- Biography:
-
It was schoolboy football where Rush's skills as a marksman were first spotted. He played for Hawarden Rangers, in the shadow of Shotton Steelworks where his father worked, and went on to represent Deeside Schoolboys.
Rush was to set a goalscoring record for the Schoolboys prior to a certain Michael Owen following in his wake and surpassing Rushie's prowess for finishing a few years later. Ian began his career with Chester City FC and soon came to the attention of the scouts for Manchester City and Liverpool. But it was The Kop where Rush's heart lay and he joined Kenny Daglish in May 1980 for £300,000 where the pair went on to form a deadly partnership. Two years later Rush became the top goalscorer of the 1982 campaign.
In July 1986 Rush set another record, this time for British transfer fees, signing for Juventus for £3.2m before returning to Anfield. He also set a record in a Wales shirt, scoring 28 goals in 73 games. In the Football League's Top 100 legendary players, Rush netted 346 goals from 658 league games in his two spells with Liverpool. He moved to Leeds United in 1996 and then on to Newcastle United before a brief on-loan spell with Sheffield United. He became a free agent in late 1997 and moved to Wrexham FC, where he failed to find the net, and then onto Sydney Olympic, Australia.
