Queen Street hauntings

Queen St, Wrexham, viewed through the webcam

Last updated: 21 July 2008

Martin Griffiths and colleagues want to know more about the ghost which haunts their shop on Queen Street, Wrexham.

  • Queen Street webcam
  • I have always been open minded about supernatural phenomenon. I have experienced some strange things, and lately most of them have occurred in the place where I work on Queen Street, Wrexham.

I am virtually convinced that the shop has some strange activity going on in there. Stock has a tendency to fall off the shelves of its own accord. For example, the other day three of us heard something smashing from one of the aisles.

We went over to find a dish and a tray which had fallen onto it from directly above. But there was quite a gap on the shelves between the two items.

Also, a previous manger had experienced bangs in the shop when they were on their own.

Another incident for me was when I was on my own. I went to get my stuff and as I was just coming down the stairs I heard what sounded like a shelf collapsing on the floor.

I went and had a good look around the aisles. It was clean and it appeared nothing had fallen.

Another weird incident was when myself and another member of staff were on the tills, and at some point I had felt something pull on the back of my t-shirt.

My first instinct was that it was the person on the till behind me so I looked around, but there was no one on the till so I disregarded it.

Somehow, me and another member of staff started joking around saying the shop was haunted, but then before I'd told this member of staff what had happened to me, she said she'd experienced the same thing.

That's the point when I began to become aware there was something not quite right about the shop. Since then I feel uncomfortable being on my own.

I would like to know if anyone has any history of Queen Street, Wrexham, which could explain these mysterious events.

I have only experienced ghostly goings on in the library in my old school - Gwersyllt County Primary School. I had the job of putting some books back, on my own, and on the other side of the room several books flew off the shelf and into the wall.

I work in Primark in Wrexham, and always feel a presence around me, especialy in the stockroom and the lift. It's quite an eerie place to work in.

I work in a large store in wrexham and we have had a new floor fitted. I work on this floor and always feel uneasy. I've heard footsteps, felt like I'm being watched and had clothing move aisles when the store has been closed and I have been totally alone on the floor. One Sunday I had heard someone walk across the floor. I turned round and saw a man standing in the middle of the floor dressed in blue work gear - not the store uniform. I stopped what I was doing to go and and ask if he needed help and he'd vanished. I went downtairs to ask if anyone had seen this man and was told no workmen were on site. In later weeks I mentioned this to a manager. He said he'd experienced various things in the old store and that a guy had died falling through the roof when the store was being built where it is now. I still feel uneasy about things and another lady who worked a shift for me said she'd heard banging and things moving in the warehouse. She was also alone totally on this floor. When she checked nothing had moved.

Hi, me and my boyfriend have had quite a few weird experiences in the Black Horse, Yorke Street. He has felt his cue being pulled when he's been playing pool twice, each time there was no one near him. I have been standing outside smoking when I've heard someone walking up the stairs and expected someone to walk past and into the pub, looked round and nobody was outside. One of my mates also felt as if something was outside so I happened to have my camera with me and took some photos one of which looks as if there's someone sitting on the empty bench and leaning on the table. I took another one to check whether it was the flash being reflected off something but had nothing on that one.

I work at 23-24 Hope Street, Wrexham, and we definitely think it's haunted, we've heard stories of someone falling downstairs and dying in there. I'd love to know more.

I work in BHS in Broughton and it's definitely haunted. As I work nights a lot of the staff leave about 9ish most of the time it's 8. There's noises at one end of the stock room that sound like a train moving. And there's a TV with a security camera for outside and it looks like there's black figures on there the shape of a person but no one is there. Also the shop floor is haunted as me and one colleague were at one end of store and the things that the signs are in flew off on to floor. It's scary in there after 8pm.

I live in Wrexham and my grandma and grandfather live next door to me. When I'm lying down on the couch in my house I see faces in the glass whilst I am watching T.V. Also, next door I see a ghost of an old man and stairs creaking when nobody is there.

I did some work experience in Thomas Cook on High street (thinks it's an insurance shop now.) I remember being in the kitchen at the back of the building and feeling something breathing on the back of my neck, and then giggle in my ear, it was so scary!Apparently the shop was haunted by a young prostitute, who when alive used to work in the alley behind the shop (in front of the parish church). Also things always used to go missing and be found in the cellar, tunnels run from the parish church under all the buildings on the high street - I think monks used to use them, but they've all been blocked up to stop people getting into each other's shops.

I used to live in Coedpoeth just outside Wrexham. When I was growing up we had weird knocks and bangs throughout the house and we would hear someone walking down the stairs late at night. We also saw shadows of people walking past the glass doors of the sitting room and go up the stairs. For years I was terrified to be in any room on my own and saw and felt some really creepy things. After we moved out in 1994 we went and took some pics of the house before the builders went in and you can clearly see the faces of three children in the upstairs window and an old gentlman in a bedroom window. It's weird because the house was derelict as it had been hit by lightning and the floors and stairs had collapsed. There is no way the children could see through the window as the top pane was approx 8ft off the stairs. I still drive past now and again and still feel uneasy as I did for all the years I lived there.

