Vigil at Plas Newydd

Last updated: 04 February 2009

Medium Paula Roscoe, a member of local paranormal group WISP, recalls the spirits she encountered during a vigil at historic Plas Newydd, Llangollen.

Plas Newydd is an historic house that was once owned by the so-called Ladies of Llangollen who caused a stir in society in the 1800s by setting up home together. Among their many visitors were the Duke of Wellington, Sir Walter Scott, and Wordsworth.

speech marksFive of our group arrived promptly at 5.45pm, Betty, Paul, Tony Jamie and myself as we were only allowed to stay until 9pm. We had also invited some of the employees to attend; there were eight in total.

Tony and Jamie walked around the hall taking EMF and thermometer readings, which showed fluctuations where there weren't any electrical objects. These readings would appear and disappear in the same spot; we could not find any reason for this.

As a medium, I am clairvoyant / clairsentient and clairaudient which means I can see, feel and hear spirits. Mostly what I felt during the investigation were various emotions and pains. In the Library I felt instant pain in my right shoulder and right temple area. As I stood within the Library I sensed someone coming in behind me, turning round expecting it to be one of our group, no one was there.

In the Oak Room I didn't like the vibrations. It felt oppressive and I began to feel quite dizzy and had to leave the room. At the end of the night, on comparing notes it was found that others had felt the same.

In the State Room I felt a man's energy very strongly. In fact, I could only describe it as 'in my face'! I kept getting the name 'Howard' I started to feel more pain, even breathless and it moved into my right lung.

In 'Mary's Room' I sensed someone in there with us, drawn to the left side of the fireplace. In the Ladies' Bedroom I felt nothing except peace, but on walking into the Exhibition Room I felt instant nausea.

Pressure increased around my lower jaw and a spirit moved my right hand upwards to cradle it. When this happens I am being shown how it was for someone else. Betty, who had followed me into the room, also felt quite sick and had to leave immediately.

Paul and I placed trigger objects around the hall - a blue star in the Dining Room, a blue candle in the Oak Room and a movement sensor in the Library. At this point we made sure everyone was upstairs, doors locked. We split into two groups, one in the State Bedroom, the other in the Exhibition Room.

I was in the State Bedroom and sensed strongly a military man. Very abrupt, stood no nonsense, a very proud man. When I asked him who he was he replied, "I've already told you, I'm Howard." He didn't take kindly to what we were doing calling it, "Stuff and nonsense!"

On entering the Dining Room we found the blue star had moved. We were delighted and thanked the spirits for that. The guests were eager for me to contact the spirits directly. After asking my spirit guide if this was acceptable, we decided to do an Angel Board, which would enable the 'audience' to see the spirits answering us. Myself, Betty and two employees sat.

Firstly we were talking to a lady called Olive, she wanted to go to the angels, but she couldn't. Then a lady came on whose name began with H, desperate to be heard, but very weak. She kept saying the numbers 4766777.

Then she said she died aged 76 in 1867, but felt she was confused. Then a Viv came on, she was a 'visitor'. She said Stuart lived here when she came in 1867, same as the other lady. She said she liked the house as it was and not much had changed in this part of the hall. (We were in the Dining Room) This lady said she moved the blue star, as it was pretty.

Suddenly my guide was warning me as an angry person was trying to get on. I was being warned about this 'Viv'. Then I sensed a child. A boy. I asked my guide Harry, to help him come closer and the child nestled into my left side. He spelt out Graeak, but we sensed the name Gareth. Again I was given the date 1867. It came out that this little boy aged six was in the stables when Viv caused something to happen involving a horse and the boy was killed. He desperately wanted to be with his Mummy, but Viv kept him with her because of her shame and anger and guilt. She blamed herself, but also blamed him as she was dismissed, losing everything and became bitter.

I asked for help that we could bring Gareth and his mummy together. I gave him a cuddle and held his hand as Viv was trying to keep hold of him. After a few minutes, I sensed a new spirit - Gareth's mother. I asked him if he could see her, he was so excited, he said yes and I allowed him to go and hold her hand.

