Down in the cellar we used a room to practise with our band. I would often go down there after I locked up the pub at night and practise there with the lads until sometimes the next morning.
Well it all started from here, I'd go up to the pub's kitchen from the cellar to make us all a brew and while I was doing this I heard knocking noises coming from the front door area, so I went and had a look but no one was there.
This happened several times (these sounds were what you would hear if someone was knocking at the front door of your house) but I never really thought much of it.
Well weeks went by and we started practising in the back room of the pub as it was warmer and too cold in the cellar as it was winter.
After I'd locked up the pub one night, we thought we would run through some songs and after a while we heard some scuffling noices and what sounded like footsteps up stairs. They would start above us and walk towards the other end of the pub. Well, this spooked us all out and my girlfriend Dawn said 'Oh it's nothing don't worry about it'. But she knew we weren't hearing things. We decided to go up and have a look.
When upstairs I opened the door leading to the old guest quarters which wasn't being used but there wasn't anybody there. This went on for months - strange noises etc and we noticed it only happened when we would practise with the band.
One night we started practising round about 2am and after a short while Gary, my cousin, said he was feeling sick and said he was going up to bed. We carried on for a while without Gary and then we all went to bed, I set the alarms and followed up.
I was in my bedroom with my girlfriend, this room was also the main lounge, when suddenly the alarm went off. Dawn looked out of the window to see if anyone was at the front door or in the car park, but there wasn't anybody there. I jumped up and ran down the stairs, as I turned to go down the last part of the stairs I opened a big curtain that covered the bottom of the stairs and to my shock, there, standing only 10 foot in front of me, was a tall man dressed in what I would call a trench coat and big hat and boots.
Well what a shock, I ran back up the stairs and went and woke Gary up. The alarm was still sounding. I said there was a man in the pub and he was coming out of the office area and walking towards the front door. He jumped up and we both grabbed a couple of old kids' crickets bats that the landlord had left and went down. It was scary as we opened the curtain, no one there. I went in to the office, still no one there. Gary and I both went to the front door of the pub but it was still locked as I had left it. Well we both thought he might be still in the pub and were wondering where he might be. I turned the alarm off and we had a good look all over the pub, but couldn't find him, no doors had been opened or windows, we even went down to the cellar but still found no one. I went back to the office and checked everything was OK and went down to the cellar again and checked the safe.
Off we went back upstairs and I made a brew, we spoke about this and came to the conclusion that all the times that the alarm had gone off during the night in the past and for no apparent reason that maybe this had something to do with it.
The next day I told the landlord and his wife and they both said that when they lived there this happened a few times, the alarms going off and banging noises, but nothing was wrong and they would go back to bed. But maybe they did see and hear something? Why did they go and live elsewhere just a few miles away? Perhaps they didn't want to tell us, because we were looking after the pub, and not them especially after the pub had closed for the night.
I never did see anything again but did hear the noises. I have often thought about this and always thought was it a ghost or what? I never have really spoken about it much, told the kids about the incident and said I'd seen a ghost, who knows? If anyone has any info about the pub or its past life and Garden City I would love to hear.

Hi I am the landlady of the Queensferry Hotel at present and live here with my family. We have had a few strange encounters living here i.e. barrels moving in the cellar, alarms going off, we have seen things from the corner of our eyes but nothing to say that it is a ghost. I have had someone say they have seen one of the ghosts that live here with us and he appears to be wearing a trench coat with what looks like a fisherman's hat, and is said to move from the cellar to the function room. I also hear something walking up and down the corridor upstairs. There was a time last year when something would wake my daughter up in the middle of the night. She would wake up screaming and pointing towards the corridor, what it was we don't know.I am determined to find out what or who is here. Anyone who knows any more about the Queensferry Hotel, I would love to hear more.

I trained at the Ferry Hotel with Fred Mac before taking over the Central in Shotton. I know the layout well and looked after it for Fred a few times. It is very near to the river and dampness has a lot to do with the alarms going off, also there is a door in the cellar leading to a yard and on to the bowling green, with a lot of wildlife at night. If you want haunted try the Central, the one time stagecoach watering hole.

Your sister in law may have been landlady at sometime in the 80s, but not the time I was there and I was there for 18 months to 2 years. I've never been a believer in spirits, but until something happens then your mind of thoughts change, so to you, Sue and family you may have never experienced anything so don't think that anyone else didn't. We experienced many odd things at the Fun Pub as it was known then, and they were strange but not too interesting to write about. Maybe my answer could be in the building of the pub, like most things I check things out and I have on this issue, which has partly answered my strange encounter. It's great what you can research nowadays, so if anyone is interested then check out the construction site of the pub and surrounding area - you will be surprised.

Yesterday (Halloween 2007) something strange happened in my next door neighbours' (David and Pauline) garden. There is a big sensor light underneath an arch there. When I was sitting outside with my grandad approx half past nine we saw the sensor light go on when no-one was there. It then went off for another two minutes then it went on again. We then knew it was definitely a ghost. It happened another four times and after that it started flicking on and on three times. After a lady came the sensor light didn't come on again (except for her going under the arch!).

My sister in law and her husband were landlord and landlady of the Ferry Hotel in Garden City, me and my husband were always there and I can tell you I've never seen any ghosts nor did anybody in our family. This was in the 1980s when we were there.

Hi you can look up in the local library about specific buildings through their archives upstairs and the local council will have information reguarding historical buildings. The boat mueseum will also hold information. You could always find out by asking at the library about local historians and I found the best people to ask are the old people who have lived there all their lives. And the local paranormal investigators are a good start. The half way house pub up near Hooton is very haunted. Good luck.
