Lady Grey caught on camera?

Last updated: 16 April 2009

The ghost Lady Grey of Ruthin Castle Hotel has been seen by several visitors - but have Verne and Cindy caught her on camera?

Verne, Cindy and mist

Here, Verne explains more about the visit and shares a copy of the strange photo.

speech marks We had the experience of our lives as we stayed the night at Ruthin Castle. We arrived in the early afternoon and took advantage of the extra time by walking through the grounds and the garden burial plot of the Lady in Gray.

We took multiple photos because we both enjoy Gothic arches and aged stone walls. We wanted to have our photo taken at the entrance and had another couple use my camera (Olympus Accura Zoom 105mm). It was an overcast day so we had the camera set for auto flash.

During the photo we both felt a cool draft and we even joked about it. Later that evening after dinner we took another walk to the second floor since everyone on the tour said that the Lady patrols the upstairs floor.

We went about two doors down the hallway and came upon an open door. We thought that was odd since all the other rooms had their doors closed. We peeked inside and again we felt a cool draft. This time we promptly did an about face and stepped quickly down the stairs.

During the early morning hours we were awoken to the sound of a shovel digging outside our bedroom window (we were on the first floor). Needless to say, we slept with the bathroom light on the rest of the night. speech marks

More about Ruthin Castle hotel's ghosts

The website www.hauntedcastlesandhotels.com explains more about the historic building's ghosts and so does www.hauntingbreaks.co.uk.

There are different accounts of the story. One says the Lady Grey was the wife of a powerful man and she murdered his lover with an axe. Sentenced to death, she was buried outside the castle walls. Her ghost now apparently walks the battlements and the castle chapel.

Other sightings include a soldier and the spirit of a little girl. Unexplained noises, footprints and changes in temperature have also been reported.

Hey! We have done this in school, but my teacher who is now too scared to go there again slept in room 8, and there were footsteps on the floor above. So he went and told the recepionist, who looked up from her desk and said "I will sort it out" though when she checked who had the room above room 8, she replied "no one is in that room" but she went up and looked to find no one there, but during the night the footsteps turned to stomping and then stopped. 2 mins later there had been a man crying for help which was soon hushed by a women soothing (him?) with a quiet hum...soon the room went freezing cold and my teacher got so scared he left.

I stayed in the Castle this weekend. It is lots of fun. Check out the reflection of the lady of the house in the mirror in the drawing room. In the painting she is young. In the mirror she is old. The two people I was with at the time also saw her clearly. A trick of light? If you ask, the staff with take you on a tour of the dungeons and entertain you with their own stories of things going bump in the night. My bedroom life had a mind of its own. An electrical fault no doubt, but enough to quicken the pulse in the dead of night when no one is as brave as they like to think they are!

While visiting family in Manchester for a month last May, my daughter & I went and stayed at Ruthin Castle for 3 nights. Our room was right above the old Medieval Banquet Hall, and was the room with the most "vibrations". The first night about 10 minutes after getting into bed, I was wide awake, and found that when I tried to get up, I was pinned to the bed. I could not move my arms or legs. My daughter heard my breathing become very shallow and rapid, and asked "Mum, are you alright?". She quickly turned on the light, and suddenly I was able to move again. She said I was very pale, and I decided to go outside for some air. The desk person asked if I was alright when I was going through the lobby, and I said 'Yes, but I am just a bit weirded out'. He asked if we wanted to change rooms, but we declined. We took some photos while we were in bed later, and to our surprise, there is an orb in one. The room was pitch black, and there is no explanation for the orb - i.e. reflection etc. We heard a woman sobbing on each night, and we were told that people have heard the Grey Lady crying often. I am a very open-minded individual, and had an experience once before when I was 8 years old. Funnily enough, we were the only guests in all 67 bedrooms of Ruthin Castle that first night. Apparently the staff commented on this to each other, as no one could remember when they last had only 1 guest room occupied. It was an interesting visit. The gardener gave my daughter a long tour of the castle incl. the old ruins with the whipping pit, dungeons, Lady Greys grave etc. These areas are not open to the public for safety reasons and can only be visited with a staff member. We certainly enjoyed it there and hope one day to return. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone, and remember to ask for the room above the banquet hall. Apparently, this room was Lady Greys dressing room, and there was at one time a door in the wall directly behind the bed where I was lying, so she would have walked in and out there, and perhaps was just sitting down for a rest. Enjoy.

This photo reminds me strongly of one I took at home some years ago. It shows a reflection of the flash from some surface (I suggest a pool of water/puddle) out of (below) shot. The one I took showed a more defined outline but proved to be reflection from a polished coffee table.

I worked in the mediaeval banquets at Ruthin Castle for a few years as a lady of the court. Three of my colleagues had experienced strange things, one was pushed in the back as she came downstairs, another saw the top half of a lady in dark clothing in the presence room and another saw a vision in the corridor leading down to the banquet hall.

How can a thin mist "walk the castle battlements"? How can a thin mist appear as a soldier? How can a thin mist make noises? I've looked at this photo for 7 minutes - ghost? What ghost?

My sister and brother in law are in this photo at Ruthin Castle. My husband and I were with them on this trip. We had a ghostly experience during the night when we heard a loud shovel digging (as in a grave) and loud banging on pipes. It awakened us in the night. Sounded like the digging was at the foot of our bed. The next morning we looked out our window only to find there was a garden about 3 stories below. And when they started down that long hallway I took about 3 steps and turned back when the hair on my arms stood up. I would also like to comment that we have a similar photo of the same spot with my husband and Verne in the photo. Again, there is something "foggy like" around them. Eerily no other photos were so affected.
