Caught on camera - ghost or mist?

Last updated: 11 February 2009

Matt Armstrong was taking photos around the village of Llay, near Wrexham, when he caught this image on camera. Read his story and other people's views about this picture.

Matt's strange photo

My friend Shaun Bird and myself decided to walk down to the bottom of the hill at Pentwmpath and take some photos of Nant-Y-Gaer wood. I took several photographs and we walked back up the hill.

The hill was very icy and Shaun had training shoes on and was able to walk a little faster than myself. Shaun was nearly at the top of the hill and I was only three quarters of the way up. I decided to stop and take a photo of the bridge at the bottom of the hill.

I took the photo using a digital camera. With the digital camera that I use it displays the photo for a brief second before you can take the next. When the camera displayed the photo it looked as though the picture had not taken correctly. I took another straight away. There was about a five second gap between each photo.

When I downloaded the photos from the camera to my PC, I had a look at the photo that I thought had not taken correctly. There was a white mist covering over half of the photo. I could not explain where or how this mist had appeared from. At this moment I walked away from my desk to get a pen. As I walked back to the PC I was looking at the photo. I could not believe what I was seeing.

Within the mist were two faces, one staring into the camera and one looking down at the floor. The one looking into the camera appears to be wearing a hat or a helmet. The other appears to have something on his head, but it is not too clear. Others have looked at the photo and can also see the two faces.

I can assure all of you that the photo has not been tampered with in any way and that there was no mist around at the time I took the photos.

Are these two faces images of ghosts that are living in limbo on Penny Hill? If so, why did they disappear so quickly? Why did they appear in the first place? Why did they only appear on the camera and not in view of all of us? Or is it just a fault with the camera that has taken thousands of pictures previously with no problem. You can decide for yourself.

I believe there is a long history of ghosts here. In the early 1890s my great grandparents lived at Llay House. One evening my great grandfather and grandfather saw a ghost pointing at the ground on their estate. It vanished as they walked towards it. Shortly thereafter they moved to live in Liverpool. The new owners found coal - Llay Colliery - exactly where the ghost had been pointing.

My boyfriend got left some land by his great uncle who died when he was young, his uncle lived up the road and is buried in the graveyard next to the land, my bf has turned it back into an allotment as it was overgrown for ages. Thursday we went up there and did a lot of work all day, that night I took some photos of it, the sun was then setting, in the photos were orbs and I also got a photo just like yours. I couldn't work out where the mist was coming from, there wasn't any! We have been able to make a face too! It's scary but so fascinating!

It's just mist, or condensation on the lens? I can't see the dog but I do see an elephant's face and trunk.

This is nonsense. People's imagination will conjur up a ghost at the slightest whim. They will see what they want to see.

It's known as Brocken spectre effect. It occurs on very cold mornings or late in the afternoon as the weather cools rapidly. Google it & you'll see.

Can anyone else only see a gigantic dog and a man in its nose?

I cannot see two faces, I can only see a dog staring into the camera and a face on the left!

I don't know why but as soon as I saw this picture I got connected to it. Yes, I do believe in ghosts and I've a God gift of sensing them. They actually look like a mist floating by but some do have a shape.

Big John, Llay
It looks like a picture of a bearded collie.

I'm a photographer, and I know what this is, basically you've taken a picture while you've been breathing, and the camera's sensor has picked up the "misty" type of stuff that comes out of your mouth when you breathe in cold weather. Basically you can see your breath, I can tell this because of the closeness to the lens itself and like I've said, I've taken loads of photos with these outcomes.

Oh please! Tell me you've never heard of condensation on a lens when it's cold!

It's fake. Look at the right hand side of the "mist" and the left...it looks like fog, the middle of the fog has been messed around with in Photoshop or something to change its shape/texture. Look at the bridge at the bottom, it's warped slightly through the fog. The mist has been morphed.

It looks to me like a child in the right hand corner cuddling a spaniel dog.

