Dancing mountain ghost

Moel Famau

Last updated: 19 June 2009

John from Flint shared his ghost sighting atop Moel Famau, near Mold, which led to stories from others about their encounters with the dancing lady.

speech marks About five years ago my girlfriend and I walked up to the hill top at Moel Famau. We were the last people there as it was getting towards about 7.30-8pm.

As we approached the steep hill just before the memorial we saw a young woman in a light blue dress dancing on it. We were surprised as it was very cold up there on top.

But what surprised us most of all was that in less than one minute as we arrived and were standing on the top, the woman had completely vanished! I looked on all sides of the hill but there was no sign.

To this day we believed that we saw a ghost. Has any one else had a similar experience up there and are there any stories behind it? speech marks

I saw an apparition up Moel Famau mountain of a soldier, dressed in war time. He walked right past me. I said 'good morning', he didn't even look at me, as if I wasn't their. Even my dog took no notice. He was so gray and very thin. As I looked back a second later he was gone. This was about February time in the morning, about 10 o'clock.

I've read all of your comments and think that they are true in every sense. I believe in ghosts and have seen a couple in my life. They are scary at first but they are there to tell a story in my eyes!

My brother and I have spent many nights on Moel Famau and on one cold dusky evening when leaving the summit, the snow was deep and the ice was thick. We noticed a very tall man in dark clothing approaching the tower. It seemed odd because it was nearly dark and we were the last people to be seen. As we passed the man he said in a very deep and calming voice, Be very careful on your way down, and walked on across the summit. As we turned to see where he was going he had vanished out of sight, not a trace of anybody anywhere. To this day we can't explain what or who we had seen. But it left us both with deep thoughts and chills that are still with us today.

My husband climbs Moel Famau weekly & often very early in darkness, although he hasn't seen anything ghostly he often reports a 'spooky' feeling. We are so lucky to live in this amazing place & there is a feeling of history in the air here, we often wonder what secrets the hills, rocks & caves could tell? We have collected some books from the Theatr Clwyd shop telling some ghost stories which were very interesting! The stories about River Alyn & bottles containing ghostly spirits were quite creepy - if anyone finds one don't open it!

My mother, born in Ruthin, in her teens was a Nanny at Llanbedr Hall. This was many years before I was born, the youngest of seven children. When I was about 11 years old she took me for a day out on Moel Famau. I still recollect the day was fine with those magnificent views of Gods own country stretching beyond the lovely Vale of Clwyd. No ghosts were seen (or heard) but halfway up the pathway we stumbled upon a pile of old threepenny bits. To my mum and I this must have been a small fortune and it has held the day in my memory for all these years (I am now 75) Wonderful days in a truly wonderful place.

I remember in 1968 walking up Moel Famau about midnight when it was covered in snow. We were a group of lads and dads and the only thing which scared me was the dads' insistence on belting out the song Men of Harlech. Those same lads will be up there this Saturday and if you hear us singing Men of Harlech...please don't be scared.

I went up the hill on Thurs May 8 with 2 friends - we didn't see anything but I did feel a little strange when we got back and put the pictures on my laptop we seemed to have got lots of pictures of orbs.

I have been up Moel Famau many times, it's a great walk. I have never noticed any ghostly feelings or have I ever seen anything strange. However I would like to tell you about a very strange occurrence that happened to my niece and her boyfriend last year. It happened on the road that runs from Frodsham towards Delamere. It was dusk and as they where driving towards Delamere they saw just the bottom part of a body, ie just the legs, running from the road and disappeared into the hedge on their right. Quite chilling, has anyone seen anything like this?

This is a great story. I know these things exist and happen. I have experienced these things since childhood (though never looked for them). I was staying one night in an Inn in Northern New York with a friend and her young son - in the middle of the night we were awakened by her son that had gotten out of bed and was talking to somebody in the dark. I told the boy to go back to bed, but this 5-year old boy said that he was talking to a 'ghost man' and that the ghost man had come to give me (personally) a message - the boy told me that the message was that the 'spirit man was nice and that he came and went from the place and that I didn't need to be afraid of him - as he came and went'. It was completely out of character for this child to make up such stories. As it would turn out, a year later I by chance lived in this place and it was indeed certainly haunted. It turned out that a man named Ray had shot himself in the room a decade earlier. Folks knew Ray as a very kind but sad man - beset with heavy troubles. My point is - based on my experience - at least some spirits come and go - and as such - won't be experienced 100% of the time as is the case of the girl in blue atop Moel Famau. This is my opinion.

I live very near Moel Fammau and I and many other locals have had many experiences of 'strange' happenings in the area. The land of the past is never far from the surface in this area. It's beautiful and full of history and I don't doubt for a minute that all sorts of 'things' happen in the cross-over between the then and now!

I live at the foot of Moel Famau, and the only frightening thing I have seen is motorists driving at breakneck speeds along the lane. Now I know they are running from the ghost.

Never seen anything there, but definitely get the feeling of something has happened in the past. I believe the mountains hold a lot of secrets & ghosts.
