During a short stay in North Wales in May 2001 in which my fiancee, Carol, and I were staying at Bodelwyddan Castle, we were travelling towards Conwy on the A55 Expressway when we first set eyes on Gwrych Castle - we instantly fell in love with Gwrych and vowed to find out more.
The day we returned to Norfolk we planned to get a closer look at what appeared from a distance to be a beautiful sight. What we encountered when we got closer saddened us both.
We could not believe this piece of history could have been allowed to get so dilapidated and why no one seemed to care about halting the increasing decay. On further investigation we found a website and a committee who cared very much for Gwrych. We now visit as often as possible, trying to imagine some of its past glories.
During a subsequent visit in August, we visited a shop in Abergele where the shop assistant told us tales of ghosts as well as interesting facts of Gwrych in better days. That same day we visited the castle and took many photos which we intended to use for our own personal scrap book of Gwrych. What we found on developing these films we could not believe. Amongst many pictures of a decaying Gwrych we found one which was totally unexplainable.
The location of this picture was above and behind the castle following the steps up near the Hesketh tower - a round shaped structure on which was built a small brick buuilding, possibly a pump house of some kind.
On climbing up towards the top I stopped for an unknown reason and looked back. At this point Carol took a picture which she cannot remember doing. The result amazed us both. A few feet in front of Carol was a mysterious white swirling form which we could only surmise as being a ghost or spirit of some kind - it appeared to have a head.
Of what or whom this may have been we do not known. I feel the photograph speaks for itself. We just wish we knew more of the white spectre.
