Representing Trinidad & Tobago, he also became a national hero when he scored the Soca Warriors' winning goal to earn the islands a place in the 2006 World Cup.
Nicknamed Tallest by T&T team-mates because he's 6ft 7in tall in his socks, Lawrence's is an unusual story for a professional footballer.
He worked in a supermarket, became a soldier and didn't turn professional until he was 26. He grew up playing five-a-side in Port of Spain.
According to the Sunday People and journalist Frank Wiechula, Lawrence joined the army and a call-up to the Defence Force side led to him swapping his career.
He ended up playing in Britain because Clayton Ince, the Trinidad goalkeeper who was playing for Crewe, recommended him to a British agent. Lawrence was signed by Swansea City at the beginning of the 2006/2007 season.
