Like fellow Welsh footballer Gary Speed, Kevin was born in the village of Mancot, near Hawarden. He was taken on as an apprentice at Everton in 1977.
At the age of just 23 he became captain of the side, at a time when the team was entering a period of great success which began with them winning the FA Cup in 1984.
He became friends with Liverpool legend Ian Rush who lived nearby and regularly gave him lifts to the ground in his car before training, so long as he didn't have to drive inside the ground of the Derby rival! [You can hear more about this by listening to the audio interview above].
Kevin was capped 59 times by Wales and captained the side on many occasions.
In 1991 Kevin left Everton and went to play for Dundee, followed by Cardiff City, Nottingham Forest, Derby County and Chester City.
It was here that Kevin's management career started in 1994 when he joined Chester City as assistant manager before becoming manager in 1995. He left in 1999 and became manager of Shrewsbury Town, leaving them in 2003. Kevin now writes a column for BBC Wales.