Before she left, Gareth's mummy wanted to speak with me. I asked if they were at peace now and she answered 'yes'. It was a very strange experience for everyone, most were emotional as it was a wonderful moment, but we could also feel what could only be described as a battle!

Gareth's mother was shouting abuse at Viv and Viv was answering, both extremely angry. Gareth's mother was hurt that she hadn't been able to get her son until now. Viv was angry that we had taken Gareth from her and she would be alone. The language made me blush! Most of this was caught on the Angel board. By now I was drained, as was everyone else emotionally. My guide assured me that Viv would be helped when she was ready.

As for the other spirits we had contacted, I was told that now they had met us, they might feel more inclined to speak next time. We certainly caught a lot of activity during the evening.

Many orbs were caught on camera both inside and outside the hall. Everyone packed up and left at 9pm. I'm not quite sure what our guests were expecting, but I came away feeling wonderful. A child was now safely with his mummy. What else can be better than that? speech marks

To CF, Llangollen... You really need to pay more attention, the reply above mine that you refer to was written 1 month after I posted a reasonable question that was given a reasonable answer by Paula, so what's your problem? Logic would suggest comments are left with the most recent at the top and dated just in case some get confused.

I was born Plas Newydd. My father was the caretaker from the 1930s. We never heard or saw any sign of ghosts only us playing childish pranks on unsuspecting visitors.

What a load of rubbish. Plas Newydd was extended and then knocked down again. Why would ghosts only be there from the eighteen hundreds? You are making yourselves believe this nonsense.

I've always been taught by my mother that ouija boards are not safe, not inherently evil, just that they are an open doorway rather than a singular invitation. eg great aunty Millicent might be dearest aunty, however she may very well not be. We had a friend of the family had to have his house cleansed due to poltergeist activities which were becoming increasingly dangerous. Also, I am glad the child was finally reunited with his mother.

To M.R. Lincolnshire... Firstly the reply to your question was answered, pretty clearly I think just above your own comment! I believe it should on balance be pointed out now that should it be Ouija, Tarot or Crystal ball or good old fashioned tea leaves, what does it really matter? Surely it's just tools to help in concentrating energies. This is all down to personal belief as nothing is proven but as you claim to also have personal experience, I'm sure your advice will be duely considered but to sound as though you're doubting someone's abilities as a psychic based on use of a tool and making claims about your own abilities as someone able to give advice is alittle strong don't you think? Especially done in such a condescending way...

Hi all, just to say brilliant! It is always nice to have something confirmed and bless his heart - Gareth was a lovely little lad. As for starting up again Paul, you have my e-mail.

A nice story about Gareth, however, 1867 is not that long ago, records would still be kept on how the child died and were he is buried. Could anyone find this out?

After recently viewing the Most Haunted Crew at Plas Newydd, I was reading my notes of the night we were there. When I heard Brian Shepherd mention Gareth I nearly fell out of my chair. No one knew about Gareth on our vigil and to get a Most Haunted medium to feel Gareth's presence was brilliant (well done Paula). Maybe Paula we should get back together after this, what do you think?

I find all this so interesting, a lot of people would say that there are no such things as ghosts but I have lived near Plas Newydd all my life and when I was a child I used to love playing in the gardens, but as soon as it got dark, we used to hear a small child screaming, like it was being threatened, even though there were no other children around. Could that have been the small boy? I don't hear it any more but my son has heard screaming there before as well. You can also see shadows in some of the upstairs windows and outside the house you do get a feeling as if you are being watched!

I remember going here every weekend with my dad. My auntie used to live in one of the bungalows down the road so we just used to walk up and spend about an hour or so going around the mazes etc.I never felt scared here, although I didn't like walking around the gardens bit by the fountain. Used to feel as if I was being watched!

I have visited Plas Newydd many many times during the day as I only live down the road from it, but on Monday 29th October myself and lots of family friends went there after dark with the kids dressed up in haloween costumes. I took various photos some of which are a bit strange and show what looks like mist or is it a ghost and I'm sure there is someone in the window on one photo. We all got the feeling that we were being watched.

