How many of the male Hughes carried the name Theophilous? Some years ago a Cpl Theo Hughes 1st RWF was killed in a car crash, because of his name I went meet his sister and told her about Troop Sgt Major Edwin Hughes and my research. I then showed her his photograph, there was a gasp of surprise and she shouted "Oh my god, it's our Theo". She had never heard of Edwin. Coincidences or a relation? Anyone know?

My Hughes ancestors were from Hoylake and West Kirby. However, my great great grandfather, Thomas Hughes, was married to Anne Harding from Wrexham. Perhaps he met her there when he visited Hughes relatives in the early 1800s. Wonder if anyone knows of a connection of an Anne Harding, born in Wrexham, daughter of William Harding, a joiner, to Thomas Hughes.

Hello to Tim Hill from Cardiff. You mentioned the name of John Henry Harding. I have Harding ancestors who were from Wrexham, Wales. Ann Harding, daughter of William Harding, was my great great grandmother who married my great great grandfather, Thomas Hughes. They lived in Hoylake in North Wirral area of Cheshire. Do you see any connection between the two Harding lines? Thanks, Bill Hughes.

To John H / Jan Hopkins. Sgt Parkinson's full name was John Smith Parkinson born and he was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire and buried in Bromsgrove. We have quite a bit of information on him and a copy of a letter that he wrote. My mum is researching our family tree and we think we could be related to our family but we need to confirm how! It's a long story and the plot just thickens - lol!

To Mick M of Somerset. You mentioned that you have military details of all three men in the Photo of the "Our Balaclava Heroes". My brother & I are researching the links of my family to a John Howes. An entry in the Census records states that he was "...one of the last to return from the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava after a failed attempt to capture the Russian guns..." We would be very interested in a copy of this photo, if possible, and any further information you may have. John Howes was born in Norfolk but ended his days living in Warwickshire - which would be consistent with being in Birmingham in 1895. Many thanks, Rick

Edwin Hughes is my great-great-great uncle on my mother's side. The only other information I have on him outside of the webpage is that his leg was trapped by the dead horse, and he lost a boot when he managed to free himself. He then pulled a boot off a Russian corpse and crawled back to the British lines."

I don't think I'm a long lost relative, but I was fascinated reading the story of Ned Hughes... and intrigued by the fact that he last lived with an unmarried daughter named Mary in Blackpool. I had an unmarried Aunt Mary in Blackpool too!

Edwin Hughes is my great-great-great grandfather, I am 14. His medals were sold in the early part of last year and went to a Susan Hughes. My Grandfather is Kenneth Hughes. We have lots of newspaper cuttings and photos of him plus photos of the parade when the plaque in Wrexham was unveiled about 12/13 years ago.

Last year I did some research on a photograph of 3 Crimean war veterans. Underneath the photo was written "Our Balaclava Heroes" and names them as Sergt-Maj Howes,Sergt-Maj Parkinson AND Sergt-Maj Hughes!! This photo had been in a museum, unseen for many, many years, the curator being unsure of why the photo was there, and incredibly,he was unaware of its significance. From my further research I believe that this photograph was taken at the time of the Balaclava Commemoration Society annual dinner in Birmingham in 1895 as it was possibly the only time that the three were together. I also have further info on the military service of these three men.The photograph shows them wearing their Cavalry uniforms (still looking good after 41 years!!).If any descendents of "Balaclava Ned" would like a jpeg copy of the pic I will contact BBC North East Wales and leave my contact details.

I am the Great Great Great Grandson of Edwin Hughes. My father is Robert Edwin Hughes of Birmingham (now Walsall). Whose father was Ted Hughes of Birmigham, I believe his father was Theophilus. I think I am the last male directly related decendant to Ned Hughes.

Thanks to Thomas Hughes! I am also researching the family tree and have just discovered that Edwin's eldest son was called Theophilus. He also had a daughter called Blanche who I think died relatively young and another daughter, who according to my father, married a W Edwards. His youngest son, Horace (who was also known as Ernest) was my great grandfather. He had only one child, a son also called Horace who was my grandfather. I have some further information and would like to get in touch with you directly. If you would like to do the same could you let BBC North East Wales have your contact details.

Thanks to Susan Hughes for that information. I have been researching the family tree of the descendents of 'Balaclava Ned' for several years now. Edwin's youngest son was called Horace, his eldest son was Theophilus (who was my grandfather). If you have any more names or information I would be most interested.

Thomas Hughes from Birmingham may be interested to know that my father, Roger Hughes, is also the great-great grandson of Edwin Hughes being directly descended from Edwin's youngest son (whose name I think was Edward).

I am a desendent (Great-Great Grandson) of Edwin Hughes. I have been looking for information about the descendent of the sister of Edwin Hughes (who I believe is called Susan) and haven't found anything. If anyone could help me please comment on this page.
