Face in the window

face in the window, by Carol Hughes

Last updated: 10 February 2009

Has Carol captured on camera a ghostly face in the window at Vallé Crucis Abbey?

Carol and friends were visiting the historic ruins of Llangollen's Vallé Crucis Abbey. But it wasn't until she studied the photos back home in Liverpool that she realised what she'd captured on camera.

speech marks We captured a 'man' in the window although there was nobody else there when we visited. It's a very clear picture and has not been tampered with in any way.

We took two shots of the same - part one in colour and one in black and white. The black and white photo clearly shows a man in the window. speech marks

What do you reckon? Is it a ghost?

Hi there, My paranormal group, theorbwhisperers.com, went to Valle Crucis just after the new year. It was a bitterly cold night, -5 degrees. I had boldly wandered off, believing that I knew where I was going - because I had been for a reccie the day before - and fell down the steps next to the site shop. Nearly broke my bloomin' neck. Swore a lot, laughed even more, managed to compose myself and carry on with the investigation. Needless to say that other team members had a good chuckle at my expense. I went off to do some EVP work by myself - embarassed by my stumble - and set my digital recorder on record and asked if there was anyone there with me. When I analysed the recording later I got a male voice saying "Careful!" Do you think it was in response to my fall? I do!

This is not a face it's just that everyone has a different imagination like when you look up at the clouds and say 'that one looks like a dog', it's the same with photos - so just take time to think about it before you jump to conclusions.

I believe that this is clearly just a stretch of the imagination. I do not believe in ghosts, because I have never had an encounter with one. If the face is too small to see without blowing it up, why did you blow the picture up in the first place? I think that photos can be terribly misleading, so believe what you will, but until someone has an encounter with this particular being it will forever remain a mystery!

This face is not ghostly, it is very new and it's not faded.

The person at the window is probably just a staff member or a visitor and that women on the right is probably either a shadow from the person taking the photo or the man's wife.

Hi there...I doubt a monk would wear a shirt/tie with jumper over it. Also what about the woman to the right of the man's face (in the stone)? Someone previously mentioned her. I'm interested to know more.

Ironically, it looks like Adolf Hitler's face. But, what on earth would his spirit be doing in a religious Abbey?

The photo does look like a face, but it's a modern face which looks like it's a guy with a moustache, nice combed hair and is wearing a white shirt. It's not a ghostly face, but that's not to say that it's not a ghost. Interesting.

In response to Sean Davis, the picture is actually being investigated by Para-projects and I am waiting for the results of their investigation. I still have the original pictures and it's not on the colour one. When we took the 2 pictures it was only on the black and white pic and there wasn't another person to be seen anywhere.
Jay from Widnes: Is there anyway I can contact you about what you saw when you were there? Did anyone you were with capture the "face". I'd be grateful if you could let me have some more info about it. Thanks

Saw the ghost in 1991. Mum and dad had a caravan on the site. I am now in my 30s and still see it as it was then. No doubt in my mind it is the same face I saw then

There are 2 faces in this picture. There's a woman as well to the right of guy. Don't say ya missed that sleuths. Oh yes, a double exposure...

By the way 'Isobel', ghosts are real because I've seen them. I saw the same ghost in 2005, twice in 2006 and in 2007. If you see a ghost you would never want to see one again. This is actually scary for the owners of the house to see a stranger that is a ghost looking through their windows

I camped at Vallé as a child and experienced monks chanting in the early hours of the morning, the experience has stayed with me all my life.

I don't think it is a ghost because I don't believe in them. It might be a rock inside the castle that's shaped like a face.

Me and my boyfriend stopped here whilst exploring N. Wales...we had a very eerie feel from the abbey and once we got home and I uploaded the photos the one I took of the abbey was covered by a black cloud and it wasn't even bad weather!

Me and my family went to the abby when my mum took a picture at my Grandma and said 'is anyone there?' a loud noise came from the corner of the room. The picture of a man in the window was taken. Later, when we looked back at the picture on the mobile there was a head and two hands upside down.

Well personally the whole GHOST thing scares me to death. I hate the fact something is there and you can't see them especially in the dark.

When I was six I was enjoying my summer holiday at the campsite next to the Valle Crucis abbey. At midnight me and my dad snuck into the abbey with only a torch and a camera. What we discovered was truly terrifying. I was sitting on a window ledge as my dad took a picture of me. As the flash went off and in the archway in front of me a figure walked past, it appeared to be a headless figure! The next morning I went to the sweet shop. I was talking about my experience to my dad, the lady at the sweet shop overheard my conversation and said there have been many people who have seen the same thing!

Hi Roger, thanks for your reply. Can you tell me why we took 2 pics within seconds of each other one in black and white the other in colour, the time difference between the 2 pics was a mere flick of the switch. The camera is digital and the pic has been examined and confirmed unaltered in any way. It's a Fuji finepix s6000 6mp image. Look forward to your reply. Carol.

Good photo, but I think it is a double Ex. I am sure it is accidental, but the rest of the shape is visible in the brickwork. My experience is 30 years plus with all type of cameras. I live near Llangollen and have several pictures of Vallé Crucis Abbey. No ghosts on mine.

In reply to Carole from Warrington, we took the pic of the whole Abbey not just the window. The face is too small to see without blowing it up. The website just put the face part of the pic in to show you what we saw. Also in reply to Keryl from Holt. Next time I go I will ask to see your pics. Mine are also at the Abbey if you want to see the 2 pics I took. I'd love to speak to you about it.

It sure does look like one but what I can't understand what you were taking a picture of any way. (a window)? Confused...

Looking at this pic it is real. I have taken some pics of a castle ruin and on all of my pics there are faces of people dressed in clothing from the 1800s. It just totally shocked me when I downloaded them to my computer to see children and adults on the photos!

Have just handed over a pic taken in the Sacristy with the same face on it! Taken during a visit last week, April 21, 2007. He seems to be wearing a dark cowl, "lay monk". Gave the picture to the man in reception at Valle Crucis abbey. If you wish to contact me, he has my details. Email not working at the moment.

I was playing hide and seek with some friends and saw a figure there and thought it was my mate but they said nobody were near the window!

I've seen both photos one in black and white and the other in colour. The face is clearly not in the coloured one. Very strange!

I have seen the original pictures that Carol took, one in colour and one seconds later in black and white. It's strange because on the colour photo, there is no face in the window, but the black and white one - the one the face is on - is so clear. Spooky and really interesting.
Mon Apr 16 09:50:24 2007

Carole Eden, Liverpool
I am Carol's mum, and had to add that from a very young age "ghosts" seemed to visit Carol, she seems very open to them and this pic in the window does not surprise me at all. I can recall many weird events that have happened with her that have no logical explanation at all. It is without doubt a face in the window, and I have seen the original pic and her shock when she looked through the pics and saw it for herself. So in answer to the question... yes, without doubt I think it is a ghost.

Asked by Carol (a friend) to check this page out, wasn't given a reason but did so and found a face like pic right hand window bottom. Weird?
