Ghost hunting

Richard Holland

Last updated: 27 May 2008

Local author Richard Holland has become something of an authority on the ghosts of NE Wales.

Richard, of Mold, is the author of website www.uncannyuk.com, and a host of books, including Wales of the Unexpected, and research in the libraries of Wales has unearthed a wealth of curious stories which he has been able to draw on.

He believes that ghostly goings-on are something that science has yet to understand. Richard says that people's belief that a place is haunted could be related to some form of energy that has yet to be identified.

Richard explains using the case of staff at a laboratory who complained of an eerie feeling. "All of a sudden people started to feel nervous," he said. "They were looking over their shoulder or thinking they had seen something out of the corner of their eye."

But Richard says that it turned out that an extractor fan had been faulty and was emitting low frequency sound. Once the fan had been fixed, the ghostly feelings stopped. Water too can emit low frequency sound which could be used to explain hauntings in buildings if an underground water course could be detected.

So despite numerous tales of ghosts, the reality may be far from chilling although it could be a scientific breakthrough. "There could be mundane explanations," said Richard.