My sister was sitting on the train from Bettws y Coed to Blaenau Ffestiniog when a man came on at Dolwyddelen. He wore old fashioned looking clothes and wore a bowler hat.My sister watched him sitting straight in the reflection of the window and noticing his clothes in particular, just before the train was coming out of the big tunnel my sister got her coat on and got ready to leave the train. When she looked to see the old man he wasn't there, and there was no way he could have left the train.Weird, my great grandfather helped to build the Big Tunnel.

Quite a weird thing happened to me once, during my one-year stay in Wrexham. One day I came back from work and took the bus (one with a single door to get in). A woman with long red hair got in the bus, and smiled at me, and for some reason, it spooked me cause there was something weird about her. She was dressed in brown and faded yellow old fashioned clothes. Anyway, once we got to the 1st bus stop, I kept my attention to the exit door, waiting for her to get down. As she did not, I supposed she was still in the bus so I looked back. But she was not there any more, even though we had not stopped anywhere before. I asked one guy behind me if he had seen her, but he just didn't get who I was talking about. I might be wrong, but don't you think that's a little weird?

We bought our current home in 1980 and during the first few years here we saw a little old lady, with long grey hair wearing a nightgown on the landing outside our bedroom. Since our children were born she has not appeared, but we know she is here because she regularly rearranges things for us, especially when we least want her to.We like her, she is not a problem and we think she must have liked living here.

I used to work in MK One on Hope Street. There was always a strong sense of a paranorma presence. Once, when tidying clothes, I felt a cold shiver and my attention was drawn to a fleeting image of a man to the right of me. When I looked around there was no-one to be seen. There was always strange noises coming from the stock room, a colleague had also said she had heard a cry of a little girl coming from the corner of the stock room. Does anybody else have any experiences from this location, 56-58 Hope Strret, Wrexham?

Me and my mum were on a big field at the back of my house were we live. This women appeared to us asking us was there another way of getting out of the field. My mum said no there is only one exit to come in and out of the field. She said she was going to try to climb over the wall. My mum and I thought it was very strange for her to climb over the wall as she wasn't that young so we turned round to see where she was and there was no sign of her. I told my mum that she did look as if she was wearing a 1960s long coat and the colour was mustard.

My mum once had a strange experience in Wrexham, she was walking from the bus station towards Queens Square, as she got near the statue of the two miners, she felt a hand rest on her shoulder, she turned to see who it was thinking someone who knew her had caught her up, and when she turned around she found there was absolutely no-one else on the street!

I have recently relocated to the wrexham area and have in the past done several investiagtions around the wrexham area. I can indeed say that wrexham is haunted and some of the pictures and information we have gathered strengthens the argument for the paranormal. anyone wanting an investigation carried out, please visit our site for more details. www.midlandsupernatural.com

I've visited Wrexham and a friend used to work in a shop. One day she went into the changing rooms when she thought someone was in a changing room cubical. Only to find out that no one was in the changing room and the manager had reported seeing ghosts in the shop. This story interested me in the paranormal and have since investigated Barry and Barry Island for ghosts.

I work in New Wave hairdressers on Charles Street, people have told me that Charles Street is haunted. One day me and two other staff were having our dinner break when there were banging noises coming from the next room, they soon stopped after we got freaked out, then they started again and they started getin louder and louder then I banged back to where it was coming from and the noise suddenly stopped and that was the last we heard, for now anyways!

i used to work in primark and i always felt uncomforable in the store room on my own. i kept feeling short of breath as if i was being strangled. the lift would go up and down on its own and lots of staff spoke about seeing shadows in the lift. i dont know how true they are but rumour has it that when the shop living was shut down and before pirimark was opened a man broke in and hung himself in the corner of the store room. the corner where he died has now actually been turned into part of the shop upstairs where the shoes are sold.

My friend used to work in a shop in wrexham - where dorothy perkins used to be. And she used to be scared out of her wits by the goings on there. Ths stock room was above the shop and quite often staff would hear someone walking around up there, even when no-one was up there. There would also be a strong musty, stale beer smell on the stairs going up to the stock room, and if you were brave enough to use the upstairs toilet, there was often the noise of metal clothes hangers scraping on railings - again, no one would be upstairs. In the mornings, if she had the keys to open up, she would always wait for a colleague to arrive - never open up on her own!

I used to work for Dixons in Wrexham, until it got turned into a Monsoon. One of the older members of staff used to tell stories of a well dressed old fella who haunted the shop and he had seen, maybe it's connected to the Savers spook.

Hi I once encountered a ghost in a shop in Wrexham and was wondering if anyone else has encountered her. I was standing near the lingerie when an old lady came up to me and we began to chat. My daughter was with me and so was my little boy, just a baby and in a pram. It just seamed like a normal conversation but then she said something really odd and made a comment about someone trying to help her on the day she died. I asked her to repeat it and she did, word for word, then she bent down and handed a fifty pence piece to my little boy and at that moment my husband came over and asked who I was talking to and I said the old lady. He then informed me that there was no one there and accused me of talking to myself. This really spooked me and to this day he takes the micky out of me for talking to myself but I know I saw her and spoke to her and so did my daughter. As for the fifty pence when I tried to take it off the baby in case he swallowed it nothing could be found.
