Paul Burrell

Paul Burrell Former butler to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, who went on to become a TV celebrity.

Born:
1958
Place of Birth:
Grassmere, Derbyshire
School:
Grassmere
Biography:
Former royal butler Paul Burrell, a die-hard Wrexham FC fan with close ties to the town.

Paul is well known in Holt, Wrexham - not for all the notoriety due to his life with the Royal Family - but because he owns a flower shop in the village with his wife, Maria, who was born and raised in the area. The couple live in the nearby village of Farndon, on the Wrexham-Chester border, with their sons Alexander and Nicholas.

The earlier life of Paul was far removed from the Royal household as he grew up in the former mining village of Grassmere, Derbyshire. He settled on a royal career at an early age, after a family trip to see the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. He told his parents: "I want to work here one day." It might not have happened but for his mother, who hid a job offer on a cruise ship, leaving him with the one from the palace.

Paul entered the royal household in 1976 as a trainee footman and within a year was appointed personal footman to the Queen. In 1984 he married Maria, then a maid to Prince Philip. The couple both joined the staff of the Wales' in 1986 and were given jobs at Highgrove in Gloucestershire - he as butler, she as a maid and dresser.

Paul stayed with Diana throughout her marriage break-up. Indeed, she wrote two words when asked what she wanted to salvage from her broken marriage: "Paul Burrell". In the years that followed, it is said that Diana increasingly came to rely on her butler. After her death he said if he could have one wish, "it would be to put the clock back and for everything to be like it was before she died".

He continued to serve Diana's memory and was asked to spearhead the Diana Memorial Fund, the charitable foundation set up as a legacy. And in September 1997 he was awarded the Royal Victorian Medal by the Queen in recognition of his service to the Royal Family and the Princess of Wales.

On Friday November 1 2002 he was acquitted of all the charges of stealing from the estate of Diana, Princess of Wales, the Prince of Wales and Prince William. The trial is estimated to have cost at least £1.5m. Paul sold his story to a national newspaper for a six figure sum before writing his controversial book, A Royal Duty.

He has since become a TV celebrity, first finding fame in the ITV reality show I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!

In January 2008, he was called to give evidence at the inquest of Princess Diana [more from BBC News].
