppeared?

I found this website looking for some answers to a dream I had about a pair of black dogs the other night, but when I read the story about the mastiff just now, it brought to mind a similar story in Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, which interested me. I tried to find out more about this experience which dates back to medieval times, but I could not find in any dictionary, a definition for this word that started with a "G", used in Jane Eyre to describe the ghost-like dog walking down a road, but I will let you know what word is when I find it again and maybe you can look into it for me. I think it might have been "Gytrash". I believe the dog that the storyteller's Grandmother and her horse did see, but that her husband and his horse did not, is a demon of some sort, and the Grandmother and Grandfather were on different spiritual levels - that's why she saw it, but he did not. Now, if only we knew why one horse steered away from it, but the other didn't appear to notice it. If the Grandmother's horse was a female, and the Grandfather's was male, then maybe it has something to do with a woman's intuition. I think women and animals, more often female animals have a sort of sixth sense about these things. We're able to see and feel things around us that others may not.

I'm no expert on this field, but I remember reading somewhere about Norse mythology and the Hound of Odin. As an emissary of their god, I believe it wasn't always regarded as evil. Can anyone expand on this?

I saw one of these dogs when I was driving alone 10 years ago. It ran into the road almost straight towards my car and rammed its head into the rear of my car. Hard enough to be felt but not enough to do any damage. I was scared for several minutes before I dared to stop the car and turn around to where it had happened. I could se nothing when I looked afterwards.

I was walking my border collie dog with my friends in Wepre Park, Connah's Quay. Suddenly my normally boisterous dog cowered and tried to run back the way we came. At least half a dozen dogs of different sizes, but all black, came from the woods and ran into our path. They merely stared at us, then ran to the woods on the other side of the path. My dog refused to go any further into the woods and was shaking (we were too..) We didn't notice that the dogs had red eyes. We didn't see anyone who could possibly be the owner of strange pack of dogs. We're hoping to go back into the woods when the weather improves to see whether the pack will grace us with there presence again...

This story/myth of the dogs of darkness is very intriguing. I lived in France, Area of Puy de Dome for 7 years and I used to go camping a lot around the local remote volcanoes and lakes where the forests where still untouched. However the locals used to tell us that they wouldn't come to look for us if we got in trouble, I never thought "why?". I own a Winchester 1901 rifle, like the one you can see in the old Western films. Well, one night, on a lake, while cooking with my friends, a massive black "thing" slid out of the woods and started moving towards us. Me and a Canadian friend of mine have received military training and we have both grown up far from the cities so we were more stupefied by this animal than scared. Everyone else (9 people) were petrified. I took the rifle and shot a couple of rounds in the air. We all pointed our flash lights to this animal and it just stood there staring at us. My Canadian friend shot an emergency torch right next to the animal, and it ran away. We went to bed that night horrified and intrigued. The next day we talked to a bartender in a local village and never in my life have I seen people more horrified than then, they went all white and through us out calling us "cursed" and "sons of devil". Later that week I learned that what we had seen wasn't rare except few people have had the guts to tell their story afterwards, or the ability due to being on life support. I could swear that whatever the animal was it was a mixture between a huge dog and a huge cat, but somehow it seemed friendlier than bears and wolves I have met before in my life. Whatever it was, I would love to get the chance to study it closer some day. That animal returns to me in my dreams every night.
