Haunted by slaves the past

Buckley clock

Last updated: 22 December 2008

William, formerly of Buckley, shares an unnerving encounter which became too much to bear...

speech marks Before moving out to France, my wife and I lived in Buckley and locals often saw repeated sightings of the deceased making their way back towards the old abandoned brickworks which the town was famous for before its decline in the early 70s.

Our house was connected via the cellar to the coal cellar of an old public house in Buckley, the Potters Inn. The story goes that in the early part of the 19th century the innkeeper had used the house as a holding cell for slaves en route to the colonies and transferred the poor souls down the passage way and on to dray wagons back to the local ports of Liverpool.

Prior to moving into the house I could say that I had never had any 'close encounters' with anything supernatural at all but when my wife and I opened up the cellar the sense of dread and fear seemed to spread through the whole house.

On finding the bricked-up passageway and the shameful history associated with the house - this became very unnerving when the sound of movement along the passage way could be heard. Afer a few weeks it all became too much and we left... speech marks

Naomi, a lot of people emigrated to Buckley from Stoke in the 19th century hence the relation with the Potteries. Also, it's true slaves were put on shore and held in cellars for a period of time. I heard one escaped in the early 1800s and was caught in Broughton where the poor soul was hanged. The tree is known as hangman's tree and is only 200 yds from my house.

Hi William. Well, I don't know if your story is true or not but here's mine and it's up to you or anyone else what you make of it...I personally am stunned! The other night while in that in-between state of not being awake but not quite asleep the following thought came into my head: I live in Buckley. Now the thought didn't come from me as such...I have never heard of Buckley...so thought to myself why on earth would I think that? This kind of thing happens to me often but I ignore it hoping I'm not going Schizophrenic or something. Anyway I read a lot so thought I may have read it somewhere. I finally remembered today to check where Buckley is, hoping to get a clue as to why it should come into my mind that way. First, I was surprised that it's in Wales...was expecting it to be in England. Second, after following the link to Buckley then here, I start to read what you have to say and a pub called the 'Potters Inn' is mentioned! Now whether the pub existed or not I have no idea...all I know is I followed what sounded like someone whispering in my ear to this page and coincidence or not I am extremely stunned! (I live in the Potteries.) So now whenever I 'Hear' or think I hear something I will follow it up from now on to see where it takes me and to find out if such things are really just coincidence. Hope you and your family are enjoying a good life in France.

Mike, N. Wales.
There was no pub called "The Potters Inn", in Buckley, North Wales. The present Potters Wheel was built on waste land or mining land - like most of Buckley, where there is a lot of landfill. Perhaps one day Buckley will disappear in the ground! No loss!

It was a very good story but can you say some more things that happened to you, I would love to know.

William, we know what it was like! You have our sympathies! We lived in a VERY haunted house in Cheshire until 2005. It was very unnerving and we moved to Wales because it was making us quite poorly.

Dear William, loved the story but would love to know a little bit more. Can you give a street name or location as I cannot find any information on the Potters Inn or its existence. We have a Potters Wheel pub but this was built early 80s. Thanks.
