My husband and I were driving home to Treuddyn just passing the entrance to Pistyll Farm (small businesses turn-off) on the Nercwys road from Mold when a man ran out in front of our car. We had to take evasive action to miss him and also had to brake quite hard. He appeared to come out of the hedge on the right-hand side and disappear into the hedge on the left-hand side, but there was no-one there. We both looked at each other and asked what we thought we had seen. We agreed that it was a man, quite tall and well built, running across the road in a diagonal direction. He was quite clear in outline, although a muddy colour throughout. He wore a long coat (a wartime great coat, my husband thinks). It was flapping as he ran. I could see his legs, but we are not quite sure about seeing his feet... He appeared to be running off the ground.
The incident happened on December 7 2005, around 5.10pm. There was a half moon shining and it was quite cold. Although there was some density to him, we could see through him and to me, he appeared to be running away from something. He certainly seemed to have a purpose in his stride. There were no tones, just an overall muddy/greyish colour. I can't remember what colour he was when we saw him in the headlights, he was certainly picked out but also he passed us so quickly.
Paranormal researcher Richard Holland said: "This is the first time I have heard of this interesting apparition, although it must be said there seem to be more haunted roads in North Wales than anywhere else! In my book Haunted Clwyd I describe a ghost that was frequently seen in the early morning on a road between Pentre Halkyn and Holywell. Many commuters saw him in the early 1970s and one of the readers of my Wales of the Unexpected column in the Daily Post told me of a time when he was a passenger in a car which seemed to run him over, an experience very similar to that had by the Treuddyn couple.
"Also in Haunted Clwyd there is a description of a large ghostly silhouette wandering along Swan Lane at Gwernymynydd, near Mold. A very similar ghost was seen by a couple near Flint and they too got in touch through my column. One can't help wondering whether this unnerving shadowy shape isn't patrolling all the lanes of Flintshire!"
Richard said: "The best known 'road ghost' of NE Wales is that which has caused more than one motorist to brake sharply on the A541 dual carriageway which runs past the grand old house of Plas Teg between Pontblyddyn and Caergwrle. One lady was so convinced she had run someone over that she phoned the police, who used tracker dogs and a helicopter to try and find the 'victim', whom they feared may have wandered away, injured and dazed.
"Fortunately, the local officers already knew about the ghost - which usually appears as an elderly lady drifting across the road - and were able to reassure the driver that no-one corporeal had been hurt. The driver appeared on Carol Vorderman's Mysteries on BBC1 several years ago talking about this uncanny experience and I was on it as well, giving some of the background to the haunting.
"As well as the A541, I have driven along Nercwys Road many times and I am relieved I haven't had the shock of an apparition suddenly running out in front of me. It would be most interesting to know whether other readers can shed more light on the Nercwys ghost."

Can anyone confirm the Loggerheads story about the helpless miner? A group of us went up to Loggerheads a couple of weeks back & someone was apparently followed by a guy with some kind of mining tool. When I asked my grandad he told me about a miner that had fallen down a mine shaft and broke his back & eventually died. He only comes out certain months of the year when his daughter died and when he died. And there's a boy who fell over devil's gorge - sort of '70s era don't know if that means anything to anyone.

I can confirm there were American soliders at Plas Teg. My gran told me that the locals used to put on dances for them at Pontblyddyn Church Hall.

In the mid 70s I was a student at the old Wrexham Tech and a dozen of us decided to stay the night at Plas Teg during rag week, and not one of us believed in ghosts before that night. I don't remember the name of the lady owner who told us several stories of reported sightings including a headless rider on the road and a young woman who threw herself into the well! BBC Wales interviewed us before we settled down for the night but didn't come back the next morning to find out if we really saw anything. We didn't see anything that she mentioned but two of us definitely saw a man from the waist up who was clearly dressed in some kind of American style 2nd World War type uniform. It wasn't a fleeting look, he was clearly there for at least 2 or 3 minutes. The lady owner told us the next morning that there had been service men living there during or after the war, though no-one else has ever confirmed if this is true.