Hello Chris, It sounds as if these people didn't know what they were doing and yes, if you annoy people, they will try to hurt you, as with the living. People seem to forget, that even when you're in spirit, you still have your own attitudes/feelings, yet living people seem to think it's suddenly acceptable to be disrespectful and taunt and mess around with those passed over. Nothing can harm you if your intentions are good and honest and with love - even your vicar can accept that love is the strongest will of all.If these people have 'upset' someone it's hardly surprising they will retaliate. Send them love and ask for their forgiveness and try to picture a loving light around their home. It may also help to 'cleanse' the home with salt water, moving clockwise around the house imagining a bright sun in the centre of their home. Love and blessings

Ouija boards should not be used as they are evil. Our vicar had to go for over a week to a house to pray with and for the people who lived there, they had been using a board and had all sorts of evil things happening to them!

Plas Teg is one of my most favourite places. It's so peaceful and such a warm feeling whenever I go. The grounds and the house are beautiful. My mother used to live in Llangollen and when she was a little girl she saw a ghost of a Welsh lady in full costume looking out of an upstairs window. No one was there apart from my mum due to being winter time. That's where she used to play when she was younger but that story has never put me off going to this remarkable house.

I really do think its sad that boards get a bad press. Are we still stuck in the seventies? A board is just that - a wooden board or paper put in a circle. As for lower beings coming through, this can happen in a seance, a circle, or even just attacking an individual. It's all the same really. We are opening ourselves up to the spirit world. Anything can see my light and come, I trust my spirit guide to keep me safe as well as my own judgment. I do agree with the money thing - as I've said on other sites, charging is wrong and quite sickening. Blessings to all of you.

I have never used this form of divination, and never would. With the use of boards like this, it is an easy way of contacting spirit, the problem being, that it is also an easy way for lower entities to come through, which is usually the case. Boards have not been constantly documented though time as being bad/evil or dangerous for no reason. How many times have you read about these forms of divination producing good results and solid proof of contact with spirit? I would much rather contact spirit through my guide and give the recipient proof. Usually spirit will give something that is so personal to the recipient, it can not be mistaken as being generalised. Personally I usually find that spirit may only need to give one word or sentence to get there message across. If they tell me to say frog then it's frog, I don't then give it as a toad. Never change what spirit are giving you, it's not meant to make sense to the reader, but only to the recipient. I don't believe reading should be given as a form of fortune telling, it should only be give that spirit exist. If anyone is thinking of going to a medium for a reading, don't go paying large amounts of money. I have never charged for a reading, and there are many places on line that you can ask for free readings. Just be aware there are a lot of unscrupulous people out there! God Bless, Michelle

You say that the board was used for visual proof of supernatural phenomena! How can this be classified as proof I ask? Surely it can't be classed as solid proof when no matter how much the sitters trust each other somebody could still move the pointer whether it be on purpose or sub-consciously.
Tue Oct 24 08:18:46 2006

Paula Roscoe, Mold
The simple answer is that I don't need a board to speak with others. Never have needed one. I was asked by the people coming to participate if it was safe to use one so that they could have visual proof of supernatural phenomena! If used correctly, angel/ouja boards are just like telephones IF used with respect. My guide knows I am 100% respectful to anyone who wishs to speak with me. I have asked why myself and am told it is those still walking the earth who have a hang up about these things, the spirit world see it as nothing more than a way to contact. I have yet to meet a spirit who isn't happy, in fact, I have been told it is sometimes easier to use, if their energies are low. Ouja boards have such bad press. Yet, as far as I'm concerned, does it matter how I can counsel people as long as they need it? If they can find the peace they want, I'd use an elephant stuck to my ear. I am doing this with all good intentions, my guide knows this. If I wasn't, do you really believe the spirit world would tolerate it? I know they would not. Blessings to you though for your opinion.

One question, for someone who is a medium with so many self appraised spiritual skills why resort to using a Ouija Board? a competent and well developed medium would have no need to use such an item to gather information from spirit from my own experience any true highly evolved spirit guide would advise against using such a device for contact.
