Born and raised in Wrexham, Mark is one of Wales' most successful footballers.
He cites his family and P.E. teachers as the early motivating factors to succeed at football. Playing for his county in the Under 12s tournament, his impact was so great that he was spotted early by talent scouts from Manchester, and was signed up at 14 to join the Manchester United youth side. In a career dominated by the 'Red Devils' he has also played internationally for Wales over seventy times, (scoring 16 goals to date), more recently becoming coach during Wales' tumultuous attempts at World Cup 2002 qualification. Formerly at Blackburn as a player, Mark's league career has taken him from England to the continent and back again - a two year spell away from Manchester saw him play for Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Alex Ferguson shocked the United fans when he sold Mark to Chelsea in 1995, ending a tenure at Old Trafford that spanned over seven years. Ironically, the move pleased Mark, as Chelsea were the team he had supported - from a distance - as a young aspiring footballer. He swapped Stamford Bridge for a spell at Southampton before moving to Blackburn. Mark Hughes then became manager of the Welsh national team before moving back to Blackburn as manager but in a quick move in June, he became the boss at Manchester City.
- Moment of Glory:
- Mark's first 'golden year' came in 1984, when he scored the winning goal in Wales' 1-0 victory over England in the last of the Home Internationals.
