Ghosts: What are they?

Lionel Fanthorpe

Last updated: 22 May 2008

Share your thought and listen / read as local ghost hunter and author Richard Holland shares a spooky story while fellow investigator, well known Lionel Fanthorpe offers a theory as to what it could mean...

Listen to Richard & Lionel

Richard tells the story of how a family awoke to a smoke-filled house...

In their shock they also heard the "tinkling of glass". But on further inspection they found that the incident wasn't really happening but they were seeing and hearing a snapshot of an incident that had happened long before - a ghost image.

The family investigated further and found that the house had been the scene of a death a century earlier when a man had fallen whilst carrying a lamp, smashing it and triggering a fire in which he died.

Investigator Lionel, a clergyman, TV presenter and author, says he believes it is possible that nature has its own recording techniques and that emotion and fear especially can be a form of energy.

He says that just as light, heat and energy can change, so the pain and fear and the way the man died in the house could have, somehow, had an effect on the scene of the house.

And he went on to say that a sensitive person could pick up on this energy and play it back just as a CD player does today.

I know where there's defo ghosts in case any ghost hunters want footage. I live in Penmaenmawr and down the road theres a big old monestry, apparently the head priest/ monk died in there years ago. Me and 2 of my friends have been in there and witnessed a few weird things, the first was me and Chris were on the top floor, noone else there, but we heard footsteps on the wood floor right behind us getting closer but there was no1 there. We turned on the TV left by a squatter but it was just static, so we switched it off but it didn't go off, so we unplugged it but it still didn't go off for a good minute until my mate kicked it because he was freaked out.

Also, the lights and doors were always different to how we left them, even if we only went up or down a flight of stairs. That place does have a very eerie feel to it.

I know that spirits do definitely exist as they have appeared in my presence and it is peculiar that they mostly originate in Scotland. Most have been benign but I have found that over exposure to them can give one a blinding headache and temporary loss of balance, not to mention memory.

Although I keep an open mind on these things I am Catholic and therefore we are not encouraged to believe such things. However, I do believe it is possible for memories impressed in stone buildings for example can replay. This has happened in York where many people have seen Roman soldiers marching along a street, their legs below the knee hidden because the road was much lower when they were alive. I should think traumatic circumstances can also leave a mark on a building etc.

I'll start believing when you show me the evidence. Not just stories and hearsay and things that can be attributed to a much more likely rational explanation. If anybody thinks they can actually prove the existence of supernatural anythings, then there's 1 million dollars waiting for you over at James Randi's Educational Foundation. Funny how it's never been claimed despite all these so called ghost sightings and psychics.

I have had a few encounters with what may have been spiritual "entities" (for want of a better word). Try hard to be open-minded but not gullible. Most striking experience was via my husband & a past life experience which scared him to death (he's a sceptic & still can't come to terms with this). Lionel, please use my email address if you'd like to get in touch; I'd like to talk to responsible & reliable person about these matters.

I have had a few experiences, apparently with such matters, which Lionel might be interested in. I consider myself to have an open mind; I try not to be prejudiced one way or the other. Please ask him to contact me if he wishes to know more.

Well, Jaffa's Law or not energy seems to be dynamic. Therefore, it can interact with objects. Just as the Sun can heat a stone or a bale of hay increase internal heat. Objects do not have to be reactive to become energized. Certain minerals when combined in chemistry shows this. There is more in life and beyond to discover.