My husband and I frequently walk a particular lane in Gwernymynydd during the pre-dawn hours to enjoy the humming buzz that emanates throughout the lane (particularly from the top down to the lane itself). We also snap a lot of pictures...aside from many many different sizes and shapes of orbs, we have captured a great many mists ranging from dense *mobbings* to thinner foggies. On two occasions, when the hillside was particularly *humming*, we came away with a couple of VERY amazing pictures of someone we have dubbed "Mr Miner". Quite clearly not the usual mists, but very human forms! One headed down the hillside pointing further up the lane, and one quite definitely retreating back up the hillside. It's a fairly quiet and infrequently travelled lane, especially in the pre-dawn hours. We would like very much to keep it that way, so are purposely omitting the lane's name here.

My dad's workmate had an experience on the road from Mold to Wrexham [the same road where you turn off to Plas Teg, the main one]. He was going home from nights at about 5.30 a.m and there was hardly any cars around, let alone people! He said that he saw this hooded figure [not like a monk or anything, hooded jacket, trousers, shoes etc] holding a bag and was going to offer the guy a lift [seeing as it was a few miles to Mold yet]. As he approached the guy and slowed down, he realised that the guy didn't have a face in the hood, it was just black emptiness inside. This terrified my dad's mate and he sped off. Looking back in his mirror, the person had gone. Very strange...

"Also in Haunted Clwyd there is a description of a large ghostly silhouette wandering along Swan Lane at Gwernymynydd, near Mold." I have visited this site before now, and have just come to seek it out, wondering if there was anything in relation to a ghostly silhouette I saw on this same road just this week. I was coming back from Moel Fammau with a car full of my friends. We had been sitting and talking most of the night, and it was the early hours of the morning. They where all still engaged in conversation as I was driving, and so none of them saw what I did, but I remain certain in what I saw. As I rounded the brow of the long hill between Loggerheads and Gwernamynydd, I saw a large, what appeared to be cloaked figure, gliding across the road. It seemed to be a beige/olive green colour, and was formed as though a human body was inside the cloak, though as it moved I could see no features within it. It moved across the road at the top of the hill from my right to left at a jogging pace, and was gone within seconds of my first seeing it.This was definitely a strange experience, and I would be interested to hear from anyone who has seen something on the Gwernamynydd road before.

I lived for a couple of years on the cheshire/wales border. I've seen several ghosts in the roads, especially in foggy conditions. The first time i was driving home after work and was on the Pulford to Dodleston road when i had to make an emergency stop for a figure running towards me in the middle of the road. I thought i had hit someone and got out the car to see if the person was ok. No one. the car behind pulled up to see if i was ok, after seeing me swerve and brake. I've seen similar figures crossong the road and have also had people in the car with me who see them as well. They're usually a dark void in the fog where my car headlamps don't reflect anything back. I've only ever seen it in the cheshire/north wales area, seen the effect about 5 times now. The fog in those places at night seem to be thicker than anywhere else in the country. I put my experiances down to strange shadows. Scary the first time you see it, but it gets better.

The main road from Mold to Denbigh has bad bends which have caused many a fatal accident over the years, why is it then that there aren't ghosts jumping out at me left, right and centre? And, for that matter, anywhere else in the country. The roads should be crawling with apparitions, especially as ghosts are associated with tragic, horrific and traumatic deaths.

In regards to the ghostly figure seen on the road by Pistyll farm entrance, I lived a quarter of a mile from that turning for 6 years, one memorable night when returning to the house my younger sister saw a grey/brown figure standing at the top of the stairs in our 300yr old house on the grounds of Nercwys Estate. Over the years it was seen again and small children have been heard in the house as well as the sounds of a piano playing when only my mother was in the house and no one was near the piano.

I would like to hear from anyone who may have experienced ghostly goings on travelling on the Mochdre stretch between black cat roundabout and Mochdre. An ex boyfriend and myself were driving down towards the roundabout one day in the afternoon. We were not speeding and we both had our eyes on the road in front busy daydreaming. All of a sudden a really old man appeared in our path crossing the road VERY slowly. He had a walking stick and wore a fawn coloured coat. He did not flinch at all and luckily there were no cars coming in the other direction. We had to suddenly swerve to the other side of the road because we would have hit him, he was very close indeed. When we turned around to make sure he was alright there was no man to be seen at all. I am not suggesting that this is definitely a ghost, but it was so strange.