I lived in Llay as a child and have many not so fond memories of ghostly encounters there. For example, something chasing a friend and myself across the top path of the Dingle. As we ran so did it - we could hear its heavy feet and loud heavy breathing but could not see it. That was just one of many encounters. Personally, I think Llay and Gresford area are alive with paranormal activity. Having experienced the paranormal myself at the area in question I believe the photo is genuine.

I believe in ghosts and all things supernatural, but I really can't see people in this picture, I can see the dog, though. Also, Charlotte from Derbyshire, you don't know what you're talking about, ghosts only appearing at night is just the 'Hollywood effect' they can appear any time and in many different ways.

Really it is just mist! Why not say ghost are in the sky just because clouds plays tricks?

Two possibilities come to mind. You say the day was icy - this could be your breath condensing on the lens. Or it could be a Brocken Spectre. Could be linked to a temperature inversion on the hill - we get them on the steep hill where I live. Interesting, anyway.

To Nina, Inverclyde, no need to tilt the laptop it looks like two faces, 1 mid right and 1 top left, look close though!
Tue Aug 5 12:31:33 2008

Hannah, Wales
Now that is freaky, I think in the upper left hand corner it looks a bit like that ape from Donkey Kong... weird.

Gee from Tudhoe
We can see a dog's face! After reading all the comment we looked closely and it looks just like one! We don't know how anybody can say you can't make anything out of it because when you look hard enough you can definitely see it. If you want to beleive it you can see it. You have to open your mind.
Fri Jul 4 10:05:12 2008

Nina, Inverclyde
If you have a laptop tilt it backwards and you will see a face at the top right corner and a figure standing clearly.
Wed Jun 25 08:43:31 2008

Holly from Liverpool
I can see the man near the bottom on the right. I think I can see the other one but it's a bit vague. The man I can see tho is very prominent. It's scary how he is staring straight at the camera. He looks to me like a general or leader in the army or something?

I believe this is a ghost because I too have seen one in daylight when I was with a friend. W e were out at the park outside my house and saw two people at a house with a baby in one of their arms

Jen W. from USA
I too can also see the faces. Also, if you look very, very carefully in the upper right hand corner, you can see a large face smiling at you. Creepy!

Louise from Prestatyn
This looks like a dog. Who says all ghosts have to be human.
Mon Apr 14 08:31:05 2008

Charlotte, Derbyshire
To be honest, I think it's just some mist that came on quickly. Ghosts only show themselves in the dark. And even if they did during day, it wouldn't look anything like that, trust me, that aint a ghost. And make sure that you clean the lense whilst taking a picture.
Mon Apr 14 08:16:48 2008

Vicky M, Wrexham
I really don't know what to make of this picture because the ground is damp so it could just be mist, but also the picture does look very similar to a dog so to be honest I really couldn't tell you what I think of it but does seem quite spooky!
Fri Apr 4 11:33:39 2008

Justin Rexin from Bath
Oh yes, it looks like a dog, I believe in ghosts, I have seen one, it was my granddad telling me to tell my grandma that he was OK. He died just 2 weeks earlier.

I walk my dog in the forest. I took pictures when it was foggy and it appeared all over not how it appears in this photo. I think it looks like a dog's face like a white poodle's features. There are such things as ghosts but you only believe when you see one. I think yes this is a sighting.
Wed Mar 5 09:07:47 2008

BH
I would be surprised if it is not condensation either in the lens or on the sensor.
Tue Feb 26 09:23:35 2008

Am I the only person who can't make a thing out of this? Just looks like your breath. I can't see any forms in it at all.

If you look at the picture really good you will see it has a dog's face in it. I do a lot of investigating in this field and a lot of research in haunted places.

Tony, Allan, Alexandria
The ground and leaves look damp so I would say it was mist. You see it like that all the time in parks and woods.

It's misty down that hill in the summer, there's a stream at the bottom! No way it's a ghost!
Wed Jan 16 08:05:02 2008

Lisa Dean, Highland Home, AL
I don't believe this picture is real. I think it's just fog. Someone is trying to play it off as a ghost because it has some characteristics of a ghost.
