He could come to Wrexham to find out more about his family's Welsh ties before they emigrated in 1925 for a forthcoming BBC Wales TV programme, Coming Home.
The local evening newspaper, the Evening Leader, first revealed the actor's ties with the area when a Wrexham woman researching her family history found a link between their families.
In 2001, Hilary Betts found that well known New Zealand cricketers, Jeff and Martin Crowe, were distant relatives. And then she saw a chat show in which Crowe revealed they were his cousins.
The Evening Leader says family history research shows that the Crowe's Wrexham connection dates back to Russell's great grandparents, Fred and Kezia, who emigrated to Canada in June 1925 along with 12 of their 13 children.
The 'paper trawled through its archives to find an article and photograph reporting on the family's emigration, and, in particular, the send off they were given by fellow members of Chester Street Baptist Chapel, Wrexham, which still stands today near the zebra crossing linking Waterworld Car Park with Wrexham Library Car Park.
It also mentions the family ran the well known local grocers, Crofruit. Russell's grandfather, John, stayed in Wrexham to run the business. He was a member of the Grove Park School water polo team in the 1920s.
John's older brother Frank returned from Canada two years after emigrating to help run the business but soon after John emigrated to New Zealand where he married and had two children, David and Alex, Russell's father.
Frank stayed on and had his own family, and his descendants, like Hilary who found the family connection, and other grandchildren who still live in Wrexham today.
Meanwhile, Russell was born in New Zealand and moved with his family to Australia when he was a child.
It is now hoped that the actor will fly to Wales to learn more about his family's past for the programme, Coming Home, the same series which found Wrexham connections for Cilla Black and Welsh links for Donny Osmond.
